What can I say? It’s The Moth. The forward alone would be worth the price of the book, but there’s of course so much more depth, detail, and soul within, and each story brings a different perspective. I enjoy the book, years of the podcast, and enjoyed attending a live show once in past years.
Thanks to NetGalley and Crown for an ARC of this book.
This is the first of The Moth series I’ve read, though I’ve been a long time listener of the podcast! I liked some of the stories more than others, but that’s the typical way of story collections for me. I did miss some of the audio cues and comedic timing from the podcast that didn’t always translate over to page, but overall I really enjoyed this!
Like the radio and these stories. Fun to read some of these after hearing them. Recommended.
Thanks very much for the free copy for review!!
The Moth curates such moving and diverse stories that it's hard not to fall in love with them as you listen. I've been a long-time listener of the podcast, but this was my first experience with a written version. I started this book by reading through each story but soon switched to the audio version where it was available. This is one case where I really think the oral telling of the story adds so much value that I would recommend it over the written version.
Medium aside, the stories in this collection are beautiful. I had to break up the experience over many days because I was moved to tears so often. Some of my favorites were:
Standing as 10,000
Loving Grace
Do We Know How to Grieve?
A Bratz Life
Expecting
This is the 5th book in "The Moth" series I've read. I would give this compilation of stories 4 stars as it was not quite as strong as the other books in the series, all of which were 5 star reads for me. However, there were some wonderful standouts. I felt too many of the stories were pretty similar and that's my reasoning behind the lower score.
This is a better version of the Chicken Soup For The Soul books that were so popular back in the 1990s-2000s. However, as an overall collection, I'd recommend the following:
* The Moth (first book in the series)
* How to Tell a Story: The Essential Guide to Memorable Storytelling from The Moth
*The Moth Presents: All These Wonders: True Stories About Facing the Unknown
* The Moth Presents: Occasional Magic: True Stories About Defying the Impossible
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
A Point of Beauty does a great job of capturing everything that makes Moth events so beautiful. In experiencing these stories from strangers' lives, you get to relish in our shared humanity. Thr editors did a lovely job of selecting and organizing stories for this anthology. To my surpise, the written text captures the cadence of spoken stories very well. However, I found myself overwhelmed by the length of this book. Excellent to bond over in a book club and great to expand someone's perception of the world. But not the easiest to immerse and invest in.
The stories in this collection propel me into other worlds and always make me feel something - whether it is joy, sorrow, or just the feeling of being alive - so deeply. Told with precise and vivid language, these stories hit the heart powerfully and for that I am grateful.
A wonderful collection of stories, as all The Moth collections tend to be. My enjoyment varied from story to story but they're all on theme and beautiful.
I love these Moth books and I give them as gifts! I make sure to tell other Moth lovers about them but I also love telling people who have never heard of The Moth about how wonderful it is. This book was such a great read and I savoured every story in it. The books when published are so beautiful from the colour choices to the cover design and the font on the covers. It is like Christmas for me whenever I see these books come out
I love these stories. I am reading one or two a day as part of a New Year's "cleanse" so to speak. They are beautifully written and I look forward to sitting down each evening with a new story.
