An interesting book about growing flowers. Perfect for those in apartments or other small areas just wanting to get started.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I loved this book about how to grow flowers in a small space. I especially loved the detail on each page about each flower—great information for a beginner.
As the proud owner of a small space, I was really excited about this one! It's a very practical, user-friendly guide-- the only thing I wish there was more of were tips on small garden design.
This is such a great book for a beginner gardened who would like to grow plants and starting off with flowers. The information is well laid out and easy to understand. Each chapter teaches a new skill and encourages the effort. There is a chapter that explains the various flowers to grow and how to substitute other varieties into the mix. Great book and I think great for children and adults alike. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DR
Book Review: How to Grow Flowers in Small Spaces by Stephanie Walker
Rating: 4 Stars
I recently delved into Stephanie Walker's "How to Grow Flowers in Small Spaces" and found it to be a delightful and informative read. As someone who enjoys gardening but has limited space, I was intrigued by the promise of learning how to brighten up my small garden with flowers.
The book is beautifully illustrated, making it both visually appealing and educational. Walker provides valuable insights, such as the fascinating fact that begonias can be stored indoors during winter and replanted for spring blooms. The advice on dividing daylilies and using marigolds as natural pest deterrents was particularly insightful.
One aspect that stood out to me was the detailed care instructions for 40 different flowers that can thrive in containers or small spaces. The inclusion of information on establishing garden beds, choosing between seeds or transplants, and proper watering techniques was extremely helpful.
While the book excels in providing a wealth of knowledge for gardeners of all levels, it might not fully cater to those seeking specific guidance on container gardening for small balconies or raised beds. It appears more suited for individuals with small backyards or green spaces.
In conclusion, "How to Grow Flowers in Small Spaces" is a valuable resource for anyone looking to enhance their garden with colorful blooms. Whether you're a novice or an experienced gardener, this book offers a wealth of information to help your floral oasis flourish. I highly recommend this book for its comprehensive guidance and beautiful presentation. Grab your gloves and immerse yourself in the world of small space flower gardening with Stephanie Walker as your expert guide.
⚠️This review was written based on personal opinions and experiences with the book. Individual preferences may vary⚠️
This is a sweet book for beginning gardeners about conventional flower gardening, especially in pots. I expected more about small space gardening, balconies, etc. but the first half of the book is just conventional new gardener advice and the second half is profiles of common flowers with a colorful illustration and details like how to start them and whether they can grow in pots. Native plants are not really discussed and it’s pretty old school, like hand pick or use this poison for slugs instead of pointing out that birds and frogs need them for food and if you have a healthy garden ecosystem they will be easily kept in check and help wildlife.
Do note that there are no photos. I had hoped for small space flower garden inspiration photos but it is not that sort of book. It was ultimately not a useful book for me but your mileage may vary.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
The information in the book is fine. It takes you through the step-by-step process of planting your own little flower garden.
What I don't understand is the reason behind the layout and visual style of the book. First of all: why on earth do you have it set-up as two columns throughout the book? I don't understand the rationale for that. So often the pages felt like huge chunks of text with minimal breathing room and it really didn't invite you to engage with the book.
Secondly, why on earth did you not include illustrations throughout the book but only provide them in chapter 6 and the appendix? I was waiting for some nice illustrations to break up the huge walls of text in the first couple of chapters. The art style of the illustrations is lovely! I would have liked to see more of it in the earlier chapters and saw numerous ways in which it could be incorporated. Just simple illustrations in the margins would also contribute a lot and make the text more engaging.
Nicely laid out book with some great sample garden layout for the yard. The drawings of the plants the author suggests are nice but other than that there's very few illustrations and no photos. From the title I figured this book would mostly be about container gardening. However there were just a few pages about containers all the rest is about gardens in the yard. So if you are looking for a container gardening book for small spaces, this is not that book.
I appreciate how she walked you through selecting the site, prepping your soil and planning your irrigation. She then walks us though all the types of irrigation we could ever think of and how long we should water. The preparing your garden beds goes in depth which is great especially for newbies. Then the caring for your growing flowers, troubleshooting issues, harvesting and arranging is very detailed and some great advice even for old pros.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read the advance reader copy of this book.
Pretty illustrations and a friendly down-to-earth tone, this book would be perfect for first time gardeners, as much of the information provided is a basic how-to to set up a garden. I didn't find much info that I didn't know, though the suggested layouts for garden plots was helpful. I think I was hoping for more about container gardens, as I've recently switched to that format and am always looking for new ideas. The section on specific flowers and their growing tips was great.
Thank you to the publisher for providing a copy of this book to read and review through NetGalley.
Another book I cant wait to be published so I can go buy a physical copy. The index on this little gem is amazing. I have never learned so much in just 144 pages.
Not just impressed by the flower index, but it was also a treat learning all of the benefits that come with flower gardening and how it can improve your physical body and improve your mood.
Learning about soil health and pollinators was an added bonus.
This is a great primer for those who want to grow flowers in their gardens or other spaces. I really liked the author's garden plans and how she gave people ideas for growing within smaller spaces. I definitely saved some of the plans for my own garden.
I will first say that the illustrations in this book are beautiful, and colourful. They are very well done. However, the title of this book is misleading. When a reader sees this book on the shelf, they would expect things like container gardening, or utilizing balconies, small raised beds, etc. In reality, this book dedicates a lot of space to mapping out the sun in a yard, or amending soil. The illustrations of garden plans only feature large, in ground garden beds. While they are beautiful, they are not what someone would expect based on the book title. The pages that speak about plants individually mostly only feature information that would be listed on the back of a seed packet, so seems a little redundant. If I purchase the seeds I need to plant the featured flowers, I would have all the information anyway.
Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, a delightful and informative read that will have you itching to grab your gloves and start planting!

This book has a lot of great information in it about starting a flower garden of any size. The beginning of each chapter was hard me to read, had to reread it several times but as each chapter continues the tone is very knowledgeable and informative.

Written in a delightful tone, this book truly gives you the A-Z for flower growing. It includes a little about everything you need to consider as you plan and start to grow.
In chapter 6, Flowers for a Beautiful Landscape, I really dug in. I got out my personal flower data binder and flushed out details for many of the flowers I grow. Each flower had at least 2 growing tips that I gleaned much information from. And flowers that I grow that I don’t see talked about much were included, like daffodils, day-lilies, and iris.
I really enjoyed learning from this book!
