This is a creepy Halloween story and shows how we probably all know someone who is a little less stable than we think. I love the team and way they interact both teasing and supportive. I love seeing how Jenna and Dave have progressed in their personal lives. This had the right amount of creepy to put me on edge. The stalker getting into the victims’ homes creeped me out and is probably second only to Psycho for that shower scene. And the next time I come home late and have to get from my car to my home, I will definitely be thinking about this one.
The chapters told from the killer’s POV didn’t really shed any insight into who was behind the murders, but I love the information I gleamed from them. Even though I still fell for the red herring. Black Falls, the setting of the book, is serial killer central and this Halloween installment really captured that atmosphere. Did all the team members convey all the info they knew? How do you tell a Halloween trick from something the killer has done?
I read this in a sitting and recommend this series. While this is book 21, they can all be read without completing the series. But once you read one, you will want to read more.
Once again, D.K. Hood knocks it out of the park with a gripping mystery. Reading this series is like dropping in on friends. I long ago became invested in these characters. I had to read it in one sitting. Another jaw dropper! The way this author is able to compliment her individual series with crossover characters while maintaining them each as separate is masterfully done. I loved the ending.
Halloween is extra creepy in Black Rock Falls this year when a woman disappears and older graves of three other women are discovered. It's all hands on deck, including help from Ty and Jo, when another woman disappears.
I love this cast of characters and how they really are like a family. Having Jenna and Dave become parents to Tauri adds a new dimension to their characters and difficulty to their jobs.
I am looking forward to book 22.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC
This is the twenty-first case for this Detective duo and their team,
With a historical serial killer apparently back - or so it would seem.
A new victim's disappearance triggers the search now
Can they prevent more deaths somehow?
Another enthralling, gripping case unfolds as you read,
Giving clues, keeping you hoping the duo will succeed.
There's friendships, family, new memories to make, too,
As the team endeavour to uncover every clue.
Hallowe'en, mischief, masks and more
All contribute as the case they explore.
What is the motive? What will they discover?
Can they find the killer before he kills another?
This is another truly gripping read
I really hope it is one that you also need!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.
This is book number 21 in the Kane & Alton series. I have a lot of catching up to do as I am new to this story but cannot wait to go back and read the rest of these books after this one! Highly recommend😊
A killer is stalking victims, looking to impose terror on them before he murders them.
Black Rock Falls is just a small town and Sheriff Jenna Alton works along with her deputy, David Kane. When a local girl turns up missing, the team is on the case. What they find concerns them deeply. There seems to have been a struggle, but no body has been found. Is she dead or alive?
More concerning is the parallel this has to a case from several years ago. Added to the mystery is the fact that bodies were found buried in the nearby forest; the previous victims may have been found. Is the same perpetrator at it again?
Can the team solve the case before any more victims are targeted or is it already too late?
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Review for 'A Song For The Dead' by DK Hood.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 8th January 2024
This is the tenth book I have read by this author. It is also the twenty first book in the 'Detective Kane and Alton' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book 12 in the series), 'Fallen Angel' (book 13 in the series), 'Don't Look Back (book 13.5 in the series), ' Pray For Mercy '(book 14 in the series), 'Kiss Her Goodnight' (book 15 in the series) 'Her Bleeding Heart' (book 16 in the series), 'Chase Her Shadow' (book 17 in the series), 'Their Wicked Games' (book 19 in the series) and 'Where Hidden Souls Lie' (book 20 in the series) and I would highly recommend each and every one of them!!!
This novel consists of a prologue, 50 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SERIES!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!!
This book is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! Even with twenty one amazing books in this action packed series she is still coming up with unique and action packed storylines that absolutely grip the reader immediately from page one to the very end!!! Hood's fantastic and evocative writing skills ensured the descriptions were so vivid, evocative and realistic I felt myself feeling the fear running through me and the hairs on my arms raise. This has got to be one of the best storylines I have ever read!!!! Just when you've read the best book in this series and you think it can't get any better BANG DK Hood does it again!! I absolutely LOVED the storyline, LOVE this series and LOVE this amazing author!!!. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime, twists and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all this book was!!! I absolutely love the fact that it is based on Halloween with the added rituals added in. It just makes everything even creepier when there's skeletons playing poker, spiders having babies all over Aunt Betty's cafe and with a killer running around hidden among the rest of the monsters running around. The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, Halloween, murder, rituals, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! I love the fact that after reading the amazing Detective Beth Katz' series I loved the links between the two series and love that now I have 2 amazing Series' by this epic author to look forward to reading when new books come out in either!! I genuinely thought for once I had actually worked out who it was in this amazing series but YET AGAIN DK Hood proves me wrong!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is one of the best series I have ever read!!
Although this is the twenty first book in the series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without any of the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I absolutely LOVED meeting these amazing characters again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. They have become like friends/family to me as I feel like I have got to know them so well and every time I meet them again I am landed and every time I have to say Goodbye I am gutted I have to wait to greet them again. They really are one of the best teams I have ever met and I certainly would not like to get on the wrong side of them!!!!nI love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I have enjoyed watching her relationship with Kane has evolved and I am looking forward to going back to how they met and moving forward to see where it goes especially in regards to what happens next!!. Kane is another fantastic character that I became invested in and I adore how protective of the team, and especially Jenna, he is. Kane is someone I would move to the other side of the world of I did something to upset him!!! Kane and Jenna would do anything and everything to protect each other and THAT ladies and gents is true love and I feel honoured to have watched it develop so much!!! I also love the fact that they now have the addition of adopted son Tauri in their lives and adore seeing them as parents and how their life's are differing from before with them making sure Tauri has trusted people around him and getting home to him as often as they can. I also think it's sweet how Tauri calls them heros, especially in his kindergarden and how he is so understanding even though he is so young. The team dynamics work perfectly and I also enjoyed getting to know more about Rio, Jo, Carter , Wolfe and Rowley and I look forward to meeting them all again. Rio and Rowley did annoy me with their attitude towards a certain situation but they are forgiven as I think they are amazing and we all make stupid mistakes. There are other characters that I loved in this book and loved meeting again but I am going to leave that to you too see when you read your copy. I must say my favourites have to be Duke and Zorro though!!!! What an absolutely fantastic characters they are. I just love it when animals play such large parts in books. Regardless of whether you love or hate any of the characters they all work perfectly to make this storyline an absolutely addictive, explosive page turner!!! The majority of the characters have become like friends to me and I'm always sad to say goodbye never knowing when I'll "see" them again so I really hope the next book is being written as I speak. Hint hint 😉 DK Hood!!!
Congratulations D.K Hood on yet ANOTHER HUMONGOUS success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and this is exactly why you are one my favourite crime authors!!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂
This book is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!! This series is also in my top 3 ♥
Do not start this until you have cleared yours schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable Halloween crime thriller that will keep you up all night.

Halloween is always extra creepy in Black Rock Falls and this year is no different. A bloody crime scene with no body adds to the terror and Kane and Alton wonder if another serial killer has arrived to add his name to the list in serial killer central.
This was another creepy addition to the Kane and Alton Series! My chest was pounding with anticipation and fear as I was waiting for this killer to be caught! Great book!

This is Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane first Halloween with their son, Tauri,
Jenna isn't a fan of this season as some nasty things are happening in Black Rock Falls this Halloween. It appear a murder spree is happening - graves have been found which makes , them think it is the work of the Halloween Slasher who has not been seen or heard of in seven years.
The town has been decorated for Halloween, so there are a lot more things a killer can hide behind. Jenna feels like someone is watching her from the shadows, but is it just her overactive imagination?
This #21 in this series; I have read other D.K. Hood books and really enjoyed them and realized I read the Special Agent Beth Katz series and not this series. I am a D.K.Hood fan and was pleased that I really wasn’t all that lost by jumping in this late in this series.
Yep I am now looking forward to 'Kane and Alton Book #22'
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for January 8, 2024
A Song For The Dead is book 21 in the Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. The Detective Kane and Alton series is one of my very favorite series. I don't know how D.K. Hood does it, but the stories get better and better! A Song For The Dead is extra creepy because it's based on a serial killer who strikes every Halloween. Halloween is already creepy enough with all of the people in disguises, wearing masks, scary decorations, and people trying their best to scare each other!! When you add a serial killer to that this book will stick with you for quite awhile!
The serial killer follows the women he wants to kill and learns their routines. He goes into their house when they're gone and makes a plan of attack. He also often cleans, organizes their closets, makes a fire, makes coffee, etc. The victim's often think their roommate did something nice or they think they're imagining things. The day of the murder, the killer waits in the shadows until the victim gets into the shower. Once the water is running he gets ready to strike and writes a message in the steamed up mirror. When the woman steps out of the shower and is drying off, he waits until she sees the message in the mirror, and then he strikes! He slashes their throats and kills them quickly.
When a report of a missing woman comes in to the station, Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane, head to the scene. It's a house in a remote area and there's no sign of a body, but lots of blood and the smell of death! Freya Richardson is gone but there's no way she could be alive with all of the blood in the bathroom. A hiker comes across 3 graves in the woods and the women have been killed by a slash across their neck. They were killed about 7 years ago and each was buried with a phone that wasn't theirs. The killer recorded the entire murder on the phone that they're buried with. Who is doing this and why? Is the Halloween slasher back 7 years later? The cold case was never solved as the killings stopped. Was the person in prison? Were they sick? Why wait 7 years to kill again? Are the cases related?
The killer always killed 3 women every Halloween. He buried them into the shape of a triangle side by side. Why was this significant to the killer? Why were these 3 women chosen? If the same killer is back, there will be 2 more women that disappear in similar fashion to Freya. He always kills 3 before Halloween. Kane and Alton have their work cut out for them tracking this serial killer as no one ever sees anyone out of the ordinary at the scenes. Why does the killer clean first? Why don't the women notice they're being followed when he tracks them to learn their routine? The killer is getting overconfident that he'll never be caught. Will he make a mistake? Will Kane and Alton be able to catch him before he kills a friend of theirs? A Song For The Dead will have you reading at breakneck speed to find out what happens! I absolutely loved the creepy setting of Halloween for this book and will think twice when getting out of the shower from now on! If there's a message on my mirror you'll hear me scream no matter where you live!
I rate A Song For The Dead 5 stars with my very highest recommendation! The only warning I'll give is make sure you have time to read when you start the book because you won't be able to stop! I can't wait for the next book in the series and I'm so glad Kane and Alton are now parents to Tauri! The new dynamic only adds to the series. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of A Song For The Dead in exchange for a fair review. #ASongForTheDead
4.5⭐
It's approaching Halloween in Black Rock Falls and for a town known as serial killer central it's not exactly a safe place to be. Especially as Halloween seems to be the holiday where most of its serial killers appear.
Just ask Detectives Kane and Alton who've investigated some of their most bizarre and terrifying cases over this period. But they're hoping for a change of pace this year particularly as they now have a son to celebrate with.
However, there is no such luck. As thanks to graves discovered in the forest and a missing woman: Freya Richardson. Sheriff Alton and the team have their hands full and when the bodies are uncovered from the graves and disturbing evidence revealed. The team realise they have a killer known as the Halloween slasher in Black Rock Falls. And worse still the killer is very much active and looking for more victims, killing three women every Halloween before moving on and returning the following year.
But with very little evidence to go on and no recent bodies. This is a killer who knows what they are doing and one who has been getting away with murder for years.
Yet, Jenna is determined to stop them especially when they target a friend.
But will the team be able to save them in time or will a deputy's judgement allow the killer to escape once again?
And with big twists, a terrifying killer and a storyline that kept me guessing right to the end. This was another cracking addition to the series and at book twenty-one it's clear this series is only getting better. Even with the recent changes the suspense and thrills are still there and I would happily recommend this series to all. I also think it's one you could easily pick up at any point although you'll definitely want to go back and read any stories you've missed out on!
D.K. Hood is the queen of depravity and disquiet!! I had to look up synonyms for sinister because this series sends chills down my spine.
I love the fact that my heart pounded and I jumped at every little noise while devouring the latest thriller by Hood.
A perverted sicko is using Halloween to murder young women fresh from their showers.
The spookiness oozes out of every chapter and I loved every minute of it.
Kane still makes me swoon with his steely eyed accuracy and the whole gang worked together to solve the heinous crimes.
This small Montana town continues to be murder capital of the west.
Book 21 in this brilliant series. How the author keeps up the tension, the drama and the breakneck speed of the plot I don't know. But she certainly does! My heart was going nineteen to the dozen reading this. Absolutely loved it. So much so I read it in one day. Superb.
It’s Halloween when a young woman is reported missing from the small town of Black Rock Falls and Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner, Deputy David Kane, race to her remote home. But all they find are signs of a struggle and blood on the bathroom floor. Freya Richardson has vanished.
With no leads on Freya’s whereabouts, Jenna hits a wall in the investigation. Then the bodies of three women are discovered buried in a local forest. Each one has been wrapped in a blanket. As Jenna takes in their pretty faces and long blond hair, her blood runs cold. Freya isn’t here: but each body looks shockingly like her.
Can they find the killer before he takes any more victims?
A serial killer on the loose, it's almost Halloween and there is constant mist rolling in. Things are going bump in the night and I'm reading during a thunderstorm, a loud bang vibrated my windows and I nearly fell off my chair as the knife came down.
What a great setting to aid in the scariness of this story.
Sheriff Alton and her team are slowly putting the pieces together and lining up the suspects. Is it one of them or just a bunch of red herrings.
Women are going missing in threes, no bodies just an obvious murder scene. Bodies from seven years have been uncovered. Are they connected?
We have a glimpse into the private lives of these amazing characters, but nothing distracts from the case at hand.
I was riveted and couldn't put my kindle down. Thanks to NetGalley for an early read. I highly recommend this series and can't wait for the next one.
Detectives Kane and Alton seem to have a serial killer once again in their town of Black Rock Falls. And, it’s Halloween which means the town is full of menacing and scary decorations. Wherever you look, you see creepiness. Throw in the misty fog that seems to abound in the town and you just shiver reading the descriptions the author shares. I am not sure I would want to live in Black Rock Falls.
I love all the main characters and how they all work so well together. The sense of family is strong throughout the series.
There is so much going on within the story that I had to sit back a few times to think about what was going on. So many twists and turns.
I do encourage you to start with the first book in the series. There is so much backstory with all the characters that is important to know.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of A Song for the Dead, the twenty first novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane set in the fictional town of Black Rock Falls, Montana.
Freya Richardson has gone missing from her blood soaked home. Jenna has little doubt that she is dead, but there are no clues as to what happened to her. In the middle of this stalled investigation three bodies are found buried in the woods with links to an uncaptured serial killer and more frighteningly to Freya and two more potential victims as he always kills in threes.
I enjoyed A Song for the Dead, which is another serial killer case in a town renowned for them. I wouldn’t call it one of the best novels in the series as it feels a little perfunctory. As ever, there are quite a few suspects, who need investigation and a focus on the potential victims, who are being quietly terrorised. The unnamed killer gets his say on a regular basis, but I didn’t feel it was meaningful despite hints at a convoluted motive.
The novel is set at Hallowe’en time, which always brings out the crazies but also supplies a suitably creepy atmosphere with macabre decorations and a swirling mist where Jenna or anyone else cannot be sure of what they see. I think that this is the best part of the novel, the creeping sense of unease and that all is not as it seems.
The plot is a bit hit and miss. They investigate their suspects to no real purpose and make some horrible links to the buried bodies, but there is no real forward momentum until they catch the killer in the act. Jenna’s deputies, Zac and Rowley, make a stupid mistake, which seems like an obvious plot contrivance as it is so out of character and will be seen as such by the majority of series readers.
A Song for the Dead is an atmospheric read that I can recommend.
You know nothing good can come when it is Halloween in Serial Killer Central. This book starts out immediately with the creep factor. Freya feels like someone is following her home, but she feels safe once she is home behind a locked door. She is not safe. She gets out of the shower to find a message written in the condensation on the mirror - I'm going to kill you. No showers for me while I am home alone. This one really creeped me out, even more than usual. It was about a serial killer, of course, but the killer was sadistic, ritualistic and a stalker to boot. I would highly suggest reading this one in the daytime. Even the town's decorations are creepy.
I love this crew in Black Rock Falls. They tend to attract serial killers to Serial Killer Central. However, in my opinion these psychopaths have picked the wrong place to haunt since the dream team in law enforcement will be on the job in no time flat. As is always the case in this series, the pace is perfect - not too slow and not too fast. The mystery is good. You are given several suspects, but it is never completely obvious who the culprit may be. I am enjoying the new family dynamics with Jenna Alton and David Kane as they have added their son, Tauri, to their family, which provides a little break from the macabre that we encounter in this series. This is another one in the winner column for the Kane and Alton series.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Oh my! Who would've thought that the author would be at book 21 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and that they're not past their sell by date. Having been with them since the very first book I firmly believe that they aren't standalones, because of the wealth of background information about all of the characters they are definitely better read by starting with the very first book, Don't Tell A Soul (I've probably said this before).
As soon as I get my sticky little mitts on a new D, K, Hood book, my wee ass starts making buttons to travel to Black Rock Falls but I make myself finish my current read first and obviously it was no different with A Song for the Dead. I'm not a big advocate of the right to bear arms but I think if I lived in Black Rock Falls I wouldn't leave home without a gun especially around Halloween lol.
I found myself not wanting to go into Aunt Bettys cafe with the huge spider that had moveable parts and bright eyes. It actually became the focus of my nightmares for a few nights being a massive arachnophobe with a vivid imagination. Other than that I like the idea of the stores going to town trying to make it more of a community rather than serial killer central.
The killer in this book really was a very frightening man, the way he used his obsessive compulsions to torment his victims ahead of killing them absolutely scared the bejesus out of me. He had his own warped reasons for why he murdered the girls. I couldn't believe just how calculated he was when it came to preparing the graves in advance, to picking the victims the way he watched the girls to learn their routine, When it came to his kills he had an plan and he stuck to it, the way he murdered these young girls was just so brutal that they never stood a chance.
Reading about Dave and Jenna's lives as parents has added a whole new dimension to them which I really liked. I loved to see how protective of Tauri that Jenna was when showing him the Halloween decorations. What did I realise was that due to some of the cases that the team have dealt with over the year the little man will be one of the most protected children in town. Although I think that having Tauri leaves them vulnerable to issues in the future but heaven help anyone that thinks doing anything to the little man is a good idea, as the whole team will descend on them like a ton of bricks and then some.
Thanks to the author D. K. Hood, Netgalley and Bookouture for an ARC. All opinions and reviews are mine and mine alone,
It’s Halloween when a young woman is reported missing from the small town of Black Rock Falls and Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner, Deputy David Kane , race to her remote home. Freya isn’t but each body looks shockingly like her. Jenna soon links the victims with an unsolved case where the killer attacked blonde-haired women in their homes and buried the bodies. Working around the clock, Jenna’s heart sinks when a beloved friend makes a terrifying call telling her there’s an intruder in her house. Begging her to hide, Jenna and Dave race to the woman’s house. But can they get there in time to stop another innocent life from being taken?
The twenty first book in the series & it’s a testament to how good they are that I’m still eagerly awaiting the next. The books can be read on their own but I love the dynamics that have developed between the characters throughout the series. This wasn’t my favourite of the series but it was still a very good murder mystery, which I devoured in two sittings & I’m glad I read it during the day as it was scary especially as the story is set at the end of October & Halloween. A well written, engrossing murder mystery, the characters have depth & the pace is good. Roll on book twenty two
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Another brilliant crime thriller in the Kane and Alton series.
Jenna hates Halloween and this year seems to have a reason to do so as someone is killing women in Blackwater Falls.
Two women have been killed and with the discovery of some graves, it seems the killer has been active in the past and left a triangle of graves.
Kane and Alton race against the clock to stop the third woman being killed but with little to go on, they’re worried they’ll be too late.
With a nail biting ending, this is a brilliant addition to the series.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
What could be more perfect than the next serial killer case taking place around Halloween? Reading this story is enough to make a person reconsider taking any more showers. And then there is the misty fog that the town is known for and that gets worse in October, along with all the decorations the businesses along Main Street have put up. Taking all of this into account, it is easy to see how a person would get easily spooked and feel that something is amiss.
First there was the discovery of unmarked graves in the mountains. Then a woman is missing and there's blood on her bathroom floor. When there is a clue that links the graves to the current missing woman, it is all hands on deck to solve the case. There are plenty of suspects and it is a race against time to determine who the killer is before there is another victim. I was on the edge of my seat as I devoured this latest story.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
