Her Last Cry is book three in the Delaney Pace series by Pamela Fagan. Delaney is a Detective in Kearny County, Wyoming and works closely with her friend and now Interim Sheriff Leo Palmer. When they're asked to do a welfare check at a remot cabin, local environmental lawyer Annabeth Dillon is deceased. Is it a sex game gone wrong? Who was Annabeth with at the cabin? And who killed her? Shortly after, a collegue of Annabeth's also turns up dead and Detective Delaney Pace realizes she knows the person that was in the cabin (based on DNA results taken from the scene).
I won't say much more than that, but I really have been enjoying this series and was glad to pick up on the fact that this installment may not be the last. I love the setting and the characters, and the mysteries are always intriguing and never boring or repetitive. The twists will keep you entertained and the misdirection from the author will keep you guessing.
If you enjoy clean, twisty mysteries with great lead characters (and maybe a little family drama and a twinge of romance) then you'll enjoy this book and the entire Delaney Pace series.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Detective Delaney Pace book 3
Oh I loved this one. Fast paced. Full of drama. And plenty of twists to keep the pages turning. This is a great series and I cannot wait to read the next one.
Her Last Cry by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a gripping, fast-paced thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. In the third installment of the Detective Delaney Pace series, Hutchins crafts a chilling murder mystery set in the snow-covered town of Kearney, Wyoming, where Detective Delaney Pace is tasked with solving the disappearance of Annabeth Dillon, a local activist with plenty of enemies.
The case takes a dark turn when Annabeth’s body is found in a remote cabin, and Delaney’s pursuit of a mysterious figure at the scene hints at the presence of a dangerous killer. As the investigation unfolds, Delaney discovers that Annabeth’s murder may be linked to another death, and both victims seem to have been hiding secrets that someone is willing to kill for. The tension builds as Delaney connects the dots, only to be shocked when she learns that the killer's DNA matches someone she knows personally.
Hutchins does a fantastic job of creating an atmospheric, suspenseful plot, filled with twists, red herrings, and high stakes. Delaney’s determination and grit are evident as she dives deeper into the case, but personal stakes are also at play as those close to her become targets. The novel is not only a nail-biting mystery but also explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the price of uncovering hidden truths.
The character development in Her Last Cry is strong, with Delaney continuing to grow as a protagonist while balancing her professional duties with personal challenges. The added emotional weight of the investigation—combined with the chilling realization of how close the killer is to her—adds an extra layer of urgency to the narrative.
For fans of suspenseful crime thrillers with a strong, capable female detective at the helm, Her Last Cry is a must-read. Hutchins delivers a tense, intricately woven mystery with unexpected twists and a relentless pace, making it an engaging and satisfying installment in the Detective Delaney Pace series.
I finish the second book and started this one inmediately.
This book got a little bit political for my taste, but the mystery still was the main focus of the plot so it wasn't a problem.
I thought the romance between Leo and Delaney somehow would be resolved in this book but it got complicated, which I like. Why? Because between the revelation in the last chapter and this unfinished business, we will probably have another book.
The writting style is amazing!
I hope to read more from you (soon).
Reading the story for me it spelled out all of the details of what happens behind closed doors when tracking down the subject to a crime. The writer certainly did a wonderful job with the character creative writing between Leo and Delaney, however there were some moments Delaney was getting on my nerves. Be a grown up and tell Leo how you feel. The kids act more adult sometimes. The story is entertaining for people who love the behind the scenes of tracking down their perp.
I think this is one of the most fast-paced and explosive series I have ever read! Delaney Pace is a "take-no-prisoners" kind of girl and if I had a family member go missing or, heaven forbid, get killed, she is the one I would call!
The fact that the murders that Delaney is trying to solve are happening in the dead of winter, add an extra layer of complexity to the cases. I really like the character of Leo and I am looking forward to what happens with both of them, in the next book.
I don't know how to review this properly without giving too much away, so I will stop here and just implore everyone to buy the series. Start at the beginning though, that is very important!
4.5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
DNF Sorry I didn't realize what this book was about. NEI was given in the blurb. It's not my cup of teas so I was unable to read the book. But thanks, its more for someone who enjoys horror books
Yes!!!!! This is a series that just keeps on getting better........
Her Last Cry by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is the third book in the excellent Detective Delaney Pace series and what an excellent series this has been. I have been gripped from the very first book and it has been a roller coaster ride with so many twists and turns that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and I ended up reading this book to the early hours of the morning, just like her second book in this series.
Then......NOOOOOO! It finished with a cliff hanger! This is so good and I can't wait for Book four of this series!
I highly recommend these books Excellent series!!!
Big Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for my ARC. I have loved this series especially the way Pamela the author writes.
This the third book in the Detective Delaney Pace series and it is just as good as the first two. I was able to jump right into this third book and we picked up where the last two left off. I have really become a fan of these characters and the stories the Hutchins weaves. I really hope this series will continue on for more books and that it won’t end here.
I recommend anyone who enjoys police procedurals to give this series a try.
This is book number 3 in the series. There were so many twists in this book. The ending left me wanting to know more so hopefully there will be a book number 4.
The only problem with finding a new series you love, is when you finish them, with no reassurance that another is on its way! This one was just as exciting and shocking as the previous 2, with this one having a political spin to it!
Each one has been hard to put down, and the small town snowy back drop makes the series stand out from other similar genre.
If you love strong women, hot sheriffs and sassy kids, look no further than this belter of a series!! PLEASE put me out of my misery and pop out book number 4!
Book #3 and the action just keeps going. Love how the stories from these books flow into the next. Book 3 ends on a bit of a cliffhanger- I need book 4 stat!!
It is a fantastic story, exhilarating plot, well developed characters, and a well executed shocking ending. I read in one day, unputdownable and very addictive. Recommend to every thriller reader.
Third book in the series. I went through this series so fast!! All three books kept me on edge. You feel such a rush.
Waiting eagerly for the next one.
Thanks to Bookouture, Pamela Fagan Hutchins, and NetGalley for the ARC; this is my unbiased review.
Her Last Cry (Detective Delaney Pace 3) by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. Bookouture, 16th January 2024
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Synopsis:
Detective Delaney Pace finds Annabeth Dillon’s lifeless body on the bed, dark red ties gripping her tight, long black hair covering her face. She spots a dark figure at the window and rushes to give chase, but he gets away. Could it have been the killer?
As a local activist, Annabeth had a lot of enemies, and was no stranger to death threats. When one of Annabeth’s colleagues is found dead in her own home, Delaney fears that the murders are linked. Were the women hiding a secret that someone killed to keep?
Days later, Delaney discovers that the murderer left DNA evidence on the body, and she’s shocked to her core when she learns she knows the killer. As she jumps to action, another call comes in—someone close to her has gone missing. Delaney knows just how dangerous the killer is, but she’s prepared to risk everything, even her own life, to save the life of another innocent victim. Will she find them in time?
Review:
I've truly adored getting to know Delaney Pace over the first three books that Pamela Fagan Hutchins has based around her, and I'm a little sad that I don't have another Delaney on my TBR, but apparently book four will be happening, so that's made me very happy!
In the meantime, what to say about Her Last Cry? Delaney is as hot-blooded as ever, and she's fast become one of my favourite detectives. She remains unconventional and defiant with authority, and as she hunts Annabeth's killer, she tracks down clues like a regular bloodhound.
The tension in Delaney's personal and work life positively sizzles, in both delightful and frustrating ways. Her family come under fire, and her relationship with the wonderfully written Leo Palmer is exhausting! It's hard to say more with no spoilers, especially if you've not read books 1 and 2, but this series is stunning!

Her Last Cry by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. Detective Delaney Pace is becoming my favorite main character; the pain of her past shaped her, but she still strong, honest and loving. Plus she’s a great driver and a great shot. Her map skills are off the chart. I can’t wait for book number four.
Always a safe bet for a good, weekend, curled-up-on-the-sofa kid of read.
Solid plot, excellent characters (possibly a few too many this time though) and a great ending.
Will definitely look out for the next book in the series.

Mystery
In the third installment of this series. Detective Pace is putting the heat on some people who do not like it. It starts with the scandalous death of a senatorial candidate. Entering onto the scene are some mysterious people and Delaney must ask herself just who she can trust.
This book hooked me from the beginning. I read it in less than 24 hours I was so wrapped up in it. It had me guessing until the very end and left me wanting more from this author. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
I enjoy the Delaney Pace series, but this one felt a little slow to me. The storyline is good and I desperately want to know what is going to happen next, but I sort of feel like it’s taking me weeks to get there. I hear that there are 3 more books coming in this series and I’m looking forward to reading those! Hopefully, they’ll move a little quicker!
