This book took a while to really get going, and I found the first half quite tedious. It wasn’t until I was about 65% in that the plot began to reveal any meaningful clues, which made it a bit of a drag to read. The story felt scattered, and it became fairly obvious early on that the husband wasn’t the culprit, which took away some of the suspense.
But, the ending was interesting and did redeem the book somewhat. It’s just a shame that the middle could have been tighter and more engaging.
Things I found weird:
1. How can Hannah just move on with Taylor (Shane) and Sarah? Super weird.
2. The way we got the whole picture of what happened. I think it could have been done better.
3. Max 🙃
This book was sooooo good!!! I didn’t know what to expect, had some great twists and turns, even suggested it as a read for my book club!!!
The Girl in Room 12 by Kathryn Croft was a great psychological thriller that I really enjoyed. Full of twists and turns. It was a slow burner but that helped me to understand who was who. Kept me guessing until the very end. A fab book.
Thank you Bookoutre for an absolutely wow book.
Thank you also Netgalley.
This was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
My new word "unputdownable" - this is what this book was.
You have to read this.
More from Kathryn please.
Thank you Netgalley, Kathryn Croft and Bookouture for the eArc of The Girl Next Door.
This is a great domestic psychological thriller by Kathryn Croft. Ive read a few of her books over the last couple of years and really like her writing style and plot twists. I always find that the balance between character building and the direction of the plot is done well with the book starting off slowly, building in the characters. Then gathering speed as the plot starts to twist and turn which makes of r a nice medium paced thriller.
The characters are likeable with Hannah as the MC who suspects her Husband may have been involved in a murder of Alice after she finds a Keycard of a hotel room in her Husbands belongings, Throughout the book, you think you have things figured out, only to find there is another plausible twist to the narrative. What you get is a gripping page turner with a satisfying pay off at the end.
4 stars
Just WOW I could not put this book down!!! It had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through! I read this story in one sitting it was that good!
This book took me ages to get into. I was well past 35% before it hooked me. I kept putting it down , reading other books and then coming back.
Something was there. It must have been - or I'd have DNF'd it months ago.
So last week, I picked it up again and didn't put it down.
There are so many secrets and lies in this book.
Hannah and Max are happily married with a small child called Poppy. Max has a good job working for a tech company and Hannah owns and runs an independent bookshop.
The talk of the town at the moment is that a girl has been found murdered in one of the local hotels.
How awful! But neither Hannah nor Max knew Alice, the dead woman, so although it's happened so close to home, Hannah doesn't really take much notice.
Until she finds a hotel key card in the pocket of one of Max's suits.
What the hell? Hannah admits that Max has been a little stressed recently but she had put that down to the fact that he is always working.
Hannah says nothing to Max and decides to do a little undercover work herself to find out if Max was the last person to see Alice alive?
There is a host of characters in this book who are all untrustworthy in different ways. Who can Hannah trust?
I ended up really enjoying this book. The adventure of Hannah's seemingly perfect life unravelling as she discovers secret and lies each and every time that you think you have it all sussed out in your head was brilliant and left my head reeling. . . in the best possible way.
This was an entertaining but frustrating read at the same time. I thought I had everything figured out.
A Must Read Book! An absolute belter of a book, which kept me reading on and on.
A reminder that you never know who you can trust and life can be turned upside down in an instant.
I did have an inkling who the culprit was about three quarters of the way through but not enough to not keep me guessing. Amazing!
A very good thriller. This was quite twisty a d kept you guessing until the end. I raced through this one. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Lies, betrayal, and countless secrets play a major role in the lives of Hannah and Max. Could Max be a murderer? Hannah is determined to uncover the connection between her husband, Max, and a dead woman, Alice. Who was this a mysterious woman and did she know Max? “ When someone dies, it's like you don't want to see any bad in them. And none of us are saints, are we?” I was completely immersed in Hannah’s struggle to unlock the mystery of the girl in room 12. As soon as I thought I knew where the story was going, an unexpected twist would occur leading the plot in a surprising direction. This thriller is unpredictable, original, and extremely addictive. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.
Hannah and Max, a married couple with a daughter named Poppy, seem to have it all however all's not well and cracks begin to show as Max's late nights and unpredictable moods increasingly frustrate Hannah. When a local woman is murdered in a hotel, Hannah's suspicions skyrocket upon discovering a key card to the scene in Max's possession. Could Max be having an affair, or worse, be involved in the murder of Alice, whose body was just discovered by the police?
While The Girl in Room 12 is a tense thriller with well developed characters that kept me engaged, I did find certain parts dragged on a bit. Nevertheless, I persisted, and I'm glad I did. This gripping read kept me guessing until the very end, earning it 4 stars from me.
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review
I really enjoyed the unpredictability of this one. I was questioning characters, and their motives. I honestly couldnt put it down. Filled with secrets and lies, and of course twists and turns.
This was a really good read, I enjoyed this so much I couldn’t put it down. There was plenty of twists and turns throughout with an unexpected ending that you don’t see coming. The characters were great, the story itself was very suspenseful and the style of writing was perfect.

Well I’ve got to say that I saw this entire book coming and I could have told you what was going to happen and I would have been totally WRONG! I was shocked and so glad that I didn’t see all these twists. So good.

Hannah is convinced her husband is hiding something, but is he actually capable of murder. A girl has been found dead at a hotel near their home, and Hamnah finds a key card for the hotel in her Husbands pocket.
Is Max guilty of murder. Hannah needs to find out the truth for the sake of their daughter Poppy.
Well, that was a rollercoaster of twists and turns! This was an entertaining and fast paced Thriller and I was completely gripped from about 40% and couldn't put it down. Will definitely be reading more from Kathryn Croft.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Kathryn Croft for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
This book was OK but in a genre that sets the bar high, this book for me fell a little short of the mark. It just got a tad far fetched which ultimately lost my interest in the story
