An illegal ending! After making me cry too! This chapter closes but another one opens and I need the next book in Patch, Wren and Barver’s life.
This book has much more emotion than the last two. It starts right after the last book ends but interestingly takes a different approach in the first half. As the friends are divided, each chapter takes turns focusing on each character. I liked this approach because the stories were all happening at the same time, yet separate enough to indulge in each one’s intensity, plot, and progress. At the end, they were masterfully intertwined and finally joined to announce the start of the climax.
There is quite a lot of character growth in this story. Wren had a formidable growth throughout this series. She was already an intelligent, confident and fearless character but in this book, she was also a great sorcerer in training. Her perseverance was commendable and encouraging to watch. Barver has always been a wise and kind dracogriff. He’s almost like a parental figure watching over Wren and Patch, always coming to their rescue when things are tough. I liked seeing a more emotional side to Barver in this book because he felt more confident and free.
Patch has always been a character I struggled to understand but loved. He’s basically similar to a side character who’s always there but barely contributing. Unlike Wren and Barber, Patch barely contributed throughout the story until the last third of the book. He was always there for his friends and cared about them but I felt like there was something missing. I felt sad for him and could feel his loneliness through the words. I wish I could give Patch a hug. I feel like the story didn’t give Patch enough chances to play his beloved pipe or talk about his guilt from the Erner mishap or even come to terms with the rushed revelation at the ending.
The ending in this story is a bit rushed, a little anticlimactic and full of surprises. I enjoyed the story’s pacing because it built up the events and intense moments expertly and the sudden surprises were enjoyable. They were unforeseen and added new complexities. However, the ending, although surprising, fell flat and the multiple revelations at the end happened too quickly and too suddenly. The plot that was carried from book one has ended but it leaves room for a new story which intrigues me.
Overall this was an enjoyable read. One that made me attached to the characters enough that I cried when things were rough and looking bleak. My favorite character in this story will always be Patch because he’s very humble and kind. He touches a heart string because I see myself reflected so much in his character. That aside, this is the end of the series and I’m hoping the story with these friends continues soon with more exciting magical adventures.
What an adventure we’ve been taken on throughout the whole series but especially this conclusion to the series! It was non stop adventure and action right from the beginning and filled with all of the magic and wonder that filled the first two books of the series.
There were many twists and turns which kept me on my toes. It’s hard to write about the book without spoiling it too. I enjoyed the shifting perspective so we got to see what each group was up against. My favourite will always be Wren, the headstrong shapeshifter. I just wish we would get more stories about this world so I could see what happens next for her.
Definitely a series I will remember for a long time as it had such a unique magic system and incredible world building. I read in the back that the author had been hatching this tale for a long time and you can tell. It has so much heart in the characters and details in the world. There’s more to tell I’m sure as well and hopefully someday we will get to read that.
I received an electronic advanced reader copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review. I happily enjoyed this tale and can’t wait til the next from the author.
A strong ending for the “Songs of Magic” trilogy! While I had not read previous installments, the summary at the beginning helped me dive right into the world and has me eager to start at the beginning. I would highly recommend to any Middle-Grade fantasy lover.
It's high praise for a middle grade fantasy series that I couldn't wait to get my hands on this last in the trilogy. Thanks for the publisher and NetGalley for giving me that opportunity.
This is a very fitting end to the "Songs of Magic" trilogy. A good summary in the beginning will help readers who haven't been following Patch's adventures, but I'd still recommend they start with the first volume, "A Darkening of Dragons". The world building is fascinating and the characters are enduring; the adventure is non-stop. While the ending nicely ties up loose ends, thankfully there are hints that we might just be able to return to the world of Hamelyn Town. Highly recommended for middle grade readers.
S.A. Patrick is one of the few authors that can get the children excited before they even see the cover. This is great but the books have to live up to their high expectations. Thankfully this one did and they all loved it.
A nice wrap up of the trilogy but with the possibility for more. I really enjoyed the Pied Piper story line and agree with the author that we need Griffins.
I haven't read anything from this author and i wasnt aware that this was a third book in the series. With that being said, i loved the magical feel of this book. I will have to read the first two as this one i was lost on some of the aspects but im sure if i read the first two i will catch up.
Even though i had not read the first two it still kept me wanting to read and i will read more besides the first two from this author. I did enjoy this book
Thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review.
