An interesting, mysterious book - with various strands coming together to tell the story of a mother and daughter at its core. A delight to read!
I always love a good story about books, bookstores and finding old or hidden book, journals or diaries. And this is a beautiful story revolving around just that. And a story of discovery, secrets and the past. But beware as this one will make you sob, will break your heart and will make you smile too.
A wonderful story and a wonderfully written book. I love it and would highly recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is book 2 in the Temple River series. Harriet Main moves to the beautiful coastal town of Rivers End with a heavy heart. The bookstore she’s opening on the idyllic main street is a small distraction from the pain of her recent divorce, and the guilt over failing her daughter Olive when she needed her most. When they start buying old books from the area she discovers a diary that she can't put down. The seller, a chef, becomes a mentor to Olive who enjoys cooking. The diary set in the early 60's written by 3 young girls presents a mystery that Harriet and Olive want to solve.
Ich weiß ehrlich gesagt nicht, wie ich dieses Buch bewerten soll, da ich es aufgrund relativ kurzer Ausleihdauer (ohne Verlängerung) nicht lesen konnte.
It is always good to discover a new author (to me) and to discover that said author actually lives in the same State as well? Bonus :)
Harriet has moved to Rivers End with her young adult daughter Olive, after she discovers that her ex-husband has bought a property in her name. Since he has gone off to "find himself" after a health scare, it leaves Harriet and Olive free to take a path in life that they didn't realise they could.
I really liked this story. Being a book nerd myself, I think it would have been nice to run a bookshop, however, I know my limits and I think Harriet is very brave! I like the relationship that Harriet and Olive have too, sometimes it is tricky to negotiate a different kind of relationship once your children become adults and the author tackles this well.
The diary that Harriet discovers and the treasure hunt that Olive and Harriet embark upon, is an interesting adventure which could upset more than one of the locals.
Good plot and likeable characters.
4.5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing.

Harriet Main’s life seems like every reader’s dream; opening a cozy bookshop in a coastal town with her beloved daughter, Olive. I was not expecting the books to open the door to a local mystery long-kept. Acquisition of an old diary invites Olive and Harriet to unravel the clues of four girls and their treasure hunt. What starts off as fun shifts into a tragedy from the past whose echoes can still be felt today.
I think readers with children will very much appreciate the sincere connection between Harriet and her daughter, Olive. I thought their relationship was very sweet and authentic. It made me miss my own mother.
Another note: I wish I had read Temple River #1, I think it would have made me feel more connected to this book. If you’ve read the first book, I’m sure you’ll love this second addition to the series since you’ll have additional context.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Storm publishing for the advanced copy in exchange for my feedback!
A sweet story about how sometimes we find healing and restoration in the most unlikely places, like a box of second hand books that includes a diary. Harriet had just gone through a terrible divorce - looking for change she moves to a new town to open a bookstore. Little does she know that this move is exactly what she needs in a way that she doesn't even know it.
We all seek change, we all want sudden healing. We all want things to fall into place, for terrible things to be replaced with something new. Too often this means we seek out a new house, a new town and even a new career - something starkly different from the thing(s) that left us broken, scarred and hurting.
Harriet and her daughter move, and begin to open a bookstore. A diary leads them on a journey, a treasure hunt that will change their lives as their story becomes intertwined with the story held within the pages of the diary.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this review copy in exchange for an honest review.
Harriet and Olive find a diary among some old books they bought. Caught up in the diary’s story, they try to piece together who’s who.
I really enjoyed this book. Dual timelines are always my favorite. It has some nice light romance which added to the story.
Looking forward to more in this series
Phillipa Nefri Clark has a way with words and The Bookstore at Rivers End is no exception.
A mystery based around an old diary by an anonymous author that was donated to the bookstore in Rivers End, sparks a curiosity in Harriet Main that needs to be solved......
Another page turner by Phillipa that you won't regret picking up and reading to the very end.
Had a hard time getting into the mystery in this book....found myself skipping chunks of the book to get to the end.
A great story of.a mother and daughter who arrived at River's End to start a new life.
As they collect books to start their bookstorw, they never envisaged that 2 books would change what happened to some people of the town.
Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Phillipa Nefri Clark
When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.
Thank you @stormbooks_co and @netgalley for my complimentary copy. My thoughts are my own.
After her recent divorce, HARRIET MAIN and her college-aged daughter, OLIVE, move to a beautiful town in Australia. Harriet’s dream is to open a book store, and as an added plus, Olive is going to work with her. As she and Olive purchase used books, they are surprised to find an old diary among a collection. The donor refuses to take the book back and gives Harriet and Olive permission to read it or destroy it. When an old map falls out with clues to a treasure hunt, they are intrigued and set out to read and follow the clues. They are surprised to uncover a tragic story from 1961.
Meanwhile, Harriet meets a handsome widower, Brock Salisbury, and gradually rediscovers herself as she falls in love again.
With loveable characters, an old mystery, and a new love, this beautifully descriptive novel will delight readers. I felt like I was there in the story as Harriet and Olive one minute detailed clues, and the next, discussed dating fashion. I really enjoyed the scenic town and the old story from 1961. I would classify this as women’s fiction, with just a touch of romance. This was my first book by the author and I will definitely check out the other books in this series.
I read the first book in the temple river series and enjoyed it and the charectors. I did find certain aspects of the "mystery" in this book to be a little farfetched but i very much enjoyed the mother daughter relationship between Harriet and Olive. I read an author recently talking about the lack of middle age romantic stories and iI think this romance was done so well. I'm excited to read more from this author, and the temple river community.
Thank you to Netgalley, Storm publishing, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review, All opinions are my own.
In this modern fiction novel, readers get a taste of historical fiction, romance, and mystery as they travel to the tiny Australian town of Rivers End. Following mother and daughter duo Harriet and Olive after a tumultuous few years (divorce, college, and an abusive relationship), readers follow their journey opening a bookstore in Rivers End, making friends, healing, and solving a decades-old mystery. Flashing back to an unknown narrator’s journal from the 1960s, Harriet and Olive retrace the journal’s steps in an attempt to solve the mystery of Rivers End. Of course, no healing narrative is complete without some challenges, so Harriet and Olive’s pasts reappear in their lives to make things more challenging, but both women persevere. Clark’s characters, especially Harriet and Olive, are dynamic and complex, and their relationships (especially the bond between Harriet and Olive) is heartwarming and a joy to witness through the pages. Other characters, such as the BAMs and Brock, have their own complex backstories and characteristics, and readers will enjoy puzzling out the mystery with our protagonists. A charming, light-hearted novel with a wonderful message and some real power behind it, Clark’s latest novel is a great weekend or vacation choice for all readers.
I really enjoyed this story as it shows a family trying to move on from the past, but the discovery of secrets from the past impact on their future!
Harriet has always had a dream to open a bookstore and that's about to come true. But it comes after the break down of her marriage, so she's nervous about the future and also worried about how it will affect their daughter, Olive, who is with her on this new adventure!
There's the worry too about whether her bookstore will thrive so she does her best to get in with the locals and it's nice seeing the community coming out to support her. Amongst the books that she buys to stock her bookshop, she comes across a diary from the 1960's, and when they start reading it that opens up a whole new story that we see play out and that really added more intrigue to the storyline.
A really enthralling read with lots going on and some really interesting characters created!
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. This is the second book in the Temple River series. I have read the first, although it is not necessary to do so before reading this one. Harriet and Olive are new to the town where they open a bookstore. They are a mother and daughter coming to terms with a recent divorce. Harriet buys some second hand books, which lead them to follow a treasure hunt. In so doing they learn more about the town and themselves. They are made welcome by many locals, some of whom have a background story. Lovely characters, an emotional story at times but an easy read that I was keen to finish. I recommend this book to all.
Not a bad story about the setting up of a bookstore in Australia. Anything to do with books is fine by me. The place names were difficult but the story was good. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
