I really liked her other books so I was super excited to give this one a listen. It was a decent fast paced thriller. Not my favorite but still fine. Ending kept you guessing but I wasn’t as invested as I was in her last book.
No One Can Know
by Kate Alice Marshall
Narrated by Karissa Vacker
Publication 23 Jan 2024 by Macmillan Audio
First off, I adore Kate Alice Marshall. She delivers a tense thriller every single time. But the cherry on top of this? Karissa Vacker as a narrator. Karissa Vacker is my absolutely favourite narrator! She is amazing. I am really picky when it comes to female narrators and Karissa delivers every single time!
Three sisters. The murder of their parents.
In present time, Emma has not told her husband a lot about her past, just that her parents were murdered, she doesn’t talk to her sisters anymore and the folks at the village think she is guilty.
Her perfect life collapses, her husband lost his jobs, she found out she’s pregnant and on top, they might end up homeless. So they move back to the house their parents left the sisters.
Now that one sister has returned, more are bound to follow. Which secrets will be revealed?
The book left me with mixed emotions. A bit disappointed because one of my favourite authors did not deliver the quality I am used to… and I am really not saying this is bad, it’s just not up to par with her other works.
I think Karissa Vacker was the saving grace for me here. The book is very slow paced and if I would t have enjoyed the narration as much as I did, I think I might have skipped ahead, especially the middle part fell a bit flat.
Unfortunately this book cannot hold up to “What Lies in the Woods”, but it was not bad at all. It was different, the pacing was different and also the feel of the whole story. The narration saved this for me big times and that’s why I’ll happily give it four stars.
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and Kate Alice Marshall for this free ALC. I was under no obligation to review, all opinions are my own.
What Lies In The Woods by Kate Alice Marshall was one of my favorite books of last year. Because of that, I was so excited when I received this book. I actually stopped reading a book I was halfway through because I just wanted to start this book. Unfortunately, I was left feeling underwhelmed.
The first half of this story I was trying to convince myself I loved it, but deep down I knew it wasn’t going to be as good as What Lies in the Woods for me. The story moved slowly and when it did pick up the highs were just not that high and the twists were just big enough.
The story follows three sisters who share secrets from their past that involved the murder of their parents. As an adult, they have lost touch but are forced to start talking again once Emma falls on hard times financially and moves back into her childhood home. We get multiple POVs which I normally love but my problem here was I wouldn't say I liked all of the characters. I didn’t have anyone I was rooting for which led to me not caring about where any of the characters ended up.
When you make it to the end you have multiple twists but none of them really shocked me. To go back to What Lies in the Woods, I audibly gasped multiple times for the twists there, so I was expecting more of that.
My excitement for this book is what led to my disappointment. I recommend this book but if you are a fan of What Lies in the Woods just try to go in expecting something different.
This was an interesting read. I can see why some would call it a slow burn, but I enjoyed it. The narrative was descriptive but not too wordy. Just enough suspense to keep the pages turning.
Three sisters find their way back in to each other's lives after many years apart. The tragedy of their parent's murder many years ago raises new questions and brings all the skeletons out of the closet.
Karissa Vacker does a great job narrating this story. Her voice is clear, concise and easy to listen to. I enjoyed all the characters voices and didn't mind when she switched tones to a male voice.
Emma comes back to the house her parents were murdered in still holding so many secrets. Now, she must face the town that still thinks she's a murderer while trying to hold her marriage together.
Wow. I adored this book so much. This was my first thriller audiobook and I couldn't be happier. The narrator was just amazing. I was able to tell all of the characters apart so easily just by the different inflections she added to the voices. And when the action got intense, which it did a lot, she would speed up and really get my heart pounding.
The story itself is well paced and well thought out. I really liked who the chapters would go back and forth from past to present with all of the sisters, really digging deep into their individual stories and pasts. This was such a good thriller that kept me guessing the entire time.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the gifted copy. My reviews are always honest.
I purchased this book through my BOTM and I was struggling to latch on. After hearing one of my favorite narrators did the audiobook for this, I instantly requested through NetGalley. I am so glad I did, because it really improved my reading experience for this particular book.
Kate Alice Marshall is a fantastic author, but this one unfortunately fell a little flat. Due of the predictability and being able to foreshadow all of the events in the beginning, I struggled to love this one.
No One Can Know is a twisty and suspenseful thriller by the author of What Lies in the Woods. In this novel, three sisters try to piece together their past to discover who murdered their parents twenty years ago. All three sisters want to know the truth but they also have their own secrets to hide.
I loved What Lies in the Woods so I immediately requested No One Can Know when I saw it on Netgalley. This book did not disappoint! The plot is fast paced, the characters are interesting and complicated and the twists are unexpected!
The audiobook is narrated by Karissa Vacker. Her voice was made for the twenty-thirty something unreliable narrator with a traumatic past. She does an excellent job of bringing this story to life!
I'm a fan of Marshall's work so I was so glad to get a hold of this one! When a book makes you feel something for the characters, you know you're hooked. I wanted to reach into the pages and shake Emma! I had more than a few words for Nathan... Ugh. I sympathized with the sisters at different points in time, and would have loved to learn even more about each of them. Daphne especially. I gave this 4 stars and not 5 because I feel like the mystery was a bit drawn out in the middle. The start and end are better paced and kept my interest. Still worth the read!! I'll always keep an eye out for more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio ARC of No One Can Know! I was thoroughly impressed with What Lies In The Woods, Kate Alice Marshall’s 2023 release and was ecstatic to read more from her. No One Can Know did not disappoint! I was intrigued from the start and appreciated the multi-POV to tell the story, it wasn’t overused and was done just right, a rare feat in my opinion.
There were twists and turns that genuinely made me gasp and I was theorizing throughout the book. The audio was well done and the writing immersed me in the story. I can’t wait to read more adult thrillers from Kate Alice Marshall! 4.5 stars!
I really enjoyed this book! I love the back and forth timelines that lead up to climax at the end. I also enjoyed not knowing what was going to happen, but having a few different theories. Overall, enjoyable!
Although I was able to easily guess the twists, I still enjoyed this audiobook. Quick and easy listen and the narrator was great.
Eh- didn’t love it.
3 sisters wake up to find their parents dead, but is one of them responsible? Fast forward to adulthood…one of the sisters is about to be homeless and the only place left to go is her old house, where the crime took place. This move opens up old wounds and forces the sisters to communicate again about that night.
I felt like there wasn’t enough depth to the characters, which is probably why I wasn’t invested in the storyline. There wasn’t anything different in this book that I haven’t read many times before.
Audiobook narration- I thought the narrator did a nice job with changing her voice to match the different characters. She had a clear and pleasant tone.
Thank you NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the ARC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
No One Can Know was a fantastic thriller/domestic suspense, that kept me committed to working out the details until the end. And even when I thought there were no more secrets to discover, there were more. The twists and turns were just that good. I could not put this story down, and refused to go to bed a second night without it finished (I wouldn’t have gone to bed the first night, except I started the audiobook late, and had to finally go to sleep so I could participate in life the next morning).
If you like family secrets, drama, and stories about sisters, this is for you. If you like domestic suspenses/thrillers with female main characters, this book is for you. In general, if you like anything dark and twisty, this book is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I listened to the audiobook, which was well done by a single narrator who brought the story to life. I listened at 1.75x speed, which is my normal speed. Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this advanced audiobook copy.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook. This book had a very familiar vibe about it. I enjoyed the story and the sister connection aspect of the story. What I didn’t love was the solving the story, and then solving it again and than finally solving it. It was probably written to have twists and twists but to me it felt redundant.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for review!
This book was definitely worth a read! I would give it about 3.5 stars rounded up; it was fast paced and definitely had my shocked at times but at the same time, the ending felt like it was missing something… I DID guess it fairly early on into the book.
However, I LOVED the switching perspectives between sisters, especially including the flashbacks. It made the story so much more complex, and each time a new perspective was switched it was clearly planned specifically for the scene ahead. Solid read!!
Sisters. Secrets. Murder.
After a night that ended in the murder of their parents, three sisters try to come to terms with what really happened in their house of horrors. The family secrets run DEEP and fourteen years later, it’s time for them to finally tell the truth.
I love a good unreliable narrator (or 3), especially when there’s a strained, dysfunctional relationship between sisters. The pacing is riveting from the start and I was hooked! The more the story develops, the more we realize just how loyal and protective this twisted family is of each other. It was entertaining the way THAT fateful night played out. One of the sisters in particular gave me chills…I’ll let you read it to figure out which one. 🫣
The only thing that kept it from being a 5 star was the unorganized chaos at the end; there was whiplash of twists and reveals. While they were GOOD, (don’t get me wrong) I had to go back a few times and reread to keep it all straight.
I loved the storytelling so I definitely recommend it for fans of:
•cold cases,
•tragic family dynamics,
•gothic thrillers!
TW: Child Abuse.
This was a great, twisty take on the family murder thriller. The ending was surprising, the characters were compelling (Except for the main character's husband), and it was just the right mix of spooky and mysterious. I read a lot of thrillers, and often I find that I cannot be surprised by twists and turns. I absolutely loved the ending! I thought it was gripping, surprising, and makes you wonder what you would do for your family. I love books that make you rethink everything! I will definitely reccomend this book to my friends and book club. Such a fun read!

Ok, this book's one flaw was Ned. I hate to agree with Daphne, but he was just awful. I can see why Emma would be drawn to him, but I was not sad when he died. I was surprised when Daphne was revealed as his murderer, and that Emma moved on and was ok with her being around her daughter. I was also very surprised that Daphne murdered their father - but I think abuse can push people pretty far. A nice, solid thriller for sure and I look forward to Kate Alice Marshall's next book.
I felt like it was too long and could have been much, much shorter. The narrator was terrific and likely the main reason why I finished.
While I was initially intrigued, I grew tired of the repetition and lack of movement with the plot. I also felt the author was trying to give me a headache with all the twists at the end. Even now I have to think hard to remember who actually did it. For such a slow moving and minimal character story it was strangely convoluted. I'm not even sure it can be called a "thriller" because so much of it is domestic drama and family drama.
Emma hasn’t been completely forthcoming about her past with her husband. He knows her parents are dead and she doesn’t have a relationship with her sisters. But when she finds out she’s pregnant and her husband lost his job, they end up without any other option but to move into the house she grew up in, the house her parents were murdered in. Soon he’ll find out they were wealthy and secrets will have to return to the surface.
No One Can Know is an addictive page turner! I was fortunate enough to receive it as an advanced listeners copy and as soon as I hit play, I knew I needed a physical copy to keep on my shelves. I bought a BOTM copy to keep! Let me just say the amount of twists will give you whiplash but in the best way possible! I really enjoy books that take me on a wild ride and keeps me guessing all the way through. Kate Alice Marshall really sets up the book quite nicely and with a bang from page one while holding your attention throughout. I absolutely loved What Lies in the Woods and this too was a banger! No One Can Know was narrated by Karissa Vacker and she killed it! I’ll listen to any audiobook she narrates. No One Can Know is out 1/23/24 and you need to get your hands on it!
Thank you so much NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the ALC and giving me the chance to listen and review it honestly.
Happy reading!
Thank you for granting this audiobook arc.
This was a good read. I found the plot easy to follow and the perfect pace. I only wished they had different narrators for the sisters. I found myself confused about who was talking to whom in some sections. I was engaged with the story from the beginning and I think others will enjoy this next book from Kate Alice Marshall.
