I feel like there was so much potential wrapped up in this psychological thriller, but much of it was lost. Emma's reactions were not believable. I questioned every move she made because many of them made no sense, especially towards the end of the book. The flashbacks that Juliette experienced did not come across very smoothly. It often caused me confusion as I attempted to follow along. The sense of a small town charm with the dark past that involved these 3 sisters 14 years ago was lacking. I loved the house, the theme that centered around it, and the darkness that seeped through the pages from it. I think it may have actually been my favorite character. Although I found some faults, I did buckle in for the ride because I wanted to know who did it. You're going to have to read all the way though to the end to find out if no one can *still* know.

This was such a twisty one! It’s about a couple that have some financial difficulty and have to move back to the wife’s childhood home. The wife has a dark past - her parents were murdered in the home. The husband doesn’t know what happened. Once they move in, things begin to unravel.

No One Can Know, written by Kate Alice Marshall, is a fictional thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end! This book is about sisters Juliette, Emma, and Daphne, whose parents died when they were teenagers. After Emma has had some changes to the life she lives with her husband Nathan, they move back to the house that the girls grew up in, that she hasn’t been back in since the death of her parents. But moving back has her remembering parts of her unhappy past, and questioning what really happened, and if she is safe.
This book is told in different chapters from different points of view, and at different time periods. I enjoyed seeing different ways that the sisters cared for each other, and liked that the sisters seemed to be figuring things out during the book at the same time as the reader. This was my first book by this author, but it will not be my last! Thank you to NetGalley and to author and publisher of this book for an ALC in exchange for an unbiased review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy.

I liked What Lies in the Woods and was not disappointed. This was just as twisty as the previous one. I’m kinda curious what the author will write next.

I was just getting deeper into the mystery/thriller genre as a reader when this author released 'What Lies in the Woods'. The reviews were mostly positive, and by all accounts, it was her breakout novel. For some reason, I never got around to reading it, but when NetGalley made this one available to me, I decided to dive in and was excited to do so. Unfortunately, 'No One Can Know' failed to launch for me. The protagonist was a very hard to grasp character, with no solid defining traits that grounded me in what she might or might do, say, or believe. In fact, I could say that about all the characters. They were shadowy and ill-defined, casting about sometimes almost irrationally, difficult to like or dislike, or care about at all and that for me is the kiss of death. When all else fails, I would at least like to hate a character. But no dice with that here. The dialogue was at times almost like filler ... furthering neither the plot, nor my sense of the characters. In short, I was disappointed by this book, and even 89% of the way in, considered not finishing it.

I can't cast aspersions on the author's ability to write, however. There were many clever turns of phrase and vividly descriptive moments, but the book in its entirety felt like a great first draft that either needed more time to be polished, or a better editor to help shape it. The labyrinth of clues were exhausting rather than intriguing and one entire character (a main one at that) felt unnecessary. I can't help but suspect that with the breakneck pace of publishing today, this one was rushed to release.

Audiobook Note: Karissa Vacker is a very talented voice actor. Her male voices are convincingly male, and she brings emotion to every line. Alas, even her excellent work did not make this an excellent audiobook experience.

Kate Alice Marshall's "No One Can Know" is a captivating journey into the heart of mystery and suspense, and the audiobook version brings its chilling narrative to life with expert precision.

Narrated with a sense of urgency and intrigue, the audiobook immerses listeners in a world of secrets and deception, where every twist and turn keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Marshall skillfully weaves together a tense and atmospheric narrative, creating a sense of unease that lingers throughout the book. The small-town setting adds to the claustrophobic atmosphere, as Emma navigates through a web of lies and deception to uncover the dark secrets hidden within her community.

With its expert narration and pulse-pounding plot, "No One Can Know" is a must-listen for fans of thrilling mysteries. Prepare to be enthralled from start to finish as you unravel the secrets hidden within its pages.

This was a blast! A clear homage to Shirley Jackson's WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE, a terrifying title that has always been one of my favorites! While the cover and premise had me thinking this would be a little bit more about the house (my favorite kind of book revolves around a bitchy house!) I loved the cat-and-mouse dynamic between this trio of naughty sisters who have spent decades covering for each other's dark secrets. The world was sturdy and the characters downright dirty. Kate Alice Marshall has delivered a damn compelling mystery with just enough heart racing to get the thriller fans hooked!

🎧Song Pairing: When The Party’s Over - Billie Eilish

💭What I thought would happen:

Based on Kate’s prior works I ain’t getting answers until the bitter end and good luck figuring it out😂

📖What actually happens:

Emma and her sisters have cleaned up all the blood and any indication that they were in the house when their parents were murdered.

Fast forward to when they’re adults. The sisters no longer talk but still own the murder property. Emma’s husband has lost his job and the best option is to live in Emma’s old house for a bit. The second they get there they realize the community never forgot and has yet to forgive.

🗯Thoughts/sassy musings:

Wow! Kate always writes a wild ride and this one is no different. I will say this one had my full attention until about 75% in where everything went to hell in a hand basket…

I will continue to fangirl for my homegirl’s thrillers. They are everything I need to break up the steamy romances.

Why am I picturing the flashbacks in like 1912 like they’re all dressed like characters in Titanic 😂 have you ever logically known you were way off with your imagination while reading?! For clarity it’s the late 80s 🪦

I absolutely loved this author's previous book. What Lies in The Woods so I was so excited to receive an early copy of her newest book No One Can Know. I absolutely loved this one and thought the writing was brilliant and beautiful. Kate Alice Marshall is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine, and I look forward to reading her next book!

As far as the audiobook goes, I absolutely loved it!

Karissa Vacker -- omg Karissa Vacker 😍 She is my VERY favorite audiobook narrator, and she did a phenomenal job as usual! The story just comes alive when she's telling it, and is impossible to stop listening. Tbh I would probably watch to a live stream of paint drying on a wall if she was the one talking about it... just saying 😆

Started off a bit slow and I wasn‘t too sure about it, but man did it pick up and what a wild ride!I loved the past and present narration, it added to the intensity of trying to figure out what happened. I was often twisted up over who the true murderer was and I always appreciate that. I was happy that my prediction was correct, even if I was way off on how it went down (I just don't see how there is anyway to predict the how!).

Another chilling, emotional, disturbing, and fantastic read by author Kate Alice Marshall. Her books continue to amaze me as she does such an incredible job drawing readers in and lashing them about.

"No One Can Know" follows Emma, and her two sisters, as she returns to the home her parents were murdered in. A murder that was never solved, and the town believes she committed. As Emma starts pulling the threads, her life unravels in ways the reader didn't see coming. With an explosive tale of twists, Marshall does it again!

I listened to the audiobook, and I must say: the narrator, Karissa Vacker, is one of my favorite voice actors of all time. She takes suspense to a whole new level. Taking Karissa’s voice and adding an intense mystery novel to it, there’s no possible way I won’t love it.

Although the story had one of my most hated tropes of all time, I really enjoyed it. (I won’t mention which one because it might be a spoiler.) The broken family and loving sibling themes were touching, and the mystery was a complete surprise to me.

If you’re looking for a fun, twisty thriller/mystery, pick this up! You definitely won’t be disappointed.

I had high expectations for this book as I loved What Lies in the Woods, but I felt like it was never ending. Every time I thought I was nearing the end it seemed like yet another twist was thrown in, as if the author was saying "but wait, there's more!" Every character seemed shallow and only in it for themselves, but that comes with the nature of the book. Told part in the present and part in flash backs meant to keep you guessing, this book revealed its cards pretty earlier on. I will read another book by this author, as I enjoyed the other one so much.

The narrator, Karissa Vacker, did an amazing job, as always. Her inflection at all the right times, and change in tone to tell characters apart was wonderful. I always enjoy listening to one of her narrations.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an advanced listening copy of this book.

The parents of Emma, Juliette and Daphne, were murdered fourteen years ago. Emma was suspected to be the killer, but all of the sisters were carrying secrets from that day.

I went into this one with higher expectations than I should have. I liked the premise here but saw everything coming and didn't feel surprised when 'reveals' started happening, even though it was one of those 'or this happened' types. It was just a meh read for me.

I loved the narrator though and would listen to them again!

This was one of my favorite thrillers of the year so far. I really enjoyed the plot of this book and all of the twists and turns of it. The characters kept me on the edge of my seat, I didn’t know who to trust or who to root for. It was an exhilarating ride!

Loved the family ties and intertwined characters in this book. It was a definite ‘who did it’ until the very end! Each sister had a different perspective of what actually happened in their parent’s murders.

I was so excited to receive this audiobook as an ARC. I loved Kate Alice Marshall's "What Lies in the Woods" and was hoping for a similar thrilling story. This one was just okay. I enjoyed listening to it, but it was slow and felt dragged out. I felt the older and younger sisters' characters could have been as developed as the MC sister and it would have been more interesting to read about than all of the drama and interaction between the MC and her husband, which didn't really add to the story in my opinion. Overall, this book was a pretty good listen, but not as good as the author's previous book. I LOVE this narrator, Karissa Vacker. She has narrated several audiobooks I have listened to in the past and I always recognize her voice right away.

I read and enjoyed Kate Alice Marshall’s previous novel “What Lies in the Woods.” The description for “No One Can Know” was intriguing and I was looking forward to getting started.

When Emma returns home one afternoon, she is surprised to find her husband, Nathan is also home already. Then he says “We need to talk”. It turns out, Nathan has just lost his job. This news is especially upsetting since they just put down $10,000 on a house that they now can’t afford. Unfortunately, that money is non-refundable. Their duplex is going up for sale and they will have to leave by the end of the month. On top of all of that, Emma is pregnant.

Nathan suggests living in the house Emma owns with her estranged sisters. Emma hasn’t spoken to her sisters since their parents died years earlier. Emma doesn’t want to go back to the house or to Arden Hills. Unfortunately with no money, no job, and a baby on the way? Emma may not have a choice. They need a place to live.

“People in Arden Hills don’t forget”

Emma has told Nathan most of what happened in her past but there’s a few things she hasn’t mentioned. What will happen when Nathan hears the entire truth? Will Emma and Nathan regret their decision before they even get there?

A compelling and exciting read!!

I really liked this audiobook. The storyline was engaging and original with some good twists and turns. I did find the ending a little bit rushed but still thought this was a great read. The story was narrated by Karissa Vacker who was excellent as usual. She is definitely one of my favorite narrators.

I look forward to seeing what kind of story Kate Alice Marshall comes up with next!

I'd like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.
