OMG THESE PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO COMMUNICATE! I knew it was gonna be that guy as the bad guy! This was a wild read but I just kept yelling at them to actually talk to each other! And Emma's husband was just a total bag of dicks and got what he deserved (at least in fiction)! This was my 2nd book by Kate Alice Marshall and she is now on my always-read list!!
I don't know, with all theses thrillers you have to come with some shock/twist value. This just didn't do it for me. I was glad I was able to listen to the audio, because it may have been a DNF. It just wasn't my fave as far as thrillers go.
This my third book from Marshall and she just continues to surprise me with fantastic, binge-worthy reads each time. I’ve read both her adult fiction and young adult fiction, and truly think she has mastered meeting expectations for both.
Our main character, Emma, is clearly hiding secrets about her past and about her parents' deaths. But does she even know the truth behind some of the secrets she’s hiding? That’s what readers get to find out alongside Emma!
Marshall chooses to intricately reveal more and more about the night in question which gives readers a chance to guess at the truth before Emma can reach her own conclusions. On the flipside, readers are also experiencing the present day timeline with Emma where a series of troubling events unfold that may or may not have a connection to her past. Both timelines and the various perspectives we got on them aided in making this story well-rounded. I loved learning about both and determining where secondary characters played a part in each.
**4.5-stars**
No One Can Know is the most recent Adult release from beloved author, Kate Alice Marshall, who made her Adult Debut last January with What Lies in the Woods. I enjoyed that quite a bit, so have been anxiously awaiting this release. Happily, it didn't disappoint for a moment. I listened to the audiobook and yet again, Karissa Vacker's stellar narration knocked it out of the park.
In this story we meet Emma, who after her husband, Nathan, loses his job, and essentially their housing, has to come clean to him about that fact that she actually already owns a home. It has the potential to save them.
As you can imagine, he's surprised, but the truth is, Emma hasn't told him much about her past. He knows her parents are dead and that she's estranged from her two sisters, other than that, he knows nothing of the bloody and tragic events that shaped Emma's life.
The situation is that Emma owns her parent's home jointly with her sisters. They can't sell it, but they can live in it. Without having much of a choice, and trust, Emma would do anything else if she could, they move in. Unfortunately, moving back to her hometown and into her family home means that Emma's going to have to come clean with Nathan about a few more things...
For example, like the fact that her parents were actually murdered in the home and many in the town believed that Emma was the one responsible. Emma's sudden presence comes as a shock to the town and yet again, rumors and speculations begin to swirl. She sort of figured that would happen though, that's why she stayed away for so long.
Her being back has another, more unexpected consequence. It lures her sisters back too. The three have never actually talked about what happened. Each of them has their own thoughts and secrets regarding that fateful night. But are their secrets continuing to put them in more danger? If Emma didn't do it, then who did? And will they ever be able to rekindle their once loving relationships?
I found this set-up so interesting. I liked Emma as a character from the start, but I hated her husband. Those feelings continued throughout and only helped to solidify my connection to the story. My ire towards Nathan alone, kept me glued to the pages. I felt bad for Emma, having lost her parents and then her sisters. It seemed unfair to me, as she seemed genuinely distraught by the events that had led to the family demise.
We eventually get the perspectives of Emma's sisters, Juliette, now going by J.J., and Daphne. While I didn't have the same level of feelings for them that I felt for Emma, I did find them interesting; messy, but interesting.
I loved getting the back-and-forth between the past and present. I always enjoy that, as the puzzle pieces are set in place. I love just sitting back and enjoying the ride as everything becomes clear. I will say, this one kept me guessing for way longer than I expected. I think Marshall did a great job of keeping enough possibilities in play to keep the Reader engaged and guessing. It wasn't quite clear until almost the very end.
I suspected everyone at one time or another. I also enjoyed how the pace steadily increased the further you got along, until it was pedal to the floor, full throttle, full speed ahead!
I'm really enjoying KAM in this Adult space. I also love her YA work, so it's clear to me, she'll be successful with whatever she chooses to write. She's just that good. If you haven't yet read Kate Alice Marshall, I feel like this could be a fun place to start. I definitely recommend this audiobook too, if that is an option for you. Karissa Vacker is one of my all-time favorite narrators and she definitely helped to bring this story to life.
Thank you so much to the publisher, Macmillan Audio, for providing me with a copy to read and review. This was fantastic and certainly delivered on the tense family drama and deep dark secrets I was expecting. I can't wait to see what Marshall gives us next!
I think the narration for this book was great! It flowed well + the narrators did a fabulous job at conveying the story. Overall the story was a bit slow for me. I felt like we had to wait quite a while for the story to get interesting, I would recommend it to people who enjoy a slowe paced thriller.
This was the first book I have listened to by Katie Alice Marshall and I can't wait to read more of her books. I really enjoyed Karissa Vacker who narrated this book. I think she did a god job telling this story. This was such a great listen. This book will have you on the edge of your seat with all of the twists. You definitely have to pay attention as there are a lot of characters in this book. If you're looking for a really interesting thriller that will have you questioning everything then this book is for you. I would recommend this book.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to this ARC for my honest opinion.
This book moves through various timelines and perspectives, which makes it compelling, especially as you try to guess who the killer is. The plot is engaging and the characters are interesting, though none of them are the least bit likable. I had absolutely no idea who the killer was until the very end. Overall a good read!
I was really excited to read this book after loving What Lies in the Woods but was a little let down. The story was really well written but I didn't have the connection with the main character that keeps you focused. The beginning and ending were really good but I found myself struggling to stay focused while listening to the audiobook through the middle of the story.
This was a CRAZY book!
We open up with Emma and her husband fighting…
They’ve just gone into contract on a home they cannot afford…when he lets her know that he lost his job… and now they REALLY can’t afford it!
Emma is not working, as she was recently in a bad accident and is just recovering…
They are at a loss for what they are going to do…where they will live.
Their lease on the apt is up. The house fell through. And now they have nowhere to go.
Did I mention that their small family might also be growing??
Emma finally breaks down to say that she and her two sisters have their parents home… the one she NEVER wanted to return to.
She hasn’t spoken to her sisters for years.
Her parents are dead…murdered in that very same house…
And, the small town still thinks that SHE is the one responsible for their deaths…
AND, this is all in the first 15 minutes or so of the book!!
Quite the opening!!
We bounce back and forth between when the girls were little, and present day.
Some of the scenes will make you want to smack the parents…I can assure you of that! And if you are faint of heart, you may need to skip thru some of these scenes, as there is much emotional abuse as well as a good amount of physical abuse…from the family! And they were just kids…in their teens.
Did I mention that it’s a small town? And the cops may be crooked…or are they just boobs??
The things that came up in this one…well, just twist after twist after twist!
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

A thriller and suspense novel rooted in sisterhood and secrets.
Emma and her husband move to her hometown for a new start when financial and personal struggles strike them, leading them to her childhood home...where both of her parents were murdered years before. The move comes with its own struggles as much of the town believes Emma was responsible. As she is connected with her estranged sisters, all carrying their own secrets from that night and the years since, something sinister is invading her life once again, putting everyone in danger.
I thought this was a decent thriller that while predictable in a few parts, left me guessing on a lot of it until the final few pages. The narration was well-done and easy to distinguish between characters.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. This is out now.
I was so excited to read this book since I loved What Lies In the Woods! It was one of my fave books of 2023. This was a great thriller too although I liked What Lies in the Woods more. I loved listening to the audiobook narrated by the amazing Karissa Vacker. I enjoyed the multiple POVs and the alternating timelines of Then and Now. I liked how there was a secret kept until the very end of the book. I liked how this book featured three sisters so it was not only about an unsolved murder but also their strained relationships. I’d definitely read this authors next book!
"My parents are dead."
It's the last true thing she says for a long time.
If ever a murder mystery was ripe for a prime time series, it's definitely No One Can Know by intricate twisty thriller author Kate Alice Marshall. It's filled with so many gotcha twists and turns that left me either gasping or screaming, "I knew it!"
Emma is devastated when her husband Nathan (a bit of a spoiler but my least favorite husband ever), tells her he lost his job and it's not a good time to keep the baby they found about that day. To keep her child she tells him about the house her and two sisters own but has been empty for 14 years...since her parents were brutally murdered there and the police accused Emma of killing them but couldn't prove it. She agrees they can live there to save money but now she has to contact her estranged sisters who haven't spoken since that deadly night.
I am always blown away listening to voice actress Karissa Vacker. Once again, she has created not only distinct voices for each character but her tone changes up the tense moments tenfold.
This fun mystery had me changing my mind on the murderer multiple times. The sisters are so different. Juliette, the oldest, is the obedient daughter biding her time to escape the wrath of her abusive parents. Daphne, the youngest, is quiet, always watching, dreaming of making her parents pay in a way some might say is sociopathic; and there's middle sister Emma, who just wants to be a normal teenager. It all changes when she comes home from sneaking out with cute Gabriel to find Juliette in different clothes than she left with and Daphne covered in blood. Emma looks at them and quietly says, "No one can know."
I received a free copy of this audiobook from #macmillanaudio via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book was a 4 star until the very end and they I gave It a 3.5 stars. I loved The book and audio. The end was very indecisive which made it hard to follow. I think The ending could have been done better.
Three sisters, so many secrets, and an atmospheric setting--what's not to love? I found this novel to be twisty, complex, and well-paced, with interesting characters. Listening to the audio version, while I loved the narrator's voice, I often found myself confused as to who was talking, because there was not enough differentiation in the voices of the sisters. That being said, I enjoyed the story and all the twists and turns.
This was such a good book! Karissa Vacker did an amazing job of bringing both the characters and the story to life.
I enjoyed Emma as our main character, and following along in her journey of not only having to move back to her childhood home where her parents were murdered but also where she was the main and favored suspect by the local police. As the past is slowly revealed we realize that Emma isn't the only one who had a motive to kill her parents, and uncovering the secrets of the past leads us on a twisty path to figuring out who the killer could be.
While I did figure out who the killer is it didn't dim my enjoyment of this twisty-turny story at all, I liked the path the story took to get there, and figuring out the motives behind the killing and the general tone of the book kept me hooked until the end. There were people I was rooting for, and a few that I hoped might end in the grave by the end, and I loved seeing Emma and her sisters grow closer after being estranged for so long.
Kate Alice Marshall is one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to see what she is going to come out with next!
Kate Alice Marshall new book is insanely good! I couldn’t put it down!
There is something so special about the bond between sisters, but can that bond be broken when you find both of your parents murdered and can’t help but think one of your sisters is responsible!?!
This book is filled with secrets! And those secrets are starting to unravel!
I just reviewed No One Can Know by Kate Alice Marshall. #NetGalley
Absolutely loved this audiobook. I felt that I was listening to a crime documentary podcast the whole time. Such a great story. Loved the twists and turns. I would easily recommend this to my friends. Thank you netgalley and Macmillan Audio
First things first, I am really thankful that I was able to get an ARC of this book. I was really happy about that.
Now, I gotta say that my favorite thing about the book were the characters. And the narrator. Karissa Vacker was great. Made me like them even more.
The general mystery plot was not my favorite, and maybe it needed a little editing on the events. But, because I was following these 3 sisters, I ended up enjoying the ride more. I feel like that's what makes me enjoy Kate Alice Marshall's work more.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and I really liked the narrator. I thought she did a great job bringing this story to life and I’ve listened to several of her books and think she is particularly well suited to thrillers. I liked that you get to see the story through multiple perspectives and in dual timelines. Emma hasn’t been home in years because when she was a teenager her parents were murdered and she was the prime suspect. And while she was never arrested the entire town was sure it was her. After the investigation her older sister left never to communicate again and when she aged out of foster care her younger sister wanted nothing to do with her. After her husband messes up and they lose their life savings with no one to go and a baby on the way Emma is forced to return to her childhood home which has been sitting empty waiting for them. But memories run long and everyone is still certain she is guilty and her husband doesn’t seem to like what he’s learning about Emma.
This one had potential for me but it just fell a little flat. The premise was about three sisters whose parents were killed and it was believed that one of the sisters killed them, The story was about Emma who was the accused and her husband moved back to her childhood home and how her past still haunts her and her town. However, she started to look into it and uncovers stuff from the past that could change everything. We also get to see her sisters and what they know and how that plays into everything.
