Iris, having narrowly avoided the tragic fate of her kidnapped and trafficked twin sister, seeks proof of what happened to her by interning at the creepy Shoal Island Hospital for the criminally insane. She quickly discovers that the hospital harbors deep, sinister secrets, realizing the danger extends beyond its patients and into the very essence of the institution itself.

Tarryn Fisher's books can be hit or miss for me, and, unfortunately, this one didn't quite hit the mark. The beginning of the book started strong, capturing my interest with its intriguing storyline. However, I guessed the major twist early on which was a disappointment. I hoped the journey towards this twist would keep me engaged, but I found Iris, especially her present-day portrayal, to be boring. The segments showing her as a teenager were more interesting to read. I felt the story lacked the suspense needed to make the predictable twist compelling. I ended up rating this three stars because even though I finished this book in a day, I found the overall story to just be okay.

This book was a little to practice and unconnected for me. I felt the characters needed to be fleshed out more so I cared.

I absolutely love the mind twisted adventure that is Tarryn Fisher books!

Good Half Gone is definitely that and then some. It hooked me at the start and kept me flipping pages to see what was going to happen next. This book definitely took me by surprise and I loved the way it all played out!

Okay, this is not at all what I thought it was going to be, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Tarryn Fisher can sometimes be hit or miss for me, but whenever she pops up with a new book, I find myself drawn to it. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised with this book.

First of all, the dual timeliness definitely did it for me. While I struggled a little bit with Iris in the past, having that information was helpful to the overall story. When Piper goes missing, she's labeled as a runaway, but Iris and Gram know better. They do everything they can to find her, which is difficult with a limited income. And Iris never forgets about her sister, intent on finding her at any cost.

While I'm not sure I would have had the strength to do the things that Iris does in the present, I loved her bravery throughout this book. I had my own suspicions throughout the novel, but the ending was still a bit of a shock to me. I loved the twist that Tarryn included, which made this book a total winner for me.

If you're like me and unsure about Fisher's book, I can promise this is one you'll want to read.

Wow! The twist toward the end of this book is crazy! This book is about a case in which a twin girl is kidnapped right in front of her sister. After years of trying to get the police to truly investigate the case she decides to do her own investigation. The prep takes years of planning on her part. The results make a great story. This book starts out a little slow but believe me, you will have no trouble getting into the second half of the book. I would like to thank @NetGalley for allowing me to read the ARC of this book! I recommend it!

I was so stoked to receive an ARC of "Good Half Gone" as I loved Tarryn Fisher's previous works,
"The Wives" and "An Honest Lie". Miss Fisher is the queen of a plot twist and is no stranger to writing a compelling unreliable character. I raced through the last 20% of the book and loved how the book flipped through past and present. 3.5/5🌟
(Just because I did guess the ending🫢)
On sale 3/19! Thank you NetGalley, HTP Books, and Graydon House Books for the early digital copy!

The beginning was a thrilling start. And then the last 10% is a suspenseful and surprising. The in between was like swimming through Jell-O. From the premise, I hoped for more. Books about twins are intriguing to me as I have a twin sister. Unfortunately thhere were so many things in this book that did not add up. The narrative includes Past and Present timelines, but the Present seemed to jump back and forth. There were also some inconsistencies in the Past timeline. Perhaps this was rushed to publication? Possibly my ARC has been corrected since I downloaded? It is telling that I enjoyed her Afterword more than the book itself. . . If you are a Tarryn Fisher fan, you may find this is a winner for you. I am aware that I may be an outlier. It just didn't work for me.

By far my absolute favorite Tarryn Fisher book so far 👏🏼👏🏼 There’s something about a dark thriller that’s set in a criminally insane hospital that just does it for me. This was everything you could want in a thriller - dark, shocking and a wild twist at the end that you never see coming 🤌🏼

Huge shoutout to @netgalley and @graydonhousebooks for the ARC!

This absolute must read will be released on March 19th 😍

I was hooked from page one, but unfortunately that did not last very long. The start of the book was great - thriller, family drama, questions about what happened and why. Who can you trust? But as the book went on, that incredible draw continued to simmer. The character is repetitive. The story line becomes too complicated - too many smaller side stories that take away from the main one. They are mostly unnecessary for the main story line either. That being said, I was taking on an emotional roller coaster through this book. A missing sister, a sick grandmother, a young child and a drug addicted mom. There are some incredibly well done psychological thriller parts, especially early on in the book. Overall, parts were really well done and other parts fell flat for me.

Thank you netgalley for my advanced reader copy.

I normally ready Romance but when I saw Tarryn Fisher after reading her collab with Colleen Hoover, I had to read this. Oh my gosh it had me hooked and playing detective from the beginning. I felt proud of myself when I guessed a few story pieces. The best kind of book…unpredictable!

Iris’s sister was kidnapped 20 years ago. The case went cold and the kidnapper was never found. Iris now has a son and is interning at a hospital for the criminally insane. She is determined to figure out the truth about her sisters disappearance. Overall I enjoyed this book. I did find some parts to move a little slowly but I did want to continue to read to figure out what happened!

Having read and enjoyed The Wives by Tarryn Fisher, I was excited to have the chance to review her upcoming title, Good Half Gone. The beginning of the novel starts off with a bang, and the phone call transcript with 9-1-1 was a great hook. I also liked the Past and Present narration, but soon after the start of the book, I was lost. There were so many alternate plot lines that ultimately contributed - in my opinion - nothing to the story. I can't even make the argument for it being for character development or to understand Iris's motivations, because it didn't do that, either. I'd say about 85% of the book was bogged down by these plot lines and unnecessary events, and there was a distinct lack of suspense, too.

The final 10% of the book made up for that lack of suspense, but it was almost too much. The climax came out of nowhere, and the resolution was just okay. I don't have much else to say about Good Half Gone except it took me a month to finish it, and that I'm a little disappointed with Fisher's newest book.

Thank you to the publisher via NetGalley for providing me with a digital advanced copy of Good Half Gone by Tarryn Fisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are not influenced by any third parties.

Piper and Iris are twins but very different, Piper loves the limelight and being the center of attention and Iris prefers staying in the background. They didn’t have the easiest childhood especially with a mother whose addicted to drugs, they finally find some stability when they live with their grandmother. One day spent at the mall and going to the movies with a couple boys they don’t know very well, Iris watches in horror when Piper is kidnapped, no one besides their grandmother is believing Iris and that includes the police they assume Piper just took off. As time goes by and no clues are found the case goes cold.
Years later Iris feels like now is the perfect time to finally get the answers she’s been desperately searching for. She has gotten an internship for her masters program , at the infamous isolated Shoal Island Hospital for the criminally insane. This is because the monster who she believes has hurt or possibly killed her sister might be one of the violent patients there in area D. Does she really know if he is the criminal or could her plan hurt someone innocent , all she knows is she needs answers. We follow along with Iris as she immerses herself within corridors of the state hospital. The more she’s there Iris soon realizes that something more dark and sinister is beneath the surface of the Shoal, and the ending will shock you! I loved this book the layers and characters grabbed my attention and I couldn’t put the book down!

This book is completely bingeable.

Almost a decade ago, Iris's twin sister, Piper was kidnapped right in front of her. The police don't believe her and consider Piper a runaway. Now, Iris is still determined to find answers. She has worked her way into a prestigious internship at an asylum for the criminally insane, located on a secluded island. She believes that her sister is dead, and the man who killed her is held there.

Thoughts -
I really liked this one a lot. I thought the writing was great and it kept me hooked from start to finish. Usually, I don't like unrealistic police plotlines, but this worked for me. You need to be prepared for the lazy police investigation to just not really make sense. Iris identifies one of the kidnappers but doesn't know the name of his two friends. These are presumably high schoolers, and the police can't seem to get anywhere with the info, which seemed off to me.

I liked that the book is split between the past and present with little mini plot twists as the story unfolds. I don't want to give too much away, but it was done in a way that didn't feel like the narrator was keeping secrets, we just hadn't gotten to that part of the story yet.

The author did a great job with all the characters working in the asylum. I had an uneasy feeling the entire time I was reading the present timeline, which was exactly how I felt I should feel. The ending was a little bit much and wildly unrealistic, but I enjoyed that there weren't really any plot holes. Typically, I dislike unrealistic endings if they don't make sense. This one isn't believable, but it was all explained and tied up nicely.

Overall, I read this book in two days, and could have done it in one, if I hadn't started reading so late at night when I first started it. I will be looking for more books by this author.

Just like all of Tarryn’s previous books (both romance and thriller), Good Half Gone was entirely bingeable and such a fast paced, quick easy read. I’m not sure how ultra-hardcore thriller fans are going to be with this one, but as someone who enjoys a twisty thriller every once in a while, I absolutely enjoyed it.

The setting of a Pysch Hospital for dangerous criminals set on a remote island in Washington state’s San Juan Islands was so spooky and perfect and I especially loved the dual timelines we had going on from past and present.

I will say the ending wrapped up in a BIG AND DRAMATIC way and it happened so quickly that I almost felt like I got whiplash, but having read all of Tarryn’s previous works, I think it was intentional. I will say I wish the resolution had been explained with a bit more care, but ultimately I still really loved this book and finished it in a day!

While I think this book will be a hit, it was a bit of a miss for me. I didn't find it as quick of a read as I anticipated and wasn't as eager to see "what happened" as I would like to be.
A solid effort, but not my favourite by this author.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC to read and review.

In Good Half Gone, Iris has spent her adult life trying to find proof of what happened to her twin sister years ago. As part of her plan, she accepts a job on a remote island that houses the “criminally insane.”

I loved the descriptions of the island. The author describes it with such detail that makes it easy to feel the creepiness someone would feel as soon as they step off the boat onto the island.

Overall, I struggled to get into this story. Throughout it, multiple characters abuse their positions of power. There is little character development which makes it hard to understand their decision making and choices. Most of the book felt unrealistic. There are pieces of the story that seemed to be missing information or transitions which made it difficult to follow.

Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade for providing this ARC.

Thank you to the publisher for my copy - all opinions are my own.

Oh man, did I want to love this book so much more than I did. On paper this has all the things I really love in a twisty thriller - missing twin, obsessive search for answers, atmospherically claustrophobic setting on an island in a prison for the criminally insane, morally ambiguous characters......all excellent elements for a suspenseful thriller. And I am a fan of Tarryn's work, so I know to expect the unexpected. But in this case, the unexpected was a little much, even for me.

Don't get me wrong there were some well done elements to this story. Unfortunately, there were also some plot holes the size of Russia in this story. Threads of the story that were weighted in the narrative with importance but then fizzle into nothingness. Twists that are not only wild, but absolutely not even remotely plausible. I got to the end of this one and I was just.....confused. Does it, in theory, all tie together with answers? Yes. Do any of the answers make much sense? Very much no.

This is a 2.5, maybe a soft 3 star for me, because I was admittedly entertained right through to the last third where the really wild left turns started hitting hard and fast. I just wish this story had done more with the believable elements of the mystery because there was some fantastic potential here.

One to read if you are willing to go in for the entertainment alone.
