Ten years ago, her twin sister was kidnapped from right beside her. Now, Iris Walsh is on a mission to confront the man whom she feels was responsible. She has put herself through school while living with her grandmother and son, and is on her way to Shoal Island, where she will be working with the criminally insane. While her credentials are legit, nothing about Iris' motives is, and when she starts flirting with her boss, her position becomes even more tenuous. All roads seem to lead nowhere, however, and it starts to look like everything for which she's worked was for nothing. After a bit of a long slog, things reach a crisis point from which Iris, her coworkers, and the patients may not emerge.
The premise of this book is absolutely consuming. The execution stinks. There is nothing likeable about Iris, and her decision-making skills are so questionable as to be ridiculous. The outcome is completely implausible, although at least that part was interesting. The moodiness that one would expect from the remote island insane asylum never develops, and neither do any of the relationships between Iris and the other characters. Good Half Gone was not a win for me.
I gave Good Half Gone 4 stars.
Tarryn Fisher writes about a twin who's life mission becomes revenge on whom she believes killed her twin sister. In her mission, she ends up accepting an internship at Shoal Island, a mental hospital which is isolated on an island.
The first section of the book is predictable, and gives the reader a sense of what the twin went through when her twin went missing.
It's one of those books that I thought I had figured out, but the last section was a big twist that I didn't expect to see coming.
I had really high hope for this book because I've really liked Fisher's previous works, but unfortunately it fell short for me. Parts of it felt disjointed and there wasn't much tension until the very end. The surprises weren't very surprising and I feel like with just a few difference it could have really been great.
This book was AMAZING! The ending…….WOW! I haven’t read any of this author’s books before but I will definitely be reading more of hers now! This book for me was 5 stars and had me on the edge of my seat at times. I don’t read a lot of thrillers but this author just changed that. I have recommended this book to several friends already! Can’t wait to read more by this author!
@netgalley thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC! @tarrynfisher has done it again….she twists together suspense like few can! I thought I had the antagonist figured out but as always Tarryn messes with my mind!! Such an exciting read…. AND the setting of the PNW/Seattle area was the icing on the cake for me!!
Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish reading this book because the formatting of the ARC on the Netgalley app made it look super zoomed out and impossible to read. Font was way too small.
Piper and Ivy are twins and like most twins I know (myself included) they are nothing alike. Ivy spends years of her life trying to solve her sister's disappearance. I would have liked to get more background story on the characters, as Grandma sounds like she lead a very interesting life...she may need her own story. The lead up to the climax and conclusion kept my attention then the twist came. Having worked in a correctional setting, it would be hard if not impossible to pull this off. It was hard to keep track of all the characters, especially since several used nicknames and real names interchangeably. Even though the ending was not believable it was still satisfying.
Where do I begin? I am left breathless! This was a very fast paced read. I was literally on the edge of my seat from the very beginning.
Iris and Piper are 15 year old twins when Piper is taken from a movie theatre and driven away by strangers. The police think she is a run away and take their time looking for leads. Years go by without answers and Iris will not give up until she has those answers.
Iris is a loving mother to her 8 year old son and a loving granddaughter to her "gran" who raised both her and Piper. Iris has worked very hard at continuing her education in order to search and follow leads of her own. Her search which lands her to an internship at Shoal Island Hospital; a hospital for the criminally insane.
This is a 5 star read for sure! Such incredible writing and the characters were so real. Highly recommend!!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing/Graydon House for allowing me to read this incredible book.
Iris had never given up on trying to find out what happened to her twin sister Piper after the day she was abducted from a movie theatre. Iris is willing to do anything to find her, even take a dangerous and scary job at Shoal Island Hospital for the criminally insane where she thinks she will find her sisters killer. Believe it or not this is the “boring” part of the story! The last quarter of the book is so wild and has so many plot twists your head will be spinning. A great read!
Iris is still recovering from her sister, Piper, going missing years ago. After not being taken seriously, her captors escape unpunished. But Iris has a plan and has tracked down who she believes to be her sister’s murderer. Going into an internship program at the mental health facility where he resides, Iris is on a mission to get answers and justice.
This was a unique thriller that I enjoyed as a break from the typical storyline. Themes of family, psychological trauma and private island prison.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an interesting read, but I was disappointed that I figured out the plot (mostly) pretty early on and the parts I didn’t figure out were quite fantastical. Even so (spoiler alert), I enjoyed the main character and the exploitation plot line, even if it didn’t amount to much at the end. I would have enjoyed the story more had it followed the sex trafficking theme rather than the hospital theme. The writer is a talented writer- I just wasn’t happy where the plot went.
Thank you NetGalley for a ARC.
Good Half Gone had a bit of a slow start for me but the twists and action packed ending made up for it for me. I ended up really enjoying these characters and found myself worried about what happened to them after the last page, which is always a good sign for me.
My only complaint is that the pacing between the first half and second half of the book seemed vastly different, and at a certain point the past chapters seemed repetitive.
I was super excited for this book - the premise sounded amazing, but whew, I was veerrryy disappointed. I was expecting a super twisty story full of dark secrets with a hint of eerie/creepy isolated island vibes. The beginning was promising and then we are taken down a distracting road of side plots and characters that in the end really end up meaning nothing to the actual story. I found the ending to be super unrealistic and not put together very well, tbh. Everything just seemed to go off the rails towards the halfway point. The final reveal honestly kind of made me a bit mad with how bad it was.
I’m sad I didn’t enjoy this one, but I’m so thankful to NetGalley for this ARC!
I wanted to love this book but unfortunately found it to be pretty lackluster until the end. A lot of missed potential!
Fast paced and interesting story of a kidnapping and the person left behind. Highly recommend the story as you reveal what happens along with the main character. A fast paced story that takes you along for the ride
Tarryn Fisher is a master manipulator of words. She will give you a taste of one thing and then whip it in a whole other direction at the last minute to twist you all up and she does it with an easy finesse.
Good Half Gone is Fisher's latest thriller that follows Iris, the one twin that is left after her sister Piper was kidnapped right in front of her when they were teenagers. Right in broad day light. And since it all seemed so easy, no one believes that Piper was kidnapped and thinks she just ran away. Because that's what teenagers do. Feeling like she lost one half of herself, Iris has never gotten over that time and is on the hunt to find the truth of what happened to her twin.
Now, years later Iris still lives with her eccentric grandmother who's health is diminishing while raising her young son Calvin. She is about to embark on an internship at Shoal Island Hospital where she thinks some of her answers to her twin's disappearance may lie.
As I said above, Fisher knows how to throw a twist or two our way. I'm a fan of twin stories when it comes to thrillers and I loved the way that that aspect was used for this story. Iris was a smart woman looking for answers to something she never got years ago. As the story unfolds, we see there is much more to these twin's lives than what we originally thought and how connected they still seem to be. The whole island Hospital/jail was freaky AF and definitely proved to be it's own character in the story as well.
If you enjoy fast past thrillers, with past/present storylines that span about a decade, Good Half Gone is worth checking out. I liked the way the story was laid out as such so we could understand how Piper went missing and how her story really played out. There were a few character inconsistencies (at least in the ARC) that originally bugged me, but I let them slide because I was too invested in Iris's life at the island hospital. I wish we had more time with her son and grandmother, but the story and it's answers were on that island. Of course there's a twist at the end. Did I see it coming? Not exactly how it played out, but I saw something and liked the whole action packed ending that brought it all together in one explosive conclusion.
This book was all over the place. A lot of extra plot and it was slow. Ending was a little much. 3 stars for me.
Iris Walsh saw her twin sister, Piper, get kidnapped—so why does no one believe her?
This was a solid mystery with interesting plot twists.
Dual timelines usually don't float my boat, but this story had me hooked on both ends. In the past, Iris and her kick-butt grandma pull out all the stops to find Piper, while in the present, Iris is on a truth-seeking mission with no holds barred. Iris herself is a force to be reckoned with, her determination sending shivers down the spine. The family dynamics, especially with her grandma and son Cal, add heart to the suspense.
The book had me glued from start to finish with its suspenseful grip, set against the eerie backdrop of a mental hospital filled with unique characters. Though the ending hit the right notes, there were a few twists in the major reveal that left me craving a bit more. Despite that, the engaging characters and the thrill-packed plot make this a must-read for anyone seeking a fun, chilling adventure.
I must say the characters in this book are very well written. There are parts of this book I enjoyed, but I was left a little disappointed. Overall I did enjoy this story, just in my opinion I was expecting more.
