This was a FAST paced read for me. I literally did not want to put it down. The synopsis will grab you so fast! This one had me questioning what I thought I knew and wondering about the decisions the MC was making.
Irish Walsh a 15 year old at the mall sees her twin sister, Piper, get kidnapped in the front of the movie theater. She tells the police everything, down to the detail of the white van, but no one believes her.
Fast forward a decade later, now Iris an adult is obsessed with finding out what happened to Piper. Knowing there must be answers here, she takes an internship at an isolated hospital for the criminally insane. Whether it's justice or revenge, Iris doesn't plan on anything or anyone stopping her.
This one will have you in a rollercoaster of emotions, with a shocking (almost unbelievable) twist.
Another great book by Tarryn when you think you know something she throws in a twist if you love psychology thrillers you will love this
This will hook you fast and leave you needing to know what’s going to happen! The main setting is a facility for the criminally insane located on an island. Iris is navigating life years after her twin sister went missing and is assumed dead. She takes on an internship at the facility where she believes the man responsible is located because she needs answers.
The first 70%ish percent of the book is on the slower side. This part of the story is told using dual timeline. In one perspective we go back to when Iris and Piper were 15 and learn what happened leading up to Piper’s disappearance. Then we have present day where we see how and what Iris is doing now. I found myself devouring this book despite the slower pacing because I NEEDED to know what was going to happen. But then it happened…
The last 30% will require complete suspension of disbelief, which is not my jam unfortunately. I felt like there were so many ways this story could have gone that would have been more realistic and more satisfying. We were given such a full look at the past for the first 70% of the book and then that perspective just drops off. We do get a conclusion and closure in the story of Piper, but it could have been more fully fleshed out.
Overall I did enjoy this book. It was a bingeable story that hooked me in fast. If you are a fan of conclusions that require suspension of disbelief, you are in for a ride with this one!
Twins Iris and Piper are at the movies meeting a group of boys. When Iris returns from the bathroom, Piper is missing she reports to police, but they don’t believe her and label her a runaway. Years later Iris is still determined to find Piper and/or what happened that day. She believes her answers are at Shoal Island Hospital and so she applies for an internship. I enjoyed reading the first half with the dual timelines, not so much the latter half. Thanks to Harlequin Trade Publication and NetGalley.
Good Half Gone by Tarryn Fisher is a thriller novel. The story in Good Half Gone is one that is told by alternating between a past and present timeline but only has one point of view from it’s main character.
As teenagers Iris and her twin sister Piper had gone out to meet some boys/men that Piper had wanted to see. Things do not go well that day when Iris witnesses her sister being taken by the men but when going for help no one believes a kidnapping took place with the police chalking it up to Piper running away.
Now almost a decade later Iris is grown and raising a child of her own with a help from her grandmother, the only other person who believed Piper was taken that day. Iris has spent years studying to be able to take an internship at Shoal Island Hospital for the criminally insane where she believes she’ll finally find the answers to what happened to Piper.
Good Half Gone is actually the second novel I’ve read by Tarryn Fisher and one that I took a leap of faith before reading since I enjoyed the first. You see, I’m not a huge fan of remote creepy hospital/asylum type settings but I was really curious so I took the chance. Thankfully what I found in this one was the same compelling suspenseful story that drew me in and kept the pages turning that I remembered with the first book. I will say though that if you are opposed to kind of over the top endings where one may have to suspend belief this may not be for you but I ended up enjoying this one more than I was worried I would.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Thank you to Harlequin Trade Publications/Graydon House, NetGalley, and Tarryn Fisher for the opportunity to review this book for an honest opinion. The heroine Iris as spent the past several years looking for her twin sister who was kidnapped. She finally thinks that the man responsible, a former youth pastor, is on an island mental institution, is within her grasp and so she has gotten assigned an internship to work there for her degree. With luck and perserverence she will find a chance to get the answers to what happened to her sister.
However, how much do you really ever know the people you are in close contact with on an isolated island? Do you ever really trust them? Or rather Should you trust them? Iris is faced with these questions and more the longer she stays on the island. Sometimes knowing the truth is a dangerous thing.
I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more by this author.
I feel like I didn’t just read this book, I lived it along with Iris. Shock, happiness, confusion, elation, hope, despair, understanding; I felt everything. Honestly, right now, I just want to go read it again!
I love a fast-paced, easy-to-read thriller. That’s what I got. Iris witnessed her twin sister being kidnapped when she was young and she’s spent her life raising her son, caring for her grandmother, and looking for answers. She’s found her answers but now needs proof and takes an internship at the isolated Shoal Island Hospital.
The suspense started from the beginning and I was instantly captivated and found myself coming up with theories. As I read there were things I questioned, these may have felt like plot holes, but as the story (with flashbacks to the past) moves forward pieces come together with a twist I didn’t expect.
Although I figured out the biggest twist about halfway through, it remained an enjoyable, suspenseful, and atmospheric thriller.
This is my first read of a Tarryn Fisher novel, and perhaps it was not the best one for me to choose. As a girl, Iris witnessed her twin sister, Piper, being kidnapped. the detectives assigned to the case do not take Iris Seriously, despite her being able to provide a detailed account, No answers ever came for Iris and her caretaker grandmother. Years later, Iris believes that she has a lead on who may have taken her sister, He has been sentenced to an institution for the criminally insane, Iris takes an internship there in order to get closer. She may finally know if Piper is still alive and what exactly happened to her. As with anyone with such questions, the answers may be harder to live with than the questions.
There are moments of great writing in the book and the story has great potential. I think there were a few necessary diversions taken along the way. I am not sure if this was to try to appeal with more readers or perhaps to reveal more about Iris, but it weighed things down a bit for me,
Having said this, I do want to read another offering from Tarryn Fisher as I do believe there is a lot of talent here.
My Thanks to NetGalley and Grayden House books for the ARC of this book in exchange fro my honest review,.
I’m a fan of Tarryn Fisher’s books so I was so happy to receive an advance copy of this book. Thank you so much Harlequin Trade Publishing for my gifted copy!

Iris has a twin, Piper. When they were teenagers, Piper was kidnapped but authorities do not believe her. They refuse to investigate further due to the lack of evidence and the case turns cold. Years later, she continues to find proof by interning at a psychiatric hospital where she is hoping to find answers.
𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. The suspenseful epilogue instantly hooked me, and I love it when a book starts out so strong. I went into it blind and the mystery captivated me right away, which made me really invested in seeking the truth about Piper’s disappearance. With jumping timelines, it weaves the occurrences for a big reveal at the end which I truly enjoyed. It was a bit of a slow process to get there and I liked the past more than the present since the present seemed to be a bit repetitive until it finally unveiled the twist. I managed to predict it and I suspected the unreliable character early on, but i thought it was a fun ride. What a dark, and twisty thriller that Tarryn Fisher never fails to exude in all the ones I’ve read from her and I highly recommend them!

I think Taryn Fisher and I don't mix. I've read one other book by her besides this one and it also didn't work for me. I think this was a basic mystery that ultimately bored me. I got a little confused with the timeline and some plot points. I didn't get connected to the characters, which isn't always necessary in mystery/thrillers, but I found myself just completely apathetic towards the story. I think this author works for a lot of people just not me.
This book starts out with a bang with one twin reporting that her sister has been abducted. Only no one believes her. It's a difficult situation, one that Iris, the remaining sister will never forget. She focuses her life on revenge and finding out what happened to her sister Piper. Iris does know a few things about what may have happened to her sister, and she is determined to uncover the details -- a move that lands her on a internship in the Shoal Island Hospital for the criminally insane.
As with murder mysteries and thrillers, I don't want to get into details because I don't want to spoil all the fun of reading this engaging story. I was hooked right from the start -- and just as interested as Iris to find out what happened to Piper. Was it an abduction? Or something else? And what about Piper's son who just happens to find his way to Iris? What is going on here? There's plenty at the start of this to get you invested in reading more. The story is told in dual timeline of past and present so that fills in a lot of the blanks.
The middle of this was a little flat and slow, but the ending makes up for that with the last quarter of the book really picking things up to a great pace and providing the twists and turns and reveals that make for great suspense. Iris also gets into a romantic encounter with one of the doctors at the hospital and that threatens her plan to find out just what happened to her sister. I have mixed feelings about this romantic bit in here, because it seemed a bit out of place for Iris to fall into feelings while she is so focused on finally finding out what happened to her sister.
The ending picks up the pace and delivers while feeling a bit rushed. There are some "what just happened there?" moments. There's a great atmosphere here as things wrap up. Overall, I liked how Iris's relationship which was a bit love/hate with her sister drove her in so many ways. Be sure to keep reading to the end to find out the truth which did seem a bit out there for me, but what I really liked Iris in this and wanted her to get the closure she needed.
Gone Half Gone by Tarryn Fisher is a thrilling mystery about twins sisters Iris and Piper. When they are out one evening everything changes when Piper is taken. Iris told the detectives everything she saw, but no one believed her. Now years later, Iris is determined to find out what happened all those years ago. Now Iris is heading to a hospital on an island to try and get answers. But what will she find? What we get is twist and turns we do not see coming that had me turning to the pages to find out how it would all end and it had me at the edge of my seat.
Happy reading!
Good Half Gone is a suspenseful thriller that I couldn't put down. The story follows Iris Walsh who is trying to find out what happened to her twin sister years earlier when she went missing. The story jumps back and forth between now and then, slowly unraveling Iris's current journey as she seeks to reveal the truth, and her past experience after her sister's disappearance. The twists and turns kept coming right until the very end of the novel.
I would highly recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
Five stars for this un-put-down-able thriller! A fantastic read as usual by Tarryn Fisher. My favorite kinds of books are those that keep me up at night, turning the pages to find out what happens - Good Half Gone is exactly that.
I thought the first half of the book started out so strong! I was so curious to know what happened to Piper and I loved the past and present alternating views. However, the story felt like it dragged for a book that’s under 300 pages and the ending took a turn I didn’t necessarily care for. I loved The Wives by this author so I’m looking forward to trying something else by her in the future. Thank you The Hive and NetGalley for the ARC!
In "Good Half Gone" by Tarryn Fisher, readers are taken on a thrilling and emotionally charged journey with Iris, a woman haunted by the disappearance of her twin sister, Piper. Fisher crafts a narrative that is both suspenseful and deeply introspective, blending elements of mystery, psychological thriller, and family drama into a compelling story that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.
From the very beginning, Fisher hooks readers with the harrowing tale of Piper's abduction and Iris's relentless quest for answers. Iris grapples with survivor's guilt and the overwhelming desire to uncover the truth about what happened to her sister. Fisher does an excellent job of portraying Iris's inner turmoil, drawing readers into her world and making them feel every twist and turn of her journey. The setting of the isolated psychiatric hospital on Shoal Island adds an additional layer of tension to the narrative, as Iris delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding Piper's disappearance.
The ending brings some surprising twists and turns but you are finally given answers as to what happened to Piper. Overall, "Good Half Gone" is a riveting psychological thriller that will appeal to fans of the genre.
I would like to thank #NetGalley and #Harlequin Trade Publishing/Graydon House for sharing this digital advanced reader copy with me in exchange for my honest review.
This book has a promising start, with 15 year old Iris Walsh calling 911 to report her twin sister Piper's, kidnapping from a movie theater by suspected human traffickers and the police not believing her. Eight plus years later Iris is on a mission to find something out about her sister by taking a job at an isolated hospital for the criminally insane. The story alternates between these two time frames and after the promising premise and beginning pacing is bad and the rest of the book doesn't really go anywhere until things blow up at the end. The revelations about everything that happens after Piper disappeared, the situation at the "hospital," and all the characters actions, both the good guys and the bad guys, are absurd and unbelievable, in a bad way, and just when I thought it couldn't get worse it would. The writing was ok and what initially looked like the premise were ok but it felt like the author wasn't able to finish that plot and took it in an unbelievable direction just to get the book done. I received a free digital ARC of this novel from the publisher.
I LOVED several of the author's other books, but couldn't stay with this one. What could have been an interesting premise fell flat and dragged on. Only the last 10% or so felt suspenseful, and I was disappointed by the "resolution." The love story seemed frivolous and the entire thing was kind of a miss for me.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Iris is haunted by her sister's disappearance as she struggles to raise a young son and attend graduate school. She devises a plan in which she works for a facility that she believes houses her sister's killer.
There are a lot of twists in the storyline.
