Another fantastic crime novel with DCI Lauren Pengelly her sergeant Matt and the rest of the team.
Women are going missing and there has to be a link they just need to find it. Lauren then makes a discovery leading them to someone who has a link to all the women. DC Jenna puts herself forward to go undercover but will the team get to her in time and the relationships within the team are changing with the help off Matt and maybe Lauren is becoming more in tune with them.
Brilliant read and can’t wait for the next case.
Thanks for NetGalley and Storm Publishing for offering ARC in exchange my honest review.
This book was thoroughly impressed. This gripping crime thriller had me hooked from the very first page and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. One of the things I loved most about this book was the well-developed and complex characters. The plot was well-crafted and kept me guessing until the very end. The author did a fantastic job of creating twists and turns that kept me hooked. Overall, it was an excellent read that I would highly recommend to fans of crime thrillers. Highly recommend.
3 women go missing from the town of St. Ives. Detectives Lauren Pengelly and Matt Price investigate the missing women’s disappearance and search for the missing link. They all seem to have been having affairs. Could a serial killer be targeting these women?
Thanks NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC that will be released January 19, 2024!
Good police procedural set in Cornwall🔍
The investigation and mystery of multiple disappearances of "bored" women in a short span of time definitely kept my interest and and I liked that it's not until far into the story that the link between the victims and a prime candidate as possible kidnapper and potential killer become clear. The investigating police officers are a fairly small team of six, so it was easy to follow their movements. Author Sally Rigby also gave each of the six clear personality quirks that made them distinct.
I did not particularly like Lauren, the DI leading the investigation. The best way I can describe her is brittle. She made her team uncomfortable (and me, too!). Her abrupt and abrasive style of leadership detracted from my enjoyment. Maybe Lauren has a sympathetic backstory from a previous book but it does not feature here.
I think this author has a ways to go. Her characters didn't really have the depth I had hoped for but the crime plot saved the story for me.
Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Three and a half stars.
This is the second book in a series, I haven't read the first one but this was easy to read as a standalone.
DI Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price lead a small team of detectives in St Ives, Cornwall. When one of the team asks if she can make some enquiries for a neighbour whose wife didn't come home from a trip to the shops, Lauren gives the go-ahead, there's nothing much going on. But shortly thereafter another woman goes missing, there are no obvious connections between them, but the second disappearance makes finding the first woman all the more urgent. Then a third woman goes missing. Could there be a serial killer in St Ives?
This was an interesting mystery. I thought the similarity between the women was quite obvious, but I didn't spot the link. Lauren was quite a prickly character ad in contrast Matt was a bit too perfect - always the voice of reason. Also some of the decisions made during the undercover operation were questionable.
Overall I enjoyed the story and would definitely read more in the series.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Storm Publishing, for letting me read and review an advanced copy of this book, ‘The Hidden Graves of St. Ives’.
DI Lauren Pangelly is fairly new in her position and is still having a problem connecting to her team, except with her DS, Matt Price. Her style of leadership does not endear her to the other 4 members. While being distracted by her sick dog, which she has taken to the vet, one of the team is contacted about a missing woman. When more women go missing, the team faces a crisis while trying to find any clues or links.
This was your typical British mystery, with the police team trying to find any suspects, but I found it just a bit too simple with the storyline, for me.
Well-written book with a good plot, and I love the characters! That is the book reviewed in one sentence, but there is so much more to it. I love to read about the tension within the team and how Matt is operating between the boss and the team. It is also adorable how important the dog is in the book. Can't wait for the next book in this wonderful series!
Three women go missing in a short time space in a small community in Cornwall- seemingly unrelated in any way the police struggle to find a link that might help them find the women.
The book is heavy on police procedure and focusses in on the working relationships of the DI and her newest team member and partner, Matt on several occasions. I would have liked a little more about the disappearance if each woman to really set the scene and allow my armchair detective to try and solve the case but it is still an excellent read.
I enjoyed “The Lost Girls of Penzance”, the first book in the Cornwall Murder Mystery series, and was excited to see another addition. Unfortunately, while I found this story interesting the tone was overly strident, too top heavy with police procedure and the DI’s inner thoughts of how things had to be done, just something constantly off-putting. There was too much attention and reference to DI Pengelly’s personality traits and how it impacted her team, almost as if this was a character study and only secondarily a murder investigation. When the attention shifted to the disappearance of the women and the potential that they had been murdered the story came alive. Although I was disappointed, I would definitely try again if a third book in this series becomes available.
This is another time when half stars would be valuable as it is a definite 3-1/2 stars which I am rounding up to 4. Thanks to and Storm Publishing and NetGalley for an advance copy.
What a great mystery to read. It has you guessing from the get go. Three women disappear and the police team are stumped to find a connection linking the three. This book is one you can’t put down from start to finish and has you on the edge of your seat in places. Can’t wait to read the next book by Sally Rigby.
The second in this new series by Sally Rugby, this book continues the crime solving team in the Penzance police. Lauren and Matt lead their team on the trail of three missing women who all disappear within a short time. I would consider this a very well written police procedural, and anyone interested in this type of crime novel will thoroughly enjoy the methods and workings of a murder squad. The main characters are still forming but Matt, who approaches a case with calm and humour is a great foil for his boss Lauren. The rest of the team are more fully developed and we learn a bit more about them as people. I am looking forward to her next book and expect to find another well crafted mystery with plenty more interaction within the team. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of The Hidden Graves of St. Ives. I heartily recommend this series, they can be read as a stand alone but I would begin with book 1 in the series.
Thankyou NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read The Hidden Graves of St.I ves. I am a big fan of Sally Rigby and have read most of them.
The Hidden Graves of St. Ives is a Cornwall Murder Mystery. It is a police procedural novel, set in Penzance and features Detective Inspector Lauren Pengelly.
The plot is about the disappearance of three missing women. On investigation, it comes to light that these women, live in the town of St. Ives and are unhappy in their respective marriages.
The police are concerned about the possibility of a serial killer. They look into their backgrounds and find a common factor.
What I liked – The investigative approach of DI Lauren Pengelly and her team is very clear. I found the plot very tight and flowing. I also loved how Lauren’s character developed. It was exciting to follow Lauren and the team as they worked through the case.
What I did not like - I would have like to know more about Penzance.
It was gripping and I was unable to put down the book. The pace is good and the characters are exciting.
This is the second in the Cornwall Murder Mystery Series and I look forward to more of them.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
This is a solid police procedural. Detective Lauren Pengelly, Sargeant Matt Price and their team are investigating the disappearances of women happening in St. Ives. I enjoyed following the team along as the hunted and researched the case, trying to find what the connection was. I thought I had some things figured out, then I didn’t!
I really liked the characters Matt Price, Jenna, and the rest of the team. However, it was hard for me to connect with Lauren, the main character. She was very restrained- and sometimes harsh to the team. There was really no info given on her back story. I liked when you got to glimpse the softer side of her when she was with her dogs. I realize now that this is the second in the series, so I plan to get the first and see if there is more info about her.
Overall I would recommend this book if you like solid police procedural, and witnessing the beginning of an investigative teams bonding. I would suggest to read the first in the series before this one!
really enjoy this series. This one doesn't have as much suspense as the first book, but has plenty. I enjoy getting to know these characters and one reason I really enjoy series. I didn't get the description of Tia and Ben, so had a harder time picturing them. I thought the story was great, the evil protagonist was sick, and loved the relationship between Matt and Lauren. Looking forward to the next book! Highly recommend this series.
A fast moving police procedural set in Cornwall, very atmospheric and enjoyable. DI Lauren Pengelly is a by the book type of officer, almost afraid to show anything of her own life to colleagues, meaning she comes across as strait laced and humourless. This is a real shame as she does have a soft side, especially where her 2 dogs are concerned. DS Matt Price is the perfect foil for her, as well as being a bit of an expert in serial killers, in comparison to his team, but with his own back story, that of becoming a widower with a young daughter fairly recently. The case is complex, fast moving and lacking in leads and the ending is handled really well. I look forward to the next in the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is the second book in this series set in Cornwall. A steady paced police procedural that had me gripped from the first page. A great mix of characters with a few twists make for a great storyline. Although book 2 in the series it can easily be read as a standalone. I would recommend reading the first book though as they are both so good. Can’t wait for the next book. I highly recommend this book and author
In the quaint town of St Ives, the disappearance of Freya Kempston sets off a intricate web of deceit and mystery. Detective Lauren Pengelly and her team must unravel the enigma, navigating a tangled trail of clues and red herrings. As the investigation unfolds, the eerie similarity to a second disappearance raises the stakes, ensnaring the reader in a thrilling game of cat and mouse. With each twist, the tale masterfully tightens its grip, keeping you to hold your breath 😵💫
The characters were multi-dimensional and complex, and the story tackled some heavy themes with sensitivity and nuance. The writing was engaging and kept me on the edge of my seat. I gave it 5 stars and can't wait to read more from this author!
This book started with a missing woman, but then everything escalated. One of the team was put in danger. There were so many twists I didn't see the end coming. The characters were well written and the team was easy to like. I have read another book in this series and I think this might even be better. Definitely worth a read.
The Hidden Graves of St Ives by Sally Rigby is book 2 in the Cornwall series featuring DI Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price. An interesting combination of characters. Lauren is very stand-offish and doesn’t mix with her team outside of work and holds herself aloof. Her team call her The Ice Queen. Matt is trying to round off the sharp edges so makes for some good interaction. What starts off as a low-key investigation into the disappearance of Jenna, a team member’s neighbour, who didn’t return home from work the night before, quickly turns into something much more complex. The investigation takes them in surprising and unanticipated directions. Being set in and around St Ives in Cornwall, it doesn’t have the frantic pace of some stories set in bigger cities, which makes for a nice change. It is an easy read, but you can feel the tension building towards the end. It was a very enjoyable and satisfying read.
A quick read with just enough murder/mystery to keep me interested. Could have done with a bit more about the area but other than that a decent story line. My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
