I've read a lot of WWII fiction, so my standards for this sub genre have climbed even higher. The Midwife's Promise stands out as a phenomenal book, with a great narrator -- which can make or break an audiobook. I highly recommend this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this exciting and touching WW2 story. I think Frederick did a great job of narrating and will look out by stories written by Graham and other stories narrated by Frederick in the future. Reviews will be left on my Instagram and in my reading group on Facebook.

“The Midwife’s Promise” is a riveting tale filled with hope, strength, fear, the will to survive, uncertainty, trust, loss, new life, and rebirth with the enduring power of love and faith in humanity skillfully woven throughout. This story will give you all the feels as you ache and fear and hurt and love alongside the characters as they navigate the complicated world of war-torn France, a time “of secrets guarded very carefully,” and, as Sophie, the main character states, “Nothing had changed. But everything was different.” I have a lot to say about this novel, but alas this will inevitably result in spoilers, so trust me when I say that this is a beautiful story of a midwife’s survival and all she endured in the second World War. It’s a story of family and found family. Of friendships and love. Of helping others and finding connections when all seems lost.

I am so glad that i browsed the titles on netgalley back in December (an occupational hazard) and requested this title as soon as I saw this stunning cover and read the synopsis. The audiobook was narrated by the talented Naomi Frederick who brought the story to life. I will be looking for other titles she has narrated.

I read the last 80% of “The Midwife’s Promise” over two days and cannot get this story out of my head. Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscapes Select, and Storm Publishing for this audiobook (my first audiobook on #netgalley. I will definitely be reading more of Eliza Graham’s books.

I couldn’t find it in me to finish this book, the plot seemed interesting and usually I am so immersed in this kind of plot. However, I don’t do so great with audio books. The writing did catch my attention multiple times but it is so hard for me to focus on the details when the book is being read to me and I am not reading it myself. However, even though I wasn’t able to finish it, I believe the voice match was perfect for this storyline, and the writing was incredible, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have if I had read it instead of listened

A beautifully written and heartwrenching WWII story. Written in flashback fashion but easy to follow the storyline. I loved the characters and the story they told. A must read!

This is a dual-timeline novels that takes place in 1992 New England and 1942 France.

Sophie, the midwife, goes to France to be with her daughter who is pregnant. She vows to take care of her child and grandchild, in the war ridden France of WW2.

I love reading dual-timelines, and this one did not disappoint. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Many thanks to Net Galley and Dreamscape Select for an audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a beautifully written story of love and heartbreak that follows the life of Sophie, a midwife during WWII. The story opens in 1992 where the family is gathered to celebrate Sophie's 90th birthday. There is a dark cloud hanging over as she knows the time has come to tell her son, Paul the truth about Sophie's past and how that may affect Paul's life. This is a story of a strong woman doing everything she can to save the children and unborn children during the war, even if it does not follow all the rules. One day she is summoned by her daughter letting her know that she is expecting a child and is concerned that the doctors do not know what they are doing and so Sophie makes the dangerous trip under a false identity to be there to help her daughter and her first grandchild come into the world......Enjoy!!!

Thank you Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing for accepting my request to read and review The Midwife's Promise.

Narrator: Naomi Frederick

Stars: 4

Heartbreaking World War 2 historical fiction with the midwife role as the reason for the story. This is a side I have never thought about, but believe in some form it happened. I found the story as a whole interesting. There were ups and downs of slight confusion -- some due to writing and some due to my head space in all fairness. I did want to know how the story ended but not at the expense of rushing.

The ending bothered me in ways I can't say. I won't spoil. And, after some thinking I realized it was realistic, I just didn't like it.

I liked the narrator. I would choose a book on her name (should I remember it).
This was worth my time.

This was heartbreaking but enlightening to the times of WWII. This was my 1st book by Eliza Graham but will most certainly not be my last! I am adding all of her books to my TBR!

"The Midwife's Promise" is a remarkable historical novel written by Eliza Graham. It is a dual-timeline story set between 1942 and 1992. The novel revolves around a mother and daughter's life during World War II. Sophie Hansen, the protagonist, is a midwife, and the story tells us about her life during the German occupation of France. She not only helped bring children into this world but also helped them escape the Nazis and reach safety across the border. The story begins with Sophie's 90th birthday celebration, where she decides to finally disclose a secret that she has been keeping from her son since he was born. As she reflects on her life, she remembers the many difficult choices she had to make in order to survive, which left her heartbroken and changed the course of her life. Although the book was a bit slow-paced at times, it still managed to hold my interest. The characters' heartbreaking sacrifices and choices dramatically changed their lives forever.

The narrator brought the characters to life in this very moving story..

"The Midwife's Promise" is a heart-wrenching story that has shattered me. Sophie, the protagonist, has dedicated herself to helping Jewish women and children in need, but she couldn't save the people closest to her heart. As she reaches her 90th birthday, she decides to reveal her secret to the only person left in her life. Will he understand the difficult choices and sacrifices she had to make?

This novel is an incredible example of bravery and heroism in the face of adversity. The characters are truly remarkable, and the storyline is captivating. Despite the heartbreaking price they paid for survival, their courage and determination to stand up against the Nazis is genuinely inspiring. I was utterly engrossed in every sentence and word of this outstanding novel, and it left me with a deep respect for those who fought against such hatred and evil.

Thank you, NetGalley, for providing me with an advanced copy of the novel in exchange for my honest review.

This audiobook captured me right from the beginning. There is both suspense and relationship themes in this historical fiction novel. Set in WWII we find a midwife that puts the lives of Jewish children above all else, even her own daughter. I loved the twist (that I did see coming). I am so glad that I was able to obtain a review copy of this audiobook and will be recommending it to all.

Oh, this book just brought tears to my eyes. It is a very emotional read that is written in a dual timeline style.

On Sophia's 90th Birthday she is consumed with the memories of being a Midwife during WWII. She realizes it is finally time to tell her son Paul the secret that she's been carrying around all these years.

Unlike a lot of WWII books I've read, this book does not focus a whole lot on the concentration camps. It's more about sacrificing ones self to hide Jewish children from the Nazis.

This was a bittersweet book that I laughed and cried while reading. I definitely recommend reading this book.

I enjoyed this book, but I can’t say I loved it. If I hadn’t experienced this book as an audiobook, I’m not sure I would have had the patience to keep going.

Regarding the narration itself, this audiobook was very well done! The narrator’s voice and accent fit the characters perfectly. Told from both past and present timelines, I was a bit confused early on, but this was cleared up very quickly as I continued listening and the story continued to build.

Regarding the story itself, I found the plot to be a little dull at times and I found myself feeling bored at various points throughout. I wanted to feel more, to be more engaged in the characters and the story, but everything felt somewhat one dimensional for me. I didn’t find myself feeling overly attached to the characters or what happened to them, and overall was just left wanting more.

All of that being said, I would recommend this as an audiobook for someone who might be new to the WWII historical fiction genre, I just needed more.

I typically enjoy historical fiction that highlights the contributions of women to the war effort, especially since both my sister and daughter have served in the military.

This particular story followed a midwife named Sophie and her experience during WWII trying to get Jewish children in France to safety. But when she has to go into hiding or risk serious consequences, she finds ways to still make a difference behind the scenes. At least, she does until she receives a note from her newly married daughter asking her to come quickly.

In this dual-timeline story, Sophie is now celebrating her 90th birthday and aware that she doesn't have too much longer to live. Yet there are secrets she hasn't told that she now feels compelled to share. Secrets about what happened when she went to help her daughter deliver her twins, on a day that went terribly wrong.

Unfortunately, I found it hard to get into this story for some reason. It's not that it was badly written. (It wasn't.) And the narrator did a wonderful job handling all the different characters and moods. So perhaps it's just me. When I did listen, I enjoyed it. But I didn't feel that compelling urge to listen that I like from the books that I enjoy most. In reading other comments, it seems I'm in a minority feeling that way. But, there you go...

Thank you to Eliza Graham, Dreamscape Select, and NetGalley for an advance review copy.

An absolutely heart wrenching story about a midwife in WWII. Sophie in 1992 was preparing for her birthday. So many tears and emotions whilst reading this fantastic book. This book is definitely for you if you enjoy historical fiction. The narrator of this audiobook was also great & easy to listen to.

Sophie has secrets! So many secrets! She decides to reveal them all on her 90th birthday. It is all about the past and what happened during the war. Her daughter, her grandchildren were all in danger and it was all up to Sophie.

This novel reeled me in and did not let me go. I loved Camille and her quiet ways and Sophie with all her secrets. I will be honest, I was a little hesitant to forgive Sophie for missing Camille’s wedding. But as the story moves along, all is revealed. I can’t fathom going through what Sophie went through to help other people. And then she risks it all to be by Sophie’s side for her difficult pregnancy.

And of course this novel has a big twist at the end. So many secrets and so much heartache…You MUST read this to find out! You will not be sorry!

Need a novel about love and risk with a twist…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing, for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. This is narrated by Naomi Frederick who does a great job!

This is the story of Sophie, a midwife, who has lived through WWII occupied France and is present day, celebrating her 90th birthday. Told through alternating timelines, this is a gripping and emotional read of a resilient woman who dedicates her life to helping women deliver their babies. Camille, Sophie's daughter, was most protected by her mother despite Camille's feelings otherwise.

Told with heart-warming and heart-wrenching boldness, this is an excellent take on another life well lived in WWII.
