Christina Lauren never disappoints. Their characters (it’s two friends writing together) have a way of making you feel like you know them and always root for them. I was turned on to this author first with the ‘Beautiful’ series, and have yet to find a book by them I don’t like. Don’t just read this one, read every book they have written. You won’t be sorry!
This reimagining of Disney's Tangled is cute and quirky! I thought the kidnapping angle was handled well and that the romance managed to shine despite having a heavier topic in the background. The romance was a little too insta-love for my liking but I know many library customers who will love this one. 3.5 stars!
I could not have asked for a better combination here - a fairytale retelling of one of my favorite Disney movies AND it’s by one of my favorite authors?!? This was such a fun read! I found myself having to watch Tangled after I finished reading. So cute! Thank you Netgalley and Hyperion Avenue for the egalley in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed reading "Tangled Up In You" by Christina Lauren and had a hard time putting it down. Described as a modern reimagining of Tangled, this book was filled with everything a modern fairytale needs.
Ren is a simple girl, never having attended school or left her homestead, she sets out on an adventure - to attend college. When she first meets Fitz, she describes him as someone who could easily carry a newborn calf. These types of comparisons throughout the book depict Ren's simple upbringing. While Fitz puts on a good front at school, when they are alone he becomes softer, more caring and protective ... "You ok Sunshine?" Maybe he's not such a bad guy after all. The love story of Ren and Fitz takes them on a road trip of a lifetime. One that teaches Fitz the valuable lesson of learning to slow down so you don't miss the details that make life's special moments so memorable.
I was able to easily connect to Ren's innocence and saw many similarities with the movie Tangled. I would say this is more a YA book, but very enjoyable for a quick read and a must read for any Disney lover.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for sending me an ARC of "Tangled Up In You" in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion.

I absolutely adored Tangled so I knew going into this story I was probably going to fall in love and I definitely did!
Ren was such a fun and lovable ‘Rapunzel’! She was quirky and charismatic, and quickly charmed everyone that met her. I adored how insanely smart she was, having taught herself her whole life.
Fitz was a multilayered MMC. He has a darker past that he is desperately trying to overcome. He didn’t want to let Ren derail his plans, but before he knew it, he was completely enthralled by her!
The forced proximity of the cross country road trip was perfect for building the sweetest slow burn! Ren is a very innocent heroine so I loved that the story was kept strictly PG.
There was a ton of giggle inducing scenes throughout the book. The bar scene was freaking perfect! I laughed through the whole chapter.
The mystery surrounding her parents and the plot twist at the end was great! I felt like the ending was a bit fast, and some things were left without a definite closure, but overall that didn’t take away from the story for me!

I love all of Christina Lauren's books - and this one was no exception. My only complaint is that it ended kind of suddenly and I didn't feel that the last little blurb gave enough closure to the story. I would've preferred there to be a couple page long epilogue to show where Edward and Ren were a few years after the events of the book. It just felt like I was left wanting more.
What can you say? If it isn't broke, don't fix it. This is a classic Christina Lauren story, though the first time that they've brought their style to the YA genre. Anyone who loves fairy tale retellings, HEA, and watching love unfurl will fall for this story too. But I admit that I miss the extra elements from their adult novels.
Tangled Up In You takes readers on a modern retelling of Disney's Tangled. Reader, meet Ren. She hasn't been off of her homestead during her life, doesn't know what it is like to have a cell phone, and trusts her "parents" completed. Now, meet Fitz. He is the guy who seems to have it all; however, he might have a more intricate back story than meets the eye. Through unforeseen circumstances, these two end up on a cross-country road trip leading to adventures they could not have predicted.
I typically stray away from re-telling stories. They have never been my jam, and I routinely find them boring. In spite of that, I decided to give this one a try because I have always enjoyed Christina Lauren novels. This story was no let down. I was hooked from the start. My Disney loving heart was captivated from the first chapter. I highly recommend any reader looking for some nostalgia with a modern twist give this one a try including any skeptics of re-telling stories like myself prior to this story.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this story.
HUGE Tangled and CL fan and this book filled my heart with so much warmth. I enjoyed how it was not 100% the same but I could still feel the nods to the movie!
Christina Lauren is the perfect author team to retell Tangled. Delightful to see familiar characters transported to a modern setting.
Ok ok ok, this isn't your regularly scheduled Christina Lauren programming, except that it kind of is? There is some adorable banter. And these two kids are cute, and hot for each other. BUT it's also a retelling of Tangled, and that is admittedly hard to do, and I am impressed that Christina Lauren did it. These two can do anything. Ren has lived a very very sheltered life on her homestead with her controlling parents Gloria and Steve. Ren is also a beautiful (of course) genius who has managed to leave the homestead for the first time to go away to college. Fitz is the charismatic, Austin Bulteresque student she meets when she first arrives on campus. Of course, her roommate tells her to not let Fitz into her pants, which is a setup for definitely wanting to let him into her pants. Then this totally wild story happens where Ren has to go on a secret mission to Atlanta (not gonna spoil that), and Fitz is headed to Nashville, so Ren blackmails into taking her along. At first, Fitz is extremely annoyed by Ren's innocence, but then he falls for her kindness. She is EARNEST, and it would get annoying, but again, this is Tangled re-told. Yada yada, one bed in a hotel, long talks in the car, steamy looks, and Ren and Fitz start to fall for each other. It took me a while to warm up to this book, but eventually, I was hooked. That's the Christina Lauren magic.
Thank you NetGalley for the digital ARC of this book in exchange for a truthful review.
So I adore almost everything Christina Lauren puts out, some of my all time favorite books are by them (The Unhoneymooners! The True Love Experiment! *swoons*), and Tangled is one of my favorite Disney movies, but Tangled Up in You honestly didn’t work for me. Ren has spent her whole life on her family’s homestead with her parents but has always dreamed of college and now that she’s there, it feels like life is just beginning; Fitz has a plan for his life that doesn’t include the vivacious, bubbly Ren—but when a class project uncovers old secrets, these two are thrown into a road trip that will change their lives forever. I had a hard time with Ren’s naiveness, and the lack of technology made sense but it made college feel confusing. There were pieces she felt adept at technology in ways that didn’t make sense and it was just a very different kind of character. She is all kinds of sunshine and it was a fun contrast of characters. Ren has such a beautiful heart and is so brave. The road trip was my favorite part, Ren and Fitz are so different but Ren opens Fitz up so beautifully and they just fall really easily together. Having both perspectives was really nice for this book too, because Fitz saw her I think a little how the reader did—all sunshine and happy but naive and too pure for the world. The banter is witty and sharp and fun, the romance is cute (not steamy). And it’s a solid adaption. I just had some trouble with it, and the ending felt abrupt, I wish there had been a little more. But characterization wise, it was well done and the romance was sweet overall.
4 Stars! Cute book! I didn’t really care for the male main character, Fitz, at first, but he grows on you. The female main character, Ren, I liked a lot and would love to be friends with a real life Ren. She was so sweet, it made me want to protect her from any bullies. This was an entertaining book but the ending was kind of abrupt. I did skim through some parts, they seemed to drag on a bit. No ‘sexy times’, which considering Ren comes off a bit child like, it fit the book. A few surprises, some I saw coming, some I didn’t. All in all it was an interesting book and I loved the HEA ending, even if it was abrupt. This wasn’t like anything I’ve read from Christina Lauren before and it wasn’t my favorite but it was still an enjoyable read.
*I received this book at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
This was such a fun, cute Tangled retelling. The parallels were so spot on and fun to spot. With a retelling, there is not much room for plot twists and big shocks, but CLo managed to make the story fresh and interesting.
If you go into this book expecting a typical romance, please keep in mind that this is published by Disney and is a retelling of a Disney movie. It’s goofy, instalove, and PG rated.
Thank you to Hyperion Avenue and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Such a cute book! I loved Ren and Fitz so much. They're one of my new favorite book couples. This story was so well-written, the characters were well-fleshed out, the storyline was great. It kept me invested throughout the story. Loved it!
* I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this book. All thoughts are my own.
I love the Meant to Be series and how you can understand how they tie into the movies but it isn’t overly obvious! I was looking forward to this one based on both the story choice and the author choice, but I was so shocked by the direction this story went; it was so much crazier than I imagined it would be. I thought Ren and Fitz were so fun together and how Ren is learning all of these things along their journey.
I would recommend this book and the others in the series!
I love the Meant To Be Series.
Fairy tale retellings are my favorite especially modernized.
Christina Lauren did this one great justice.
Ren and Fitz are great lead characters and have dynamic chemistry.
Christina Lauren wrote true to their style but also fit in this series beautifully.
Aggressively adorable. If anyone knows how to tell an irresistible story, it’s Christina Lauren. They did a brilliant job taking an already perfect Disney favorite and really making it fresh. I was at the edge of my seat, seeing how everything would turn out. Of course, they make you fall for Ren and Fitz and you only want the best for them. While also keeping the classic beats you’d expect from the Disney movie. A++. Have already highly recommended it to several friends and will continue to do so.
Full disclosure- I typically love these authors and always expect I’ll love their books. There has been just 1 I give a pass to, so their record for me is great. Recommended almost daily to customers. This was…ok. Not bad. But not their usual. Not sure if it’s because it was following a theme of tangled or whag happened but it just wasn’t a let me devour it in one sitting book. But it was ok and I think young adults will like it more than middle age
Book Review
Tangled up in You by Christina Lauren
Tropes, Triggers and Thoughts
✅ Rapunzel/Disney Tangled retelling
🗺️Location : off grid farm , College campus and a road trip cross country
✅ Road trip- means snacks, playlists and gas station shenanigans (some of my favourite things)
✅ Forced proximity/one bed- well, if there is only one hotel room and you are on a budget…..
✅ Juvenille detention/ adoption/foster care system
✅🎆 Fireworks as flowers- I have this embedded in my brain now and I wont ever see fireworks the same again
✅ Loved the 90s movie references to Clueless and Goonies
Main Characters
Ren- she’s a virgin in soo many ways, so many firsts to be experienced, her life has been sheltered
Fitz- a man with a plan, he is not a fan of the distraction Ren presents but …… he cant help himself…
Overall
Really trying not to include any spoilers- but you know how Fairy tales traditionally have darker roots… they are meant to be cautionary tales to children to keep them safe. This is most definitely not just a romance…. The authors tease an underlying shadow throughout the narrative and when the reader pulls at that thread they discover something sinister hiding in plain sight. Expect more Grimms Fairy tale and less Disney in the best way !!
