I am a lover of all the Christina Lauren books and this one was no exception. It’s sweet and innocent and a little different than her usual romcom, but I loved it! I would definitely recommend and will be thinking about it for days!
I absolutely loved this book! Tangled is already one of my favorite movies and I was obsessed with this retelling! I really enjoyed how it was a retelling but also held its own story line! And when elements of the original story line was being played out it was done in a more modern/real life way! Ren became one of my favorite book characters quickly! Was a quick read and made me laugh. Definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a fun and cute read!
What a delightful spin on Tangled - it was so easy to imagine the characters and I loved the nods to quintessential parts of the movie (frying pan anyone?). Definitely what I've come to expect from CLo with a sweet Disney twist.
Thanks to the author, netgalley, and publisher for the eARC in exchange for my review.
This was an interesting spin on Tangled! I love Christina Lauren and their writing and swoony lines won me over since Tangled isn't a movie that makes a ton of sense to me. I'm pleased with how this ended.
I am a Disney girl through and through and when I saw that Christina and Lauren were writing a book based on one of my favorite Disney films, I was so excited! I love both the Grimms fairy tale Rapunzel and Disney film Tangled so I am very familiar with the story, but hadn’t read a contemporary retelling of it before.
I want to first say, I think with the lack of magic as well as being set in modern times, this story feels more suspenseful and dark than I originally thought, something to keep in mind.
I had to read this book in one sitting due to the worry it was causing me. (so you know it was good writing!)
The twists and turns kept me engaged the entire time as well as on the edge of my seat!
I absolutely loved the main characters,
I think they were written very well!
Ren is such a sweet character, very much like Rapunzel in the sense of being sweet and innocent but she also is so smart and fun!
Fitz was such a good fit for the “Flynn Ryder” character.
This book is the most perfect book for bookish Disney fans who enjoy shows like Psych!!
I highly highly recommend!
Thank you to Hyperion Avenue Books and Net Galley for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review!
I went into this unsure of how I would feel. I have not read any of the others from the Meant to Be Series before. I love Christina Lauren and I adored Tangled but was not sure how those two things combined. I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. This felt more YA then anything but it also had a dark undercurrent. Ren's back story was really dark when you think of how she grew up. The love between her and Edward was very sweet. Overall it was a fun read.
What a charming and fun twist and reimagination to the fairly tale of Disney's Tangled!
Tangled is my absolute favourite Disney film of all time so to say I had high expectations is understandable and Christina Lauren did a great job turning it into a contemporary modern fairy tale. While it was not all perfect it was fun, witty and very Disney-esque.
With most of Christina Lauren's books I have a fun time. The writing is entertaining, easy and flows nicely. The pacing was well done, giving it a fast enough pace while also slowing it down for inner monologues. I wish those were kept shorter at times though, and more emphasis were put on dialogue as it felt too simple and short during some parts that could have been fleshed out more.
I am not a big fan of insta-love, but knowing this is based on Tangled made it less cringe and I actually did not mind it. The same with Ren's overly exciting and happy personality. It would have been strange and cringey had it not been based on Rapunzel, so it worked. The grumpy/sunshine trope was well done though, I enjoyed Ren and Fitz's dynamic immensely. Ren being the innocent/happy go lucky girl, having grown up in isolation and Fitz, the grump, who is out for revenge. Seeing his hard exterior slowly melt and giving way to a little softie was lovely.
Ren represented Rapunzel and her quirkiness perfectly. I adored her character so much and seeing her slowly experience the world and what she missed out on all her life was fabulous. She was not too much but enough and she did speak what was on her mind all the time. All these quirks made made her very endearing and brilliant. I really liked seeing her slowly accept her feelings towards Fitz as well. It was so cute.
I am glad the romantic element was kept minimal and not too explicit. Giving this is based on a Disney film it would have been weird to read more explicit scenes. It did not take away from their chemistry and romantic relationship. it was quite wholesome to follow their romantic journey.
The ending was a wild ride, a while I wasn't at the edge of my seat, it was giving suspense. Unfortunately it was a little underwhelming for me, especially Fitz's role during the big show down. I wished he played more the role of the hero which got lost for me.
Overall this was fun, I loved Ren's characters and I warmed up to Fitz eventually. I loved the banter we got, however I wish we had gotten more. It was missing more dialogue between Ren and Fitz. I enjoyed this book and I recommend it for a fun little read, however it hasn't swept me off my feet and I can see how this isn't for everyone.
Thank you Hyperion Avenue and Netgalley for the ARC.
Omg I am OBSESSED with this book!!! I've told everyone who loves romcoms to preorder this because it is JUST THAT GOOD. Like, even if you weren't a Disney fan and knew nothing about Tangled, you would still absolutely adore this romance. It stands up on its own without relying too much on the source material, but as a Disney fan I was squealing every time I came across a nod to Tangled! 5 freaking, adorable, sweet, no holds barred stars!
We all love a good wholesome fairytale...
Ren only knows one way of life and that is off the grid. Way off the grid. Her strict parents want nothing to do with modern technology and they expect the same of Ren. So her days are spent doing chores around their homestead, where her best friends are the animals, and absorbing any and all information from the books she can get her hands on.
But everything is about to change. Her parents have given her permission to go to college! Finally at 22, she’ll get away from home and live in the real world. Of course her parents have rules. No internet or tv unless it’s for school work, she is to come back home every weekend, and no leaving the campus otherwise. Ren has no problem with that. She just wants to learn and then move back home.
When a school genealogy project gives her unexpected results, Ren has questions that she knows her parents won’t answer. All of the sudden she starts to wonder what else is out there, so she blackmails a classmate.
Fitz has other things to worry about than the annoying girl that won’t stop talking, like taking down is dad and making sure he’s at the top of his class. When that is jeopardized and he gets caught doing something he shouldn’t be doing, he has no chance but to give in the Ren’s request…. Take her with him to Nashville.
Little does he know that a cross country trip wouldn't have him fighting urges to leave this girl on the side of the road and instead have him protect her at all costs.. And little does Ren know that she's about to break every rule her parents gave her for a chance to see what is out there and to have a lifetime of firsts with the boy she was determined not to let charm her.
When they find out the truth behind Ren’s genealogy results, they are both thrown into a situation they never saw coming, leaving both of them to question what and who they want for their future.
This book is wholesome and sweet with very little spice. And even knowing the whole plot and plot twists because of the fairytale it’s based on I still read this in one day. Definitely recommend.
This book…young adult, I think…is just so utterly charming and heartwarming with some interesting dark undertones. It follows the Tangled script really closely but for me that was part of its appeal. Ren is a twenty three year old woman who leaves the isolation of her family’s homestead for the first time to attend college. One of the first people she meets is Fritz, who is deceptively charming to hide his trouble past. Once I started reading this, I couldn’t put it down. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
Fans of "Tangled" and Christina Lauren will enjoy "Tangled Up In You," the fourth installment in the Meant to Be Series.
The MCs (Ren and Fitz) relationship evolution closely resembles that of the film (minus cast iron frying pan) with a quasi-enemies to friends to maybe more than friends, to the inevitable HEA. It's entertaining, engaging and fun. Closed door and chaste by Christina Lauren standards, I think this would be an appropriate recommendation for an older teen. The ending was surprisingly dark with a resolution that was tied up a little too neatly- but this is Disney so I suppose that's to be expected.
NetGalley provided the ARC, opinion 100% mine.
This was a cute rom-com between Ren, who is sheltered but brave, and Fitz, who is charming but hiding, as they meet in college and go on a road trip to discover Ren's past and Fitz's future.
Both characters were well-developed, but the premise that this novel is a retelling of Rapunzel didn't really work for me. I feel like taking the magic aspect out of it, makes it more real but less fun. As always, your mileage may vary.
I was so excited to get this because Tangled is one of my top Disney Princess movies! The storyline did not let me down. I loved the banter between Fritz and Ren, I love love love a road trip, and every call back to the movie was great! I loved all the updated callbacks like the Snuggly Duckling becoming a biker bar, instead of lanterns her memories are sparklers, and Ren choosing to take a frying pan during an apocalypse as her item.
I love the idea for this collection--redoing the fairytales as romance novels! I was not familiar with the Meant to Be series, but I'll be picking up another. I adore that this is based off Rapunzel. Ren is the main character, a girl who's been raised on a farm where she's hardly exposed to the outside world. She's convinced her parents to let her go to college, though only with very strict rules--all study, no play, no boys, etc. She's very naive, which I thought was a fun change in this type of book. She's never used the internet or eaten fast food, etc. She meets Fitz on her first day at college, as he's to give her a tour, and of course, sparks fly though neither of them want them to. This was a fun, sweet story, and well written.
This is a contemporary version of Disney's Tangled story. They characters are young adults (22, not "YA" of the book classification variety) and the setting is modern USA with a centrally placed road trip from Washington state to Atlanta, Georgia. For those who enjoyed watching Tangled and the endearing Disney-fied version of her and Flynn Rider, I think you will be happily satisfied with the way that Christina Lauren weave the new narrative with nods to everything from the frying pan to the biker bar. I found it to be the perfect balance of youthful romance and weighty consequences.
As a side note, I am a Christina Lauren fan. This book is as well crafted as many of their others but the story and audience are different. I find it to be perfect for anyone with a love for Disney fairytales and it's appropriate even for our heavily censored high school library.
Thanks so much for the ARC!
This book was such a fun read, especially considering Tangled is one of my favorite Disney stories. Sometimes, especially at the beginning, it was hard to draw parallels between the tales. However, once the road trip began, it was fun to catch all the similarities. I really enjoyed the dual perspectives and even though I know the ending of Tangled, it was neat to see how it was interpreted for this novel. I’ve read all of the novels in the Meant to Be Series to date and this one definitely fits in and is an enjoyable read! 4.25⭐️, 0.5🌶
If you are a Disney princess fan, you will like this book! I was not familiar with the "Meant to Be" series. I was drawn to this because Christina Lauren is a big favorite of mine! I will have to find the others now as well.
Ren's character was a bit hard to believe throughout the beginning of the book. I think because she was so unexposed to our modern conveniences...but then was still very inept at Google and computer research. That just seemed unlikely. However, I realize that was necessary in order to convey how truly new every experience was for her. Despite this, her character was truly lovely, and I really enjoyed her.
Fitz was a likeable character too. I actually couldn't figure out where his storyline was going so that was a nice little surprise for me. His development throughout the story was vast and unexpected for a lighthearted book like this. Actually, speaking of that...knowing the Tangled backstory, I was concerned that such a heavy topic as kidnapping would be made light-hearted at the end, so I was really glad that it didn't happen that way. The grief, uneasiness and trauma were definitely dealt with in a satisfactory manner.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. I am a huge Disney fan and was skeptical but overall, I very much enjoyed this book!
I really wanted to love it but just didn't.
The story was cute and if you love Tangled, you'll love this book.
That being said, i just didn't love it. I know in the movie the fmc is naive, but i found the book fmc, Ren very annoying because she was so naive. I'm all for a princess retelling. I think it can be so so good, but i think there's "retelling" and there's "altered fanfiction" and it just very fanfiction like. I will say this could be a total me problem. I think i went into the book thinking it was Tangled Inspired and not a retelling so it was tooo spot on the nose for me.
Still very cute, just wasn't for me.
Thank you Netgalley and Hyperion Avenue for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
Christina Lauren strikes again with another fantastic romance novel. As a certified Disney freak and Christina Lauren superfan, the idea of a Tangled retelling written by this duo was almost too good to be true. And, unsurprisingly, this book lived up to my very big expectations.
Ren is a completely sheltered girl who has never left her farm in Idaho, never used a cell phone, and never heard of Taylor Swift (crazy I know). She manages to convince her parents to let her go to college at the age of 22, where she meets the golden boy on campus, Fitz. The two wind up on a cross country road trip together where all sorts of ooey-gooey romance goodness evolves between the two.
Although the story started off a little slow, the pace quickly shifted and turned into a story I couldn't put down. Tangled is one of my favorite Disney movies, and it was so fun to get to relive that story in a fresh, modern way. My one tiny little issue was that it didn't seem like all the plot points were fully fleshed out (namely, Fitz's backstory). But other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this retelling and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves a modern fairytale story.
This was so stinking cute! I am not typically a fan of retellings and honestly I’m not a big Disney girl, but when Christina Lauren say “jump” I say “how high?” (Aka I immediately read the ARC of their newest book which just so happens to be a retelling of the Disney hit, Tangled!)
Tangled Up in You was swoony and so sweet. It has been ages since I’ve seen the movie but let’s be honest, a girl does NOT forget Flynn Rider!!!
Happy to report that Tangled Up in You’s hero, Fitz, has all the charm and charisma of the animated dream boat. Also, the little parts of the book that aligned with what I did remember from the movie had me chuckling a lot.
