Tangled Up In You, by Christina Lauren, is a cute, quick read involving a naive college student who has been homeschooled all her life, her college friends, and the havoc that is fed by a DNA test. Thanks, NetGalley and the publisher, for providing me with the ARC ebook I read and reviewed. All opinions are my own.
Between reading hundreds of books, teaching herself how to paint and helping on her parent’s farm, Ren has never had the chance to go to school. When she finally convinces her parents to go, her life changes. She’s experiencing the world how it should be, with a completely open mindset. Fascinating everyone, especially Fitz. When she gets her hands on some information she needs answers to, she convinces Fitz to let her tag along on a cross country road trip to get answers.
This was probably the best retelling I’ve ever read. If had the perfect combination of original content and fairytale. Christina Lauren was the absolute perfect author duo to write this retelling.
I binged the entire book in a single sitting, smiling and kicking my feet the entire way through. The banter and friendships and relationships and just everything about this book was amazing.
I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to read this book early. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Hyperion Publishing for an eARC of this book.
loved this twist on tangled. I loved max being a car and the place where they went for help was the screaming eagles and loved the romance and how they found love on the adventure. I loved seeing mention of frying pans. Also loved the romance between ryn and fitz
Tangled Up In You is the reimagining of the animated movie Tangled. Although the story itself is predictable, I eagerly anticipated reading it and discovering how the writing duo, Christina Lauren, portrayed the story from a fresh perspective.
Tangled ranks high among my favorite animated movies. It follows the journey of Rapunzel as she ventures out of her tower with the help of the charming thief, Flynn Ryder. Tangled Up In You stays true to the original story, with a unique twist that instantly drew me in.
I thoroughly enjoyed this charming adventure. Ren, the female main character, was a delightful and optimistic character, full of dreams and innocence. As for the male main character, Flynn, he is essentially a modern-day version of Flynn Ryder.
This romance is refreshingly innocent without any explicit content, which I truly appreciated. Given the story and its appeal to younger generations, I expected it to be this way.
Overall, Tangled Up In You is a great read that will capture your heart. If you love road trips and grumpy sunshine stories, this book is definitely a must-read for you!
Thank you, NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue, for providing me with the ARC of Tangled Up In You.
Ever want to read a Disney fairytale that takes places in today’s modern world? Tangled Up in You delivered just that with this book. . The writing is beautiful and heartfelt, the characters fully developed people 7th grade - adults would love this story.
Tangled is one of my favorite movies and Christina Lauren absolutely PERFECTED this retelling. A funny charming heartstopping delight complete with cross country roadtrip and an explosive ending. Ren and Fitz will give you all the feels.
While I’m not a fan of Tangled, I’m a huge Christina Lauren fan so I jumped on the opportunity to read this early. It was not my favorite I’ve read by them and I would personally rank it low on my list of their books. It felt jumpy with its plot and the characters weren’t up to snuff. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, but definitely not in my recommended reads by them.
This was a really fun read, and I am enjoying the series as a whole. Of the four books to date, I think that this one and the one by Murphy are my favourites. And that's to be expected since I also like the authors and read their books outside of this series, where the other two authors are not ones I necessarily would pick up outside the Disney retellings.
I liked how this book aligned very closely with the Tangled story and how there were many allusions to the movie in the little details like Pascal and the frying pan. The way that the authors also incorporated the Snuggly Duckling tavern in a pretty ingenious way. Sure, maybe the story is a bit far fetched in some aspects - Snuggly Duckling being a good example - but it was fun and the characters were nicely developed. The romance too because it wasn't just a love at first site story either. Ren and Fitz have to figure out their friendship and their relationship before they develop into more than friends which, again, is true to the way that things evolve in the movie.
There were no big surprises in the book and that was ok because, well, if you saw the movie, you know where things are going and can predict how things will roll out. So, it was really up to the authors to pull together characters who were memorable enough to stand outside of the movie universe and to make the book a modern take on the Tangled plot.
All in all, if you like retellings and enjoyed Tangled, then this will be a great book to pick up and burn through. I also think it's appropriate for multiple age groups which is a bonus given that Christina Lauren tends to write for older audiences. And if you have read the other books or any of the other books in this series, this is a good one too!
I was thrilled to read this book, as I’m a big fan of Christina Lauren and the Meant to Be series.
The good:
-I enjoyed the dual POV. Just Fitz was definitely swoon worthy and captured the essence of Flynn from Tangled.
-I adored Ren and how she was so likeable as a character. I think her past + her naivety could have easily been construed as annoying, but it wasn’t
-this was my 3rd Meant to Be book I’ve read, and absolutely my favorite (despite Beauty and the Beast being my clear favorite Disney story!)
-I loved seeing how Christina Lauren captured scenes from the movie but made them fresh and original. The scene at the dive bar was so fun to explore. How they incorporated side “characters” like Max and Pascal was cute to see
-even though it was a short timeline in the book, I did feel the connection between Ren and Fitz was believable
The ehhh:
-I don’t think it needed to take so long for the reader to know Fitz’s past. Sure, I can see holding it out for Ren’s awareness, but I think it could’ve aided the reader’s empathy toward his character if they knew earlier in the story
-it ended kind of abruptly. I think an epilogue could help finish the story more completely than the one or two sentences used on the last page
-the SWAT/gunfire scene was a little bizarre to me. I don’t know how else CL could’ve wrapped it up and kept the integrity of the Disney story in a different way, but it was strange to me nonetheless
Overall, I did enjoy the story, the characters, and the way the modern retelling of a Disney classic tale was conveyed. I think Christina Lauren was a great choice for the Rapunzel story.
Thanks for the ARC!
A modern retelling of Tangled by my favorite author duo? Sign me up!
I was so excited to see how Christa Lauren would bring this book to life! Ren is a sheltered girl who has never been in the real world when she meets Fitz on a college tour right when her world is opening up. Will these two hit it off or will they burn up like a sparkler.
This is perfect for the romcom lover in your life!
Since I was young I loved the story of Rapunzel and had every confidence Christina Lauren would bring it to life in a romance novel that would be a must read! You immediately fall in love with Ren and deeply care about her well being. She’s raised off the grid and doesn’t know life any other way, until her parents let her go to college at age twenty-two. There she meets Fitz, a young man with a deeply guarded heart and past. He immediately finds Ren intriguing. Over spring break they set off on an adventure that will truly change both of their lives. You will find yourself feeling all the array of emotions through this book of love, second chances and new beginnings. These two do it best and this is a must read for all romance and Tangled lovers alike.
I loved this story until I got to the end, and it all fell apart for me. Summing up the ending in one poorly executed paragraph rubbed me the wrong way. Up until then, I thought the plot was great. Now that I see from other reviews that it's a retelling of a Disney movie, I guess there was a reason for the ending to sound so rushed and silly. Not being a Disney movie person, this was news to me.
As a longtime reader of Christina Lauren books, the lack of heat surprised me. Again, if it's a kids' story, I guess that's why. But I was disappointed, frankly. I wonder why they wrote it.
On the plus side, the twists and turns of the plot were amusing and kept me riveted, even though some of the important scenes weren't particularly well done. There were so many doubts in my mind about the way Ren was raised, none of it turned out to be much of a surprise.
The book would also have been so much more interesting if more had been done with Chris.
A solid five-star book that lost steam and turned into three for me.
I'll be more careful next time I agree to review something, and shame on me for not reading the blurb. I was just so excited to get to review one of their books.
Props to Christina Lauren for another great book! This is a wonderful modern day version of Tangled. I loved the take on it and was waiting for how the different events would unfold. I even forgot towards the end that her mother would show up! I read it in one day it was so good! Definitely read it. Great ending. Thanks to Netgallley for the ARC.
OMG I was so excited to be approved to read Tangled Up In You by Christina Lauren as an early reader! This story combines two of my favorite things- the Meant To Be Disney romance retellings and Christina Lauren, one of my absolute favorite romance authors! And obviously, this book met and exceeded all of my high expectations! Tangled Up In You is a Tangled reimagining, with our main female character, Ren, growing up on a homestead and finally getting the opportunity to go to college, albeit with many rules and limitations, by her parents. Fitz, our main male character, is the charming bad boy who reluctantly agrees to take Ren on his pre-planned road trip when she has questions about new she has received about herself.
Tangled Up In You follows along the Tangled plot fairly closely, especially compared to the other Meant To Be reimaginings. This book is very sweet and fun, there were points where I laughed aloud. I absolutely adored this book!
Tangled Up In You was a wonderful retelling of Disney's Tangled! The retelling of the Rapunzel story was believable, and as someone who loves the film (and with a 5 and 3 year old I have seen it many times) this was a fun and fresh spin! The character Ren was really enjoyable, and although she was sequestered from the outside world, she didn't seem naïve or unbelievable as a character. Her counterpart, Fitz (so glad we got away from Eugene) was a wonderful book boyfriend. I loved the care the authors took in expanding his backstory and motivations, as well as character development. In particular, the care Fitz took to make sure he wasn't taking advantage of Ren was very well done and not over the top. I also enjoyed the ending (no spoilers) and that after the BIG EVENT there was time spent to continue to develop the characters and not just a rush into the HEA.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book! I would definitely say it's more geared toward the less spicy inclined, but the relationship was still great!
I enjoyed this book by Christina Lauren. Goes well with the series of Disney stories. I love Tangled and love their writing. Just not my favorite from them. Great writing and enjoyable and maybe it was the modern day of the story but it was hard to believe someone had never had an iPhone, ever been off their land, never been anywhere and their parents finally let them go to college. The back story I would think they would have kept them home forever. Again, love Christina Lauren and their writing. Just not my favorite.
Okay, I was shook when I saw that tangled (one of my fav more modern Disney movies) was getting a retelling, but I was especially stoked when I saw that Christina and Lauren were doing it. So of course, I squealed when I got the approval through netgalley and let me tell you it didn't disappoint.
Knowing the story so well I wasn't sure how all the pieces were going to come together, but Ren and Fitz were perfect. Honestly this story was totally appropriate for older ya readers too as it does touch on some sensitive topics, but overall it was so well done. Ren was exactly how I pictured Rapunzel would be in modern times and Fitz was perfect for Flynn and all of the other details were tied together so well the only downside was that it ended so soon!
This was a super cute and fun read! Tangled is one of my favorite Disney movies and I loved all the nods and similarities to the plot of the movie. Ren and Fitz will make you laugh, make you angry and make you cry all at once. Ren is a sheltered ray of sunshine and Fitz is closed off and grumpy but yet Ren is able to wear him down. I loved the twist at the end!
*Thank you eternally to Christina Lauren, Disney and Hyperion Avenue for the digital ARC!*

🌶: 0/5 (but good tension)
Firstly, I am both a Christina Lauren and Disney Stan. So this was ENTIRELY up my alley (or tower). I loved this urban retelling of Tangled so much.
Sheltered Ren, wild smoldering Fitz. Two geniuses embark on a road trip to found family and find something else as well.
Ren has the breezy, happy, naivety that we love of Rapunzel, and Fitz captures the mischievous dashing Flynn Rider, BUT they are their own characters with very good backstories. The story has some good tension, mystery, and feel good moments. No spice, but that is fine by me since the story carries it completely without that - plus not many fairytales have steam!!
If you're a fan of CLo (who isn't???) And Tangled, you will eat this up like I did. Completely recommend for a quick, easy and enjoyable read. You'll fall in love with the characters and the journey.
Seriously. They can do no wrong. This Rapunzel adaption is perfect. Ren and Fitz go on an adventure and find themselves along the way. The banter was hilarious and the book loosely followed the movie we all love. There was practically no spice, which is not the norm for these authors but expected given the story. It was fun and I read it in one sitting.
