This book was a little different than the usual Josie Quinn thriller, but trust me when I say that just because it is different does not make it a disappointment. Instead of chasing a serial killer with the Quinn Dream Team, Josie is on her own locked away from the world, but this does not diminish her brilliant investigative skills. It only slows her down slightly. If you know Josie Quinn, you know she is resilient and tenacious.
Josie has been struggling since the loss of a team member that still haunts her (and me), as well as some news that has rocked her world. She needs a break. She ends up at trauma retreat in the middle of nowhere. The purpose of the retreat is to find healing, but to also unplug from the world - no cell service, no computers, rough cabins to stay in. This retreat is not for divas. Josie is at the retreat with five other tortured souls. The first portion of the book is a buildup where the characters and their issues are built. Some say this portion was slow, but I believe it was necessary to set up the remainder of the story. You can feel the tension between these characters, and I was waiting for a blowup. When one of them goes missing, you know this is not going to be good. When her body is found, Josie knows this was no accident. There is a killer in their midst. Josie is on her own without authority, spotty cell service at best, no team and there is a blizzard headed their way.
I would have never survived. I would have gone into full blown panic mode, but Josie Quinn is not your average person. The latter half of the book is insanely suspense filled as you learn more about these strangers that Josie is trapped with. The hits and surprises just kept coming. I was biting my lip, gritting my teeth and gripping the sides of my chair. So, although this was different from the usual Quinn book, it was clever and brilliantly written. If you enjoy a book that will keep you guessing, this one is definitely for you. Whew... I need a break now.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was my first Josie Quinn book and it worked well as a stand alone. I don’t feel like I’ve missed a lot of back story as there was times of recap. My favorite type of story is the locked room or isolated location mystery. This checked all the boxes, isolated location, no cell phones, possible stalker, lies, secrets, sordid history that comes back to haunt you. Now I want to go back and read more about Josie.
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Face Her Fear’, the nineteenth book in the Detective Josie Quinn series written by Lisa Regan, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
In an attempt to face her fears and overcome traumatic events in her past, Detective Josie Quinn books into the Sacred New Beginnings Retreat situated in an exposed region in Sullivan County and organised by psychologist Dr Sandrine Morrow. Soon after her arrival one of their party of six is found dead but escape is not an option as the snow deepens and with diminishing resources of heating and food there’s no way of leaving until help comes.
‘Face Her Fear’ is a gripping and all-consuming thriller where a killer is on the loose but with limited mobile phone connection there’s no way for Josie to call for help. It has a well-written and fast-paced plot combined with drama, suspense and nail-biting twists and turns as Josie tries to keep her fellow attendees safe while deciding which of them is a killer. This story has had me hooked from page one as Gretchen works steadfastly in the background and Noah risks his life to find Josie and bring her home. This is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller that I can highly recommend.
I love a good book set in location that you know outsiders do not have access to. It is interesting reading about how different characters react to disappointment, stressful situation, loss, and what they do when they face fear. Josie is on a retreat far away from anything and everyone, just the little group when they get snowed in and cannot get outside help. All this and a dead body too.
Well-plotted, interesting characters, and nicely spun story. I also enjoyed the tension between Josie and her partner. It gave it an extra spin. Well worth the read! How many authors can get to book 19 and the reader still want more? Not many, I tell you!
Another great Josie Quinn book. Josie goes to a retreat to try to relax and work through some things. (How many times does she try to take time off though and get better and she doesn't follow through). A winter storm comes through and everyone is in a panic. Residences at the retreat try to go for help, while Josie's husband tries to get to her from the outside. Guests end up murdered and there is no way to get help. I really enjoyed the storyline that tied the characters to the prologue. Kind of sad story, but still not enough to justify killing!
Wahoo! Another Josie Quinn story and a locked in mystery!! What a great combination for the perfect book to read on an icky rainy day! Josie is trying to get some help for her PTSD and dealing with the death of her teammate by attending a retreat way off the grid in the mountains. But when a severe winter storm hits and someone dies (is killed?), Josie has to put back on her detective hat to find the killer and protect the others. I also liked the parallel story going on off the mountain top as Gwen and Noah tried to reach Josie. One weird quirk that seemed to annoy me was Josie's stickler for following police procedure so much that she wouldn't look through rooms as though it might be considered an unlawful search. I felt like that was going a bit overboard with only the intent to make things harder for all the characters. Contrast that with Josie's intermittent ability to text with Gwen. Those two elements almost felt like little cheats. But ultimately, the story was suspense filled and kept the reader guessing until the end.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
Lisa Regan has done it again! Book 19 of her detective series involving Detective Josie Quinn and the Denton police Department. This time around Josie has gone to Sullivan County on a PTSD retreat along with five other people. Josie soon finds herself in a blizzard and one of the people goes missing. Sandrine Morrow the psychologist that all of them have come to see. The caretaker of the grounds is named Cooper Riggs. He has agreed to go down the mountain to get supplies except he doesn't return.
The group was asked to not bring any computers or phones or tablets. Most listened, but a couple of them didn't. Josie being one of them. She didn't have cell service except in a couple of places. For whatever reason her phone wasn't holding a charger either. The snow was coming down really hard and getting worse by the minute. They, as a group decided to go look for the missing girl, Meg.
Mean time Jose's husband Noah Fraley who is also a detective goes to Sullivan County to get his wife. Unfortunately, this police department is small and very busy due to the winter storm. He ends up finding out who the caretaker is and going to Cooper's house, only to embark on his own nightmare.
Needless to say this book will keep you on the edge of your seat! I thought I had figured out who had done it but, once again I was wrong! Good luck guessing your way through this one! Great book highly recommend!
Another Great Read by Lisa Regan with the Detective Josie Quinn Series. Josie was on a week long retreat for people with PTSD in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Josie was there with the coach and 5 other people and the caretaker. When they arrived at the bottom of the mountain they were told to leave their phones in the car and they had to snow mobile to the top of the mountain where there were no phones, internet or any other ways for communications. They were being taught how to deal with their problems and how to breath when they have troubles. When the snow started coming down Josie told the therapist that they need to leave before they get stranded. She was told the caretaker went to get supplies and help but it was too late they were trapped on the mountain and the heavy snow. When Josie went out for a walk she found one of the other attendee in the snow and realized she was murdered. Josie had to preserve the scene and any evidence along with protecting everyone else. This is such a page turner with so many twists and turns you will be on the edge of your seat and very surprised at the ending. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book.
Wow - this was an awesome read - had to finish it as soon as I could.
Josie Quinn returns - but this time she’s taking a week off to go to a therapy retreat high in the mountains. A week with 5 others who have all undergone trauma and suffer from PTSD. Not looking forward to it, Josie goes for it anyway despite receiving some life altering news before leaving home and not being happy with how things were left with her husband Noah.
The other people at the retreat seem relatively normal although Nicola & Brian don’t seem to be a very loving couple, and Meg is still traumatised by her stalker, especially as he wasn’t caught. Taryn is a bit of a mystery but she seems to dote on Sandrine Morrow the therapist who is running the retreat, whilst Josie feels most in common with Alice, an ER nurse.
Things change when a winter storm hits and they are cut off by feet of snow. Cooper Riggs, who looks after the camp, has not returned and then Meg is found dead. Josie immediately suspects foul play but decides against telling everyone.
As the storm gets worse, supplies and emotions get worse - can they all survive? Does anyone know they are trapped?
Another great read from Lisa Regan. Thanks to #NetGalley for the ARC
An excellent crime thriller with a cast of unique characters where nothing is as it seems. The novel expertly intertwines internal and external struggles of a few veteran characters while slowly unraveling the backstories of the others. The atmospheric writing combined with the locked-room mystery makes for an excellent read.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest of Face Her Fear (Detective Josie Quinn Book 19) by Lisa Regan. #FaceHerFearDetective #NetGalley
Wow! Lisa Regan knocks yet another one out of the park. Always a go-to author for me and she gets better and better. Compelling characters hooked me from page one and just never let go. I had a bit of whiplash going on and considered tossing my kindle across the room.
Thank you NetGalley, Lisa Regan and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Once again this author does a brilliant job, was it him, her or the other person? I never know until Josie starts putting the pieces together and giving the facts.
I've only read of few of this series, but I feel this one is different. A little slower to take off but I was still glued. A bit like being locked in a room knowing someone is the killer. Trapped in a blizzard this odd group of people are slowly running out of supplies and patience. A body is found and the mystery begins. No one else can surely get up to this snowed in place so the killer is in the room. Who is it and why?
Noah is trying hard to get to his wife and runs into his own issues. His life is also in danger.
What an exciting ride this story was. The characters are great, not sure about the new cop, time will tell where the author is taking him.
I highly recommend this series.
Lisa Regan has done it again! You think her new book can't top the ones that came before and she always delivers! This was my favorite of hers so far! The storyline was really well done and the characters so interesting on their own and collaboratively. The ending was a shocker! Hang on Lisa Regan fans, you're in for a great ride!
Lisa Regan never disappoints! This storyline was so wild and shocking. I love seeing Josie grow emotionally through each book. This one was full of so much healing and reflection for her. The tie-in between what she is facing personally and the main plot is setting things up for so much in the future for Josie and Noah and I am here for that next phase for them.
I loved this book!
It’s a little different to other books in this series but Josie is still the main character.
Josie heads out to the mountains for a few days at a retreat to deal with her grief. When one of the other guests goes missing, Josie starts to investigate. She doesn’t expect to find a dead body and on closer inspection she realises she has been murdered.
On top of this a nasty snow storm hits and Josie and the others are left stranded at the retreat.
Josie manages to get a phone signal and asks for help but due to the location no-one can reach them in all the snow.
Soon another guest is missing and Josie is scared to ge left here but there is nothing she can do.
This is a gripping thriller that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Face Her Fear is the 19th book in the Detective Josie Quinn series. It's best to read the previous books before reading this one. After solving her last big case, Josie finally takes the time to go to a retreat to process the trauma that she has had in her life. Isolated at the top of the mountain with her therapist, the caretaker and five other patients, Josie fears there is a snowstorm coming and they will all be stuck . Then, one of her fellow patients goes missing and is later found dead. Now Josie has no way of getting down the mountain and may be stuck with a killer on the loose.
This is different that the others. It was more about Josie's emotions and how she is dealing with all the trauma in her life. Not as suspenseful as the other books but it was still a good read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Lisa Regan for an ARC of "Face Her Fear" in exchange of an honest review.
Detective Josie Quinn was on a week long specialist retreat, high up in the Pennsylvania mountains, along with the coach and five others. The object was to teach each person how to go deep inside to where the traumas they had all faced were, and learn how to cope when something triggered those memories. Josie was still grieving the loss of one of their team, plus her traumatic childhood still needed attention. But in a matter of days, one of the women disappeared. Meg had faced a stalker who'd escalated and her escape to the retreat, and hope to put her life together, was something they all knew. As Josie organised a search, the bitter cold and snow flurries meant they needed to find her quickly. But it was her body they found...
With Josie's phone signal patchy at best, she tried to contact Noah and her team. She was aware of the danger surrounding them - the killer had to be one of the remaining few. How would she find out? She had nothing and no one to back her up - and then a second woman went missing. They were all in panic mode, and all Josie could do was keep them together - safety in numbers. But when a huge blizzard hit, their generator was almost out of fuel, the food supply was low and the bitter cold threatened to freeze them to death, Josie knew great fear. Would they be rescued before it was too late?
Face Her Fear is the 19th in the Detective Josie Quinn series by Lisa Regan and I loved it! Completely different to Josie's normal situations, cleverly plotted and written, I couldn't stop reading until I turned the last page! A deeply compelling read; I'm looking forward to #20 very much! Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Detective Josie Quinn is in Sullivan County. She is there for a week of respite and treatment as she is dealing with complex PTSD. There are only a handful of people at the Sacred New Beginnings Retreat. When one of them is murdered, and snow traps them for the time being, Josie does what she can to find the killer. She must do this while struggling to stay alive due to the elements - both weather-related, and where the killer is concerned.
Josie is married to Noah, who is part of Josie's
investigative team and they are currently dealing with a rift in their marriage. Josie tries not to think about Noah, instead trying to figure out why insomnia has taken over, and with a recent tragic loss of one of her team members, she is grieving badly.
Quite naturally, any mental health treatment is thrust aside as Josie knows there is a killer in their midst at the Retreat. On the other end, Noah is desperate to get to Josie, but the weather, and another danger, makes that impossible. Oh, the angst!
One thing that Josie learns quickly, is that everyone there is hiding something, and this makes it difficult to trust anyone there. Watching the snow fall persistently, they are stuck for an indeterminate amount of time.
With barely a phone signal and sometimes power, Josie is on her own. Even though she has taken measures, another patient goes missing. Again, who to trust in this precarious situation?
Although Face Her Fear is part of a detective series, there is definitely a locked-room edge to this book, a trope I have been reading often of late. I love how the different authors present the intrigue in these stories, keeping me guessing as to the killer's identity. That is exactly what Lisa Regan did with this book. Josie was on her own, and she never missed a beat.
I began this series with the third book, Her Mother's Grave, and have read and loved every book in the series since. Lisa Regan has done a fabulous job with Josie, Noah and other team members, and with this series as a whole. Bring on book 20. My Kindle is ready.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Wow--what a ride! I really enjoyed this intense thriller. The writing is atmospheric...you can feel the weather, the stress, the tension, the remote and isolated location. A definitely "to read" if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for access to this ARC.
It took a day or two to digest my feelings about this one…I’m so used to Josie being in charge of a case and running things from the great room at the office…this one felt like a different beast altogether. That’s not a bad thing at all I really enjoyed this one and I applaud Lisa for changing it up. It felt like a breath of fresh air for the series. We had all the usual characters but in a totally different capacity. The twists and turns felt new and exciting, literally had me guessing right up till the end. A total edge of your seat thrill ride…I’m anxious to see where the new detective is going to take us…
