The Summer Escape is book six in the Sunrise Cove series and while our heroine is a private investigator, she never expected to be investigating her own family!
Anna, a rule follower by nature, ends up meeting Owen, an adventurer, who comes to her convinced that the coin she is investigating is stolen from his great aunt Ruby and that Anna's father may have played a part in the theft!
Owen and Anna seem like they would be opposites, but in some ways that is why they seem to work together. Anna has a lot on her shoulders with work, helping to take care of her bedridden sister (who is pregnant with triplets!) and who is still dealing with things from her childhood. Will Owen and Anna be able to work together to figure out what happened to his great aunt Ruby's treasure?
There was a lot I enjoyed about the book, but there were also times I thought it drug. I enjoyed the characters and found the dialogue funny, especially Anna's sister Wendy. Overall it was enjoyable.
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for honest review**
Jill Shalvis can always be counted on for a good summer read and this book is no exception. Well written, relatable characters and an interesting story make this a winner
Anna and Owen are working together to solve a decade old crime that is personal to each, Owen's great aunt had a coin stolen from her and the coin shows up in Anna's dad possessions after he has passed away. Anna and Owen are also trying to ignore the attraction to one another while working on this case. Anna's sister, Wendy, is pregnant with triplets and on bed rest all while wanting to be part and be "to be taking along" even wanting Anna to wear a go pro camera, phone and earbud while Anna and Owen set out for their adventures.. It's a funny snarky story especially the banter between the sisters that had me laughing out loud. The chemistry between Anna and Owen was so so good too!
Definitely a good and enjoyable read!
Thank you to NetGally, Jill Shalvis and the publisher for this ARC
I love Shalvis' books. They are funny and light hearted and heart warming and this one is no different. I have never read one of hers that was mystery based however and it made for a fun read. I usually stay away from mysteries (just not my thing) but this one had just enough mystery mixed with the romance to be a lot of fun while still being able to relax and get lost in the story. This is listed as being part of a series but can be read with no problem as a stand alone. I will be happily waiting for more of her books to come.
"The Summer Escape" by Jill Shalvis centers on the discovery of a possibly stolen coin, igniting a battle between Owen and Anna over its rightful ownership. While Shalvis is known for her engaging romances, this novel falls somewhat short of her usual standard.
From the beginning, the book struggled to capture my interest, making it difficult to connect with or invest in the mc's journey.
One bright spot in the story is the subplot involving Anna’s sister, who is pregnant with triplets. The humorous and endearing attempts at naming the babies brought much-needed levity and charm.
Despite the issues with "The Summer Escape," Jill Shalvis remains a beloved author whose previous works I have enjoyed immensely. While this book did not meet my expectations, I look forward to reading more of her future stories.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
"The Summer Escape," the sixth installment of the Sunrise Cove series, works well as a standalone. Jill Shalvis delights her readers with a story that weaves together romance, mystery, suspense, and family drama, all while delving into the 'enemies to lovers' trope. Readers who enjoy this combination are in for a treat.
"The Summer Escape" features Anna Moore, a private investigator, and Owen Harris, an adventurer. The story begins with Anna and her sister Wendy grieving their father's death. Amidst sorting through his belongings, they stumble upon a valuable coin from the nineteenth century. Urged by Wendy, Anna embarks on an investigation that casts doubt on their father's legacy and thrusts her into a world filled with suspense, danger and romance.
Enters Owen Harris who learns of the coin, which so happened to be a part of a collection stolen from his aunt years ago. His aunt suffers from dementia, and he wants to find her lost treasure, hoping it would bring her a measure of comfort. Anna is the key to finding answers and so he hires her on the condition that he partners with her on the investigation.
I found this to be a delightful read. I've loved every book in the Sunrise Cove series, and The Summer Escape is a fantastic addition. Anna and Owen are delightful characters. Their playful banter and intense chemistry were a pleasure to follow. Despite their attempts to fight the attraction, it became increasingly difficult, particularly as they worked together to unravel the mystery.
They faced danger and emotional turmoil throughout their journey. It was gratifying to see how they overcame mutual distrust, which allowed them to work effectively as a team. Additionally, observing them grow closer and conquer their insecurities and fears was truly heartwarming.
Anna's dynamic with her sister added depth to the story. Their exchanges were enjoyable, though Wendy's meddling in Anna's affairs was annoying at various points in the story. "The Summer Escape" provided the perfect escape while ending on a positive note. I wholeheartedly recommend fans of the author and readers of the genre to add it to their summer reading list.
If you say Jill Shalvis I will say take my money! I have been reading Jill since her Lucky Harbor series. I love everything Jill Shalvis! I had the opportunity to meet her a few years ago and she is just so personable and sweet. I love following her on her social media and all of her snowmaggedon and crazy bear stories. Her new book, The Summer Escape is another 5 star book for me. The chemistry between Anna and Owen is smoking hot, the banter between the sisters is priceless. I can't wait to read her next book!
Thanks to Avon ooks for my copy of The Summer Escape by Jill Shalvis that came out on Tuesday!
While this is book 6 in the Sunrise Cove series, it can be read as a standalone. I enjoy Jill Shalvis books. I love the Lake Tahoe setting in this series and the wonderful characters. I liked the enemies to lovers with a mini mystery that helped push Anna and Owen together.
While this is a romance, I loved the relationship between Anna and her sister. The jokes about what Wendy would name her triplets had me laughing so hard.
You can't get better than this! Anna Moore and Owen Harris on an adventure to prove her dad innocent of stealing a million-dollar necklace. Their chemistry was off the charts and their adventure off the rails! The end of the adventure was epic and kept me guessing! And the best part: they come together for a happy ever after!
Loved the story and the characters. It is full of humor and love. Anna has closed herself off from anything that resembles love. She has been hurt so much in the past. She loves her family, but romance is completely out. Owen has had plenty of relationships, but his heart was never involved in any of them. He is still friends with his exes, but they will all tell you that he is good as a friend, but not as anything deeper. Anna's sister, Wendy, is pregnant with triplets. She says she always wanted children; she just didn't expect to have them all at once. It is hard work growing three humans. When Anna discovers a coin amongst her father's things, Wendy encourages her to see if it is worth something. It is worth a lot, but it is also one of a group of coins that were stolen years before. Owen's aunt had the coins and a necklace stolen from her and Owen believes that Anna's father is the one who stole them. As they investigate, Anna finds that her father wasn't the man she thought he was. She and her sister have to come to terms with his faults and try to forgive him. To love him for the man they knew him to be. Anna and Owen find that they have some deep feelings for each other, but they are both afraid to take the leap into love. Will they find the loot? Will they embrace the love?
Anna and Wendy find a gold coin in their late father’s things leading Anna on a tumultuous trip to find the truth and a treasure. NetGalley ARC.
Anna is a private investigator. She never expected to be investigating a mystery in her own family! That’s how she meets Owen. He’s convinced that the coin Anna is investigating was stolen from his great aunt Ruby along with a very valuable piece of jewelry. Anna is a rule follower and Owen is a risk taker. Is there too much between them for them to ever develop a relationship?
The author did a good job giving Anna growth. She had to learn to take chances instead of following rules. Owen doesn’t have growth like Anna does. There are some good side characters with some fun moments. For example, Anna’s sister, Wendy, is bed ridden because she is pregnant with triplets.
My one issue with this story is that I found it to be completely forgettable. I had to go through all of my notes to remember any of it. I can’t explain what makes one book memorable and the other forgettable but based on my notes I think that this book didn’t hit any major emotions for me so I just don’t remember it.
This story takes place in Lake Tahoe. It is a contemporary romance and mystery. Family secrets are unearthed. The characters are both business owners and dedicated to their families. I generally love books from this author so even though this one didn’t stick with me, I will read more from this author in the future.
Adventure guide Owen seeks justice for the theft of his family’s legacy. He hires investigator Anna, whose late father is suspected of the heist. Despite their differences, Owen and Anna can’t deny the chemistry between them as they navigate a dangerous path.
This romance has a strong suspense plot, yet still revolves around home and family. Anna struggles with trust issues, but Owen is sweet and supportive. This page-turning novel is funny, heartwarming, and a pleasure to read.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
A crime and a romance combine for a delightful story of opposites attract. Private detective Anna is involved in a case which could implicate her deceased father. Owen is the grand nephew to the woman whose things were stolen. As Anna and Owen work together, ties that bind their hearts slowly begin to untie.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Summer Escape by Jill Shalvis is the 6th book in her wonderful Sunrise Cove series. Anna Moore, our heroine, is a private investigator, who is very good at her job. Her sister, Wendy, is pregnant, carrying triplets, and Anna, aside from her work, is always bringing food or rushing to help Wendy. One day, when looking at their deceased father’s belongings, they discover a rare coin; which turns out to be part of a missing million-dollar necklace.
We meet Owen Harris, who visits Anna to look at the coin, and he explains that the missing necklace was stolen years ago from his aunt Ruby. Owen suspects that maybe Anna’s dad might have stolen the necklace, with Anna determined to prove her dad’s innocence. Owen owns an adventure guide business, and they begin an adventure looking for clues in this mystery. Wendy is bedridden, and she connects remotely to an ear bud, during Anna and Owen’s escapades; which actually turned into fun and hysterical highlights, throughout the book.
Owen and Anna fight off the strong and hot chemistry between them. They both feel they are not right for each other, but the more time they spend together, they know that they are falling hard. Anna fears commitment, as well as previous abandonment from past relationships, and Owen is the first to show his feelings to Anna. Of course, Wendy constantly pushes them to open their hearts; she was a riot, especially when she eavesdropped on their phones.
I loved the camaraderie between Anna and Wendy, and how devoted they were to each other. Anna was always running around, on the case, her work, and always watching over Wendy. So much fun. Another wonderful part of the story was when Wendy, Hayden and Anna, would pick crazy names for the triplets; for example Buffy,Willow,Cordelia; Phoebe,Monica,Rachel, just to name a few. Lots of laughter. As they get closer to the end, the danger escalates, with lives on the line. The epilogue was very good.
The Summer Escape was a heartwarming story about family, love, humor, mystery, intrigue, danger, and so much laughter. I loved Anna and Owen, as they were great together. I also loved Wendy and her husband Hayden, as well as the secondary characters. The Summer Escape was so very well written by Jill Shalvis. If you have not read Jill Shalvis, you are missing a gem; as she is one of the best at wonderful sweet fun romances.
Another great summer read from Jill Shalvis. Well-written book with 2 main characters, Anna and Owen, who have commitment issues and massive chemistry. The story starts off with a mystery that brings the 2 main characters together. Great secondary characters, such as Anna’s sister, Wendy, really added to the story and provided lots of great snarky dialogue. I rooted for the main character Anna and admired how hard she worked to overcome her fear and insecurity—whether it was climbing a mountain or finally admitting she loved Owen. Sweet, funny, and satisfying. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
The Summer Escape is book 6 in the amazing Sunrise Cove Series by Jill Shalvis.
Jill can write the absolute best stories!
This series is my most favorite.
Anna and Owen are on an adventurous quest. And I loved following them along with Ann’s sister Wendy.
I always enjoy the way the author writes such emotionally deep stories but infuses them with humor and amazing witty banter.
Filled with Shalvis's usual heart, humor and likeable characters, The Summer Escape delivers on every level.
Thank You NetGalley and Avon for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
The Summer Escape (Sunrise Cove #6) by Jill Shalvis is as always an awesome read that gets you from the very beginning. It’s an enemies to lovers story that is very well written that makes you feel like you are right there with the main characters. Highly addictive and recommended!
The Summer Escape is an enemies/friends to lovers journey that will have you laughing or tearing up. This book is full of snark and awesome characters that you can't help but love. I loved the interactions between Anna, her sister, Owen, and Wendy. This book was very well written and just the perfect amount of everything we expect from a Jill Shalvis book with a little more comedy. I cannot wait to read this book again. The Summer Escape is a part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

4.5 stars
There are three POVs in this book and I was unsure how I would feel about that at first. As much as I can enjoy a women’s fiction story with romantic elements, I thought this one would be a true Romance. I was so glad that it did end up in that category. The love story between Anna and Owen is central to the book and there is definitely an HEA for all of the main characters. I also thought I would get annoyed with Anna’s sister Wendy having her POV shown, but I didn’t. Seeing things from Wendy’s POV helped me to understand Anna better so it was almost like Wendy’s POV mashed into Anna’s POV in my brain.
Owen is such a softy. At first glance he seems like the type of guy that takes his good looks and charm for granted, using them like a weapon. Very quickly it becomes obvious that isn’t the case. He cares deeply about his family and friends and is an all-around wonderful person. Although Anna’s first meeting with Owen showed her the arrogant side of him, he couldn’t keep his true nature from her for long. Their connection was instant so it was just about impossible for him to be anything but kind toward Anna.
The visceral reactions these two had when with the other gave me the warm fuzzies. Having someone who can calm and center you is one of life’s greatest gifts. They both knew this but still tried to deny it, especially Anna. Owen is patient and understanding of Anna’s reticence, which further endeared him to me.
This story comes with a little mystery for Owen and Anna to solve, which keeps this story moving. I thoroughly enjoyed the bond Anna and Wendy had and how seamlessly Owen fit into Anna’s small family.
As always with this series, this book is a true standalone. Location is what ties the books together.
