John works long hours as a financial advisor with a mysterious past. His wife Regan, a stay at home mum of 2 children left to do most of the parenting while John is working long hours…. Is there more to what John is doing? A twisty crime thriller with a lot of story and I feel the characters are quite well developed for the most part. This book had me turning the pages, although a bit of a slow burn in places, it was a good story that kept me intrigued. I enjoyed the mysteriousness regarding John and his background. This was cleverly done and the story was gripping. It’s well written and is easy to follow and read! This would make a great summer thriller read. I rate this book 3.5 stars. Rounded up to 4 for Goodreads.
Let’s start with the positives. The story moved fast, the end was not predictable and there weren’t too many characters to keep track of. Now the negatives. The story was boring. It did have potential but it never never really got there. This book was about a Ponzi scheme but yet there was barely a storyline in regards to it. I usually enjoy stories being told from two points of view……but this simply repeated the same point of view…just told by the two different characters. Like the author just copy and pasted to fill space.
Regan is shocked when her husband gives her a beautiful new lake house as a birthday present, but the fairytale birthday turns into a nightmare when, the next day, he never comes home. Instead, Regan is surprised to find FBI agents with not only a search warrant of her home, but also a warrant for the arrest of her husband.
This is an outstanding mystery! At almost 400 pages, the book flew and I read it in a little over 24 hours. The pacing, plot twists, and author’s writing style kept me completely intrigued until the very end. I’ll definitely recommend near publication. Thanks so much for the opportunity to read!
the day he never came home✨ | ARC review
this thriller was more steady than a faced past one (which i enjoyed) and it had a really good plot! there’s also nothing i love more than a dual perspective and really getting into what makes each character tick. this one did it exquisitely. sometimes you can catch mistakes or things that are slightly off, but that was not the case here. i could clearly see and understand each character’s pov for the same situations. there were also some well delivered twists, and the writing style was very smooth. overall this was a four star read for me!
A slow paced thriller with twist and turns that will blow your mind and keep you guessing until the very end. The characters are well developed and the story unfolds slowly but surely. I liked the dual POV’s as John’s story from his POV was important to the plot but it did get a bit boring at times and it dragged, other than that I really enjoyed this book, and especially the epilogue.
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for a digital ARC copy.
I really enjoyed this thriller! It was very engaging, I didn't want to put it down. The end was crazy!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!
I've heard of this author before and always heard great things so I was very excited to get to read this one and it lived up to the hype
I really liked this book and would recommend checking it out for yourself! It's about a man who always wanted to be rich. He ended up starting a Ponzi Scheme. This thriller is full of shocking twists, and makes you continue to wonder what will happen next. Does anyone catch onto what he is doing? Will he stop before he gets caught? If you want the answers you will have to read this book for yourself!!
Regan’s husband John works long hours as a financial adviser. He often comes home late and he's always been mysterious about his past. One random day John buys Regan a beautiful lake house and Regan puts all of her annoyance at the late nights at the office aside because she sees how him working so hard is paying off now they have this beautiful lake house!
BUT… the next day, John doesn't come home from work. The FBI shows up soon after, and they’re looking for John!
As Reagan uncovers more about John she becomes entangled in his web of lies that have been going on his entire life and she realizes she didn't know John at all
This book did something very interesting - it switched POVs midway through the story and it gave some background on John that I think was essential to the plot. I really enjoyed how the author added in John's POV.
Overall, I think it was a really good twisty domestic thriller and I'm excited to read more from this author. It was beautifully written!
If this sounds interesting to you, definitely check out The Day He Never Came Home by Andrew DeYoung which is coming out July 9th 2024! Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC!
I really liked this story and then it switched POV's which is ok and I did find John's perspective interesting and relevant to the story but I do feel his POV could have been tailored down a bit. I found it to be a little too detailed to keep the reader engaged so after a while I was getting bored with his POV but ultimately I did like the ending. There are twists and turns and the story was interesting and kept me guessing as to what was going to happen. I especially liked the epilogue as I think it leaves the door open for a possible sequel in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press and Andrew DeYoung for a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very interesting story with many layers. I really enjoyed the dual perspective of the same timeline. Learning John’s backstory was important to the main plot and provided context for his future decision making, but it also dragged a bit at times. This isn’t an edge of your seat, fast paced thriller, but it is a solid story with good character development and a compelling plot. Overall, I enjoyed it!
Instagram post coming 3/31!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read this advance copy!
I really enjoyed this book. I kept changing my mind about whether Regan and John were good or bad. In the end, I realized they were both flawed people who had difficult childhoods and were just trying to find love and succeed in life, even if they made mistakes.
I definitely recommend this book… thanks Netgalley for letting me get access to the ARC!
This book is absolutely amazing in the first half. It lost me a bit in the second half a lot of the stuff I felt was being repeated that was needed, although it also added an interesting perspective on a situation from the eyes of a different person. Telling you who that person is and whose perspectives we are talking about would be a spoiler so I will not mention it.
This book is an examination of how any person is not all good, or all bad, but 1 million shades of Grey. It is about the test of a marriage, and how parenthood affects the marriage, it is about how far you will go for your children for your wife for your husband and whether or not you will sacrifice your husband for your children and vice versa.
For me the characters of the book are on the edge of being relatable and unbelievable. There are dimes during the narration that I could imagine these characters being people I’ve come across my life, but then they would go and do something absolutely unexpected and I would wonder who would do that.
Overall, this is a fun book to read on a weekend.
Thankyou NetGalley for my advance reader copy!
Regan Peters has always known her husband John is less than what he seems.
The day after he gifts her with a magnificent house on a lake on her birthday with the
deed in her name only, he vanishes.
When he fails to come home, leaving her with their two small children and FBI
agents pounding on their door with search warrants, she finally sees just how "unreal"
he actually was. Accused of a Ponzi scheme with millions stolen from innocent victims, his
misdeeds have now changed her life forever.
But is she really as innocent as seems??
Stay tuned.
A very good thriller with unexpected twists that will blow you away.
The characters are very well presented; intense dislike of some will attest to great
descriptive writing at work.
The story unwinds quickly and will keep you at it long past your reading allotted time has come and gone.
I've had a great time and would have loved to read another book by that author. It was easy to love and even sympathize with the characters. I liked that it wasn't like any other book with lies and deceptions in a marriage. It's gone deeper, and I really felt for the woman and her husband. It seems to me that it's written well, and it's a reasonably fast read.
The Day He Never Came Home showcases how a mother will do absolutely everything in her power to protect her kids. Do we really know the ones we love? Regan thought she knew her husband John, until the FBI showed up with a warrant to search their home and arrest him - only he’s already disappeared.
As a midwestern girl, I loved that this popcorn thriller was set in the twin cities! Easy to read, fast chapters keep your attention as you watch how Regan’s one simple, innocent lie spirals into more. Where is John, and what happened to destroy their seemingly perfect lives? It really did give off vibes similar to “The Last Thing He Told Me” but with a fresh twist and I’m totally here for it. 🍿 👏
Thank you to NetGalley & Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read this digital ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Such a good read! I started off thinking it was a gone girl type of story only to be wrapped up in so much more. I went back and forth about how I felt about Regan and John. Were they good or bad? I ended up coming to the conclusion that they were both just messed up individuals from their early childhood trying to be loved and make it in this world and they messed up along the way! Highly recommend this book and author!
Wow! Twisted read. Regen Peters and John Peters have what appears to be an idealistic marriage. Two wonderful children a boy and a girl 4&2 years old. Regen is a stay at home mom by choice but is a very talented interior decorator. John has his own business taking other people’s money and turning it into a fortune. All is not as it seems. What develops is the disappearance of husband John, FBI involvement ,murder, lies, danger. Is there a way out of this disaster they find themselves in? Very good read. I was given an advanced reader copy of this well written book by NetGalley and I am freely sharing my review.
I enjoyed this and would definitely read another book by this author. The characters were easy to like and even empathize with. I enjoyed the fact that this wasn’t like every other book with lies and deception in a marriage. It went deeper and I really felt for both the wife and the husband. I feel like this was well written and a decently fast paced read.
Publication date: July 9th, 2024
Page count: 368
Genre: domestic thriller
Setting: Minnesota
POV: multiple
Reagan is a stay at home mom, with a husband that is a financial advisor, who is preoccupied with work. One day the FBI comes looking for her husband for committing fraud, and she realizes that much of her husband John is a fraud. She soon has the FBI, criminals that John dealt with, and others wanting things from her. Who was John? How will she protect herself and her children?
The first 1/2 of the book from Reagan’s POV is very engaging. About 1/2 through the book’s POV becomes John’s, and it became a bit dry with excessive details, and much less engaging. Picked up again at the end.
Twists, turns, suspense.
