I remember hearing about this case on the news but couldn't remember how it was resolved. I did wish at time that the author went into more details about the case, but maybe the details of the case are just that limited and he did the best he could. I did enjoy the book and the author.
This book is about Lauren Spierer, a college young lady that disappeared one night after partying with some friends. The police have drained every lead they have had and have not been able to find any trace of her. None of her friends, including her boyfriend, were able to help and all had good alibis. The book is written by a reporter who followed the case from the beginning. He worked with her parents to get any and all information from them that might help, no matter how small. After all, they really wanted her home and they asked him for his help. This book is his way of reaching out to get anyone with any information to come forward. This book really hit my heart and I feel so much for her parents. I would not want to be in their positions. I truly hope that someone will come through with any information that will help them. It is a great read, but not fast and it is a heartbreaker.
This book looks into an unsolved mystery: what happened to Lauren Spierer?
This is a frustrating read, but this is not the fault of the author. The fact that so many people just refuse to speak about what happened is mind boggling. You can’t help but feel sorry for Lauren’s family, still desperately seeking answers.
I don’t feel that this book shares much new information but it was good to read all the available evidence in one place. As readers we can only hope that one day, the Spierer family will learn the truth.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for my copy of this book.
In 2011 Lauren Speirer disappeared.
This case has never been solved and questions regarding what happened have gone unanswered for 13 years.
I do not remember hearing about this when it happened and the author did a good job of detailing the case for those who may not be familiar with it.
This is the kind of book that leaves you with more questions than answers.
Well written, and well researched.
I am a big true crime fan but this is only the second true crime book that I have read. Shawn Cohen tells Lauren's story in a respectable yet informative way. He draws awareness of her story and his book is informative about the case. Thank you to Shawn Cohen and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was interesting mainly because I have been a college girl myself and most of us wouldn't have batted an eye at what would be referred to as "hard partying behavior" like Lauren's. Most people make it home, most people aren't abandoned drunk and with a possible head injury, but in Lauren's case she just vanished after such a night. It's terrifying and sad.
But did this book add much to the story? Not really. I think the author did a terrible job of explaining his "new information" and theories. This is not one of the better true crime books I've read, but it does highlight how easy it is to cover up a crime when you're wealthy.
Would recommend if this is your first time hearing about Lauren's case.
The book investigates the disappearance of Lauren Spierer, a college student who vanished in 2011 after a night out with friends in Bloomington, Indiana. Cohen, an investigative journalist, meticulously reconstructs the events of that night, providing new details and insights into the case.
Cohen’s writing is both thorough and engaging, bringing a journalistic rigor to the story that is both informative and emotionally resonant. The way he lays out the minute-by-minute account of Lauren’s last known movements is incredibly detailed, creating a vivid picture of that fateful night. What I found particularly impactful was Cohen’s ability to humanize Lauren, making her more than just a case but a real person whose loss deeply affected her family and community.
The book also highlights the numerous flaws and missed opportunities in the investigation, adding a layer of frustration and urgency to the narrative. Cohen doesn’t shy away from pointing out these shortcomings, making a compelling case for why the mystery of Lauren’s disappearance remains unsolved. His interviews with friends, family, and those who were with Lauren that night add depth and multiple perspectives, making the reader feel the weight of the unanswered questions.
Overall, College Girl, Missing is a gripping and heartbreaking read that brings much-needed attention to Lauren Spierer’s case. It’s a powerful reminder of the impact of unsolved disappearances and the importance of continuing to seek the truth. If you’re a fan of true crime and investigative journalism, this book is a must-read.
This is a true and horrifying story about a girl named Lauren Spierer, a sophomore at Indiana University, who went missing on June 3rd, 2011 after a night out partying. To this day, her body was not found and no one knows what happened to her.
The book itself was an easy read, albeit a truly terrible and heartbreaking one.
I was invested in the story from the beginning. The author starts the book with giving us more details about Lauren and who she was before she went missing.
Unfortunately I was unfamiliar with this case back in 2011, so everything that author wrote in the book was new information to me. What makes me sad is that it seems like there are people who aren't telling the whole story, who aren't telling the truth, and who know more of what happened the night when Lauren went missing.
As this is an unsolved case, there are still too many questions. What truly happened that night? What are those people hiding? Why didn't anyone help her? How come her body just vanished? Was she murdered? Did she die by accident? Did her heart give out? Was her body hidden in the construction site?
There are way too many questions, and it's long overdue for Lauren's family to get the answers.
I hope that this book and Lauren's story encourages someone to come forward with helpful information. Thoughts and prayers to the family.
College Girl, Missing is a true crime book that focuses on the disappearance of Lauren Spierer, a young student at the University of Indiana who goes missing June 3, 2011, after a night out of partying. Her body is never found and no one has any idea where she could be.
The beginning of the book was promising and starts off giving the reader insight into who Lauren was before her disappearance and her struggle with alcohol and drug abuse. As the story progresses and we are introduced to more of Lauren's friends the author goes back and forth between using their first or last names to identify them and it starts to get confusing and hard to remember who is who. This is where the book began to read more like a police report then a story.
As Shawn Cohen is a journalist, I had expected better writing, where I would have felt a better connection to Lauren, but it was very sterile writing. Then there was the grammatical issues, bad sentence structure, numerous run on sentences, it definitely needed another round of edits
I expected more from this book. It reads more like a memoir of the authors life during the time of Lauren's case and then the follow up. If you're a true crime lover, I wouldn't recommend this book as that's not really what College Girl, Missing is.
Thank you to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is a true crime book about the disappearance of college student Lauren Spierer. She vanished after a night of partying. The author goes through the many theories about what may have happened to her, although we still don’t know. There was a lot of good information in this book, and I really hope Lauren’s family gets the answers they deserve!
Written just like listening to a podcast. The information was presented in a way that made you want to keep reading. I wish there had been more questions answered for the family.
Twenty year old Lauren Spierer, a petite outgoing young woman went missing from Indiana University in June 2011 after a night out with friends. Although she had spent time with dozens of witnesses and could be seen on security cameras throughout the area investigators were still confounded by how a young woman could vanish almost in plain sight. She left the townhouse complex of two fellow male students for a walk home of just a few blocks but never made it. Witness statements were conflicting and several lawyered up and refused to speak further. Why? . Now years later her friends and parents are still haunted and still seeking answers. This well crafted true crime narrative was written with the full support of Lauren's parents who provided documents and other information. A long time journalist the author's prose in clear and concise but written with empathy. The author presents several theories as well as suspects. It is sincerely hoped that the outreach from this full length book on the case will inspire someone with information to develop a conscience and step forward so that Lauren's family and friends can at last have the answers they need. Any reader who enjoys a well presented true crime novel would find this novel informative and interesting.
I am not going to read something that mentions Israel in a positive light. I’m only leaving a review for this because if I don’t it’ll affect my feedback ratio.
Short, yet fascinating story on a missing girl who is still missing. An active and open investigation into the disappearance of Lauren Spierer and the people who were the last to see her alive. It's hard to read these kind of stories, because you want that fairytale ending of 'she was found safe and sound', but the reality is that the family sits in limbo for closure. I hadn't heard this story before, and I sincerely hope that she is found, and soon. Very well done investigative research.
*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*
20 year old Lauren Spierer went out for a night with friends in Indiana and never made it home. She was seen in public by witnesses and cameras, and went to the home of several wealthy male students to never be seen again. Did she ever actually leave?
This book is a recount of the night Lauren went missing, and the ever changing stories from the main suspects. Unfortunately, Lauren is still missing and authorities never made an arrest in her case. I believe this book was written to put pressure on the suspects, and was a great read. It’s important to remember that the available facts are scant, yet the author does a great job reporting the information.
I had never heard of Lauren before, and I’m glad I read this one. Hopefully this book helps bring Lauren the justice she deserves. Lauren has been missing from Bloomington, Indiana since June 3, 2011.
This was both an interesting and frustrating read. The author spent over a decade doing thorough research on this case and it makes the reader feel informed and involved. I become invested in the mystery of what happened to Lauren. I was also frustrated at the lack of communication and help received from those with her in the final hours before she disappeared. This is a case that seems easily solvable, or at least could have been unavoidable if only one person had spoken up. Instead, they hid behind lawyers immediately
While not terrifying in the sense of most true crime, it was deeply unsettling as it looks at the party culture at many of our higher learning institutions and the vulnerability it creates for the young women who attend them. It was a compelling, yet aggravating read. Thank you to @netgalley and @sourcebooks for providing me with an e-arc.
Since the story that this true crime memoir is based on remains unsolved, this read left me with more questions than answers once I finished. However, the author has done an excellent job of researching this horrific crime and discussing all the possibilities.
If you like having an answer in your true crime reads, then this might not be the one for you, but I highly encourage all true crime fans to read this one in the hopes that the story stays active and answers are found.
Really good! The author should feel proud bc this story is beautiful and tells a story that not many could write this way.
A heart wrenching true story about the 20 year old college student, Lauren Spierer, who disappeared after a night out with friends. Thirteen years later, she has not been found. The author takes you through his investigation and attempts to bring new life to this case.
I had heard very little about this case before reading this so I was very intrigued. This book is out now and if you enjoy true crime I would definitely check this one out!
Thank you to @NetGalley and @Sourcebooks for this advanced copy!
Lauren dissappeared and immediately became a huge case. No one knew what had happened and her family was determined to find their daughter. But there were many problems that occurred during this case. There were missed interviews, botched investigations and more.
This was a great look into her disappearance and gave a lot of information as to what had actually happened to Lauren. This brought in other experts to help find out why there were so many mistakes. I thought this was a great book and would recommend for crime buffs.
