Having shot her landlord, Grace and her brother Tom leave for the Oregon Trail. Reading her struggles were heartbreaking. I was swallowed up by this story.
Imogen Martin has written something truly special with To The Wild Horizon. If the gorgeous cover isn't enough to hint at the epic, sweeping adventure you will be going on in the pages of this book, then allow me,
No spoilers.
In 1846 Grace and her younger brother Tom are in a fix and need to leave town immediately. With a wagon train about to depart for the west, to the promise of a new life in Oregon - Grace knows she has to be among the pioneers, no matter the cost. And for a young woman with dangerous secrets travelling alone, there will be hardship, endurance and heartache like she's never known.
But love is to be found in the most unexpected of places and Grace finds herself falling for the military man in charge of the train who could tear her life apart - the uptight, diligent and handsome Captain Randolph.
Grace, herself, is brave, headstrong, loyal and resourceful - the perfect foil to Randolph who has yet to encounter any woman like her. The tension that develops between them as the story develops is steamy, hot and achingly romantic.
The attention to detail along the infamous Oregon Trail is jaw dropping. There is a colourful, wild, cinematic feel to this book, reminiscent of movies like Far and Away, or the more recent Paramount series 1883. I would love to see this story on the big screen.
If you are wondering whether you would like this book, don't delay - buy it! You will be swept along in a truly epic and romantic tale of love, endurance and hope.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advance reading copy of this book. All views my own.
5 stars, Redemption
TO THE WILD HORIZON
by Imogen Martin
Grace Sinclair and her little brother Tom are on the run. They join up with a wagon train at Independence, Missouri in 1846. They were already planning on heading to Oregon, although they had to leave quicker than they had originally planned on.
Captain Randolph is the leader of the wagon train. He doesn't allow single women to travel in his trains, he'd rather not have any women on the train, simply because they are a liability. They're weak and can't do much or take care of themselves.
Grace and Randolph butt heads in many ways along the trail. Grace finds herself discriminated against, by the Captain. They both have to learn to work together and not against each other.
This is a great historical fiction novel. Highly recommend. I will read it again and again in the future. I will look for it to give as a gift to my book-loving friends.
I received a complimentary copy of #ToTheWildHorizon from #StormPublishing #NetGalley I wasn't obligated to post a review.

This is a story of perserverance despite all the obstacles against you.
A young woman whom fears for her life, lets a lie of omission stand, and flees from Missouri to Oregon, now today might be ok, but this is 1846, and getting there is no easy feat.
She is taking care of her young brother after the deaths of her parents, and now wants to get to her bother in Oregon.
Then we have a Captain Randolph, he has the respect of his unit, and doesn't tolerate untruthfulness, and Grace knows this. She enters with a big lie, but soon earns respect of the train.
What happens when secrets are revealed? Well, we are there, and there are so many surprises with this read, but the epilogue didn't set well, but you will have to judge for yourself.
Come and journey on a wagon train, with all its danger and obstacales!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Storm Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.
Westward Ho the wagons! This story about Grace and her brother Tom was quite the novel. Having to leave Independence, Missouri due to an unforeseen occurrence, Grace summons up her courage along with her 10 year old brother, Tom, and joins a wagon train going out West. to Oregon, It is not an easy trek, especially for a young woman alone. Yet, she is determined, but is she capable? The book was well written and enjoyable, one I would highly recommend.
This book is fantastic! It’s a powerful story about a young woman, Grace, and her 10-year-old brother, Tom, who joined a wagon train headed to Oregon from Missouri in 1846.
The long journey was hazardous and dangerous, especially for a young woman who was determined to get her brother to safety. They encountered dangerous terrain as well as dangerous men, but they also encountered the love of strangers, later to be friends, and even romance, along the dusty Oregon Trail.
This is a story of hardship and struggle, but ultimately it’s a story of love and survival. I’m excited to recommend this 5-star book, which hits the shelves on February 7, 2024. Thank you, NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
Despite enjoying Imogen Martin’s first book and despite my life-long love of all things Oregon Trail, ultimately this was a letdown. Especially so when it shifted from historical fiction to steamy romance novel — not my cup of fictional tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Grace kills her landlord in self-defense, but she is afraid no one will believe her, so she and her brother Tom join a wagon train. i enjoyed this book very much, holds your attention.
Take a journey west with Grace and her brother Tom. This story shares the hardships on the trail as they build relationships and friends. The story started a little slow, but it was an enjoyable read about the Oregon Trail. #netgalley #imogenmartin #tothewildhorizon
I enjoyed going west with these people and the adventures and challenges that met them along the way. I found it so encouraging to see women who were able to stand up for themselves and take care of themselves. There were a couple of places where I skipped a few pages because I didn't need all of the details. I enjoyed the characters of Grace, Tom, Randolph, Eunice and Turner.
Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own
I enjoy stories about pioneers, and this one started off with a bang (get it?). Ms. Martin does a wonderful job of creating the characters of Grace and her little brother Tom. I liked the descriptions of the wilderness and what it was like to travel with a wagon train. However, the romance went from 0 to 100 extremely quickly, and I found it unbelievable. Also, I was hoping that this would be a clean read, but there are a couple of sex scenes. It should also be noted that there’s a rape and attempted rape, although they thankfully are not explicit. Ultimately, I give this book 3.5, rounded up to 4 because I did genuinely care about the main character and her journey, both literally and figuratively.
Oh, and prepare for humongous amounts of sexism and misogyny due to the time period. Sooooo many insults directed at women.
This is the 2nd book i have read from this author and have just finished it and i so enjoyed it, this is the story of Grace and Tom brother and sister who go to extreme lengths to cross the country with a wagon train to reach her brother. Grace has to prove herself to the army Captain that she can survive the trip without holding up everyone. She also is running away from something and does not know if someone will come looking for her. This is such a lovely story of commitment, hardship, determination and bravery on behalf of Grace.
Read it and enjoy it, just waiting for the next book from this wonderful author.
My thanks as always to Netgalley for the early read and to Storm Publishing
This talented author has written a page turner. I enjoy historical fiction, and this story of Grace was intriguing. Wagon trains and the West...family and friends...enemies...mystery and intrigue...Even though Grace lied to get on the wagon train, she was forgiven and found the love of her life. I did not think the scenes toward the end, of the couple, needed to be inserted into historical fiction. That being said, I enjoyed this book. I liked this book. I hope to read more from this author. Thanks Netgalley.
I have enjoyed this novel very much.
A well written story about going West and I loved every minute of it.
The way Grace did it through I kind of didn't approve of but yet I can also see why she did it. I wish she'd have stood her ground but on 2nd thought I felt like they wouldn't have believed her.
Captain Randolph though he be a good man I felt that he was unfair to Grace. I felt that at the beginning he was very hard in her which wasn't right. But keep reading folks because later on we find out why and for some reason I really wasn't surprised. I kind of speculated on it but wasn't sure.
I actually thought she was the best one out of the train and held her own quite well.
Secrets eventually do come out though. I think for me, it would be hard and eat me up until I told someone or had to.
As I was reading this I pretended that I was a part of this first wagon train of the season and got to see all of these places. Beautiful places indeed because in 2005 I actually got to see a few of these places. The Great Divide is gorgeous and there was still snow on top. Magnificent!
I didn't want this novel to end at all! I spent most of the night reading it and just now finished it.
What an awesome adventure/journey! I highly recommend it. 5 stars because this story is still staying with me. I like and admired Grace very much. Such a stalwart, kind, compassionate and caring woman. We need more like her in this world.
I'm sure there were many men like Captain Randolph in real life too. He ended up growing on me for sure and certain.
My thanks to Netgalley and Storm publishing for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is not my usual genre and I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started, but I read this beautiful novel in a day and am so happy I did! From the first page I was pulled into the story. I truly cared about the protagonist, Grace, and found myself thinking of her for the few times I did have to put the book down. The historical detail was fascinating and the author’s writing style brought it to life and made it relatable even though it’s a different time period. I love this novel and will recommend it to others on publication day. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read in advance!
