Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for providing me with a free e-ARC of this highly anticipated new release!
I enjoyed the atmosphere of this book! Sunny and warm LA vibes. I did feel confused at all the LA references, but this lead to me researching the area and gaining a familiarity with it! The end of this story was sweet and unexpected and I was very satisfied with it.
I feel like the concept of this story was more intriguing than the first 3/4 of the book, however the last quarter was pretty great. Certain words and phrases were noticeably repeated, such as “heady” and the Daphne mentioning her Palisades upbringing.
Overall, this story was good, but not as strong as Serle’s other works. I do enjoy the core of this story though and am happy I was able to experience it.

This is contemporary romance combined with women's fiction and magical realism. And I absolutely loved it!
The story takes place in Los Angeles and features Daphne. The book starts with her first date with Jake. But we go back in time to see some of her previous dates/boyfriends and how long she was with each one. I don't normally love past/present storylines. But in this case her past experiences were so interesting and relevant.
I went into this book completely blind. And wow I was so surprised at what this title referred to. The book captivated me right from the start. I absolutely love magical realism. And this concept was so unique and fascinating. I was completely riveted.
This book does feature some Jewish rep (not a lot, but the heroine is Jewish, as are her parents and love interest).
Expiration Dates was at times very unpredictable. The author included a few wow moments that completely shocked me. The book is super interesting. But at times also quite serious. It was definitely emotional and heartbreaking. I adored her job and boss (Irina), and her best friends Hugo and Kendra. And the romance aspect was so good. I'm so happy that I chose this as my first book of 2024. It will be a story that I don't soon forget.

My first Rebecca Serle read! Loved the mix of magical realism with women's fiction. Romance is def a subplot tho so be warned if that's what your looking for!

rebecca serle's upcoming novel 'expiration dates' gave me what i wanted from one of her books, but felt a bit watered down compared to 'in five years' and 'one italian summer'.
this book follows daphne, a woman in her 30s who has an unusual quirk in that she always receives notes with the name of her next relationship and the length of time they will date, and the notes are always correct. however, when the story opens, she receives a note that just has 'jake' written on it, and daphne assumes this is the man who she will spend her life with. the novel follows her romance with jake, but also shows us flashbacks to other relationships, including a three-month relationship with hugo, her now best friend.
the book takes a twist in the middle that i initially found jarring, as it seemed to come out of left fiend, and becomes the central focal point of the second half the story. daphne & jake also had little to no chemistry, so it was hard to root for them throughout the story. there was a great message about living life to the fullest and not wasting the time you have, but i ultimately wanted a little more oomph from this one.
