The writing is a form of lyrical poetry with special emphasis on art. This is a new take on poetry where it is expressed in drawing and with less words.
I am not sure I like this form yet, since I like old school and more traditional forms of poetry. But I think this could grow on me!
Vermillion by Samantha Erron Gibbon is a beautiful book of art and poetry about the spirituality of motherhood, colorful and full of life.
Vermilion by Samantha Erron Gibbon is a stunningly visual depiction of nature and creation. While not wordy, the author lets the story unfold primarily through pictures, and the effect speaks louder than any spoken language could possibly achieve. This is a work that is completely original in modern literature, and I was immediately drawn to the unique form of storytelling. 3.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Querencia Press for an ARC.
to speak, write in our language is to see the world with different eyes. to say mother is to say mother but to say Okâwîmâw is to bring with all that our ancestors have experienced and our descendents deserve. I adore when Indigenous artists immerse their language into their art. to be Cree and Metis is to come from this land. in Vermilion, artist and poet Samantha Erron Gibbon depicts creation, land, birth, dreams, with such tenderness in words. each of the accompanying visual pieces offer an infinite amount of reflection. wholly beautiful.
thanks to querencia press and netgalley for my copy
The art in here is stunning and speaks to creation, nature and nurture in a way that's so warm and captivating that even without the words, you can get the whole story and appreciate it.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
Stunning images, beautiful artwork. A beautiful depiction of creation and motherhood in multiple languages. For me, the art speaks more than the writing. An ending that left me a bit confused but wanting more.
