This is an interesting concept for a book. For me, I would need to wait for my kids to get older to be able to actively participate in any of the conversation starters. I do think this would make a good activity to start a great family habit.
What an absolute gem of a book! This is just lovely, for coming together as a family, and spending quality time together. Perfect for gettin to know each other a little better, asking things you maybe wouldn’t normally think to. It’s a fun, light hearted, but sometimes more poignant and meaningful, little conversation starter - perfect for all members of the family, young and old.
Would definitely recommend.
With thanks to the publisher, and NetGalley for an e-ARC to read and review.
I loved this! 7 nights of family dinner a week sometimes conversations are stilted, that’s where this book picks up the slack! Not just for dinner but that’s where we will use this! Definitely a fun not ordinary conversation book!
My kids (6 & 8) really enjoyed the conversation prompts in the book, which opened the door to bigger conversations, family history and laughs. I received this as an electronic ARC, and have added the paper copy to my wish list so my family can enjoy all of the written activities together too!
I have been using this every day at the dinner table after a long day of work, school, activities, and avoiding the TV being on or tablets/phones out at the table.. and let me tell you. My son is giggling more during dinner, he doesn’t want to immediately run away to the tv or his iPad charging station.. my 1 year old is mimicking conversation and laughing when we do.. it’s beautiful, really. You’d think it’s just so simple but honestly, this book is an essential for any family!
The Daily Family Conversation Starter is jam-packed with fun family ideas -- some silly, some serious. Even though I'm with my kids all the time (hello, homeschooling!), sometimes our conversations can get a little predictable. I think this book would be fabulous for family road trips and maybe even the weekly call with the grandparents!
Darling book to encourage more conversations with family. I could see this working really well spiral bound and keeping it by the dinner table. Great ideas and siggestions for younger aged kids. Around 5-9 years or so.
This is a great book for anyone looking to start more conversations with their family. I can imagine having a physical copy of this book at the dinner table and having my kid pick a different prompt each night. Studies have shown the wildly positive effects of having dinner together (or any other meal) and I think this would be a great way to add to a family dinner. It would also be great for holiday meals, especially for families who want to direct the conversation rather than allow it to veer into unwanted topics. This would be a cute gift for any family, particularly those with kids who are 5-10 years old. If I were gifting it I'd include a note about how great their family is, some snacks, and maybe a board game too. This would be a fun addition to a public library as well.

Impressions: Goal: This book is a “map for guiding you (and your family) through stimulating conversations.” In using “storycatching,” you will learn to better share, listen, and connect. This book gives questions to prompt fun, even deep conversation. I love these prompts. My husband and I have found that in this busy season of life having questions on hand to ask each other starts a conversation that we might have been too tired or “busy” to have. We use an app in our marriage to start conversation, but I love that this book starts a family conversation. The questions are family-friendly and prompt a special bonding that can be shared at the dinner table, in the car, or wherever you are together. One thing that makes these prompts so great is they have helped our family to brainstorm ideas and life together.
I received an ARC of this book via the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
This is a good book to think out of the box for family conversations. It opened up other ideas to connect with kids of all ages. I like the different prompts each day; such as a quick game or drawing activity. It helps the family get to know each other better and just have fun. Going through this with I liked that it encourages families to use it however works best for them. I think a lot of this could work really well in a classroom too. It would have to be adapted since it is written for families. But that could be easily done.
I enjoyed doing some of these prompts with my kids. And will continue to do more in the future!
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. These opinions are completely my own.
I think most of these questions and challenges would be fabulous for a classroom setting. I'm already picturing a famous person debate. The only page I didn't like was the chubby Bunny due to the choking risk.
I love books that can cross age spans and create organic family conversations, especially around dinner time.
My family has had a lot of fun with a similar type of book, so I was hopeful that I would love this too and that we'd enjoy it.
While the ideas were fun and some of the questions could lead to good conversations, I struggled with how I could use this with my family. I find that often we need something to discuss during dinner, I was hoping this would be the thing that would help. However, there were questions that required other materials, or we'd have to write outside of the book. I think to make this book even better, turning it into something where families could record their answers and write within the book would have been great. There were also times when the questions seemed a bit too complex for my 5 year old.
This book might be for your if you are just getting started in finding ways to have conversations with your children but definitely make sure your kids are at an age where they will be able to understand the questions that are being asked.
Great book of 5 minute topics to discuss as a family. I like that it starts out with an agreement your family works through as to how to use it. I also like that the hard copy version has an area to check off topics you've already completed, so you can skip around if desired. This would be a great gift for Mother's or Father's Day or another holiday, or to get if you're interested in reconnecting.
I love an easy to follow and FUN conversation book! I read this in the car with a 10 year old and an 11 year old and they LOVED the questions. They LOVED the variety and the conversations that the questions started. When we arrived at our destination , the kids (and me too) were upset that our conversation with this book will need to end...for now! I've already recommended it to a colleague to use with her elementary age students who will be engaging in an enrichment writing activity -- these prompts are perfect to get their ideas flowing. I plan to purchase it to have on my dinner table and will gift to families in my social circle as well. The variety of depth in questions/prompts is top notch -- some are silly, some are deep ...and everything in between. Some require movement, all require creativity thinking. It's a winning book for sure and should be on everyone's dinner table....or in their car so that when grown ups and younger siblings are waiting for the older sibling's practice to end, there's something to keep us all entertained and connected!
An absolutely delightful book to help get you out of your conversation rut. While this is aimed towards families I think it could easily be adapted to be used in classrooms and just in general for people looking to improve their conversation skills. I really deeply appreciated how neutral the prompts were while also being fun and dynamic, a family from any background would be able to pick this book up and find prompts that work for them.
The Daily Family Conversation Starter was not exactly what I was expecting. It was better than expected. I love that not only is this written to take only 5 minutes of your time each day, the daily conversation starters are just that....great ways to start a deeper conversation and get to know the members of your family better AND in an entertaining way that is relevant for anyone of any age. I think this book could be used not only for families, but for any friend relationship. Or even to use while dating. (At least most of the questions would be great to use to get to know anyone...just change the word "family" to "friend" or whatever you like before answering).
One extra thing this book does is to help you set ground rules before starting to answer the questions. This is a sure way to help everyone understand what this is all about and to know what to expect while working through the book.
This would be a great gift to give anyone. I would highly recommend it.
Thank you Harper celebrate and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange of an honest review.
It was a good book, one of a kind but I don't feel it will be useful for all families. Especially my family because we all talk a lot. Might work for those who do not really have time for each other, and these exercises might help them in bonding.
Exactly what we needed as a family during dinner! Engaging, unique prompts that involve more than just older kids.
Whether commuting together, sitting at the dinner table, or preparing for bedtime, The Daily Family Conversation Starter invites you to share, discover, and laugh together as you create family memories that last a lifetime.
This books is full of varied discussion topics and activities--there are lots of different types and topics covered. It's probably not something you'll be pulling out just to fill a few spare minutes, though. For one, it's addressed to the children of the family, so they're really supposed to run the show. But the topics and activities are often more involved than simple discussion--you're drawing or acting things out or researching things, etc. It's almost always going to take a little bit of time and dedicated focus, rather than being something simple and quick you can chat about at the dinner table or while waiting at the doctor's office. That being said, I actually think a lot of the suggestions are worthwhile. So often books like this are filled with silly things no one really cares to spend time on, but I feel the quality of the suggestions here is higher. As long as you're prepared for this taking more time to execute, I think you'll be quite happy with it.
