Random In Death is the 58th novel in J.D. Robb's "Eve Dallas" series.I just couldn't stop listening!
The author's fast paced story-telling always has me addicted from beginning to end. What I especially loved was Roarke's constant support of Eve. And last but not least, Susan Ericksen's talent to bring these characters to life. Great listen!
Yet another amazing Eve Dallas story. I adore this world that JD Robb has created. I loved getting to see more of Nadine and her beau in this one. I am loving seeing their relationship evolving. I am always so amazed at how engaging this series is even after 50+ books. I love seeing these characters grow through all the books and all the stories. As always Susan Erickson did a fantastic job with this audiobook.
a book about someone murdering teenagers is not necessarily something I think I would enjoy but I did enjoy this one!
This was my first JD Robb and it won't be my last.
I enjoyed the characters and would like to see them in another setting.
When you’ve read 58 In Death books, you’re a hardcore fan! I think the previous book was close to my fav of the entire series. I went into this one with high expectations. I really enjoyed the first half of the book, setting the scene and getting into the investigation. The ending fell flat for me compared to the beginning of the book but it was still a solid installment in the series. I was late reviewing this one (all apologies) so I’m happy to jump immediately to the next one!
*thanks to MacMillan Audio and NetGalley for the audiobook copy
This book took me forever to listen to. I was not a fan of the subject matter of teens dying so that was part of the problem for me. Also, I am from NY and relatively young and the lingo did not make sense to me, it seemed less me the author was trying too hard to get the teen lingo down and it just felt off. Eve Dallas is a bad a** so what’s not to love there, and I was happy with the way the investigation went in the end. The further I got in to the book, the better, but the teens lingo was hard to get past for me. I enjoyed the ending, and was interested in the way they got there, but this book wasn’t a hit for me. Thank you NetGalley for the arc!
When I started this book, I didn't realize that it was a later title in an extensive series. So there were many characters and previous events which at times made the story slightly confusing. However, the plot intrigued me and I enjoyed the story. A police detective searches for a killer who injects random girls with a fatal dose of chemcials.
I was given an ARC of Random in Death by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

An utterly engaging thriller. It had dynamic characters, fantastic plot, just the right amount of "fluff" to keep the story from being dry. My only complaint is that this is part of a series (#58! I had no idea) and so a lot of the relationships are already developed and we miss that part. Also the "futuristic slang" was a grating.
The narration was excellent. One artist did a fantastic job voicing so many characters and bringing them to life. Probably one of the best narrators I have heard.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for my advance copy of this audiobook
Another great Eve Dallas thriller! This time there is not any connection between the victims except for their age. I also liked that some of the smaller characters were featured more often and had a bigger part in the story.
I was really caught up in this storyline since it is something original. I find the main characters are still kept fresh even though this is the 58th(?) book in the series. Crime, murder, romance what else can anyone ask for?
"Random in Death" by J.D. Robb, available in audiobook format, offers a thrilling and suspenseful ride through a futuristic crime thriller, showcasing Robb's trademark blend of mystery, action, and romance.

Random in Death is book 58 in the In Death series. 58. That’s a pretty amazing feat all in itself. I took a break from the series for a little while (at about book 53 I think) but then came back to it last year and binged the books I’d missed. Now I’m right back into it.
I suppose it’s theoretically possible to start with this book – it does cover a discrete police investigation – but I suspect most of the nuance would be lost. That said, I think one could skip quite a few of the middle books if one was inclined and be just fine with this one.
Eve and Roarke remain happily married and banging regularly; McNab and Peabody are still happy and together; Mavis and Leonardo (with Bella) join the story, as do Charles and Louise and Dr Charlotte Mira – along with more important roles for Nadine Furst and her lover, Jake Kinkade, lead singer from Avenue A – and the rest of the Murder Squad at Cop Central. Knowing who all these people are and watching how they’ve grown throughout the series is half the fun of it.
At an all-ages Avenue A gig, a 16-year-old girl is murdered. Given she dies in Jake Kinkade’s arms, Eve is called in straight away. It quickly becomes clear that the murderer is an incel type and he won’t stop at just one so it’s a race against the clock before more victims end up on Morris’s slab at the morgue.
I’ve always enjoyed how J.D. Robb can make me care about characters quickly and Random in Death is no different in that regard. The family of the murder victim and their devastation got to me straight away.
The In Death series has a romance in it but it is not a romance series as such, not anymore. Now it’s a police procedural set in the near future (with many cool things) with more than a small helping of “slice of life” scenes from Eve and Roarke and their increasingly broad found family. I’ve grown away from police main characters in romance to a large degree but I think that the In Death series is set in the future (albeit only 40 years or so into the future) helps me here; they’re even farther removed from real life.
There’s not a lot more I can say about Susan Eriksen’s narration. She is the voice of the In Death series for me. Even were I to read a book in the series, I would hear her voicing all the characters. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword; she’s so closely associated with In Death for me that I can’t listen to her narrating anything else without thinking of Eve and Roarke and everyone else. On the other hand, she’s just fantastic with this series. She has a large cast of characters of all ages to play with, plenty of accents and the opportunity to grow many of those characters as are they are recurring in the series. She manages to keep all the accents straight as well. Charles and Louise may not appear in all that many books, but when they’re there, their voices are the same from book to book.
Random In Death has an evil criminal, sympathetic victims, an engrossing (if sometimes extremely lucky and possibly quite improbable) investigation and fantastic characters. While it’s not the best entry into the series, it is very solid and is far from my least favourite. Audio is generally my preferred medium for In Death books because Susan Eriksen is so good and this one did not disappoint.

As always J. D. Robb has done it again. This book as well as the whole series is just out of this world. She continually impresses us with Roarke and Eve and their marriage and how the both can make it work and also work together.
As usual the sory line and plot is amazing and just flows. This series and this book is one of my favorites.
This book receives 5 stars.
I had very high hopes for Random in Death by J.D. Robb. I listened to the ARC audio of the book. I did not connect to the narrator which made my experience with the story harder. I did not like the futuristic theme of the book. Unfortunately, this was not my cup of tea.
When it comes to police procedural novels, even those set in the not too distant future, J.D. Robb, has been my go-to author since I read her first book. This was the first time I did enjoy it as an audiobook, however. Susan Ericksen does a commendable job in depicting all the different characters voices, and their own individual traits and characteristics that I, as a reader, always associated with them. I felt that the storyline was relevant to young people, be it IRL or in the future. A typical J. D. book, with plenty of plot twists that also lets the reader, or listener, in this case, visit with past and newer characters, and check on how they are doing in their lives. My next move is to find out which other audiobooks of Ms. Robb, that Susan Ericksen has narrated, and check them out.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this audiobook supplied to me by the publisher through NetGalley.
Book #58. The journey with Lieutenant Eve Dallas continues, and it just gets better and better. This series never disappoints, and this installment is no exception. Eve Dallas is one of my favorite female protagonists. She is tough, loyal, fair, and a survivor.
In this chapter of Eve’s story, she is called to the scene of a teenage girl’s death. It quickly becomes apparent that she was murdered. The scene is a concert venue with a lot of witnesses who didn’t see anything but the concert they were attending. As the investigation progresses, Lieutenant Dallas realizes that there are a lot of pieces to the puzzle, but none of them seem to fit together. It also becomes evident that this crime may be random, and that makes it terrifying.
This story has all of the hallmarks of a great “In Death” novel: Roarke - Eve’s husband, Peabody - her partner, and the amazing cast of characters I have come to love over 58 stories. I’ve said it before and I will say it again - picking up a J.D. Robb book is like spending time with family and good friends. The bonus is the great story and investigation that accompanies it.
This was the first time I had the audiobook version of one of these stories. Susan Ericksen is a terrific narrator! Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this fantastic book! I also purchased a copy because I own the whole series. This latest book is out now. I’m looking forward to my next meeting with Lieutenant Dallas in the fall. If you love thrillers, mysteries, and police procedurals, start this series now. It is amazing!
OMG!! This one, was an addicting listen. The narrator, Susan Ericksen masterfully portrayed the man characters, giving them their unique voice and inflections. It was brilliant!!
This is an addicting crime thriller where Lt. Eve Dallas is fighting against time to catch the culprit before he goes out and picks his next victim from a very deadly toxic mix of substances.. This book kept me on the edge of my seat, and it highlighted the ruthless randomness of each crime committed. This is a must listen for all crime thriller lovers.
JD Robb has created another suspenseful mystery that keeps you intrigued throughout the book. I always enjoy the In Death books and look forward to seeing Dallas and her family and friends. Happy reading!
I love this series and have for a long time so I am super happy I got to review it! I love how J.D. Robb brings all her characters together in the story and how they support and help each other. That being said this unsub - wow fuck him. Incel much? As usual, Dallas saves the day, which I can't get enough of! Can't wait for the next in the series!
Random in Death is the next book in the In Death series and I cannot tell you how much these books give me life!!! I adore this series. I love the characters, I love the mystery, and I adore the narrator.
Random in Death features a type of crime that is truly scary-totally random murder. Trying to figure out who the killer is when there is no connection to the victims is a challenge, even for Eve. Jake Kincaid is back in this edition, along with Nadine, Quilla, and Jamie. Of course, Roarke, Peabody, Feeney, and McNab are there as well too. This was certainly one of those "all hands on deck" crimes.
These characters have so much meaning to me. Its like peeking in on friends or people I know IRL. I'm so attached and invested in this series. If you haven't started it, you simply need to drop all your other reads and grab Naked in Death (book 1). Seriously, I can't say enough great things about the series, and Random in Death just continued the amazing journey.
Susan Ericksen narrates the series and she is simply one of the BEST narrators! She brings this series to life with her voice acting. Simply Brilliant!
I had all but given up on this series. In fact the one prior to this sits on the pile of unread books in my bathroom. J.D.Robb is seriously my favorite author i haven't missed any of her books. This one brought back the love of reading to me.
