This was my first J.D. Robb story so I had no idea what to expect. If you have read other 𝙄𝙣 𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 books, then you will probably enjoy this one. I was not really a fan of the “futuristic” language that was repetitively thrown around, it was kind of annoying. The narrator was also throwing me off. I wasn’t a fan of the voices she used for some of the characters. It made it hard to get through. But I do like police procedurals and crime stories, and the plot was interesting. As the story went on I did become more intrigued. The banter between some of the characters was humorous. Thank you Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for a copy of this ALC.
This book was compelling from beginning to end. The author, as always, does a great job of detailing the crime and the investigation. The perpetrator is slowly revealed, but their horrible crimes splash across the page immediately from the beginning of the book. As Eve Dallas begins to peel away the layers of this crime, the reader will be transfixed, both by the complexity of the investigation and the potential for more crimes that would surely be coming.
The characters just flame to life, and the personalities of the victims, their friends, and the perpetrator are so well described.
I listened to the audiobook as well, and the narrator Susan Ericksen portrayed teenagers in such an authentic way. She was able to expertly portray drama, horror, grief, sadness, and love in such a powerful way.
Eve Dallas's personal life is subtly layered throughout the book, but never takes over from the crime and investigation.
This thriller is horrifying, enthralling, and captivating throughout. J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) has doneit again. She has turned out another quality book that will keep you mesmerized.
I received a free copy of the audiobook from MacMillan Audio. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.
Jenna’s parents had finally given her permission to go to a club to see Avenue A, on the one night a year the club opens for those underage; her plan was to slip them her demo if she got the chance. She meets eyes with Jake, the guitarist and seconds later feels a prick in her arm.
She feels sick and not herself and ends up in the alley where Jake has gone to get fresh air. Knowing that something isn’t right, Jake’s girlfriend calls her friend Lieutenant Eve Dallas.
Those in the club were interviewed and the lab results show she had a toxic substance in her body and that the needle was also infected. Is it possible that the attack on Jenna is random or are others at risk as well? Lieutenant Dallas is determined to get to the bottom of what happened to Jenna before it happens to someone else.
I was introduced to J. D. Robb books by my mother years ago, and initially had no interest in reading them, but eventually decided to try one. I’ve read a number of J. D. Robb books since and have enjoyed them and would recommend them to others.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to an ALC of this novel. #NetGalley #RandominDeath
Random in Death (audio book)by J.D. Robb is an Eve Dallas novel narrated by Susan Erickson. First off let me say Susan Erickson did a marvelous job of bringing the characters to life. This was my first Eve Dallas novel so I found myself at a bit of a disadvantage, however that did not take away from the story which I enjoyed immensely. If you're into Eve Dallas novels then you are in for a treat!
I always have the same issue with Eve Dallas mysteries. I don't really enjoy the banter between the characters when the crimes are first discovered, but I become engaged in the mystery once I get past the first few chapters. This happened with this book as well. I loved the crime/mystery and thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.
I both read and listened to this book, switching between the two mediums. I enjoyed the narrator well enough, but when I had a choice I preferred reading over listening. It just was more engaging when I read the story and then listened.
I give it a solid 3.5/5 with the thought that if I hadn't already read so many of the previous books in the series, the opening character introductions wouldn't feel as repetitive. If you are looking for a light mystery series, I highly recommend this series of books.
I was excited to receive a complimentary copy of the audiobook for Random in Death by Nora Roberts from NetGalley. It was narrated by Susan Erickson. Opinions in this review are completely my own.
I love all J.D. Robb books. She does an amazing job of writing characters that you want to be friends with. I enjoy the banter between Roark and Eve, Eve and Peabody. I have never read one of these books where I did not rate it at least 4 stars. I may have rated this one higher but I did not like the narrator. In my opinion, the voices she used for the characters just changed my opinion of the characters that I have loved for 50 plus books. I absolutely did not like the Irish accent she used for Roarke and the voices she used for Eve and Peabody especially.
If I could have bought a print or digital copy of this book, I would have because I did not enjoy the narrator at all. I thought maybe it was related to it being the first audiobook I'd ever listened to, but then I listened to another one right after this and it was much better. I would not read another audiobook with this narrator. I highly recommend reading the book rather than listening to it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the Audiobook ARC!
Another entry into the Eve Dallas series, good and mostly predictable.
It hit all the right notes, dipped into some very creepy incel territory, and was an engaging story in my ear while I ran errands and took care of chores around the house. This is #58 in a series that isn't breaking any new ground, but that's kind of comforting. You know Dallas and Peabody will get the murderer in the end, we get a killer POV chapter or several towards the end of the book, and there will be a lot of detective work along the way. A futuristic 'Law and Order' in book or audio format, revisiting characters you know as they track down a killer.
This one wasn't my favorite, but definitely not near the bottom of the stack, either.
Part of the storyline does involve incel culture, rape, and teenage death, so be warned if that's an automatic no for you. But if you like this series and are okay with those in passing, it's a good one to pick up!
This was a great audiobook to listen to. I loved the thrill of solving the mystery of who was murdering these young women and why. I enjoyed Eve's tenacity to find the killer and stop him before he hit again. What I especially loved was Roarke's constant support of Eve. And last but not least, Susan Ericksen's talent to bring these characters to life. Great listen!
Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook and reader copy of Random in Death by J. D. Robb in exchange for an honest review. It's been awhile since I read this series and have missed a bunch, but it was still good. There were some new characters and old ones and young girls dying of a fatal cocktail.
Yes! Yes! Yessss!!! This is how an audiobook should be done! You take a well written plot with amazing character development then turn it over to a narrator who makes sure each individual character gets their own voice and enhances the character development that the author wrote! You can close your eyes and allow the story to flow through your mind as if you are actually standing among the characters living, feeling and enduring all that they do! I am so amazed that each book in the In Death series has a fresh and intriguing take on crime, the characters involved, their lives and the city that they are all living in. I do recommend that you read the books in order as you will get loads and loads of backstory, but you will also gain days and days of entertainment. I am simply in awe of authors who have written a series that has books that number in the double digits and manage to continue to be fresh, but this series is well over 50 books and stays fresh and relevant with the story lines. I am always first in line for the audiobook version of this series as it is my number one always must listen to series! If you haven't tried it out yet, you should. Between the creative genius of JD Robb and the creative performance of Susan Ericksen, you will not be sorry!
I will start by saying that the beginning of the Audiobook was cringy due to the language used by some of the teenaged characters, so it took me longer to get into the story but when I did the story was faced paced and kept me enthralled till the very end. J.D Robb did a good job with writing this story. The narrator may need to be rethought but all in all not bad.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a chance to review this audiobook before publication.
I only made it about 10% into the audiobook because of the very offensive accent used for a POC female character. This character works at the club where the first murder occurs. The narrator is clearly a white woman trying to sound "urban." I highly recommend an edit.
Another clever, fast-paced murder mystery, this time featuring an underage chemical genius who targets young girls randomly. Eve and the team crack the case, this time with a focus on Nadine and her rockstar boyfriend. Good on audio narrated by Susan Ericksen. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
A fun puzzling mystery to try to solve before a killer strikes again!
I will start with the good, I really liked the mystery behind this and the case Eve is working. It was a unique spin that I hadn’t read yet, and this book had so much potential to be really crazy good! Now the bad…. The teen lingo in this was terrible. The first half of the book I would get completely taken out of the story by all the crazy words and inflections and trying to figure out what the heck they were even saying half the time. I get that this book is supposed to be set more futuristically, and the author was trying to create new? Words to go with that, but it totally took me away from what I wanted to actually be reading. And I’m in the total minority here, but I was not a fan of the narrator in the slightest. I may have been better off reading this in its physical version vs the audio.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my ALC, in exchange for my honest feedback!
I was thrilled to get to listen to Susan Erickson narrate this new installment of the, ‘In Death’ series
penned by J.D. Robb, alter ego of the prolific Nora Robert’s. While I love the books, there is just
an energy that comes from the brilliant narration by Susan that makes this one of my favorite
series of all time.
Random in Death finds the crew looking for a specific type of killer with random teenage
girls, yet the circumstances of their lives are not matching up with the murder cops initial ideas.
There are some moments in the story that are quite poignant for the listener. The Author has a
brilliance in her descriptions of her ‘families,’ McNabb & Peabody are almost completely done with
their grand domicile, Roarke’ and Eve are teaming up to catch a killer, and the emotional toll it
takes has Somerset actually connecting with Eve in kindness. The entire crew find the crimes
particularly personally motivating. As we move along, one Father will break down completely
upon learning he really did not know his son at all. He must then decide whether to stay and try to
help him, or walk away to save himself.
I was satisfied with the conclusion. I enjoyed the usual characters. I highly recommend the book
to everyone. This book would be good as a stand alone because the characters are well explained
in each installment.
My thanks to MacMillan Audio for a digital cop of this book for review purposes.
"Random in Death" is the 58th book in author J. D. Robb's "In Death" series.
(Really!)
The book is also a standalone read.
The book's premise was intriguing:
A young girl is stabbed with a dirty needle at a concert and dies minutes later.
More similar deaths follow.
When Lieutenant Eve Dallas investigates these suspicious deaths, law enforcement races the clock to keep an aggrieved incel from targeting and killing more teenage girls at crowded events.
Even though this book was a standalone read, I felt that I would have enjoyed the book more had I read the earlier books in the series.
Also, I was a bit put off by the author's "nonbinary" reference to suspects. (Huh?)
Overall, the book was fast-paced and well-written.
I listened to the audiobook read by Susan Ericksen, who did an outstanding job with the narration.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars
This installment of the In Death series was great! I always enjoy each book in this series, but I was really invested in this mystery/case, and I genuinely did not have a clue as to who the murderer was before the reveal. The case was as horrifying as it was compelling, and it definitely felt timely with what is going on in the world today. I also really loved some of the character moments we got to see, especially between Nadine and Jake (and of course Eve and Roarke.) And its always nice to see returning/recurring characters from previous books, like Jamie and Quilla. I have read every book in the In Death series, but this was the first one I listened to on audio, and it really enhanced the experience for me! The narration was great! 55+ books in, and JD Robb is still going strong. I highly recommend this book, especially the audio!
First, it’s obvious for my readers to know that I am a big fan of this series. After all, Random in Death is the 58 book in the In Death series. You don’t make it this far in a series if you don’t enjoy it. The last few books I was starting to get annoyed with Eve. I really fell for her take charge attitude and no BS or sh$ts to give. She’s softened and changed in the 58 books… just like a person would over the years especially after getting married and settling into that. However, I felt like she was leaning a little too hard on the hubs and wasn’t holding her own as much. I really felt like she redeemed herself with Random. Roarke was still there but he wasn’t a forced in partner and frequently taking Peabody’s spot. He was more like a cheerleader this time. I liked it.
I am very curious, where has our infamous chocolate thief been? It’s been a few books I believe since they have been on seen robbing Eve of her goods. It always makes me laugh and I’m very curious who the culprit is! I adore the supporting characters and keep waiting for McNabb to nab Peabody already. I’ll continue to enjoy the series and eagerly away every single title. Keep it up JD Robb! I really don’t know what I’ll do when this series concludes or somehow ends. I’ll honestly be devastated, like I lost my best friends!
Random in Death (An Eve Dallas Novel) by J. D. Robb
Narrated by Susan Ericksen
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Mystery & Thrillers
Expected Publication Date: January 23, 2024
Random in Death is the 58th book in the In Death series by by J. D. Robb and features Detective Eve Dallas. I had not read the previous books, and while I found that a challenge at the beginning of the book, I ultimately enjoyed this as a standalone mystery.
Random in Death takes place in future New York so the sights are familiar but the language and technology have evolved. Just like today, there is slang, and it took a little while to figure out what some of the words mean.
Initially I thought this was a young adult or teen book because the story opens before the first crime is committed and we get to meet the victim and her friends. Listening to their conversations was very annoying, especially since I was not familiar with the author’s format. Once the murder was actually committed and we get to meet Detective Dallas things got going and a lot more interesting for me.
Overall, I thought this was a great story. Having it set in the future gave it an interesting dynamic. I enjoyed following the police in solving this crime. This was actually a quick read and very fast paced!
The narration by Susan Ericksen was great! I loved how she brought the story to life!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Random in Death was a fantastic addition to the In Death series. If you’ve never heard of the series, there are 60+ books when including the novellas. They all have the same main characters. Each book is a new case for Lieutenant Eve Dallas who runs a homicide department in New York City. She is married to Roarke, a wealthy businessman with amazing computer skills. Both grew up with very difficult childhoods. Their love is something that I want for myself and is a part of it, but not the main focus of the story. It’s a crime thriller with a romance/love subplot. Over the series the number of supporting characters has grown and honestly all of them have a place in my heart.
Honestly you could start the series here and understand what is happening because the author, J.D. Robb, is great at refreshing previously mentioned information that is significant to the current story. However, to truly connect with all the characters I highly recommend starting from the beginning. I found the series in early 2023 and have made it through twice this year. I really did enjoy the series that much.
The series is set in the future, but not so far out that the world is unrecognizable. As with any futuristic story the world has grown and so have weapons, drugs, with cars capable of self-driving and even some flying, terminology, etc. It’s just enough to take me out of my current world and put me in Eve’s.
Random in Death will pull on your heart strings. I am not a crier, but there is something about death involving children and/or teens that pulls at your heart strings. This case was harder to solve because as the synopsis says there were no obvious clues. It kept me guessing through most of the book!
I, also, wanted to note that I absolutely love this narrator. She has made each character their own person. You can tell by her voice exactly who she is referring to or who is talking. It’s really helped me to visual each character!
I have to thank MacMillan Audio and NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook. I, also, want to note that I had actually already preordered this audiobook before receiving this copy.
