After loving The Silent Patient, disliking the Maidens, I am happy to report I enjoyed Michaelides new book, The Fury.
The Fury is full of twists and turns. We don't even know who the narrator is until a few chapters in. There is a lot of back and forth with this one. When you think you know whats going on, you're wrong.
I enjoyed this one. It was uniquely told, but that caused some confusion sometimes. I like that this had short chapters and ended each chapter in a way that made me as the reader want to keep reading. I felt like the first few chapters had a lot of potential and I was immediately intrigued. As the story went on, I was still intrigued but some of the twists seemed very unrealistic.
I really liked the narration. I thought the narrator did a great job with this unreliable narrator.
I typically enjoy this author but this one left me a bit confused and disappointed. Loved the setting and the characters swirling like The Fury winds thru this Greek Isle but the narrator’s continual fourth wall breakage and campiness were a turn off for me. The end was a bit feverish and I’m not sure I entirely got it. That said it wasn’t a bad read just….a bit confounding. The narrator was great though, fun choices and affectations that kept me engaged.
I will admit I did not enjoy this as much as the Silent Patient. It was a fun read though. I was never sure where Alex was going with this book. Alex Jennings did a great job as narrator.
5 stars doesn’t do this book justice. OMG doesn’t do this book justice. Alex Michaelides does it again. Gives us a thrilling, heart gripping, mystery story that has so many twists and turns you never know where you’re headed.
Elliot Chase was able to keep me interested the entire time with his narrative. To get a glimpse and telling of each character from his narration was very interesting.
I absolutely loved the little glimpse of The Silent Patient we get in the epilogue. Very well done!!
Thank you Celadon Books, Alex Michaelides, and NetGalley for this eARC of The Fury.
Thank you, NetGalley!!
This book sounded so good but I didn't like the way it was written. It was just the main character telling us a story that was so boring. This is on me though, I didn't like Silent Patient and the way it was written so I'm not sure what I was thinking when picking up this book.
I loved this one! I swapped between reading and listening to the audiobook, and Alex Jennings does an incredible job. His narration fits our main character perfectly, and his voice is so easy to listen to that you won’t want to stop. This book is full of twists and turns, on top of well-developed characters with their own unique motivations. The majority takes place on a dreamy private island in Greece, so if you are wanting a book to escape into for the month of January, this is it!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
I have enjoyed all three of the author’s books and he is now reached the status of “must read” for me. His experience as a screenwriter is evident and his books are perfectly paced for me. I see the book clearly while reading and love his style. I will be recommending this book often. Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books.for the advanced access for review.
From the author of Silent Patient and The Maidens, I rank this second amongst the 3. The Silent Patient in audiobook still holds first place for me.
The Fury is a story about a reclusive ex-movie star, Lana Farrar who invites her friends to her private Greek Island every Easter for a getaway. This one trip will end with one of them being murdered. We get an unreliable narrator, Elliott, who tells us what went down and secrets are exposed little by little throughout. You do not know who is murdered, and you don't know why either. You don't even know if Elliot is really telling the truth. I enjoyed the guessing game I was put on while listening to this book and the ending definitely caught me off guard which was awesome. Super entertaining, and lots of drama. Feels very much like an Agatha Christie novel
I highly recommend sticking with it - it’s a slow start for sure. I also highly recommend the audiobook too - took me a minute to get into it but wow was it a fun read!
I was so excited for this book because of all the hype. I wanted to love it but unfortunately it wasn’t for me. I felt like the storyline was all over the place-there was TOO MUCH background that it was just overkill. The audio did not hold my attention and made it hard for me to enjoy.
Absolutely brilliant! I enjoyed every moment of this novel. It takes real talent to include the reader. This one has tons of twists and turns and perspectives written in a different way that really brings this together.
As I loved his first book and was shocked that I did not love his sophomore piece, I was Oh, So, eager to read this new, third book. From book one to book three is a gap of unenjoyable readiing which craters out in The Fury. I don't enjoy a narrator who is irritating in character and narration, and Alex told us how to feel about each character and gave us no 'imagination' of our own. What is a mystery and a suspense when you are told how to feel about what you hear?
“A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex-movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder.”
Nothing is as it seems. Expect an unreliable narrator and lots of twists! The story is told by Elliot, a friend of the ex-movie star. The type of storytelling was a little too slow for me and I found myself bored until 70%. After this, I was enthralled and couldn’t stop listening. The book also mentions Nova Scotia, where I live, so that was cool!
I was obsessed with The Silent Patient, but this one just wasn’t for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this Advance Reader Copy. All opinions are my own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
3.5/5 STARS
Genre: Thriller/Mystery
I listened to this on audio and enjoyed the narrator, his voice was perfect for the vibe of the book!
This was not my favorite book by this author. I think if not for the audiobook, it would have taken me a while to finish it. It is a very slow paced thriller. If you read The Silent Patient, it is the same writing style, an unreliable narrator with a twist at the end (but not as good). For me, the plot was a little underwhelming. The premise sounds great… a murder while vacationing on a Greek island. It did pick up towards the middle and I of course liked the twist just fell a little short for me.
I recommend listening to it!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio/Celadon Books Audio for the audiobook!
"The Fury" by Alex Michaelidis, narrated by the incredibly talented Alex Jennings, is an audiobook that's like a decadent Greek holiday with a side of murder mystery. Imagine Agatha Christie decided to throw a party on a private Greek island, and you're halfway there. Jennings, with his extensive theatrical background, brings the characters to life with such finesse that you'll feel like you're sunbathing on the beach, overhearing gossip from the next umbrella over.
The story centers around Lana Farrar, a reclusive ex-movie star, and her glamorous Easter getaway with friends on a private Greek island. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, hold onto your sunhats, because this dream vacation turns into a nightmare when one of the guests ends up dead. The narrative, delivered masterfully by Jennings, is a delightful mix of celebrity glitz, suspenseful twists, and a dash of old-school whodunit charm.
The way Michaelidis weaves this tale is nothing short of brilliant. It's a gripping story that plays out like a high-stakes game of Clue under the Mediterranean sun. The narrator, Elliot Chase, promises a story unlike any you've heard, and boy, does he deliver! Jennings' portrayal of Elliot is so captivating, you'll hang on to his every word as he guides you through a labyrinth of secrets, betrayals, and old grudges.
What sets "The Fury" apart is its ability to be both a gripping thriller and a fascinating character study. The characters are as vivid as the picturesque Greek setting, each with their own complexities and motives. And just when you think you've got it all figured out, Michaelidis throws in a twist that will have you gasping in surprise.
In conclusion, "The Fury" is an audiobook that's as thrilling as it is entertaining. It's perfect for fans of suspenseful narratives and character-driven stories. Alex Jennings' narration is the cherry on top, making this an audiobook you won't want to pause. So grab your headphones, pour yourself a glass of ouzo, and prepare for a journey to a sun-drenched island where secrets run as deep as the blue Aegean Sea.
I loved The Silent Patient, it’s one of the books that got me back into reading. The Maidens was a letdown after that, and I would say this book falls somewhere in between.
This was a slooooow burn. I was intrigued by a murder on a desolate island, very And Then There Were None-esque. Unfortunately we kept waiting for something to happen. The narrator insisted that we needed to know all of this information to understand what happened.
The ending had a lot of twists, and I was very surprised by it. It didn’t blow my mind but it was an entertaining end to what otherwise was tooo slow of a book.
I both read and listened to the audiobook, I thought the narrator was a good choice for this character.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
My last read of 2023 and a much hyped one by the author of The Silent Patient.
The Fury is the story of a group of friends, including a famous actress and our narrator the writer, on an island when one is murdered.
This was not the book for me. It started slow so I pushed through thinking I’d like the second part better, which it did pick up and hold more twists.
I found the narrator intolerable, which was somewhat the point, but it can make for a difficult read when you don’t connect with the characters or the story.
Thankfully the audio kept me engaged and I enjoyed the narrator. If I hadn’t had the audio, I wouldn’t have finished the book, but I was able to listen to this one better than reading it.
Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for making advance copies available.
This audiobook flew by, but I really wish that hadn’t been the case. I wanted to know more and hear more, but it all went by so quickly. Loved the format of a “play” with an omniscient narrator! All in all, I really liked this and wanted more.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced audiobook copy.
Ugh, what can I say. I hated the narrator of this book. I was bored listening to him.
As for the story. I have to say this is my least favorite book from Alex Michaelides. The plot and placing were all over the place and I felt the story was extremely slow.
Character is destiny. ~ Heraclitus
Take a trip to a Greek isle. Get away from the rainy, cold days in London. What could go wrong? Everything if there is a murderer in your midst. Or, is there?
I absolutely loved this one on audio. The narration has a conversational tone, as if you and he are sitting in a pub together as he relates his tale. With Michaelides you can expect Greek myth undertones like Agamemnon and the Furies. There were classic quotes from Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway, Edward Albee, and (one of my faves) Tennessee Williams. Watch for crossover with the prior two novels and even a line about Whittington (a book I read with my grandson a couple of months ago). The twists may give you whiplash. Some have labelled this as a slow read. I found it to be riveting. Zipped through it as quickly as I could.
A big thank you to Macmillan Audio and Celadon Books for both an audio and digital ARCS in exchange for an honest review. Release date is January 16, 2024.
Alex Michaelides is back with The Fury, a novel full of surprises.
"A reclusive former actress invites some friends to her private Greek island to escape the English weather. A storm blows in and a person is found murdered. Now the group must discover who the killer is."
The story is narrated by Elliot, a quintessential unreliable narrator. Elliot will tell you part of the story - or what you think is the story - and then tell you that's what he wanted to happen but something else did. You never know what the real story is.
There are plenty of unlikable characters here. It's hard to find someone to pull for.
The narrator, Alex Jennings, is perfect for this character. I believed I was listening to Elliot the whole time.
There are lots of surprises and twists. The ending was unexpected. I liked seeing Theo pop up again.
Fans of his first two books should enjoy this one
