I gave this book a shot but found it to be very dry and confusing to read. I was looking for a more approachable read on this topic, but found this too trend much more philosophical/academic. Did not finish.

This year, I've been on a journey to read as many feminist books as possible, and I thought this book would be perfect. But after finishing it only a couple of days ago, I've already forgotten most of what this book talked about. This was a very messy book in that it was disorganized and didn't feel like the author was making a coherent argument. I also think this book relied too heavily on quotes and references to other feminist works, without insightfully elaborating on them.

If you've ever wondered what a woman means when she says "I hate men" this book explains it exactly. I had to keep putting the book down to relax because it was continuously making me angry that I have to be a woman in this society. As someone who has been in abusive relationships in the past, I would recommend looking into trigger warnings and taking care of yourself while reading this. The chapter about narcisstic abuse/physical abuse really hit close to home and made me realize how lucky I am to be in a relationship with someone that sees me as an equal. I think this book should be required reading to all straight cis men so they can understand and unlearn the behaviors society has instilled in them. I can't wait to read everything this author writes, she knows what she's talking about.

Very informative. I appreciate when sources are sited for statistics and real life stories recounting the issues that are being spoken of

I absolutely loved this book and will be reading everything Mona Chollet has to offer. I think she is realistic, poignant, well-researched, and just an overall good author. This book was no different and it made me glad I’m a lesbian.

A must-read for anyone interested in understanding how the patriarchy impacts gender dynamics.

Reinventing Love is an insightful nonfiction text that challenged me to embrace new perspectives, while also reaffirming my own experience.

Lately when I’m asked about my dating life or past relationships with men, I’ve said “it just didn’t work out - they made me feel small.” I started saying this before I really took the time to investigate what specific actions made me feel both insignificant and overpowering, like I was too much and not enough all at once. This book opened my eyes to the systemic behaviors of our culture that result in so many women in heterosexual relationships feeling unseen, unheard, ignored, and unappreciated.

But Chollet doesn’t only focus on romantic relationships. She talks about larger dynamics in society, the ways people who aren’t involved in heterosexual relationships are still negatively impacted by patriarchal norms. Because the expectations and limitations of the patriarchy affect all of us every day.

I greatly appreciated how Chollet acknowledged the unique difficulties faced by women of color, and how multiple identities inform the way we move through the world. So often I read literature that claims to be feminist, but ignores how the patriarchy is harmful to every human, but has a varied impact depending on gender identity or racial background. This explores the mindsets and behaviors that make inequality seem “normal” and leave so many women feeling like they’re the problem when the system itself is broken.

This book has so much hope - hope for a world where people are loving and not controlling, empathetic instead of expecting their own needs to be met by their partner at all times. I’ve grown a lot over the last two years, and books like this help me to continue growing

What a glorious read. I have lately been familiarizing myself with feminism texts, and this book was an amazing addition to my roster of new reads. Reading about topics like domestic abuse and assault was very eye-opening and I will definitely be reading Chalet’s other books.

This is an important, well researched, look at a critically important subject. The book was filled with detail and the author offered extensive background material to support her position. I hope this book, and the author, get the attention this book (and its subject matter) deserve.

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review

Very interesting read, but sometimes it got a little confusing.

Mona needs to use footnotes to cite her work. The constant name-dropping and in-paragraph citations/quotes are very distracting from the actual subject matter. She does have a lot of relevant things to say, but it gets lost in all the names.

There were some parts that were interesting but I still felt that most of it was rushed and didn't provide the reader with any background info.

I understand what the author was going for, I just got lost in all the people she was quoting. I think this would be a good book to use to teach a class with all the references she listed.

Mona Chollet’s Reinventing Love is a great deep dive into the way patriarchy is continuing the cycle of power imbalance and systematically devaluing male/female relationships.

I’m always reading nonfiction about the female plate and this book definitely tracks that box. Chollet examines how heterosexual relationship relationships create a culture of inferiority of women, perpetuate the abuse cycle limit women’s professional development and objectifies women in general. All of this she does through a French lens based with her facts and figures collected mainly from French (France) sources. I found this to be somewhat of a double edged sword. Her take was very fresh and nuanced, and I appreciated the non-North American focussed look on these issues, but on the flipside as an American, some of her pointer references were difficult to relate based to. I will note that Chollet does include some stats and figures from the US in her research.

This book was pretty informative, but I was hoping to have more solutions and not just the outlying of how things are. This book would be good for people who are not already recognizing the terrible injustice that patriarchy is still perpetrating on male/female relationships. I also found that it was interesting how she introduces this work and paints queer and non-heteronormative relationships with rose coloured imagery, where I’m sure some of these issues also our present in these relationships. I think it’s easy for Chollet as heterosexual author to use the ideology that the grass is always greener on the other side when it comes to different relationships and their dynamics.

In general, I found this book very interesting, but not useful tomyself or my relationship. I think this book is best used as an observation of how things are wrong and this is starting point to open readers eyes and start the conversation to make a change.

Some parts of this book were incredibly informative and enlightening. However, there were other sections that I felt got weighed down by the research.

Thank you St. Martin’s Press for this complimentary copy.

I would love to rate this and tell you all about it. But alas, it's a St. Martin's Press title and I'm boycotting them for their lack of response to racist and misinformed remarks their employee made concerning Palestine.

Sucks for them for not being better humans and running a better publishing house. Generic three-star rating because I have to.

Reinventing Love by Mona Chollet was a really enjoyable read.
Very informative and honestly quite engaging. A book on how the Patriarchy Sabotages Heterosexual Relations.
I will definitely be spreading the word on this one.

Thank You NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
