This was a fun and quick read, perfect for fans of The Good Place.
I really enjoyed this book, it was very readable and I thought the concept was very fun. I had a hard time putting the book down because I wanted to see how it ended. My only issue was with the main character.
In this book, Delphie lives a solitary, sad life and dies alone after an embarrassing incident. In the afterlife she’s given one more chance at life. The catch is she needs to kiss her soulmate within 10 days and all she has to go on is his first name, what he looks like, and that he lives somewhere in London. Given a second chance, Delphie races to find her soulmate and meets new people and learns to live along the way.
I really loved the concept of the book and how it played out. It was fun to see the different ways Delphie tried to track down her soulmate. Getting to see her finally learn to live life while she had a short timeframe made the stakes higher and made it all the more readable. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
My only real issue was with Delphie herself. I did not like her at first so for the first part of the book it was hard to root for her. I felt like her reclusiveness was over the top. It didn’t make sense to me why she would push people away to the extent that she did and in the ways she did. So she came off as very rude at first. However, she does have a lot of character development in the story, so as she grows she becomes a lot more likable and becomes a heroine to root for.
I really liked the relationships that were formed in this story. I especially loved Delphie’s relationships with Cooper and Mr. Yoon. Even the side character relationships that were built were very special. I am a huge fan of “found family” stories and this definitely felt like one.
Overall, this was a great read!
What a crazy ride! This book is just the right combo of bat-crap crazy and sweet/romantic. We follow Delphie, a woman who has had, objectively, a very boring life. She is watching tv one day while eating a burger and she chokes to death. She wakes in an afterlife 'waiting room' where she meets Jonah. She is believes Jonah is her soulmate and she is offered a deal to go back to Earth to find her possible soulmate, she jumps at the chance. The catch is she has 10 days to find Jonah (whose last name she does not know) and get him to kiss her or else she will be sent back to the afterlife.
God, I loved this SO much. I’m an emotional mess!
The premise for this already sounded amazing so imagine my delight when it had ALL the tropes and situations that I could dream of rolled into it! I was constantly laughing out loud, Delphie was such a hilarious narrator. I was then pretty much constantly crying for the last 30% and the ending was so adorable! I loved the messages on living with grief and getting outside of your comfort zone.
This cast of characters were just fantastic. Aled, Frida, MR. YOON ILY, Merritt… just want to wrap them all in a hug. I adored Delphie and Cooper, they were so great and I loved their relationship. I did not predict the twist and I was FLABBERGASTED, soooo good! Every storyline was wrapped up so nicely. Definitely one of my favorites of the year so far. This is my first Kristy Greenwood book but don’t think it’ll be my last!
My Dead Romantics loving heart absolutely ATE with this one!!!! I don’t want to say too much because with one wrong word I think I could spoil it and that’s just not okay! I really think that if you loved TDR, then definitely give this a try.
I loved everything about the romance, but the found family of it all actually destroyed me. I’m such a sucker for a character building their community on page after being incredibly lonely for a long time. It was a bit quirky, very British, and full of shenanigans that actually made me laugh out loud. I’m on Delphie’s frontlines forever!!
I think this one was a ~bit lighter execution wise compared to TDR? The afterlife elements were a bit more cozy and comforting…and I didn’t cry up a lung. I DID cry, but it was happy tears? It definitely still dealt with death at its core, but just in a different way. I think I could pick this one up to reread a bit easier than TDR.
Obviously, it’s its own book so don’t take my comparisons to The Dead Romantics ~too literally! I just think it’s really good grounds for comparison and part of a slowly-growing subgenre that I’m obsessed with; I really enjoy the fantasy lite™ approach!

Overall, I’m very intrigued to see what Kirsty Greenwood writes next for Berkley!! I hope it’s in the same world. I’d even go so far as to BEG for a Merritt and Eric novella!!! Hello pre-order incentive 👀
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️*/5
*Threeish scenes, low-medium level of detail. I was a bit sad when the first scene was so short, the second scene definitely gave what I needed! It’s not a “spicy” book, but it’s not closed door.
CWs: Bullying, death, death of a sibling, car accident, toxic parental relationship
Thanks so much to the publisher for an eARC via NetGalley. All opinions are honest and my own.
I'm torn on this book. Overall I really enjoyed the writing, story idea, and characters of The Love of My Afterlife.
Delphie wasn't always the most lovable character but I enjoyed reading her and her growth throughout the book - she didn’t change quickly so the journey felt genuine. The second hand embarrassment was sometimes hard to get through but I think that's the point.
I think where I struggled was with the length of the book. We went around in circles a couple if times in the middle and I started to loose interest at about the 65% mark. For me this made the ending feel both rushed (since we took such a long time to get there) and too drawn out (since I started to feel a bit apathetic towards the characters and knew where the story would end up).
If you like romances that focus on character growth, I'd recommend checking this book out.
Rated 3 stars. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC ebook.
I didn’t care for any of the main characters, so it was hard for me to care about what happened to them. I was happy to see growth with the characters, but it wasn’t enough to make me like them. I was surprised by the twist at the end though. So that was nice.

While many of the references made me chuckle out loud, I could not connect with the main character enough to be invested in her story. The concept was interesting, but I didn't care much about if and who she was able to find and fall in love with. I did skip to the last page to find out if it was what I predicted, and it was.
Dying is just the beginning of really living for our heroine. When Delphie chokes to death on a microwaveable burger, she wakes up in a laundromat.... where she meets her soulmate. Except she is dead, and he isn't. She is given a rare chance to reclaim her life IF she can find him again in the next few days and get him to kiss her. A hilarious screwball rom-com that had me rooting for Delphie all the way!
This book had everything I was looking for! I laughed out loud and I swooned so hard. I had surgery last week and I took this ebook with me. I didn’t end up sleeping that night in the hospital as I stayed up to read! It was completely worth it losing a night of sleep. I’m jealous of the people that get to read this for the first time.
What if you met your soulmate after you died and you were sent back to earth to go get him to kiss you within ten days or you die again? Would you try? Do you believe in soulmates or love at first sight?
Thank you to NetGalley, Berkley Publishing Group and Kirsty Greenwood for a copy of the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story about another chance at not just love, but life. The cast of characters were great and I enjoyed all the time I spent in this book. Kristy Greenwood is a new favorite author for me.
This book has a great title and premise however, I felt the execution didn't live up to the hype. A recently deceased woman meets “the one” in the afterlife and has a second chance at life, only if she can get him to kiss her. The author clearly loves romance and I loved her inclusion of romance books and tropes in the text yet I felt this was a very average romance read. With a premise like this, I felt the author had a lot of plot options to play with but kept it very safe. You could take the afterlife aspect out of this book and it would be the exact same story. What is the point? This book has great marketability, I just wish the story lived up to my expectations.
The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood follows the afterlife journey of Delphie, who dies unexpectedly from choking on a microwaveable burger. As she stands in her 'shine like a star' nightie in front of the hottest man she's ever seen, she can't help but feel embarrassed. But as they start to chat, Delphie becomes completely smitten with the stranger, only to have him suddenly taken away from her by a mistake. But when the opportunity arises for Delphie to return to earth and possibly reconnect with the man of her dreams, she jumps at the chance. What follows is a heartwarming and humorous adventure as Delphie navigates the complexities of life and love in a bustling city. The characters in this book are charming and endearing, making it easy for readers to become invested in their stories. Delphie is a relatable and lovable protagonist, with her insecurities and struggles making her all the more relatable. The supporting characters are also well-developed and add depth to the story, especially Delphie's sassy and wise roommate, Pippa.
One of the highlights of this book is the writing style of Kirsty Greenwood. Her witty and clever writing is a joy to read, and she effortlessly weaves together humor, romance, and heartwarming moments. The dialogue between characters is sharp and entertaining, making the book a page-turner from start to finish. The book also touches on important themes such as self-discovery, the power of friendship, and the importance of following your heart. It's a story that will make you laugh, cry, and ultimately leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely highly recommend it to anyone looking for a feel-good read.
This one was an emotional one y'all. I do cry easy, but this had me in my feels! This story was filled with amazing romance, friendships and a bit of steam! The concept is so unique and fun and I really liked the writing style!! pretty good book!
I loved this book! It was really the perfect mix of romance, quirkiness, friendships, complex relationships, a smidge of steam and impactful emotions. I was rooting for Delphie, got teary-eyed when it came to Mr. Yoon and was dreading any possible thing that would get in the way of her realizing her true love.
I saw a reference to The Good Place in a description of this book and it definitely has some of those elements, so if that interests you at all, I recommend this book. But also if you just like romance books with characters you're actively rooting for, you should read this.
Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
When Delphie chokes on a microwavable burger, and is brought to the Afterlife, she can't believe that this is the end of her life. When she is shown a video of the highlights of her life, and realizes that she never really lived at all, she wants out of the bad dream.
Then, a man walks into the Afterlife...but it was a mistake. Now when he is sent back to the real world, Delphie strikes a deal to go back to find him...she thinks he is her soulmate. Now, with the help of Delphie's neighbor, Cooper, she tries to find this man in real life so she can really live her life.
Kirsty Greenwood take each character, and develops them beautifully, even background characters. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll cheer for Delphie to re-live her life, and find her man.
Cute romance with an off-beat premise. I would have been more interested in it had it stayed in the afterlife, but such as it is this will appeal to romance fans that appreciate a bit of bonkers in their romance. Especially for fans of British rom-coms and romance authors like Josie Silver.
THIS is my new favorite romance! I laughed, I smiled, I felt moved and hopeful. Perfect for fans of Dead Romantics, Britt Marie was Here, A Man Called Ove, All the Lonely People (love those character driven books!!!) and literally any romance ever. This book wraps up all my favorite things into one.
-a 90's romcom vibe
-grumpy characters that need connection
-a little bit of magical realism
-and a heavy emphasis on the amazing-ness that is romance writing
Just put this on your list for the summer. I hope you love it as much as I did. Can I jump into this book? 🫠 I loved the characters and would 100% read Aled and Frida's story next!! Or a prequel with Merritt! Ooh or even a book about how Merritt and Eric kill it in the afterlife dating scene with their amazing ideas! 🤞 That this becomes a series of stand alone books where our favorite characters make cameos. I digress, this book was so much fun to read.
Our grumpy isolated main character Delphie is home alone one night when she chokes on a burger and dies. She wakes up in the afterlife and is met by a quirky woman named Merritt. When handsome Jonah stumbles in, Sophie and Jonah have serious chemistry and Merritt gives her a second chance. The catch is, Jonah won't remember anything about being in the afterlife and Delphie doesn't know anything about him except his first name and that he lives in London. If she wants to stay "not dead" she has to find him and get him to kiss her. Time is limited and she better get started.
Will Delphie find Jonah before it's too late? What if she lets herself truly live?
Thank you to netgalley and Berkeley publishing for an ARC to review.
I am so glad I read this. It was a little slow for me at the beginning but very quickly grasped my attention. I devoured this in about 5 hours lol.
Never eat crappy microwave burgers by yourself, I guess.
This was nice! It was a sweet and heartwarming story on finding the full life you could have always had if you'd only stepped out of your comfort zone a little more. Delphie is a woman with a second chance at building meaningful friendships and relationships, making time for the things she enjoys, taking risks and doing things she wouldn't normally, and finding love. The way all the threads of her life, before and after death, came together was really well-done, and although it was predictable, I mean that in a good and comforting way.
However, for a story so centred on soul mates and romantic firsts, I found the romance itself to be incredibly lacking. There were a lot of missed opportunities to me, especially with how almost all of it is a first for Delphie, and I just couldn't get excited for her or believe the chemistry between the pair.
I loved this book. It is uplifting and heartwarming and I highly recommend it! It was a wonderful escape during a dreary winter. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC.
