The Love of My Afterlife
⭐️⭐️

“You make me laugh and you infuriate me. You make me want to be completely myself and to learn how to do that from you. You make it fun to be me.”

Thanks so much to @berkleyromance for the free book! #BerkleyPartner #Berkley

This book was incredibly absurd. It has been all over my Instagram feed lately.
In this book, Delphie chokes on a hamburger, and goes to the afterlife, but then is given a challenge that would allow her to remain on Earth.
Delphie must reconnect with a man she met for half a second in the afterlife. When she’s back on Earth he doesn’t know who she is.
THIS GIRL LITERALLY STALKS HIM. HE NEEDS TO FILE A RESTRAINING ORDER. IT’S CREEPY.
Also, I could not stand her. She was so annoying and wildly immature for her age.
I was really bored by like 60% but I was in too far to DNF.
The ending made me so angry too. I had an “are you kidding me” moment.
Now for things I liked. This book is wacky. It definitely makes it super entertaining and WTF funny at times. I also loved the character Mr. Yoon, his character was my favorite!
In my opinion, it’s perfect for fans of Katherine Center and the TV show “The Good Place”. I wanted to love this, but it just was not my cup of tea. I’ve seen plenty of positive reviews for it though, so there’s a chance you will adore it!

I love reading unique books!! Even as the book was nearing the end, I felt like there was no way all the loose ends could get tied up without rushing everything — I was so wrong!

Such a cute cliche written in such a unique way. There are so many possibilities for a happy ending, that the end is hard to anticipate and then there’s a huge curveball thrown in there that leaves your jaw on the ground. Anytime a book is based around a deadline, I’m always anxious about it until the goal or deadline is met, this book is no exception.

The romance is so sweet and their chemistry is wonderful.

It was fun seeing bookish things in here like romance tropes clearly described and relating the characters love stories to actual tropes. Overall, enjoyed this so much and couldn’t stop turning the page. A must read!

Thank you NetGalley and Berkeley Publishing for this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am calling it now, The Love of My Afterlife may end up being one of my very favorite books of 2024! I have not laughed as much as I did while reading this book and could not put it down!

Delphie is dead. As in, she finds herself in a waiting room (of sorts) in the afterlife, trying to figure out how she ended up there. By accident, she bumps into Jonah, the man of her dreams, who ends up in the afterlife waiting room by mistake. When Jonah is sent back to earth, Delphie strikes a bargain with her afterlife counselor, Merritt: if Delphie can find Jonah and get him to willingly kiss her in 10 days, she can return to the land of the living permanently. The catch? Delphie has no idea what his last name is or where in London he lives. As Delphie scours the city to find Jonah, she starts to learn that the “man of her dreams” may be a lot closer than she expected.

This book was everything! I have never read anything from Kirsty Greenwood, but you better believe I am going to read my way through her backlog! In fact, I loved this book so much, I already have a copy of it in print for my bookshelf.

The character development of Delphie was so beautifully done and the antics she got up to had me in stitches laughing. But the banter between her and her neighbor, Cooper, was my favorite part of the whole book! And Merritt! What a quirky character you couldn’t help but fall in love with.

If you love Sophie Cousens, Sarah Adler, Ashley Poston (specifically The Dead Romantics), and The Good Place (tv show), then this is the perfect book for you!

A HUGE thank you to Netgalley and Berkeley for the ARC!

At first I thought this was written by a man - the comedy was all Three Stooges stuff where we're supposed to laugh when someone gets hurt or lots of gross raunchy stuff like:
SWEAT - Why is she sweating all the time - while taking books home from the library, when she wakes up, when she's sitting to get her picture taken with Cooper - and then why does it need to be described in detail. And then just to make sure we get the joke, Mr Yoon is also sweaty to the point of fowl-smelling BO. Why?!
URINE + POOP - Why do we need to hear about the pee stain rolling its way down the sidewalk or the poop being picked up.
But then, I realized the author for some reason considers feces and bodily fluids as humorous because those are the only jokes she makes.
So it's possible, I'm not the right target audience for this since it's mostly toilet humor. And that's just not something I find appealing.
But aside from that, the book started out really strong for the first 10% and then it just went really south.
The main character is super unlikeable. She has no friends and then she treats everyone like garbage. And she complains about how much she hates London. And then when she does meet a nice person in the park, she tells her there is no way they are going to be friends and that they can only walk into an art class together and that's it.
The premise was so great - it had such promise.

I’m CRYING.

I’m a girl that reads for fun & escapism & fluffy romances. So it’s not often that i put myself in a position to really be touched by a book - but this one did. And i think it’s a book that all twenty-something’s need to read. Especially the introverted girlies like myself.

Delphies situation was extreme but i think a lot of us can relate to her story. Being unsure about what you want out of life. Being afraid of putting yourself out there. Making not choices because it’s what you want, but because it’s the safer option.

This book is a lovely reminder that life is beautiful even when it’s hard.

I loved this book.

I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil anything about this world or give anything away, but I will just speak on how this story made me feel. I think that Delphie is a great character who I relate to very much. She is stuck in her head and complicit in her mundane every day life and her life (or lackthere of) gives her a second chance to start being bold and having experiences. I liked how the afterlife was drawn in this story and the cast of supporting characters were wonderful. The found family aspect of this story really made me emotional, and while this book did have romance, it was not the only thing happening- but what I really enjoyed about the romance portion of this story is that it was very organic feeling and I think the chemistry between our love interests was very entertaining and delightful. It had the squee-factor. I think this novel is a feel-good and comforting read, and it will also give you some introspective feels. It definitely made me run the gamut with my emotions- I laughed out loud, cried, and smiled. I did not want it to end.

"The Love of My Afterlife" by Kirsty Greenwood is an absolute delight from start to finish. The premise itself hooked me—Delphie, our quirky protagonist, finds herself dead after an unfortunate microwaveable burger incident. Right off the bat, Greenwood sets a humorous and light-hearted tone throughout the book.

Delphie's post-mortem adventures are filled with charm and whimsy. Meeting a handsome stranger in her 'Shine Like a Star' nightie was hilarious and endearing. The chemistry between Delphie and this mysterious man is palpable, making their interactions a joy to read. Greenwood has a knack for creating accurate and relatable characters, even in extraordinary circumstances.

What I loved most about this book was Delphie's journey of self-discovery. Given the chance to return to earth and find her possible soulmate, she navigates the bustling city with a renewed sense of purpose. Her determination and vulnerability make her a character you can't help but root for. The story beautifully balances romance and personal growth as Delphie learns to listen to her heart and seek help when needed.

Greenwood's writing is witty and engaging, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Yet, she also weaves in poignant themes about love, life, and the magic that often goes unnoticed daily. This blend of humour and heart makes for a truly captivating read.

Overall, "The Love of My Afterlife" is heartwarming and enjoyable. It's a reminder that love and second chances are worth pursuing, even in the afterlife. If you're looking for a feel-good read with a unique twist, this book should be at the top of your list.

The Love of My After Life by Kirsty Greenwood
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 380 / Genre: Romcom

Bullied in high school and practically abandoned by her mother, Delphie keeps to herself and avoids interacting with people. Until the day she chokes on a burger, dies, and wakes up in Nevermore, where she meets Merritt, her afterlife therapist and romcom aficionado. Delphie also runs into another newly dead person—Jonah, who Merritt says is one of Delphie’s five designated soulmates. So when Jonah is suddenly recalled back to the living, Merritt makes a deal with Delphie that if she can get Jonah to kiss her in ten days, then she can resume living. While trying to find Jonah and get him to kiss her, she realizes she can’t do it without some help and ends up actually talking and socializing with her neighbors and co-workers, and even makes friends out of total strangers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fun, sweet romcom. I loved watching Delphie break out of her shell, make friends, and enjoy living. I especially liked that one particularly hot, grumpy neighbor, the fake dating game night, and the forced proximity incident at the inn with one bed. This romcom has it all.

Thank you, @NetGalley, @BerkleyRomance, and @Kristy_Greenwood for my gifted copy. I loved it!

“THIS CANNOT BE how I die. It really, really can’t. Naturally not everyone is blessed with the whole old-lady-from-Titanic option; drifting off into a toasty sleep, memories of making love to a peak Leonardo DiCaprio there to soften the blow of perishing. But choking to death at the age of twenty-seven? Delphie, no.”

Delphie Bookham has lived a mundane and unadventurous life in her twenty-seven years on Earth when a microwavable burger changes everything. She is thrust into Evermore, where she meets Jonah, but he isn’t completely dead like her, so he is sent back to the land of the living. Merritt, her Afterlife Therapist, decides to live out her romantic fantasies and sends Delphie back to Earth. The catch is she must find Jonah and get him to kiss her within ten days. If she succeeds, she can keep living, but if she fails, she must return to Evermore forever. While on her hunt for Jonah, she realizes that maybe he isn’t the one after all.

In this book, Delphie goes on a journey that isn’t just about finding Jonah. She had to find herself and push out of her comfort zone. She did things she would have never done before and started building connections and friendships. Delphie desperately needed Cooper’s help finding Jonah, and Cooper needed a fake girlfriend so his family would stop attempting to set him up. The more time they spent together, the less important Jonah became, and I stopped even caring about Delphie finding him. I just wanted these two to see what was right in front of them. As I’m partial to character-driven romance, this did not disappoint. I found myself laughing and smiling through the whole thing and cheering loudly for Delphie. This was an enjoyable ride from start to finish, and I will absolutely be picking up another book by this author.

If you’re a fan of Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics, then you should give this a try. I think you will thoroughly enjoy it.

This book! Such a fun, imaginative, heartwarming and hilarious read that I ADORED. I laughed out loud so hard that I woke my napping baby (worth it). The premise is unique, yet so simple and fun: Delphie needs to find her soulmate and only has 10 days to do it. Cooper, Mr. Yoon and all the side characters are so warm and the little family Delphie creates for herself is something to be envied. I love Delphie's growth and the plot twist at the end that really got me! Highly recommend this to any and all, especially fans of Ashley Poston, Sophie Cousens & Katherine Center. 4.75 stars ⭐️!

The Love of My Afterlife ticked a lot of boxes:
✅ One of the most popular romance tropes (I can't say anything to avoid spoilers)
✅ Tension, angst, and fun-filled banter
✅ OVER THE TOP CHEMISTRY
✅ Heartwarming side characters
✅ Value of friendship
✅ Found family trope (some parts made me cry)
✅ London setting
✅ The Good Place vibe

Delphie died in the most random way possible but was given a second chance at life by her afterlife therapist, Merritt. She was given a mission to fulfill on Earth in order to stay there and not go back to Evermore.

What I love about this book, aside from its romance aspect, is the friends and familial relationships she created along the way. Although Delphie does not have the best relationship with her parents, she found solace with her elderly Korean neighbor, her work colleagues, and her librarian. Before her death, she lived an unfulfilling life-isolating herself from people and only staying at home to binge-watch TV shows. As she gets a second chance at life, she finds herself enjoying people's company, voicing her anger at her high school bullies, and actively dating.

I felt all kinds of emotions while reading—from laughing out loud for 20 whole minutes to crying at 4am. This book is a gem to me, and I'm glad it's out for everyone to read.

I knew I had to give this a read when I saw it compared to The Good Place! I’m glad I did because it the lighthearted, funny read I was looking for. I really love books that explore a character finding out the things that make life worth living and it was a delight following Delphine’s journey. She had a hilarious inner monologue and was just a fun character. All the side characters were great, too. I think the first chunk of the book was definitely 5 stars for me but it got a little twee for me by the end. I also felt a little underwhelmed on the plot revolving around her mom and wish we got more from that. The love interest, though? Swoon! You just gotta love enemies to lovers, fake dating, and a misunderstood love interest.

Highly recommend if you love romances with magical realism.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with this book for free in exchange for my review! All opinions are my own. I was also lucky enough to get an advanced ALC from Penguin Random House Audio. #BerkleyPartner #gifted

I was super excited to get approved for this book because it has been on my list of upcoming reads this summer and I was looking forward to it. This book defied my expectations and as much as I thought I was going to enjoy this book, I actually enjoyed it even moreso! Compared to some romances, I didn't think that this book was predictable either, and the ending kind of left me speechlessI thought that Sofia Oxenham had a bright and cheerful (and soothing!) voice and was a wonderful choice to narrate this book. I am definitely going to look for more books narrated by her in the future!

I am definitely going to look out for more books by Kirsty Greenwood in the future!

A perfect magical realism romance that scratch the itch I had since reading The Dead Romantics. I literally read it in a day!

The premise was everything, I love how Delphie was given a second chance at life and happiness. The whole race against the clock aspect had me hooked from the start. I love Delphie and how she grew to truly love her community.

It had more depth than your usual romance and I will always root for more depth and growth. Loved every bit of this!

The Love of My Afterlife is out today and I barely have the words to express how much I adored this book! It’s a heartwarming and humorous story about soul mates and second chances that is sprinkled with a dash of magical realism.

The story follows Delphie, who in the opening pages of the book, dies by choking on a hamburger. When she arrives in the afterlife, she is greeted by Merritt, the quirky afterlife therapist who has been assigned to her. Merritt shows Delphie a film of her life flashing before her eyes and Delphie sadly realizes that she really wasted her entire life. She has never even been in love.

She then smacks right into the most handsome man she has ever seen and there’s a definite spark between them. Sadly, it turns out he isn’t actually dead. Merritt happens to be a hopeless romantic though and decides to cut a deal with Delphie. She will give Delphie ten days to go back to earth, find this man again, and make him kiss her. If Delphie can do that, she can have her life back.

Armed with only the name Jonah T. and that he lives in London, Delphie sets off in a race against the clock to find her soulmate and get her life back. The more she searches for him and fails to find him, the more she realizes how desperately she wants a second chance to live her life to the fullest. I’ve never had a romance book keep me up late into the night, but this one definitely did because I just had to know if Delphie could find this guy! I also loved that even the suspense was humorous as Merritt would pop up in the most random of places to remind her that the clock is ticking!

Everything about The Love of My Afterlife truly captivated me and I know this is a book I’ll be recommending to everyone!

This was so very sweet🥹 and, of course, made me cry- a few times!!

It was pretty obvious (to me at least) where this all was heading, but it was a wonderful journey there!

I love nothing more than found family! And all the friends she makes throughout her journey to get to her soulmate were just the sweetest😭 they helped her get past the comfort zones she had shielded herself with and helped her open up.

I can relate to having an absent parent and my heart went out to Delphie! She caged herself in her home and convinced herself she was okay because she didn’t want to be rejected again. But I’m so glad she learned how to live again.

I also was sent this book by the publisher, and it came with little notes (to open at certain pages) of the behind the scenes of writing this novel, and it was so fun to read! Added to the experience for sure!

I'm in love...

Magical realism is my (current) jam. So to my absolute NOT surprise, The Love of My Afterlife hit it out of the park for me. It's such a special book and I already have plans to re-read.
Delphie died in maybe the most embarrassing way ever. Coming to in her afterlife waiting room, she meets "the one" (or one of the five "the ones" we all have a HEA chance with if we can just find... one 😂 IYKYK). Delphie begs and bargains her way into a short-term return to earth on the condition that she finds him and he kisses her of his own free will.
This is going to be one of those books that will sit at the top of my recommendation list. It's funny and genuine and overwhelmingly heart-warming. I adored everything about it and am absolutely going to read Kirsty's backlist as soon as I can get my hot little hands on any of them.

My biggest, hugest thanks to @berkleyromance for the #gifted copy of one of my absolute favorite reads for this year! All thoughts are my own.

Short synopsis: After choking on a hamburger and dying, Delphine strikes up a deal with an afterlife specialist to go back to Earth to find her soulmate.

My thoughts: From chapter one, I was laughing out loud, and the fun just didn’t stop. I loved the strange situations Delphie kept finding herself in, she was such a fun quirky character, and I adored her. But among the humor, there is so much heart to this book. We get amazing side characters with great stories.

At the root of this book are stories of finding love when you least expect it, in the ordinary moments. And the found family made my heart so happy!

This is sure to be a hit this summer for all my Rom-Com loving friends!

Read if you love:
- Romance books with deeper themes
- Quirky characters
- Microwave hamburgers
- Magical realism
- Found family

This book is so quirky cute, I love it!! I'll admit to being a little skeptical at first but the more I read, the more I couldn't put it down. If you're looking for a good book that will make you literally laugh out loud, giggle, smirk, roll your eyes, emote in all the fun ways then this is it!! When Delphie recites "poetry" I lost it. Kirsty gives us all the feel good vibes, romance, friendship, and a touch of anxiety with that timeline😜 Plus, the reader is reminded that life is short and you should spend it doing the things you love, making meaningful connections, and not worrying about what anyone else will think.

Imagine choking to death on a burger at 27 after living a very solitary life, with no romantic or even seemingly nonromantic meaningful connections? This is exactly how our heroine Delphie dies. Shortly after, she's meeting her Afterlife Therapist, who comes off a bit strong, and also possibly the love of her life?! But one second Delphie is looking into Jonah's eyes and the next he's gone, poofed back to the world of the living, having never actually been dead. Delphie is given 10 days to return to Earth, find Jonah, and get him to kiss her. If she manages, she gets to return to her life, but if not she'll be sucked back into the afterlife. WHAT A RIDE. Honestly, Delphie lives a whole life in these 10 days and we're just along for the ride.

I love how much happens in a short time span and how well we get to know the characters in what's supposed to be a very short time. I found myself very attached to our two main characters and all of the side characters were unique and a little kooky, so naturally I loved them. The banter between Delphie and Cooper is top notch and all my favorite tropes are present and accounted for: enemies to lovers, fake dating, forced proximity, etc. Delphie experiences so much personal growth and I love how much focus is on self discovery, not just in her search for love but also making peace with the past and opening up to new experiences and relationships. It's a very feel good, cozy read that I will likely find myself going back to again. I also truly enjoy when books come into play within books -- I'm here for all the references.

I highly recommend to everyone but especially romance readers!

Thank you Berkley for the eARC via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
