A gripping mystery that blends the hard-boiled detective genre with emotional depth and noir-inspired storytelling. Dylan Fisher is a former Dallas police officer turned private investigator, who is pulled into a deadly investigation when his ex-wife, Rose Doucette, is murdered. Dylan had been helping Rose investigate a suspicious death tied to a drug dealer, but as soon as she is killed, all signs point to Dylan as the primary suspect.
What follows is a tense and twist-filled ride as Dylan teams up with Rose’s second husband, a defense attorney, to clear his name and uncover the truth. The novel’s punchy, first-person narrative is reminiscent of classic noir, with a modern twist that keeps the pages turning. Hunsicker excels at capturing the gritty underbelly of Dallas while exploring themes of betrayal, corruption, and love. The emotional stakes are high, and the mystery is laced with gut-punching twists, making it a highly satisfying read for fans of crime fiction and detective stories. The author sucks you into the strained relationship between Dylan and Rose's second husband, as they band together to do right by Rose. Entertaining, and a fast paced read.
A nicely twisty mystery that sees Dylan team up with his ex-wife Rose's second husband Tito to solve her murder, a murder that the police would like to pin on him. Old secrets are at the root of this and things do become a bit far fetched in spots but regardless, the characters and storytelling are good. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. An interesting read.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Oceanview Publishing for an advance copy of The Life and Death of Rose Doucette, a stand-alone featuring PI Dylan Fisher set in Dallas.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Life and Death of Rose Doucette, which is a high octane investigation into Rose’s murder told from Dylan’s first person of point of view. The first person perspective works extremely well, getting the reader involved in the action and caring about the outcome.
I like the way the author builds his plot, keeping the action and the mystery of what’s going on going until it’s time to start the reveals. I would have never guessed either the outcome, the perpetrator or the motive and while none of them are particularly likely it doesn’t matter because the reader gets caught up in the plot and is rooting for Dylan to be exonerated no matter how. It should be noted that the how tends to involve violence and dead bodies so it might not be for all readers.
Dylan has a very attractive narration style. It’s not overly humorous but it is warm and light, inviting the reader to keep turning the pages to see what is coming next. He is a smart, dedicated investigator, maybe not so much in his personal life.
The Life and Death of Rose Doucette is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
With a few tweaks here and there, I feel like this one has the potential to be even better. The bones of the story are solid - the ex-wife of a former cop turned private investigator reaches out to him for help solving a murder that she was told was a solid case of suicide. Before he can get more information from her, she storms off and ends up dead. And as the story unfolds, he finds out just what kind of secrets she kept buried all of these years.
See? Solid concept. Throw in a few corrupt cops, a current spouse with an axe to grind, an "untouchable" family and boy this should have been a 4 or 5 star read, so why wasn't it?
For starters, it bordered on the implausible a few times, for example how is it that Dylan finds out that an old friend of his wife's is staying nearby and then that person is almost immediately targeted while he is meeting with her? There is no explanation as to how this might have happened, especially since it was an acquaintance of his who even was able to gain access to where she was. Then we have Dylan being pulled over by one of the corrupt cops on the force (who leaves evidence), but once that interaction is over there is no more mention of this particular officer.
And I mean, on one hand I guess I get it, but I would have found the story a bit more interesting had Dylan pressed charges - how would the story shifted then? Even if the entire police force was crooked (spoiler alert they weren't), it would have been hard to explain what had happened in a way that his lawyer couldn't have argued against.
On the flip side of that, he had been ordered to stay away from investigating his ex-wife's death by the judge who had granted him bail. And while technically, he could argue he was looking into the death of the man who died prior to Rose, seeing him actually try to clear his name from inside of a jail cell would have been interesting, not to mention the fact that the powers that be would have had no trouble shutting him up from the inside, made me wonder why they didn't go that route. They didn't technically "need him" by that point as the other two people who were invested in what happened would have no doubt carried on their own investigations.
However, things progressed as they did, and there were just enough dead ends, curious leads, and suspicious characters to keep me invested in this story. I even enjoyed the slight twist at the end, which was something that I had been wondering about. Even though there was a lot going on, it was easy to follow although I still don't entirely understand the reasoning for two people being there as well who really had nothing to do with it.
Nevertheless, the epilogue in my opinion was entirely un-needed unless this author plans to turn this book into part one of a series (which I would whole-heartedly support). Otherwise it didn't make any sense to include, especially when the details seem to come out of the blue after what we learned throughout the novel about certain characters. I mean I suppose going through what they did together might have changed their minds, but I would have liked to see a bit more of that before the ending.
As it stands, I would read more from this author regardless of the characters, but I do think he might be on to something if he wants to make PI Dylan Fisher more than just a one-off character in a story.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
This book was pretty interesting. I feel like it didn't start out faster paced how i expected. I will definitely try another book by this author in the future but this book in particular just wasn't for me.
Look, I enjoy thrillers written by men as much as the next person: I accept there is a degree of sexism but I can still enjoy the story. This holds true here. It's a light read thriller, but don't look for much more from it. The twists were nice
So I wouldn’t classify this as a thriller. More of a detective mystery. I give it 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I found the book to me quite slow at first. There is so much build up between the story line and everything but the characters. They kinda fell short for me. You don’t really get to know any of them well. You get snippets from each just enough to understand them. But not fully engaging with any of them. I did enjoy the bit of a twist at the end. If you enjoy a cop mystery I would suggest trying this book out and seeing how you feel about it. Definitely a decent rainy day read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC
I read this in one sitting- that does not happen for me very often. Definite trigger warning for child sexual abuse references.
I really enjoyed these characters and their dynamic. There were so many tears shed, the emotions really bled through the page. The pacing was fantastic. The only thing I didn't love was the use of 'infant' three times when referencing Caleb, it felt very unatural. But that is really nothing compared to the story.
This story was an okay read and my first by this author. It kept me engaged but I was not all that invested into the story. If you’re new to psychological thrillers then this would be a great fit.
Thank you to Harry Hunsicker, Oceanview Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity.
3⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was a little iffy about this one. I normally love to find new authors and to be able to read their books but this one was just in the middle of the road.
"The Life and Death of Rose Doucette" by Harry Hunsicker is a gripping mystery novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The protagonist, Rose Doucette, is a complex and intriguing character whose journey will keep you guessing until the very end. Hunsicker's writing is sharp and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers hooked. Overall, this book is a must-read for fans of the mystery genre.
It's been a while since Harry Hunsicker published a book but now he is back with a humdinger of a story. The Life and Death of Rose Doucette is one of the best detective stories I have read in quite a while. We have private investigator and ex cop Dylan Fisher being asked by his ex wife to solve a suspicous death, we also have her current husband interfering, Dylans friend who is an attorney and a powerful man seeking elected office, oh and some corrupt cops. It's hard to write about this book without spoiling it. It is fast paced and filled with twists. The mystery goes back in time and involves a number of people. I have not read much by this author but he is great at creating godd characters and he sure knows how to tell a story. Highly recommended. I must thank Oceanview Publishing and Netgalley for letting me read this advance copy.
I love the cover of this book with the half face and all but i did not enjoy this book i almost did not finish. I get she went to her ex for help but then he went to her widow and a lawyer for help all seemed a little out there for me. And her death who does that. I would give it a 2.5 or a 3. I love thrillers but did not love this one.
This was a fun murder mystery, following Dylan, a former cop turned PI, who seeks to solve the death of his ex-wife, Rose. As Dylan works to untangle the reasons for Rose's murder, he finds himself uncovering secrets from her past. The story was well-developed, with smart plot twists. It definitely had an action-hero vibe, which was different from a lot of other mysteries I follow. I thought it was an interesting ride overall.
Great story, good amount of plot twists, plenty of dead bodies and three great characters, this book is certainly worth a read. I promise you'll be sucked in quickly. I'd be keen to read more from Harry Hunsicker, especially if he decided to write more around Dylan and Mia, Tito or even expanded a little more on Rose's time as a cop. Top read, thanks NetGalley and publisher!
This book was really difficult to get into, and to finish. This book was honestly super slow, and way longer than it needed to be. A little too many twists and turns that maybe I just missed but made us deter a little too much from the main storyline and made it more confusing than it needed to be. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was an extremely good murder mystery! The characters are well developed and multi-dimensional. I really enjoyed this action packed story. I was hooked from the beginning and had to keep going to the end. I recommend this for everyone who loves a good murder!
This book was a fascinating murder mystery that becomes more interesting as murders happened. Love how characters have development and multi-dimensional. Really enjoyed this action packed story. I was hooked from the beginning and the writing was well-thought. Highly recommend this! ☺️
This was my first book by this author and I was pleased. He has a writing style that keeps you interested but is not difficult to understand. The plot was great and the characters sharp. Overall I enjoyed it.
This was the first book I have read by this author but it for sure will not be my last. This book hooked me right from the first. Dylan Fisher is summoned by his ex-wife Rose Doucette to meet with him, she wants to hire him to help her solve a murder. A murder that she as a cop has been asked to step away from, but cannot seem to let go. After she leaves, he sees a car follow her chases behind, he gets there too late, Rose has been shot and Dylan tries to stop the killer and is hit by the fleeing vehicle. When the police arrive, they instantly believe that Dylan is guilty of murdering his ex-wife. I was immediately on Dylan’s side and hated the cop, Lutz who is set on taking Dylan down.
Dylan relies on his friend and lawyer, Mia and then eventually comes to work with Rose’s current husband, Tito to try to get to the bottom of why Rose and others have been murdered and to do that, they have to delve into Roses’s childhood and discover the horrors that may have occurred and try to find the person responsible. Lots of action and a good storyline.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion..
