Not at all what I expected but a fantastic surprise. A proper page turner that left me wanting more. What would you do during a nuclear attack? How far would you go to get to your family? A story of hope and desperation. Truly wonderful
Not a fan of this one...
I usually love Kate Hewitt's novels, but this one was a little too depressing and farfetched for me. I skipped through a lot of it because it just didn't hold my interest. With that said, I will read more of Ms. Hewitt's books. She is one of my favorites!
This was a very different genre for me and I truly enjoyed it. The plot was both scary and heartbreaking at the same time. The whole concept was very thought provoking..... how often do we actually think about having to survive such a devastation. Definitely a story that will stay with the reader long after it is read
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was definitely not the story I expected! A page turner and at times seemed too extreme even given the circumstances (a spoiler so you will need to read it to find out!). Every chapter ended with an even more crazy cliff hanger. The end of the story was also unexpected and rather an anti-climax, but I'm guessing this is the first of a series. It certainly raises a lot of thought-provoking topics, and although in some ways it is almost a 'light' read in terms of its writing, would probably be a good pick for some bookclubs. I think the story and writing is a 3.5 stars but 4 stars because of its daring and page-turning! And in today's world, especially America, such things could happen...
Liked how the book starts out, with the family having to go to an isolated cabin in Canada after the husband loses his job and their house is foreclosed. Angry teens with poor wi-fi makes for limited contact. Would have liked the book best if it was the only issue, but the terror attacks and violence threw me a bit. Might just be me, but started to skim over those parts. Still though, would recommend this book and do like this author.
The Last Stars in the Sky looks like a nice relaxing read. It is not. I'm not sure I would have read this one had I known what it is about. However, I am very glad I did. I would have missed out on a great read.
This is an emotional one. Great characters. A story of survival.
I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it there.
My only wish was that it went on a little longer at the end. I wanted to know more further in the future.
Thanks to netgalley and Storm Publishing for the advance copy.
Thanks to Net Gallley, Storm Publishing for the opportunity yo read Kate Hewitt's The Last Stars in the Sky.
Thought provoking and heartfelt, but difficult to read at times.
I was not expecting a book with such a beautiful cover and a title “The Last Stars in the Sky” to have the twist in the plot that it did. I don’t want to give too much away so others can also have that moment of surprise. There was good character development and the events kept me hooked. The small time jumps worked well, however the end seemed rushed, but does set itself up for future novels. 3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Kate Hewitt has thought out a thrillingly immersive plot for this story which places a regular family who have got themselves into a financial situation after husband Daniel looses his job. They decide to relocate to Alex’s parents old log cabin in the wilds of Canada only to find themselves entering Into Armageddon as the USA is wiped out by a series of nuclear blasts. The story quickly picks up pace exploring how each of the characters comes to terms with a dangerous new world and how they fight to keep the family together. I like how the story splits into two sections as it follows both Daniel and Alex’s lives as they part in order for Daniel to attempt to rescue their son Sam trapped in his university building.
The family eake out an existence facing dangers and building relationships with a few other people along the way knowing it is just a matter of time until bands of vigilantes find them.
The ending is fast paced and I couldn’t put it down and then wished it wasn’t over.
A great read and one not to be missed.
A HUGE thank you to Net Gallley, Storm Publishing and author, Kate Hewitt for providing this ARC of The Last Stars in the Sky. I rate this book five stars!
This story was fascinating and quite thought provoking. The idea of attacks on our major cities is frightening and sadly, real. What would we do? I was reminded of where I was on 9/11. The day of being sent home because of the pandemic. The scare of Y2K. All these memories etched in head kept this book in my thoughts from start to
finish. There were some surprising events in the plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see how the author continues with this story.
I read a lot of thrillers. I was looking to take a break and read a family drama. When I picked this book up I thought it was about a family facing divorce. Let’s just say this book surprised me. I can’t even really say what it’s about because I feel like it spoils it.
This book was about survival. It was about how people deal with trauma and violence and band together to make it through. I would definitely label this book a thriller because it was full of action. I held my breath the last few pages because I literally didn’t know what would happen.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this arc. Make sure to get your copy Jan 24th!
I just finished this book today and it has come up in my thoughts quite often since then. I even discussed it with my husband on the relevance of the content in our current times. I have to say it was thought provoking and especially disturbing, but I could not stop listening to it via voice view. I even repeated the last 3 chapters since so much was happening and I didn’t want to miss anything.
The author did quite a bit of research on how things would be in the situation surrounding the story. Alex and Daniel truly stepped up to the plate. There is so much behind the scenes of the story if you pay attention to the characters. Each of them grew and expanded themselves outside the box, adapted and overcame. Who would we become if we were put in these situations, and how would we handle them? Would we figure it and do what we could to provide for our family, we cannot depend on the government to provide for us.
I am so glad I read this; it will stay with me for a long time. Thank you, Ms. Hewitt.
I received an ARC from Storm Publishing and NetGalley for my unbiased review – This one comes in with high 5 stars.
Wow I didn't see that coming. I was sucked into this book once we know that they are going to be stuck there and how to figure out how to survive.
This is a family looking for answers and finding support in each other. While they are going through a crazy apocalypse.
This book was intense and I laid awake thinking about it.
I liked how they learned to live off the land and figured out who could be of help to them.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
WOW, what else can I say, really great with twists and turns along the way. Recommended with 5 stars
Thanks to Netgalley, author and publisher for this ARC
Damn but Kate Hewitt is one heck of a writer.
I both loved and hated this book. Being honest, if I’d realised what the big event was going to be, I wouldn’t have picked it up. It isn’t my kind of read and I won’t be looking to read any more like it. My imagination and emotions just can’t cope.
The cover and blurb made me expect a touching domestic drama, but this one was closer to emotional torture.
I wanted to stop reading, but it was too compelling. Every time I thought the tension in my shoulders needed a break, there’d be another cliffhanger that meant I had to keep going for the sake of my sanity. The author was just too skilful, and I’m left in awe of her.
Having just finished reading it, I feel like I need to lie down in a darkened room with a comfort blanket. If you like being kept on the edge of your seat, you'll love it. Personally, I need time to recover and for my fingernails to regrow.
Alex and her husband Daniel are forced to move after losing their home in Connecticut and their oldest daughter is suspended from school. Needing a reset to fix their family, they move to the remote cabin in Ontario, Canada where Alex grew up. Being back in this cabin she hasn't visited in years brings back so many memories and she's convinced this is the best thing for them... until the unimaginable happens and they're left fighting to survive when the world falls apart.
After the first about 20% of the book which was a little slow, the story really picked up. At first I didn't really like Alex and her whiny teenage daughter Mattie, but as they are forced to learn how to survive and protect their family I started to respect them a lot more. The story splits between Alex and the girls and Daniel on his journey to rescue their son, showing more of what's happening in the rest of the country. This book really makes you look at your own life and how prepared you would be for a disaster situation. I loved this book and I plan to look for more books by this author!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you NetGalley for granting me the opportunity to read, 'The Last Stars in the Sky' by Kate Hewitt. I have never read one of Kate Hewitt's books before, so when I read the synopsis of the book, I was intrigued. I have always loved a good survivalist book and this certainly was just that. The storyline and characters kept me turning the pages and waiting to see how the next obstacle would be faced and I was gunning for each of the characters as they encountered each new challenge. If you're a fan of survivalist type books this is definitely worth a read, the only downfall for me was the ending; I was hoping for something more succinct rather than open ended.
The Last Stars in the Sky by Kate Hewitt ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Another good book that I happily got to read and review by Kate.
A very emotional tear jerker book about a family's fight to survive.

Must have tissues.
I received an advanced copy from netgalley for my honesty reviews.
Alex and her family have gone to stay at her family's remote cabin in Canada for the holidays after losing their home in Connecticut. While they are there, something major happens in the world and instead of hunkering down for the holidays like they planned, they must suddenly fight for survival. I went into this book completely blind and I'm so glad I did! This unexpected story was both emotional and thought provoking. Kate Hewitt, if you're reading this, I really hope there is a sequel!
The cover and blurb on this made me think this was an emotional family drama which I guess it kind of was but nothing like I anticipated and when the plot became obvious I did contemplate not finishing it as I’m not into survivalist / doomsday type reads however I decided to persevere. Although there were many bleak moments in this there was a very well written human element which is what made it surprisingly readable and put a lot of the characters previous existence into perspective. It’s difficult to say how believable this felt as the characters were in an advantageous position living in a remote location with a good basic quantity of supplies but it did seem well considered overall especially the desparation of other citizens when the world as they know it has been decimated. The insular location of this made the overall read more palatable as it was somewhat separate to the rest of the country and very much focussed on the characters rather than the disaster itself but it still has a constant air of desperation and impossibility.
