I really enjoyed this book. Full of beautiful descriptions of the Scottish countryside and sea lochs, folklore and secrets, with a real twist at the end.
Looking forward to reading the next installment.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy in return for an honest review.
What a great and thrilling read and one I couldn't put down. This is a thriller with twists and turns, full of emotion and drama and heartache as well. This is a book that will have you on the edge of your seat while rapidly turning the pages so you can find out what is going on.
The characters are so real and the PI (Teàrlach Paterson) has been well thought out and well written. And having said that the whole book is so well thought out and written which even thought the story is intense it is easy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Bring on book two.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I enjoyed this. A local girl goes missing, grief-stricken parents. The father is presumed to be a gangster. Three years on, Private Detective Tearlach Patterson is hired to investigate. As the gardener of the missing girl's father is found murdered, and then the bones of a girl are discovered, it becomes clear that not is all as it seems. I couldn't put this down. Brilliant from start to finish.
Scottish Folktales and The Hidden Secrets
The Girl in the Loch by Andrew James Greig, is a professionally written story of the disappearance of a three-year-old girl named Lily Paterson. Lily vanished from her home in the remote highlands of Scotland whilst playing outside. Her parents are grief-stricken after waiting three years with no results, so they hire a private detective called Tearlach Patterson. Patterson is brought in three years after Lily’s disappearance as he is an expert in his field on missing children.
Patterson hears rumors that Lily’s father Tony Matterson is an extremely dangerous man and that Lilys nanny disappeared shortly after Lily’s death. Then just after Patterson is employed the gardener at Tony Matterson's is found murdered. Then shortly afterwards the bones of a child are found in the Loch close to Lily’s house but are they Lily’s.
The stakes are high and there are some surprising twists and turns throughout this book, in this small, isolated community where everyone knows everyone and the people who live in this remote village are very superstitious and believe that the Loch itself holds plenty of folk law of what may lie at the bottom of the loch. Increasing Patterson hears a lot of ghost stories and some very strange. This book is a great thriller and takes some surprising turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you realise how much some of the lengths that the characters will go to conceal evidence to the detriment of the case.
It is an excellent read in the remote Scottish landscape with Scottish folktales and the hidden secrets that will be revealed from the parents of little Lily and the truth which finally comes out as to what happened to this little three-year-old girl. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this book. It was different than anything else I've read recently. I couldn't put it down! I will keep an eye out for this author's future work!
Really great PI story, looking for a girl missing for three years…lots of complicated twists, turns, deaths, hacking, etc. liked all the main characters, the story line, and look forward to the next one.
This was such a good book! I read it in one sitting and could not put it down! I would definitely recommend this book.
Thanks NetGalley for the review copy
This book was everything I imagine/remember about Scotland - gritty, gripping, violent and full of wonderful people, strange characters and stunning landscapes.
PI Tearloch is investigating the disappearance of a toddler in a small town in the Highlands by a loch. Did she fall in? Was she killed? Has she been kidnapped? The twists and turns within our mystery are as windy as the roads. What you think is up is really down. Will you work out what happened to this most loved young girl or will your heart be left on the stones for the wildlife to shred?
A deftly crafted and twisty crime thriller, that should engage with fans of the genre.
A missing child search rapidly unravels into something much more complicated for our investigators. Atmospheric, gritty at times, but also a little formulaic in plot and characterisation. A page-turning read, nonetheless, so 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
(With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this title.)
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. I am pleased to say that I enjoyed it. A 3 year old girl disappeared from her garden 3 years earlier, as her father hires a Private Investigator to search for her. The Father is a wealthy man with numerous dubious activities that have made him a wealthy man. The PI teams up with a women also employed by the father to help by having into various possible subjects. A very interesting story line that kept me reading Also scary in how easy hackers can find out information about people!
This is the first book I've read about his author and I received a copy from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. It came out on the 26th of January.
The disappearance of a three-year-old girl from her home one summer shook the nation but three years later, she is still not found. Her parents hire private investigator Teàrlach Paterson – an expert in finding missing children – to help find Lily. This case turns out to be not that straightforward. The father is said to be a dangerous man and some locals appear to work against him. After uncovering some important facts surrounding this case the situation gets even a bit more grim. Will he be able to solve this case without more casualties?
The story is a nice one albeit a bit predictable and straightforward at times. That doesn't take away the fact that this is a thrilling read with the two main characters well worked out. Especially to make characters form a great duo and hopefully they will return in future books. All in all, a more than decent read that gives hope for a sequel.
3,75/5 ⭐
A gritty, dark, twisty thriller that kept me on the hooked. A strong sense of places, well rounded characters and a solit plot
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Thrilling. Tense. Completely addictive. i was frantically turning the pages, my heart in my mouth. Wow, what a gripping read this was! I very highly recommend this one.
A suspenseful read that kept me guessing from start to finish! I felt like I was standing at the edge of the loch with the authors descriptive language! First in a series and I will definitely be reading the next!
A young girl goes missing. Without a trace. Three years later, the still grieving father hires a private investigator to find out what happened to his little girl. Lilibet would be six years old now. The PI has low hopes of finding her alive but while trying to figure out what happened, he discovers a bunch of buried secrets.
I enjoyed this book. The story was well written, the intrigue well played and what to say about the old Scottish folklore that adds a nice touch of mystery and makes for a chilling ambiance and uncertainty.
I thoroughly enjoyed this this Crime/Thriller read from beginning to end. I was completely engrossed and could not bring myself to put this one down. The book of itself is beautifully written from the characters to the prose. The plot is rock solid and filled with lots of twists and turns along the way-keeping readers interests piqued and having left us guessing as well.
There is cozy murder mystery feel to this one, with references to Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot-two of my favorite detectives of all time. I also loved the addition of Scottish folklore as it added a level of spook to the book, making it even more atmospheric and drawing in the reader even more. The journey to uncovering the truth to what exactly happened to Lilybet Masterson, is a wild one and no matter how hard you try, you won't be able to figure out the jaw-dropping ending and twist that occurs.
Another thing I really appreciated, was how the author skillfully gives readers an insight into the past of the characters without adding too much fluff to the story-always a plus on my end. I seriously dislike when a thriller has too much unnecessary drama that adds nothing to the plot.
There's none of that here and that just made this read even more enjoyable for me.
I cannot wait to see more of Tearlach, Dee and Chloe, this trio is one to be on the lookout for,
A special thank you to Storm Publishing, Netgalley and the author for my eARC of this book.
All opinions are 100% my own and I leave my review voluntarily.
A brilliant book with a gripping storyline a missing child . The main Character Paterson is believable. I look forward to reading more in this series
This is the first book in a new thriller series. It is based in Scotland.
I did really enjoy the story, and am happy with how everything was tied together in the end.
I did find some of the terminology a bit confusing, but was still able to understand what was going on.
I'd rate this book as a 3.5, but will round up to a 4 star.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC
I had a hard time getting into The Girl in the Loch, but once I did I really enjoyed it. It is exciting, despite the slow start, and I appreciated that the author gives the reader enough information to figure the mystery out for ourselves, it we're paying attention.
Definitely a creepy thrill if you are into thrillers/suspense novels. I loved the writing and the characters that went along with this story. It was a creative read and one that will keep you intrigued the whole way.
