Two sisters finally get their chance to attend the legendary senior trip. They expect to have a life changing experience- and they do - but not like they expected! This book will definitely keep you interested and anxious to see what happens.
The story was very well written. I kind of guessed the twist at the end fairly quickly. But i did enjoy the story and I could not out the book down.
I really wanted to like this book, but it fell flat for me unfortunately. I don't think I connected with it like I wanted to and although it was interesting to read, it lacked something for me and I don't know what. I know that there are patrons at my library that will disagree with me and love this book, so I will still recommend it for purchase at my library.
if you’re into YA-murder mysteries, silent sister may be the perfect book for you.
the book was a little too slowed paced for my liking, & i wasn’t very much a fan of the dual pov of the 2 sisters. i like when things go fast—i’ve never been great at handling books that deal with both past & present; so that can just be a personal issue for me.
as fun as the twist was, i could spot it from the first chapter —the funnest part of a mystery book is the mystery itself. i felt like the ending was a bit of a cop-out & it greatly disappointed me. but overall, the book was nicely written and may work for a younger audience.
2 ½ stars.

thank you netgalley & random house children for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!!!
A tale of tragedy, loss and self love. This is told in two parts and povs. Grace and Maddie are sisters. When they go on their senior sebatical, it turns into a night no one will ever forget. We get maddies pov in the past telling us what led up to the present in graces pov. I did predict what was going to be revealed around the middle, but it still kept me hooked and engaged the whole way through. The romance subplot was adorable and the discovery of self love and acceptance was done very well. Such a great thriller!
When I started with this book I wasn’t sure what to expect. The book focuses on two seniors, Grace and Maddy, and what happens on their senior sabbatical. It does alternate characters and timelines, but is super easy to follow.
There were a few times during the story that I thought I had things figured out and the author gives you just enough to make you second guess everything you think you may know. In the end, I was partially right, but in a way no where close to the way I thought I would be. An excellent story!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children’s/Delacorte Press for the eARC! All opinions are my own.
I have never read anything by this author but if all the stories by this author are as good i will read anything she writes.
What a ride!!!!! This book was written very well with plot twists that will leave you thinking of this long after you read it. It kept you guessing and everytime you thought you had it bam another twist so good! The character build is so good and just a mix of true crime and mystery / Suspense / Thriller.
What a perfect read for any age not just middle grade.
I will recommend this to anyone that asks. Great Kudos to this author.
Thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review.
HOLY MOLY. This book took me on a ROLLERCOASTER of emotions. So wonderfully written and the plot twist had me unbelievably shocked, i had NO idea that was coming. The characters are so relatable and genuine and I enjoyed this so much. Very good mix of true crime / thriller but not graphic or over the top. Perfect for any audience middle school and up. Great read!
YA thrillers are the bane of my existence. I love them so much but I also hate them. It seems I have finally outgrown them. When I read the blurb of Silent Sister, I was intrigued. I had a feeling it was going to be predictable. Most thrillers these days are. And while I could guess the big twist of Silent Sister pretty early on, I still enjoyed it.
The book kept me pretty invested right from the start. Because while I knew what was coming, I have always enjoyed the journey to get to the twist. And Silent Sister wasn't too bad. My biggest issue was the missing sister, I wasn't a fan of the direction of what happened. It felt silly. I would have liked more, maybe something bigger or more disturbing.
The characters kind of frustrated me. Maddy was sweet and I felt terrible for her, but at the same time, she irritated me. If she would have just communicated more with her sister/family, then I think she wouldn't have led such a sad life. And Grace, I won't lie, I barely remember anything about her. She was very forgettable.
Silent Sister may not be a great book, but it was pretty good. The best YA thriller I have read this year.
This is a strong YA thriller that tries to say a lot, and sometimes succeeds. There are some points, especially in the beginning of the story, that feel forced or overwroght, even repetitive, but this somehow seems to get ironed out as the story plays out.
Davidhizar does an excellent job capturing the feel of high school, of those friendships and how much they mean to us, the shame and fear and embarrassment that they can cause. She did an excellent job at painting two sisters who love each other but might not know each other.
Its not a revalatory story, but it is compulsive. I wanted to find out what was going on, though, as with many YA books like this, I went into it knowing/assuming the question the book blurb asks isn't going to be the answer. It was an interesting ride getting to the conclusion though.
Ooooooooooh this book! Silent Sister was more a mystery than thriller if you ask me but that doesn’t make it any less fantastic. I couldn’t even begin to guess what was happening until the very end. It’s not often that I genuinely don’t know what is happening, but this book kept me guessing.
The use of poetry was such a treat and gave an added look into one of the main characters that is just top notch. On top of that, the dual narration really kept me hooked from start to finish.
I can’t wait for this to come out so I can get all of my friends to read it.
A big thank you to Random House Children's | Delacorte Press or providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The characters were written so well it felt like I knew them, they were messy, complicated, annoying at times, and made you feel empathetic to their struggles. I loved the split perspectives of before and after the disappearance from the different sisters. It made for a fun, fast-paced and easy read,
I love it this book so much . The plot twist was so unbelievable and I cant wait to this book to be realeased to the public
In this fast-paced YA suspense, 2 sisters go on a school field trip and only one returns. Grace is found with no memories of what happened to her sister Maddy. We follow dual perspectives as the reader and Grace try to figure what happened. The story had some decent twists and it was an easy and entertaining read but did not stand out.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's Delacorte Press for my arc in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
"Silent Sister" by Megan Davidhizar follows the disappearances of sisters Grace and Maddy, but when Grace is found and Maddy is still missing, things take a bit of a turn as Grace tries to figure out just what happened the night they went missing. And the catch? Grace can't remember anything from the week leading up to the disappearance.
I thought this was a quick little summer read. Is it amazing? Not really. Is it groundbreaking? No. BUT Davidhizar does a great job of exploring sibling relationships, friendships, and the ever challenging and confusing world of teenage friendships. The story is told in alternating narratives and timelines with one following Grace in the present and the other following Maddy in the week leading up to everything. I found myself really sympathizing with Maddy and later, Grace, but if you've ever been introverted, I do think this story kind of illustrates how problematic it really is to hold things in, people please at the expense of your own self, and how resentment can grow from that.
Overall, this is a fun summer spooker with the added sibling drama. I'd definitely recommend if you want something a bit lighter and just kind of mindless.
Grace and Maddy went missing and only Grace is found alive, though injured without a memory of the senior trip. Through a series of flashbacks and events occurring in the present, we are shown how both girls had secrets from each other and how those secrets lead to both of them being missing and only one being found alive. While the police investigation seems to be focusing on how Grace might have killed Maddy, she is desperate to remember the trip, sure in the fact that she did not kill her sister. Desperate, she seeks out classmates that she thinks might be able to help her, but most are either reluctant or they refuse to get involved. The more Grace continues to try to force her memory return, she starts to se that her life as she knew it, was not as it appeared to be.. Megan Davidhizar crafted to thriller full of twists, and clues, to make a a truly enjoyable read.
This story explores themes about relationships, friendships, and the importance of being truthful and honest communication, and young adults could benefit from these topics when reading this book. The twist could be seen from a mile away though.
I love a twisty mystery, and Silent Sister did not disappoint. I figured out some of the mysteries/twists but not others, so I enjoyed how it kept me guessing the whole way. I also liked the thought-provoking, emotional side to this story. That’s not something you often get in a thriller. Overall, a fun read, a great debut, and I’ll definitely read more from this author in the future.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Silent Sister is not your typical YA mystery book. It's a story about two sisters who go on their school's senior sabbatical trip and disappear one night. The next evening one of the sisters is found and the other one remains missing. What happens? What sister? You'll have to read it to find out.
I appreciated the techniques the author used by alternating the chapters between the two sisters and interspersing the one sister's poetry after her chapters. It did feel like it took a little bit for the story to kick into gear, but then the last 25% of the story was a rollercoaster that made it a compulsive read. Overall, I would recommend this one and it will make a good summer read.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book. I really loved the storyline and dual POV with the dual timelines. I did not see the twist coming and the book had me guessing all the way through. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys thrillers/mysteries.
