I will read anything by Karen McManus, so I eagerly grabbed Such Charming Liars.
This is the story of Kat and her mother--who are both skilled thieves. On the job that is supposed to be thier last, they encounter people from thier past lives. How can they pull this job off without being exposed?
There's a lovely story line of a brother/sister relationship as well as a romantic twist. Suspense was solid. Highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for allowing me to read an eARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Another fabulous twisty mystery from Karen. M. McManus! Told in 2 POV's (Kat & Liam)
Then:
Luke & Jamie met & married in Las Vegas. The marriage ended 48hrs later after Luke left the children (Kat & Liam) alone in the hotel room & they wandered off for hours.
Now:
Jamie is a jewel thief & Luke is a serial scammer. They both end up at billionaire Ross Sutherland's compound. Jamie is planning on stealing a ruby necklace from the the youngest Sutherland daughter, the same daughter that Luke is dating.
Kat has tagged along with her mother, and Liam has been dragged along with his father. When things start going wrong at the multi-day party, the teens must join together alongside Augustus Southerland (Ross's grandson) to solve a murder and protect Jamie from the mystery man who is trying to kill her. Along the way Kat & Liam reconnect as siblings & there is a budding romance between Augustus and Liam.
And of course - there is a classic “I did not see that one coming” Karen M. McManus twist at the end.
I will definitely be purchasing this one for my HS Library.
Content Warnings: Murder, Death, Physical violence, Domestic abuse (recounted), Attempted suicide, Catfishing
I always know a book by Karen M. McManus will be a good one! This started out a little slow, but as soon as it sped up, I could not put it down! It was riveting once it sped up a little. I need more of these characters!
In classic Karen McManus style, this book goes where the reader doesn't expect it. What seems like a book about jewel thieves turns into a mystery with so many twists and turns that will keep you guessing all the way to the end!
Another fast-paced, enjoyable YA Thriller from Karen M. McManus. I read this book cover to cover in an afternoon.
This storyline had all the twists and turns I would expect from reading several of this author's books. What sets this storyline apart I think is the really fun premise in which the mystery is set. Crime families, a heist, a surprise encounter with an ex stepbrother- it set the stage perfectly for a really intriguing read!
I would definitely recommend this book if you're a fan of the author or enjoy reading young adult thrillers.
Thank you Karen M McManus, Net Galley and Random House Children's - Delacorte Press for providing me with an ARC of this book!
3.5 stars - Overall, not a boring murder mystery but not a riviting one that I've come to expect from Karen McManus either. Though the climax was not predictable by any means, the lead up to it was a bit slow at points. It took me until about halfway through the book to really connect with the characters and about 60% in before I felt like it was a page turner. I would do anything for Liam, Kat is a brilliant and relatable narrator, and Augustus is the perfect completion to the trio.
So many of Karen McManus' books are popular and of great interest to Young Adult and Adult readers alike. Based on past works, one would think that this was going to follow the earlier works. It's difficult to write this, but it was awful. It took me a full twenty-four hours and a discussion with my co-librarian who had also read the book to realize why. There is not a single adult in this book that is likeable or redeemable. There is no "good guy". Hopefully, her next work will be up to her usual standards and have fuller characters..
I love reading all of this author's books. They are such fun mysteries with a great cast of characters.
I really liked the idea of con artists and jewelry heists mixed in with rich people and murder. It has all of the makings of a great book.
I loved Augustus and Liam. I mostly like Kat, but her "chaos" got a little frustrating at times. I think that was mostly because I'm an adult reading a book made for teens.
It all ties up at the end with a few good twists mixed in. There was almost too many twists, but I think it worked to keep the stakes high throughout it. The whole mystery wraps up, but it is left a little open ended for a sequel.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for letting me review this advanced copy along with letting me review it. Im a huge fan of the author Karen M. Mcmanus and have read most of her books. This is a great mystery with twists and turns everywhere that keeps you guessing. For most of Kat's life it was just her mom and herself. Jamie turns out to be a jewel thief. This was a good mystery and I hope everyone likes it as much as I did.
Easily my favorite Karen McManus book since One of Us is Lying/maybe it is my new favorite McManus book, actully. I mean, I love a good silly heist situation, and McManus delivered. The characters, the twists, all of it was great. I couldn't put it down. As with most of her books, you'll figure some stuff out early and then be GOBSMACKED by some other twists. It was also pretty eat-the-rich, and featured grifters who gotta grift which is the kind of content I'm VERY into right now. Anyway, though, I'd definitely recommend this book to fans of McManus' other works, or fans of heists that don't mind a bit of suspension of disbelief. I'm currently working with lower literacy adults, and I can see this being a great choice for them to read for pleasure. 5 stars - so much fun.
I devoured this. I read it in two days. I think it’s my favorite of her books so far (but I haven’t read a few of them yet).
This is super fast paced, it’s an easy read, and is full of twists and turns. I enjoyed the setting and even though Kat’s decision making could use some work, I liked the characters a lot.
Overall, this book was pretty good. However, most of the characters were one-dimensional. It is told in alternating points of view but I had a hard time keeping track of who was telling the story because there were very few distinguishing characteristics between Kat and Liam. Their manner of speaking was similar and their thought processes seemed parallel.
The book seemed hurried and like it was edited too much. There were things I wish had been explained better and if this book is for teens, I'm afraid some of it might be missed. There was one major plot point that I still can't figure out - perhaps that's my fault or perhaps it wasn't explained well.
I've read several of McManus's books and this is my least favorite.
First of all, thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Such Charming Liars. I am a Karen M. McManus fan, even when I'm able to guess some of the twists and turns her books may take, so I was excited for this one!
My excitement was not misplaced. Granted, I went into Such Charming Liars without re-reading the synopsis, so I was a little blind. I went from thinking this would be a pretty straightforward "thief with a heart of gold" story about a family completing a heist to thinking it was a story about getting out of "the life." Then I realized we were in a murder mystery, and the turns kept coming. There were a couple of points that I guessed, but the points I was surprised by more than made up for them.
This is a definite addition to my high school library, and I think it will almost certainly become a book club pick as well.
I love this author so much! Can you figure out the lies? Will Kat and Liam be in the middle of all this? This book kept me on my toes. I loved it so much! These lies with catch up with them. You will enjoy this book!
I have an ARC of this book but my opinion is my own.
First this isn't my usual genre and I've never actually read a McManus book until last year, and didn't get to finish it as I was reading someone else's copy while on vacation. This made me think of that and realize I need to finish it because I very much enjoy her writing.
First of all, her characters are great. They're not perfect, they mess up, but they're not annoying train wrecks either. Also while I'm usually not a huge fan of flipping the narrators, in this case it worked because they're very different voices and you wanted to see what was going on with both characters.
Second, I was impressed that for YA, it wasn't a case of no good adults in the room. It was a welcome change.
Finally, I can't believe that ending. Talk about a shocker! I found it believable and fun.
While this is the first Karen McManus book I've read, it won't be the last. She's definitely an author who crosses the YA divide. This was a clean book, nothing beyond kissing, but great for any age to read.
I didn’t live this as much as McManus’s other books. The mystery was interesting but with a large cast of family members it got a bit confusing. I also didn’t connect with the characters.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
In typical Karen McManus fashion, she blew me away with the storyline and character development. Kat and Liam, dragged along on their parents' ill-advised schemes, along with a friend, Augustus, are swept up into a heist that even the most storied Chicago gangster couldn't dream up.
The intrigue and convoluted nature of the storyline kept me guessing until the very end.
I liked the characters and parts of the plot. I felt having the mother be “unconscious” for almost everything felt a bit fake and there were just a few too many twists to be plausible.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Receiving an advanced copy was a delightful surprise. I believe both existing fans and newcomers will find it equally enjoyable.
Such Charming liars is a thrilling read! Kat, Liam, and Augustus are very likable as well. The story was fast paced with so many twists that I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. This book will become a favorite among Karen Mcmanus fans. Thank you Netgalley and Random House for the e-galley.
