Funny Story feels like a breath of fresh air. However, it feels mature and lighter yet witty and sensitive in many aspects. The banter and chemistry between the two main characters is fantastic. The struggles Miles and Daphne face feel real to the point I could easily relate to both of them. Daphne's struggles and the mother-daughter relationship were great as well. Emily Henry’s writing will always draw me in, and I will continue to read whatever she writes. A must buy for the library, and thank you for the ARC!
Emily Henry has done it again with Funny Story! This book is a perfect blend of wit, emotion, and brilliantly crafted characters that leap off the page. Henry’s trademark humor shines through, but it’s the depth of emotion and the subtle exploration of grief, love, and personal growth that truly elevate this story.
The protagonists are charming and relatable, navigating their own messy lives with a mix of vulnerability and resilience. The banter is sharp, the romance is swoon-worthy, and the friendships are beautifully nuanced. I absolutely adored Miles and Daphne, and there story just made me so happy to read. Miles is everything I want in a book boyfriend, and I found his character so lovable!
Henry balances lighthearted humor with poignant moments, creating a narrative that is as comforting as it is thought-provoking. If you’re a fan of stories that make you laugh, cry, and believe in the magic of human connection, Funny Story is an absolute must-read. I couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end. All the stars!
Thank you Berkley and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this book! Although I have only read later Emily Henry books, this one still made me cry. I loved all the characters involved and loved to see them all grow and change. Also I'm always a sucker for librarian representation!
Thank you to @berkleypub and @letstalkbookspromo for my copy 💙

Here’s your recommendation:
Funny Story is my new favorite Emily Henry book! I loved the story, connected with the characters, I laughed, teared up and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Daphne (a children’s librarian!) moves to her fiancé, Peter’s hometown and becomes imbedded into his family, his friend group, his home (theirs, but it’s only in his name 🤨). At his bachelor party, he decides he’s made a mistake and is actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Petra and Peter give Daphne the news and it’s time for her to move out. But where? How about Petra’s equally heartbroken fiancé, Miles? Especially since he’s got room in his apartment now 😢
Y’all, just take my advice and get this book.
The relationship chemistry is so good, the characters and side characters are hilarious.
I especially loved the settings -

Emily Henry does it again!!!
I love the way she writes her characters. They’re not caricatures or overly trope-y but they are also characters I strive to be.

Funny Story
Emily Henry

💔 Miles and Daphne are newly dumped and now roomies bc their exes got together!! like IMAGINE
💸 she’s a librarian (library love!!) and he works at a winery - lovedd getting to see their work life
📚 there’s a readathon and now I wish I had a readathon at the library as a kid
🥹 lovable characters, so easy to root for
📍Miles is set on making Daphne(&us) fall in love with this part of Michigan
so much to love: their chemistry!!! the hilarious writing, so many laugh out loud moments, this had me kickin my feet and gigglin’!! the fun is fun but the character development, the insecurities and self-doubt also felt so real and relatable. I think this hits the heart (in a good way) bc it was easy to see parts of ourselves in these characters💙
this is going in my comfort reads rotation🙂↕️🥰
555555/5 stars!!!! EmHen can do no wrong and I will literally read whatever she writes. The characters always feel so real and I always end up missing the characters and places I've never been. I will be rereading this so many times!!!!
“𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞‘𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐮𝐬, 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.”
The covers of Emily Henry’s books always have me so excited to discover what’s in-between them, and this was no exception. I couldn’t wait to see how it linked to the story.
Henry majorly delivers in this story; it’s easy to devour with loveable characters, humourous moments, and a swoon-worthy couple that you want to root for. I love a fake dating trope, and this one is a doozy: having to fake-date your roommate that you live with because your ex fiancé broke up with you for his best friend, who happens to be your roommate’s ex. Say all of that ten times fast! I loved that although the fake dating may have been the very beginning of the story, Henry took it down a path I didn’t expect at all, focusing more on Daphne building her life anew with friendships and a budding relationship with Miles, although I would’ve been ok with more ‘fake-dating to make their exes uncomfortable’ scenes. Henry’s humour shines, with witty one-liners “𝐈’𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐲-𝐬𝐢𝐱. 𝐈𝐟 𝐈 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐤, 𝐈 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭” and laugh-out-loud scenes (Daphne and Ashleigh visiting the wine bar the first time had me cracking up). Ashleigh and Julia are epic characters; I loved that Daphne opened herself up to letting people into her life around her, especially after realizing she’d just been slotting herself in ex’s Peter’s life and losing herself. Daphne is a loveable reclusive bookworm, while Miles is super observant, empathetic and tries to see the good in people; their banter together is EVERYTHING and I was highly invested in their friends-to-lovers relationship.
Funny Story is a story of new chapters, managing expectations, identity, found family and home. I adored Miles and Daphne’s story, and dare I say it ranks in top two Emily Henry books for me?! Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for the digital copy!
I seem to alternate how much I like each Henry book and after Happy Place, I think this was always going to be a win. I liked the banter, I liked the way the people matured over time and how it all worked out.
Always love a book by this author! Daphne the fmc starts the books off with the worst news so close to her wedding. The way dude told her and just expected her to be ok with it was infuriating.
Lucky for her there was someone else who got bad news and needed a roommate. Me trying to sum it up without ruining the secondhand betrayal.
Loved the fake relationship and dating, Daphne and Miles, were in so that their former partners would get jealous or stop pitying them.
They're progression from unlikely roommates, to fake dating to being serious was great.
Loved the end as well when someone thought they could just pick up where they left off. Why are people so insensitive and think they can just walk all over some people?
If there's one thing you can expect from an EmHen book, it's quippy Nora Ephron-esque banter that will make you laugh out loud. If there's two things you can expect from an EmHen book, it's quippy banter + an emotional growth arc that will break your heart and mend it again. This book delivered both in perfect measure. Exactly the book I needed at exactly the right time.
As a librarian, this book was written very accurately. I had to put it down at multiple points because it was hard to relax from work while reading about similar work situations. But if anything this showcases Henry’s ability to write relatable characters.
I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
Another laugh out loud, beautiful romance that was so ridiculous in the best way possible! Would this ever happen in real life? Maybe ... and if it did, I would want it to be written by Emily Henry.
There's not a lot I can write about Emily Henry that hasn't already been written, but this story yet another delightful addition to her oeuvre.
The one thing I will say, since this review is horrendously belated, is that Henry never fails to create scenarios and narrative threads that feel like fresh interpretations of tropes, while also honoring their predecessors. She will continue to be an auto-buy author for me.

oh my goodness, i honestly loved this book so much! i honestly related so much to both miles & daphne and just couldn't help rooting for these two!! their relationship just felt so organic and real. the plot was a little out there but it truly did just work so well. just two people who had a little growing up to do and found each other along the way. just perfection. probably my new favorite emily henry book!! 💙💙💙
Emily Henry...the queen that you are. It's hard to rank all her books, but I definitely enjoyed *Funny Story* more than *Happy Place*, though *Beach Read* and *People We Meet on Vacation* still hold the top spot in my heart. The premise of *Funny Story* was, well, funny (lol), and I loved seeing how common pains can bring our two main characters together.
This book leaned more into being plot-driven rather than character-driven, which was a nice change of pace. The humor and situations were playful and entertaining, making it a fun, engaging read. While I didn’t connect with the characters as deeply as in her other books, the witty banter and clever scenarios made up for it.
Overall, it was a lighthearted, feel-good story that I’d definitely recommend for anyone looking for a funny, fast-paced read. Emily Henry continues to deliver, and I’m excited to see whatever she writes next!
Another Emily Henry Banger! Seriously don't know how she does it. You would think after 4 contemporary romances novels, all being published relatively quickly, they would feel formulaic but she kills it again.
