thank you to NetGalley for this arc.

this story was beautiful. Daphne and Miles have my heart. this is the first book that I went into blind and honestly I think I want to do that from now on. I really enjoyed this book sm. There were moments that I felt like I could relate to Daphne.

Miles is everything. The things he did for Daphne had me melting. I loved their chemistry together.

Read this if you like :
- opposites attract
- forced proximity
- fake dating

I am so so happy Emily Henry went back to lake country where it all started! Funny Story is easily one of my favorite of her novels - it is up there with Beach Read for me - and I am so thankful and lucky to be able to read it early.

I anticipate some folks will get annoyed with our main heroine, Daphne. Homegirl has some issues - daddy issues, identity and self confidence issues - she's generally just trying to find herself after a major breakup. Our hero, Miles, is lost in his own way. And while, independently, I didn't love the two characters - they did truly shine together. (Personally, I love when characters are a bit lost and trying to find themselves - but again, can see how some readers may get secondhand frustration from them!)

Emily Henry has a way of writing scenes and dialogue that pulls at your heartstrings, makes you laugh, and, ultimately, root for her characters. These two grew on me and I loved it. I adore Miles and might even make an argument for him being my favorite EH hero.

I felt like the third act breakup and conflict could be a bit more fleshed out - but overall, I adored this book. I adore EH. And I cannot wait for others to read this bubbly, heartwarming story.

Thank you @berkleypub and @prhaudio for my complimentary digital and audio copies. My thoughts are my own.

This was my first book by Emily Henry and now I know I need to binge-read her backlist!

The wedding dress is bought, the wedding is planned and Daphne is all set to marry Peter. She has left her family and friends behind to start her married life in Waning Bay, Michigan, when suddenly Peter breaks up with her and leaves her for his childhood best friend, Petra. Devastated and with no where to go, Daphne moves in with Petra’s ex, Miles. At first, Daphne and Miles barely see each other, but gradually they become friends. One day when they run into Peter and Petra, Daphne finds herself declaring that she and Miles are now a couple!

I am not a huge romance reader, though I keep trying! What I enjoyed about this novel was that it was more than just your typical romcom full of awkward situations, laughs, and the dreaded miscommunication troupe. This story pulled at my heartstrings. Daphne is flawed and needy, just like any one would be in her situation. Miles makes for the perfect, if not also flawed, book boyfriend. Their romance was gradual, emotional, awkward, and fun. The secondary characters were also well-developed, imperfect people with needs of their own. This made for an enjoyable read that kept me thinking.
I love to alternate reading and listening to a book and the audio version was charmingly done by @justjuliawhelan. I recommend both the print and the audio versions.

Read (or listen to) this if you enjoy:
*Flawed characters
*Emotional stories
*Painful situations that are dealt with in sensitive ways
*Beautiful settings

Emily Henry we don’t deserve you. This book everything, I just love her. She’s been an auto buy author from me since 2020 beach read days, and every book just makes me feel one million feels. This isn’t book boyfriend, this is book husband material. I loved the summer and lakeside setting and everything clicked so well. The pacing was well and smooth and the build up just chefs kiss. Thank you for this ARC :)

Thank you to Netgalley, Emily Henry, and Berkley Publishing for an advance copy of Funny Story in exchange for an honest review. First off, this is an Emily Henry Stan account so I could not wait to get my hands on this book. As always, Henry delivers a fantastic story that I absolutely loved. Daphne & Miles are complete opposites that are thrown together in an unexpected way. Through ups and downs (in relationships, friendships, family, and her career) we see Daphne find herself and be the most authentic version of herself. I dont want to say much more because I NEED you to pick this one up too! Grab this if you love fun characters, fake dating, opposites attract, and books that deal with real inner life issues we deal with. You can grab a copy of Funny Story on April 23rd, 2024 anywhere books are sold!

I have to start by saying that I have the last four of Emily Henry’s books and was soooooo excited to receive a digital ARC for Funny Story!

Are you a fan of opposites attract, forced proximity, found family, book references and more? Look no further because I have a great read for you!

Daphne’s fiancee Peter dumps her for his childhood best friend Petra, after his bachelor’s party. Daphne’s left stranded in a new city without friends, family or even a place to live (or so she thought)….when she moves into Petra’s room and her ex-boyfriend - cue misery loves company? But you know that old saying “opposites attract,” well for Miles and Daphne it certainly wasn’t that from the get go - but they do devise a plan to get back at their exes!

This book is so bingeable and enjoyable - it will taking you on a journey just like all of Emily’s previous books. I found myself laughing and maybe a tear up or two. But Daphne and Miles aren’t the only lovable characters as Emily always writes excited supporting stars too! And with perfect pacing that never causes the story to drag, you cannot help but be totally sucked into this charming world she has created.

As a devoted Emily Henry fan, diving into the audio version of Funny Story was a treat I eagerly looked forward to. Emily Henry has a knack for crafting narratives that speak to the heart, and Funny Story is no exception. Julia Whelan's delivery perfectly captured the nuances of humor and emotion, making the characters leap off the page—or, more accurately, out of the speakers.
Henry's brilliant storytelling mixed with the superb audio execution made my workday fly by. The story's blend of heartfelt moments and witty dialogue felt incredibly relatable and kept me hooked from start to finish. Daphne's journey of love and self-discovery resonated deeply, but with light touch and humor.

I highly recommend the audiobook Funny Story by Emily Henry. It's a wonderful companion that entertains, uplifts and leaves you smiling long after you've listened to the last word.

5 bright stars from a fan.

To me, this book had so much promise and just… fell a little flat for me. It is rare for me NOT to give Emily Henry 5 stars, but this one just didn’t hit as hard as I thought it would. This book is still so great and I would recommend picking this one up. Miles and Daphne were put together by circumstances and rather than feeling like there was some kind of invisible string that tied them together, it felt like it was very much a “wow we fell in love just because we were around each other and were so emotionally vulnerable when we got together it just sort of seems the best that we stuck together” and to me, I felt that this book is a little bit more surface level than her other books and while that’s not always a bad thing, I felt that if the emotional parts of this book were explored a little deeper or maybe if I felt that the characters had a deeper connection, then I would have felt that this book would be a must read for everyone on the planet should read it. Not the worst book in the EmHen cannon, but not my favorite.

Thank you Berkley Romance and PRH Audio for my gifted copies. All opinions are my own.

It’s so hard for me to write a review for Emily Henry’s books because I just love them so much. I’ve loved all of her adult romances and this is definitely a new favorite! I alternated between the audiobook and the ebook. As always, Julia Whelan’s narration was absolute perfection. She is one of the only narrators where I don’t want duel narration because her male narration is so fantastic!

Daphne and Miles become roommates after their exes decide they’re meant to be together and get engaged. In a moment of panic, Daphne tells her ex that she and Miles are together. Emily Henry writes amazing male leads, but Miles was just incredible. He works as a bartender at a local winery, but knows absolutely everyone in their town. He takes Daphne on lots of weekend adventures and they become the best of friends and then more.

I just loved Miles and Daphne together. They have some interesting adventures as they create a little community of their own. I loved how they were there for each other and truly understood each other. I loved how everyone showed up for Daphne at her library fundraiser.

I love this so much that I’ve already read it twice. I will always be excited for more books from Emily Henry! (And obviously I have a copy preordered for my shelves!)

Emily Henry can do no wrong in my eyes!

Funny Story follows Daphne after her fiance, Peter, breaks up with her after his bachelor's party for his lifelong best friend, Petra. Afterwards, in an awkward phone call with Peter, Daphne lies and says she is dating someone new... Petra's ex, Miles. Though it starts off as a way to get back at their exes, of course Daphne and Miles' relationship evolves into something more!

Emily Henry's writing is so addictive to me. It is witty. It is romantic. It is touching. It is laugh-out-loud funny. Every page is a joy to read and this book was no different. Daphne's situation really resonated with me personally, which furthered my enjoyment.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed any of Henry's previous works, romance readers, and even some women's fiction fans. There's a lot to enjoy, and even if it's not a favorite, I imagine it will still be at least entertaining.

Absolutely amazing. Emily Henry is the queen of witty banter and creating characters that feel like they could be your friends in real life. Daphne and Miles were perfect foils to each other. The imagery of the setting on Lake Michigan makes me want to visit Lake Michigan. I laughed, I cried. The characters and their problems felt so relatable. I loved it!

No shocker here. I LOVED this book.

Daphne is my new favorite EmHen FMC. I enjoyed reading about her journey of finding herself again after putting her wants & needs aside for years. I would die for Miles, he must be protected at all costs. She once again writes characters so relatable & easy to root for, it's insane. I love her so much.

What I liked most:
+ opposites attract
+ sassy side characters (Ashleigh is the best)
+ actually laughing out loud
+ spice!!!!!!!
+ witty banter

This is marketed as fake dating, but I felt like it wasn't as prevalent in the story (which is totally fine). I would say it's more close proximity & found family-focused!

Emily Henry is back!

Funny Story sets the pace for yet another summer blockbuster from this author. The easy flow of her writing allowed me to settle in and just enjoy the lives of the characters as it came. Henry had a pulse on modern literature without feeling stuffy or pretentious. This particular story really makes me love a good friends-to-lovers book.

Thank you Berkeley for my advanced copy.

Daphne is dumped by her fiancé, Peter. He dumps her for his childhood best friend, Petra. Daphne is in a new city with no friends and is homeless so she moves into with Miles, Petra’s ex- boyfriend. Daphne and Miles develop a plan to make their exes jealous.

Emily Henry is the queen of banter and Daphne and Miles banter is perfection! Daphne is a quiet librarian and Miles is adventurous and outgoing. Their relationship is slow burn but it’s genuine and realistic with them first becoming friends. Both characters are multifaceted and well developed and their relationship makes me swoon. I loved their adventures and how they find comfort in each other after dealing with their breakups. If you’re look for a light hearted book that will put a smile on your face, read this one!

Is this my new favourite Emily Henry book? Probably. But is Miles my favourite Henry book boyfriend? Absolutely.

This book felt a little chaotic, but in the sweetest and most lovable way. Your heart just aches for both of the main characters. Henry just creates these beautiful, broken people that you totally relate to. I really associated with Daphne and her feelings of not being anyone's first choice and I think that made a huge impact on how much I loved this book and Daphne's story.

The premise of this story was interesting and honestly, quite cute. Overall, this story was okay but I'm not sure it was anything memorable. I couldn't really connect with any of the characters so that was a little disappointing. They just felt very common, sort of bland, and there wasn't enough from their relationship for me to become invested in them as a couple. Even during their conflict, I was sort of confused on why they handled it the way they did and was wondering where the communication was. I'm not sure I really liked Daphne; I just feel like there was no character development with her. Miles also felt like he was just... there. Despite all this, I do like Emily Henry's writing and I did enjoy the book for the most part. The story was well-written but personally, it was lacking some excitement.

4.4

Classic Emily Henry with banter that will make you chuckle and grin as you read.

I’ve read all of her books. Apparently, I was the only person disappointed in “Book Lovers”. It seems to “be resolved” halfway through and then just kind of coasted. The last book, “Happy Place”, was good, though I remember it being more of a tearjerker than others.

“Funny Story” is yet another book this spring where a deadbeat parent has scarred the life of their now-grown child. I’m thinking of “Nosy Neighbors”, “The Other Side of Disappearing”, “Just for the Summer”, “Off the Air”, “The Mystery Writer”, “The Paris Novel”, etc. That is not to say that these aren’t good reads. Some are even great reads.

I can’t imagine that all of those authors have colluded, so I won’t hold that against either Daphne or Miles, for that matter.

More importantly, they are currently thrown together because the loves of their lives, childhood best friends Peter and Petra, decided that they couldn’t deny their feelings and they needed to be together, despite already being in a long, committed relationship with Daphne or Miles. Daphne was even just weeks away from her wedding when her fiancé came to her and broke the news. She had moved with him to Michigan and assumed his friends, his family, and his new house.

Obviously, when Daphne Anne Miles and their broken hearts and a lifetime of baggage are thrown together, chaos ensues. As I said, the banter is worth the ride, and the supporting characters delight. It’s classic in the making.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Where do I even start?! Last summer I binged 3 of Emily Henry’s books and absolutely fell in love with her work. Needless to say, this was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and Emily Henry delivered! Miles quickly became one of my favorite book boyfriends, Daphne was so relatable - she had me in tears multiple times throughout the book, and together, these two opposites had great chemistry. Heartfelt and humorous, this is one you don’t want to miss when it releases April 23! 4.5⭐️
