This book was such a surprise, while I wholeheartedly went into reading this with the expectation of a big wedding fiasco of Miles and Daphne (fake) dating each other after their exes decided to get together and ruin their lives and drama coming down at the big wedding event… this book was so much more than that. With Miles wanting Daphne to fall in love with this place she moved to because of her ex, the new friends she’s made and the way that he showed her that she is indeed loved, melted my heart. Daph reassuring Miles that he can feel the worst parts and not deflect, that he’s happiness also matters aside from the sadness was so heartwarming. The love confessions had me weak at the knees and in tears.
I loved this book so much!
Whelp, she's done it. She can only go down from here.
Daphne, the female love interest, has uprooted her entire life to move to her fiance's small town of Waning Bay. Which would be her dream come true, to have a permanent home and family, if her fiance didn't dump her to run away with his childhood best friend. Now she has to find a place to live with only a week's notice in a town where the only people she knows are her now ex's friends and family. Enter Miles Nowak. Who has recently learned he needs to find a new roommate. Since it's his girlfriend that just ran away with Daphne's fiance.
Spoilers ahead:
I adored this book in a way I wasn't expecting. Emily Henry writes for the bookworm and librarian in all of us, but this one takes the cake. Daphne's adoration for her job as a children's librarian and Mile's wonder at her storytime voices. The way the book counts down to a particular library event is something every programmer will identify with on a deep level. But then you explore why books and libraries are so important to her and it feels like a little bit of my soul was exposed. Finding a home and solace in a good story until you can find a home in a person. And Emily Henry's characters are so beautifully created. These are not hallmark movie heroes with perfect lives and backstories. They are real. The love interest does not have his shit together in a way that is just all too right. The MC is this perfect mix of broken that is what you would actually see if someone where to loose their "happily ever after". The way you can see how these people fell into relationships with narcissist after learning more about their parents. And watching them heal in a perfectly unperfect way. I don't cry for books often anymore. When you read 150+ books a year, there's not a ton that really hits hard. But dear gods did this book hit me in the perfect place.
Much thanks to Berkley and Netgalley for an ARC of this title since I was chomping at the bit to read it ever since I read the synopsis.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for review.
This story has the classic Emily Henry feel, where you don't want to put it down. Out of all of her novels, this ends up falling into place as my least favorite but I don't intend that to be an insult. This book is still very good. I loved that there was a fellow librarian as the lead character. I eventually liked Daphne and Miles's story but I didn't love his character right away which is probably what makes me rank this book a little lower. This is still sure to be a hit with her fans and I'm happy that I had a chance to read it.
Another stellar read by Emily. Every time I finish one of her books, I think it's my new favorite and then I read her next new one... It's a vicious cycle. This has all of the elements of an Emily Henry romance; amazingly deep characters, witty banter, spicy times and a great story. Miles and Daphne may be my new fave couple...
Funny Story
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: 4/23/24
Thank you for the free book.
Emily Henry’s latest novel is an adorable romantic comedy following Daphne and Miles who both find themselves single once their partners leave them for each other. This story contains all the components of a light-hearted, cute story of love, self-discovery, and taking lemons and making lemonade. I giggled during several scenes and rooted for each of the main characters to find happiness.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for an ARC of Funny Story by Emily Henry.
Dare I say that this is my favorite Emily Henry book so far? I may be biased as the main character is a librarian, but I loved all of the characters in this one despite what their careers are. Ha. But five star read, for sure.
The love story in this one is very sweet, and I very much enjoyed the character development.
Funny Story by Emily Henry
.
“How did you two get together?” Hehe, funny story, but Daphne’s fiancé has left her for his old time friend and now Daphne is roommates with the other ex in this scenario.
.
What I liked:
-I mean, Emily Henry can do no wrong. I laughed, I cried, I didn’t want it to end.
-There’s always an emotional edge to Emily’s books and it really sucked me in on this book.
-I loved, loved, loved Daphne and Miles together. They went through the stages of grief together and their banter was excellent. Lots of cackling happened while reading this book.
-Daphne had great growth in her personal arc and I really admired her. The friendship she struck up with her coworker was really touching.

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This might now be tied for my favorite Emily Henry book with People we Meet on Vacation.
Of course I loved this. OF COURSE I DID.
Another beautiful and beautifully written story about not perfect people navigating life as best they can.
I love how EmHen writes her characters. Flawed and trying their hardest to find joy. Worthy of love no matter their traumas.
I adored Daphne and Miles, how could I not????!!!
I felt a physical pang in my chest and tummy when I finished the Funny Story because NOW WHAT?! now I have to wait for the next one well over a year :’)
I can’t wait to get my hands on this physical book!

I have one word to sum up my review: OBSESSED. This is officially my new favorite Emily Henry book, which says a lot because I loved People We Meet On Vacation.
Emily Henry always knows how to pull me in with her characters. This one had such a unique aspect, we’re familiar with childhood friends turning into lovers, but what happens to the love interests they leave behind? Well, this one portrays that so well.
Daphne and Miles were absolutely incredible characters, Miles was the sweetest hero I’ve ever read. I love how they end up fake dating and become roommates when their exes end up with each other. The jealousy in this book created by Daphne and Miles was *chefs kiss*, it was so funny seeing their exes get jealous - even though they’re the ones who left them behind.
The scenes here were so realistic, especially when it came to the friendships and side characters. I also loved how Daphne loved reading, and oh my goodness, the emotions surely came out. I was giggling throughout the book and swooning. The found family in this book was top-notch, along with the forced proximity (I mean come on, they become roommates). The pacing was absolutely perfect, there was never a dull moment and I was completely obsessed.
I was “patiently” waiting for this book to come out and when I was given an eARC, I immediately started it. I was engaged and the story was so beautiful. I can’t stop thinking about the chemistry between the two characters and their journey throughout. It was so heartwarming to see their growth evolve. Don’t even mention the ending cause oh my gosh, it was perfect.
Emily Henry may just be my favorite romance author because I’m completely obsessed with her writing. Her stories always seem so original, they have your typical tropes, but they have something so different and unique to them.
Funny Story they say, Emily Henry has done it again - but even better?!? I think so. I absolutely adored this book and these characters. This will be another hit by this author and I can’t wait to see other readers obsessing over this book as much as I did. Be on the lookout, Funny Story will leave you giggling.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Berkley for the review copy in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an electronic ARC of Funny People by Emily Henry.
If you have read any of Emily Henry’s books then you will love this one. Daphne’s fiancé leaves her for his best friend Petra and she finds herself living with Petra’s ex boyfriend. If you are a fan of roommates, friends to lovers and opposites attract, this will be the perfect book for you.
I did end up really liking this book, but for some reason it did take awhile for me to get into the book. Probably a me problem lol, but once I got about 30% into it, I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.
Emily Henry does it again!!! I LOVED this one! My favorite was Happy Place, then Funny Story, Book Lovers, Beach Read and People We Meet on Vacation.
A rom com with a children’s librarian main character?
An EMILY HENRY rom com with a children’s librarian character??
I knew I was sunk.
This book was so Jess-and-Nick coded. It was mature and understandable and full of found-family. I wish I could go ahead and put this book in everyone’s hands immediately.
Daphne & Miles worked through their issues (with, tiny spoiler, only a LITTLE miscommunication that didn’t happen until close to the end) and they were each so quirky and complex. I’m in love.
Fake dating + Forced proximity + Librarian main character = perfect romance for me
Emily Henry’s new romance gave me all the substance I crave in a romance, while also mixing in perfectly the butterfly feelings of a new relationship blossoming.
The messy start for these characters was spot on; I think it was an accurate representation of later in life romance, because life is messy.
The message that came across strongly is that you should not have to change who you are to be with someone. Daphne and Miles strike the perfect balance of individualism inside of a relationship.
I am so thankful to have gotten an ARC of this book – thank you Netgalley, Berkley Publishing Group, & PRH
Another great book from Emily Henry! I wasn’t a big fan of Happy People so I was a little hesitant going into Funny Story but Henry proved me wrong and reminded me why I love some of her books. It was funny, emotional, and depicted grief of a relationship ending in a real way.
Emily Henry, you've done it again. To say reading Funny Story felt like a warm hug is too cliche and does not do enough to let you know just how happy reading it made me feel.
As always, Emily Henry's characters are flawed in such a thoughtful way. I was rooting so hard for Daphne and Miles. Maybe Henry's steamiest book yet (though tastefully so. She really makes you earn the physical intimacy.) Yes I cried at the end. Happy tears! I'm only sad I finished it so quickly because it means I have to wait that much longer to read my next Emily Henry love story. Thank you so much Berkley and NetGalley for this early copy.
And in case you were wondering....my personal Emily Henry ranking post Funny Story (they are all winners to me)
1. Book Lovers
2. Beach Read
3. Funny Story
4. Happy Place**
5. People We Meet on Vacation**
I go back and forth on 4 and 5. Ask me again tomorrow.
Easy 5⭐️ I loved this book. This is one of those stories I will be gushing about for a while! It might even be my favorite Emily Henry book.
I’m obsessed with Miles, of course. I loved how there were aspects of found family and learning to be a “me” instead of a “we”. The two main characters have depth and are soo relatable. I know Emily does “relatable” really well, but these two really hit home for me.
I felt such a range of emotions throughout, and it made me want to call all the friends I fell out of touch with. I absolutely recommend this book, and Emily stays an auto-buy author for me.
Funny Story... I LOVED this book; Emily Henry has done it again!
Thank you Berkley & Netgalley for the free arc :)
Emily Henry is like my Taylor Swift of books, literally everything she writes hits me in my soul and makes me want to bawl my eyes out like there's literally no tomorrow.
I'm gonna sidetrack a little here but it'll be worth it! I'm currently binging New Girl (The Show) and I cannot express the New Girl vibes I got from this and the best thing about this parallel is that although they struck me to have the same vibe, they're also SOOOOO different.
Daphne is like the introverted version of Jess and Miles is the Golden Retriever version of Nick Miller HAHAHAHA. I could go on and share more details, but I do NOT want to spoil this wonderful book for you all.
Emily Henry in this book took an entire mallet and hit me in the chest an insane number of times, I nearly bawled my eyes out at work and in very public places, but I really think that is the beauty of her writing it feels like a weighted blanket in the best possible sense ever.
For this book, I really feel like Emily put her everything into the small details. Literally the number of times I pondered about the small details she put into this book is insane and even now that I have finished it I am still thinking about said details.
Emily Henry stans, I promise this book will not disappoint! I cannot wait for this book to be out and about in the world.
P.S. I need Emily Henry to stop writing books in which feel like they're exposing myself, I can only handle so much.
This book is AMAZING! The banter between the characters is awesome. I laughed, I cried, and the characters stole my heart right from the beginning!
I have finally read my favorite Emily Henry book. I enjoyed her previous work - I read them all and clearly asked for more. My biggest issue was that the conflict in her earlier books was way too small for the size of the feelings that her characters had experienced as a result. That often left me rolling my eyes and holding my appreciation for the characters in my hands like a traveler without appropriate luggage.
Emily Henry has established herself as a master of rom-coms. Her signature blend of wit, relatable characters, and swoon-worthy romance shined in "Funny Story."
The premise is intriguing - a jilted bride thrown together with her fiancé's best friend's ex in a small-town setting? Cue hijinks, witty banter, and unexpected connections waiting to blossom. Add in Henry's talent for crafting humorous yet heartfelt characters, and "Funny Story" is a laugh-out-loud rom-com delight.
The library, small town, and small place setting of it all made this book incredibly cozy. Reading during a snowstorm made it a perfect setting.
Thank you to Berkley for my ARC. This one is a gem.
I simply adored this book Emily Henry is a favorite, and this lives up to her best. There is nothing more satisfying than fake dating tropes done well, and this is done to perfection.
