emily henry’s writing cures everything 😭🩷 I absolutely adore her blend between romcom, serious relationship moments, and perfect side characters that have you DEMANDING for a spin off!!
it took a while for daphne and miles to grow on me, especially since they were thrust together in less than ideal terms (their significant others decided to dump them and date each other instead 🥴🥴) but I absolutely adore fake dating and relationship of convenience tropes, and miles works at a winery?? aka me?? goals
due to ✨ childhood trauma ✨ both miles and daphne have trust issues, which is a relatable concept, except for the fact that they both refuse to communicate about them!!! I loved how julia, miles’s sister, and ashleigh, daphne’s friend, became close in their mutual frustration over their brother and friends - because same ladies same 😅
I do have to agree with other reviews and say that this is one of emily henry’s hottest couples - the tension, the slow burn, the will they won’t they, it was all so perfect 😮💨 and when they finally did open up to each other, their talks were so healthy I wanted to cry because this is exactly what I’m looking for in a relationship!!!!!
what held me back from giving it a full five stars was the miscommunication. specifically that miles does something that he KNOWS is daphne’s trigger to her trauma, and while he doesn’t do it maliciously, he’s clearly an idiot for not understanding her anger. it just felt like all of their understanding got thrown out the window for the sake of a third act breakup 🙄
BUT I absolutely adored the characters, the setting, the writing - just everything that emily henry touches is gold thanks 🥰 and a huge thank you to berkley and berkley romance for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!!
rating: 4.5 stars
wine pairing: 45 north riesling (this is a combined brewery and winery in michigan and they have the most unique blends!! I can totally see miles working here!!)

Love love love this new one from Emily Henry! I wasn't a huge fan of Happy Place, but for me she's reclaimed the magic with this one. The ups and downs of Daphne and Miles's recovery from their partners' cheating alongside their own budding friendship and relationship felt so true to life. There's so much care and anger and humor, all in the right mix. Plus, she gets a lot of things right about children's librarianship!

Emily Henry strikes again! This one was better than the last as I felt there was such a strong romantic connection between the main character and the love interest. I extremely liked the perspective of Daphne as a librarian since I could connect with her experience. Daphne shares a glimpse to the daily life and duties of a librarian in a public library (even if it seemed to be a smaller library). The characters were well developed and their personal experiences were relatable. Yeah of course I was screaming at the characters because I wanted them to come together. Did I think they were being ridiculous, a little bit but their feelings were so deep that I felt them and understood. I absolutely loved the ending even if it wasn't what I entirely hoped, it was realistic but still super romantic - wish I would love to see more in the romance community.

Emily Henry can do no wrong!! I absolutely love her writing. She developed characters that are easy to connect with and you are rooting for. Loved this book along with all of her other ones!

I wasn't sure that the becoming roommates with your ex-fiance's new fiancee's ex-boyfriend would work as a great start to a novel, but somehow Emily Henry hit it out of the park. Not only that, but as a middle school librarian I completely fell in love with Daphne's job and how libraries were written into the story. The side characters were also really well developed in this story. Emily Henry is one of the best contemporary/romance fiction writers out there, and her latest novel will not disappoint!

I absolutely loved this book! It is Emily Henry's masterpiece. The characters are so accessible and it's such a feel good read. The story was fantastic. I loved how Daphne's and Miles' relationship developed. The town elements, charm, and friendships were delightful. I also loved how the book incorporated children's librarianship. This novel is now one of my all time favorites, and I will be recommending this read to all patrons.

This is the best Emily Henry book. After reading Book Lovers, I didn’t think I would ever love a book more but here we are. First it’s important to mention that I love Miles a scary amount. I will never get over the fact that he is fictional and I can’t have him for myself. Daphne is the most perfectly imperfect female main character and she embodies everything that I am and everything that I want to be.
An easy 5 stars and I feel honored to be alive at the same time as Emily Henry.

I have no words. Now, I’ve enjoyed Henry’s novels before. Loved them even. Really enjoyed them. Recommended to friends. But I wasn’t ever truly obsessed with them. I don’t know why this one hit way harder than the others, but it did. I’m obsessed with this novel.
This was clever, witty, amazing, beautiful, slow-burn, ironic, and poignant romance with a really purposeful, clear meaning that’s rife with humor. I loved it.
I’m not going to tell you a single damn thing about it except if you know what happened to Shania Twain (American singer) with her first husband, get ready for the rom-com non-celeb version.
This was phenomenal.

Funny story
Okay so I loved this book so much. I cannot wait to listen to the audiobook!! And I’m like 99% sure I’m going to have to reread this before April.
The tension, the longing, the unsureness, the roommates to lovers who are also the exes of each other’s exes so they’re going to try and get some type of revenge? I loved the setting, and the secondary characters! Everything Emily always writes is always so fleshed out and written so well.
It started a little slow, but it worked because Daphne and Miles’ friendship was a slow build in the absolute best way. They were thrown together in the crappiest of situations and then they were able to understand each other in a way they both desperately needed.
I loved how opposite they were but also they were just two people who never thought they were good enough. I love a ‘people always leave’ girl so much. And that is Daphne and I love her and her soft guarded heart so so much. I loved watching Daphne really find herself kind of for the first time. and Miles 😭 he is honestly the NICEST guy ever and it hurts that he struggles so much with trusting himself. But watching him figure it out a little bit, so he can really open himself up for Daphne was so sweet.
Also Miles semi demanding that Daphne FINALLY make Waning Bay her home because there’s no way her ex should have that much power over her?? To make her move there and then seemingly make her leave?? And Miles telling her that he’ll make sure she’ll fall in love with the town?? And then she not only falls in love with the town but ALSO with him?! He really created a HOME for her and it was what she needed 😭
As always I am DESPERATE for an Emily Henry book in dual POV. I would do anything for Miles’ POV. But then of course I would demand a POV for Alex, Gus, Charlie and Wyn and I know what seemingly to much to ask for. But there’s something about Miles that makes me want it a LITTLE bit more.
Thank you so so much to Berkley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!! I am GRATEFUL.

Funny Story is a comfort food type of book: funny, sweet and perfect for fans of classic rom-coms. Emily Henry delivers a humorous story of two broken hearted people who concoct a scheme that may or may not bring love back into their lives which is filled with laughs and some tears.

Emily Henry is that girl!! This book is easily my new favorite by her. I related a lot to the MMC and I really enjoyed the tropes in this one.

The Most Anticipated Romance Books of 2024
Funny Story by Emily Henry
Release Date: April 23 from Berkley Books
How is it that every Emily Henry contemporary romance sounds even more promising than the last? She leans full into screwball tropes with Funny Story, pairing up two reluctant roommates whose exes have fallen for one another: buttoned-up Daphne, stuck in Waning Bay, Michigan, after she followed fiancé Peter there, only for him to leave her for his childhood best friend Petra; and scruffy oddball-with-odd-jobs Miles, who takes her in.
It’s not enough for them to commiserate over their ridiculous rom-com situation, but of course they have to kick things up a notch by fake-dating—or at least making their awful exes think they are. I sped through this book in the last few days, and can confirm that it’s an excellent steamy slow burn about relearning how to believe yourself worthy of love.

Y'ALL EMILY HENRY IS THAT GIRL! This book had me kicking my feet and screaming into my pillow which I did not think was possible from an emhen book after the devastation that was Happy Place. I fell head over heels for this book and for Daphne and Miles' slow burn, mutual pining, friends to lovers relationship. They are so imperfectly yet perfectly made for each other and it makes me so giddy even thinking about them!!!!
They are THE opposites attract couple and complement each other so well. I found myself blushing over stolen moments and longing looks and ahhhhhh I could scream! Emily Henry just KNOWS how to navigate a good friends to lovers storyline and make it angsty and romantic and everything I need and more from a book.
You know what else Emily Henry is great at??? Making me cry!!!! I was straight up sobbing the last 15% of this book bc wow Miles is for real my everything. This man was just so GOOD. He is the meaning behind the word wonderful (iykyk) and the things he would say and do to Daphne.... I'd give up my whole life for him just to have him kiss my temple or wrap me a hug with his face buried in my neck or marry me lol
GOD I LOVE MILES NOWAK!!! The hottest bearded 36 year old bartender on this planet
The only reason this book is not a perfect 5 star is because the third act conflict ruined my life and miss communication will always piss me off.... but I digress, the resolution and love confession was chef's kiss with another iconic emhen "man down bad for his lady" line that will go down infamy alongside "when I look at you I feel overwhelmed that you exist" and "It's like you invented me" (another iykyk!!!)
Even though I didn't get that "5 star feeling" I still loved this book so much! That epilogue?? The last line?? Incredible!
Thank you so much to Berkley and NetGalley for this eARC! You're getting a big "muwah" from me

I’ve enjoyed Emily Henry’s writing since being an early reader of Beach Read. Since then her subsequent books are all invariably highly anticipated like the upcoming Funny Story. It did not disappoint.
The two MCs are so well developed and so relatable. Daphne and Miles are wonderfully complicated and, as in all of Henry’s books, when the two MCs get to talking - it’s dynamic, clever, and funny. They’re just so in sync and it’s wonderful to read.
Even the supporting characters - his sister, her work friend, her parents, especially her new stepmother Starfire - are delightfully drawn. Also the coastal town in Michigan adds requisite small town charm and quirkiness, but it never goes too far and becomes trite or cliché.
And just like Beach Read and Book Lovers the main character Daphne, a children’s librarian, is an unabashed book lover and that’s so much fun to read.
Thank you NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

As always, a home run for Emily Henry! Loved this second chance romance. It had heart, depth, and such swoon worthy love. A must for any collection!

A beautiful blend of romance and humor! I recently stumbled on Emily Henry and am now a fan. This is the story of Daphnae and Miles--two dumped people who end up living together under happenstance. The story was funny and gut wrenching. Loved every minute of it!

I screamed when I was approved to read this book! It will be my entire personality and I will tell anyone who will listen that I read this book early.
This trope or meet cute is so out there but it works!!! The tension between Daphne and Miles was sizzling. They were in a pressure cooker most of the book and I love it!
I thought this story was different than Emily’s other titles. There is a lightness and steadiness about this book. These two find a friendship first while also exploring a romance. I really loved reading their dialogue. Daphne finding herself outside a relationship is so important for women to read. Being a me first, instead of a we.
The steam in this book!! The movie make out scene was top notch!!
Thank you for letting me read this early!

Sign me up for any book about a librarian and this one is adorable! Daphne is having a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad 108 days after her fiance abandons her alone in his small MI town after breaking off their engagement for his long-time bestie, forcing her to move in with the equally-dumped man on the other side of this equation. When invitations arrive for Daphne and Miles to the wedding of their prior fiances, they pretend to be dating to prove that they're fine. This is my favorite Henry book to date and I can't wait to recommend it at every opportunity. A huge thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for the early access in exchange for my honest opinion.

Have you ever asked someone how they met and they tell you "funny story..."
Daphne thought she was happy with Peter. They'd met in the park when her hat blew away and he'd caught it and that was it. She loved his family, loved their couple friends, even tried to win over his best friend since childhood (platonic he promised) Petra. She was happily engaged. That is until Peter dropped a bomb on her- he realized he's in love with Petra that they're in love with each other and are going to be together. Which on top of everything meant Daphne has nowhere to live.
But since Petra was moving in with Peter that meant she was moving out of her boyfriend Miles' apartment. Though she'd only met Miles a handful of times, Daphne was desperate, plus she figured she's probably the only person who knew what Miles was going through right now. So she asked Miles if he could use a roommate. At first they coexisted like shadows in the night, each barely saw the other. But somewhere along, it was bound to happen, they bonded over their heartbreak and a friendship sparked. When their exes got the impression that Daphne and Miles were together, who was Daphne to correct them? She definitely wasn't above making Peter jealous, and Miles was happy to do the same to Petra. When did the lines start to blur? When did Miles become this incredible guy that Daphne couldn't have?
This was signature Emily Henry written with humor and wit, tugging at your heartstrings in all the right places. If you've never read one of her books, now is the time to start! And if u have, you'll see that this one does not disappoint. Emily has this way of subtly layering all her characters, peeling them back for u at just the right pace, creating fireworks when the leads are finally lead to each other. Her characters are flawed and likeable and imperfectly perfect, you just can't help falling in love with them and feeling all the feels in the best way. Absolutely loved it (like I knew I would ;)

What to expect
- Character driven
- Single POV
- Book vibes
- Found family
- Female friendships
- Fake dating
- Cute banter
I’ve read all of Emily Henry’s books and I’ve found they tend to be hit or meh for me. This book fell into the meh category 😬. I absolutely loved Miles (MMC) and the banter between characters made me lol. I also loved the Michigan setting and all of the supporting characters. This was extremely character driven and while there were some interesting plot points, they kind of just fizzled out. The fake dating aspect really drew me in but half way into the book it stops being mentioned? Toward the 70% mark I started to feel bored because nothing is really happening other than the FMC verbosely complaining to herself. I think a dual POV from Miles would have made this better from me. I have no doubt the Emily Henry girlies will love this one. It just wasn’t for me 🥲
