Emily Henry can do no wrong. I adored this book!! Not my all time favorite, Book Lovers still holds that spot, but still amazing!
I have read early copies of every single Emily Henry book, and I've loved them all in different ways. None of them have yet to top Beach Read for me, though...until this one. I'm shocked! I flew through this and just loved it. As a Youth Librarian, I was on-guard for how we'd be represented in this story but I felt like she did it well. While there's no Summer Reading Program (which felt weird), there was a big event the library was working toward at the end of the summer.
I loved Daphne and Miles and the epilogue was *chef's kiss*.
Emily Henry is one of few authors I absolutely know I will love before I read a single word. This one actually read much more like a typical romance than her other work, but of course its Henry so her characters were so perfect and actually realistic, so good! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
holy shit!!!!!!!! this book was literally everything to me. I was so nervy to start it just bc I always have such high expectations for emily henry but wow did she show me!!!! from the jump I literally could not stop laughing. like emhen was drinking the SILLY juice when writing this. I loved both daphne and miles from the JUMP. both of their characters were so fun and intriguing. I love how they both felt so REAL. like I loved everything about them 😭 they were funny, flawed, and broken. but they were both so caring and special. miles was so sweet and you could just see how much he cared for daphne!!! there were so many small mundane moments between the two that just made me want to BURST. bc at their core they truly understood each other and isn’t that all we really want in life 😭.
I loved seeing daphne’s character growth journey. she’s been through a lot in her life in general and then recently with her break up. and she’s feeling a little unsteady navigating everything and figuring out who she is as an individual. I loved seeing her take charge of her life, find her place and find what makes her happy. so many small elements of the story warmed my soul like her creating a good relationship with julia, miles’s sister. and finally becoming friends with ashleigh— making mistakes in that friendship but working through it and coming out even stronger.
I loved how as daphne and miles were learning more about one another they were falling more and more for their quirks and little details they’ve learned through living together. sweet things like miles seeing how passionate daphne is about her job at the library. and daphne admiring how charming and likable miles is to everyone in town. like he is truly so charming that man would charm my pants off for real!!! I loved seeing how miles wanted to make daphne fall in love with the town. he wanted to make it a place she felt she could stay and not think she had to leave bc peter tainted it. and she really did fall in love with it and ultimately made it her home 🥹
I truly never wanted this book to end. I could read about miles and daphne doing mundane shit forever. like just install a camera in their living room and let me watch the live stream tysm!!!! anyways read this book!!!! you won’t regret it. it’s funny, it’s emo it’s goofy as hell and a certified good time. tysm to berkley romance and netgalley for the arc fr ilysm!!!
Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for providing a DRC of this title for review.
After being invited to her ex-fiance Peter’s wedding to his childhood best friend, Petra, orderly, controlled librarian Daphne impulsively accepts the invitation and says she’ll be attending with her new boyfriend, Miles— Petra’s ex and her roommate since they were both dumped by their respective partners. When summer adventures in their coastal Michigan town lead to friendship and then maybe something more, Miles and Daphne must determine whether their romance was just for show or if they’ve built something to last.
I finished Funny Story two days ago, and I haven’t wanted to start anything else since then because I don’t want to leave the world of Waning Bay. From the characters to the world-building to the chemistry to the pacing, this was such a satisfying read for me! Plus, I’m definitely biased, but I loved Henry’s tribute to the strange, beautiful world that is public libraries in Daphne’s career as a children’s librarian.
In my personal opinion, this is the most romantic of Henry’s books and is in fierce completion with Book Lovers for my overall favorite of her works. 5 stars/5, and I look forward to gushing about this one with patrons for years to come!
Emily Henry does not miss. If you’re looking for a feel good romance where two people come together to overcome their trauma, this book is for you.
Emily Henry does it again! Her books have the best banter and characters that you fall in love with. Daphne is heartbroken after a broken engagement. Her fiancé Peter dumps her for his childhood best friend, Petra.
Stranded in Waning Bay, Michigan, with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and roommates with Petra’s ex, Miles- Daphne starts to learn about herself and fresh starts. This is a great one!
somewhere i read a review that said that this book is HORNY and i can not think of a better way to sum up funny story - crocs and all. it was hot. the tension. the friendship. the spiciness. I LOVED THIS BOOK !!!!
EH can do no wrong (obviously) and not that her books feel like they are ever missing anything, but this book had something in it from her that i didn’t even know i needed.
roommates, forced proximity, more than just a romance (so much about friendships & healing from childhood trauma), small town vibes, a lot of making out, the cutest little librarian, and one of the sweetest men you will have the please of meeting ♥️
Loved this book! Emily Henry can do no wrong. Another easy beach read and would definitely recommend this to a friend.
Emily Henry somehow gets more honest and more vulnerable with every book that she writes. Funny Story, despite its title, is deeply emotional and focuses a lot about how parental relationships can affect future friendships and relationships later on. It was addictingly good and sexy as hell. I would go as far to say it is Emily Henry's smuttiest book to date and I love her for that.
This was so so fun, a true to form quirky rom-com unlike anything EH has published so far. More focused on the romance than her previous works, while still containing some of that depth we all know and love. Really hot, too! 🤭
The beginning made me nervous because the style is ever so different to what I’m used to from her, but I was all the way pulled in by the 30% mark and simply could not put it down. Another masterpiece from the queen, in my humble opinion!
Never have I ever read an Emily Henry book that I didn't absolutely love with all of my heart.
Honestly, there's nothing I can say except the fact that her books... in my opinion.. are for everyone. There is so much to love. This also made me so angry for Daphne and Miles but I loved them so much. I wish I could reread Emily's work for the first time again. Before I read this, I read a review saying that the mc was Nick Miller coded and that's when I learned how quick I'll drop everything to read this book. I felt healed, rejuvenated, and basically cried several times (it's not sad, I'm just a baby).
You'll love this book. If you don't.... don't tell me why.
Emily Henry delivers once again!!! I absolutely loved this book!
This book made me laugh and swoon so hard!! Emily Henry has a way of writing perfectly imperfect characters who fall in love and complete the other, Daphne and Miles being no different!
I adored them both and I loved how their relationship began as a friendship and blossomed. Daphne has lived her life wanting to feel like a priority and not a choice and I loved going on this journey with her navigating that and overcoming it and to just be with Miles.
Miles sweet Miles the man that you are!!! I adored him so much! He had his own personal struggles and how he saw himself and how that affected his relationships but seeing how loved and seen he felt with Daphne oh my heart!!!
This book was everything from the side characters, the love confessions (🥹!!), the banter!! Such a great book and another instant favorite book for me! I loved it so much!!
Thank you for my free ARC @berkleypub #berkleypartner #berkley
After not enjoying Book Lovers very much and skipping Happy Place last year (it's on my summer 2024 tbr), I was curious about Funny Story. When I received the e-ARC, I immediately started it and I am so glad I did! I was hooked from the beginning. This is a steamy forced proximity romance about exes getting revenge by fake dating. I loved Daphne and Miles! Their chemistry was spot on. The plot moves in a good pace and the side characters are great. I don't want to give away too much but I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a fun romance. 4⭐ with 2🌶️
Funny Story comes out April 23! Be sure to add it to your summer reading list ✨
Funny Story is one of my most anticipated reads of 2024 and you know Emily Henry does not disappoint.
Briefly this novel is about a pair of opposites with the wrong thing in common.
A librarian romance?!?! Yes please! Daphne and Miles are the down on their luck after break ups and they end up becoming roommates. In true opposite attract form they develop an unlikely friendship. Let me tell you that Emily Henry’s writing takes you on a slow burn journey from friends to romance. The way Miles is just the sweetest to Daphne warmed my heart. I also identified with Daphne’s daddy issues 🤣 There are no stops on this family drama train. I love how Daphne found her voice and her place in the little town of Waning Bay, Michigan. This story felt a little more emotional to me as it did not have as much banter as her previous books. Still a very enjoyable read!
Thank you Net Galley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
First, let me just say I am absolutely shocked that I would ever give an Emily Henry book less than 5 stars. She is one of my all time favorite authors so I’m so surprised.
As a Northern Michigan native (Petoskey 🩷) I loved all of the references to true Up North culture. Fudgies, sleeping bear dunes, cherry festival, Mackinac, etc. were all so nostalgic and homey for me.
This book is definitely character driven and not plot driven. I found the plot lacking. There were a few plot lines or tropes that were set up in the beginning of the book that sort of fizzled out. I didn’t feel like there was a driving goal or conflict. I didn’t feel like enough “happened”.
I really enjoyed Daphne and her characters growth and character development. She has to rebuild her life on her own terms and find a new family in the process. The found family in this was more interesting than the romance of this book.
I didn’t find Miles very likable. It’s personal preference but the stoner persona is such a turn off for me. I found him apathetic and he wasn’t a character I could ever swoon over.
Overall, I really enjoy Emily’s writing style. I always do. She always makes me legitimately laugh out loud, including this book. But I didn’t find the plot compelling and the characters weren’t ones that I could fall in love with and dream about for days like I do with her other books.
I absolutely adored this book! From beginning to end I was invested in the story and feeling all the emotions. By far Emily Henry's funniest book, in my opinion. The banter between Daphne and Miles had me giggling and the whole cast of characters brought me so much joy. Daphne's character was so relatable and I loved the opposites-attract dynamic she had with Miles. This book gave me everything I want in a story, I laughed, I cried, I believed in their love, and I wanted that love for myself. Can't say enough good things.
funny story is told from the pov of daphne, a librarian that got dumped by her fiance peter the day after his bachelor party, where he realized he was actually in love with his best friend petra, who confesses that she loves peter during the bachelor party (because of course he invited his best friend to it). the same petra that has a boyfriend, miles. when peter comes back to daphne in their shared home after the party and gives her a week to move out, faced with no other option, daphne asks miles if she can move into his apartment.
funny story does a great job characterizing both daphne and miles, and i loved reading about them as people as much as i did with the romance. daphne was raised solely by her mother and despite being too cynical, she moves in with peter early in their relationship, so when it all comes crashing down around her, she's forced to evaluate how much of the relationship she actually wanted.
everything daphne really knows about miles is what peter's told her about him. no college degree, does odd jobs, smokes a shit ton of weed (all of which petra does too but peter never talks bad about her. maybe that should've been a red flag). after cohabitating for a few weeks, daphne learns that 1. peter doesn't smoke daily and 2. he not only has a steady job, he's actually great friends with tons of people around their michigan beach town. she's is counting down the days until she can move out of the city she only moved to for the sake of peter, when miles suggests that she make the town hers. after all, she knows nothing about the town she's lived in for close to three years!
after a drunken rsvp to peter and petra's wedding, daphne tells peter that she's dating miles in order to avoid the pity from him. peter's disbelief only solidifies both daphne and miles' decision to continue to fake date to piss off peter and petra.
i love daphne's exploration of both single life in her thirties, and trying to make the town feel like hers. she feels like she lost her only friend and struggles to make new ones. miles seems a little more adjusted, but the two of them are sad and wallow together, developing into a friendship.
i love how the romance developed and the story just felt so real and painful that i was full on sobbing at parts of the novel. most of the novel. i wont spoil anything because the book doesn't come out for months, but this is my favorite emily henry novel by far and i *know* this is going to be one of my top books of the year. i seriously cannot recommend this book enough. i loved every part of it and the ending was absolutely perfect - i want the words injected into my bloodstream,.
Always the best chemistry in these books, lots of buildup and good banter. I never like librarian characters but finally here is one I can get on board with.
INCOMING: a new book boyfriend reigning superior
this might be a controversial opinion after the book comes out due to emily henry’s incredible backlist but….. my new favorite romance from her. this book just made me so happy like i was kicking and giggling the whole time, never wanting the feeling to end. from my home state of michigan setting, miles my stoner and winery bartender🤎, the fact that i related way too deeply to the fmc daphne, everything was perfect. my new favorite romance? yes.
