Never have I ever read an Emily Henry book that I didn't absolutely love with all of my heart.

Honestly, there's nothing I can say except the fact that her books... in my opinion.. are for everyone. There is so much to love. This also made me so angry for Daphne and Miles but I loved them so much. I wish I could reread Emily's work for the first time again. Before I read this, I read a review saying that the mc was Nick Miller coded and that's when I learned how quick I'll drop everything to read this book. I felt healed, rejuvenated, and basically cried several times (it's not sad, I'm just a baby).

You'll love this book. If you don't.... don't tell me why.

Emily Henry delivers once again!!! I absolutely loved this book!
This book made me laugh and swoon so hard!! Emily Henry has a way of writing perfectly imperfect characters who fall in love and complete the other, Daphne and Miles being no different!
I adored them both and I loved how their relationship began as a friendship and blossomed. Daphne has lived her life wanting to feel like a priority and not a choice and I loved going on this journey with her navigating that and overcoming it and to just be with Miles.
Miles sweet Miles the man that you are!!! I adored him so much! He had his own personal struggles and how he saw himself and how that affected his relationships but seeing how loved and seen he felt with Daphne oh my heart!!!
This book was everything from the side characters, the love confessions (🥹!!), the banter!! Such a great book and another instant favorite book for me! I loved it so much!!

Thank you for my free ARC @berkleypub #berkleypartner #berkley

After not enjoying Book Lovers very much and skipping Happy Place last year (it's on my summer 2024 tbr), I was curious about Funny Story. When I received the e-ARC, I immediately started it and I am so glad I did! I was hooked from the beginning. This is a steamy forced proximity romance about exes getting revenge by fake dating. I loved Daphne and Miles! Their chemistry was spot on. The plot moves in a good pace and the side characters are great. I don't want to give away too much but I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a fun romance. 4⭐ with 2🌶️

Funny Story comes out April 23! Be sure to add it to your summer reading list ✨

Funny Story is one of my most anticipated reads of 2024 and you know Emily Henry does not disappoint.

Briefly this novel is about a pair of opposites with the wrong thing in common.

A librarian romance?!?! Yes please! Daphne and Miles are the down on their luck after break ups and they end up becoming roommates. In true opposite attract form they develop an unlikely friendship. Let me tell you that Emily Henry’s writing takes you on a slow burn journey from friends to romance. The way Miles is just the sweetest to Daphne warmed my heart. I also identified with Daphne’s daddy issues 🤣 There are no stops on this family drama train. I love how Daphne found her voice and her place in the little town of Waning Bay, Michigan. This story felt a little more emotional to me as it did not have as much banter as her previous books. Still a very enjoyable read!

Thank you Net Galley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

First, let me just say I am absolutely shocked that I would ever give an Emily Henry book less than 5 stars. She is one of my all time favorite authors so I’m so surprised.

As a Northern Michigan native (Petoskey 🩷) I loved all of the references to true Up North culture. Fudgies, sleeping bear dunes, cherry festival, Mackinac, etc. were all so nostalgic and homey for me.

This book is definitely character driven and not plot driven. I found the plot lacking. There were a few plot lines or tropes that were set up in the beginning of the book that sort of fizzled out. I didn’t feel like there was a driving goal or conflict. I didn’t feel like enough “happened”.

I really enjoyed Daphne and her characters growth and character development. She has to rebuild her life on her own terms and find a new family in the process. The found family in this was more interesting than the romance of this book.

I didn’t find Miles very likable. It’s personal preference but the stoner persona is such a turn off for me. I found him apathetic and he wasn’t a character I could ever swoon over.

Overall, I really enjoy Emily’s writing style. I always do. She always makes me legitimately laugh out loud, including this book. But I didn’t find the plot compelling and the characters weren’t ones that I could fall in love with and dream about for days like I do with her other books.

I absolutely adored this book! From beginning to end I was invested in the story and feeling all the emotions. By far Emily Henry's funniest book, in my opinion. The banter between Daphne and Miles had me giggling and the whole cast of characters brought me so much joy. Daphne's character was so relatable and I loved the opposites-attract dynamic she had with Miles. This book gave me everything I want in a story, I laughed, I cried, I believed in their love, and I wanted that love for myself. Can't say enough good things.

funny story is told from the pov of daphne, a librarian that got dumped by her fiance peter the day after his bachelor party, where he realized he was actually in love with his best friend petra, who confesses that she loves peter during the bachelor party (because of course he invited his best friend to it). the same petra that has a boyfriend, miles. when peter comes back to daphne in their shared home after the party and gives her a week to move out, faced with no other option, daphne asks miles if she can move into his apartment.

funny story does a great job characterizing both daphne and miles, and i loved reading about them as people as much as i did with the romance. daphne was raised solely by her mother and despite being too cynical, she moves in with peter early in their relationship, so when it all comes crashing down around her, she's forced to evaluate how much of the relationship she actually wanted.

everything daphne really knows about miles is what peter's told her about him. no college degree, does odd jobs, smokes a shit ton of weed (all of which petra does too but peter never talks bad about her. maybe that should've been a red flag). after cohabitating for a few weeks, daphne learns that 1. peter doesn't smoke daily and 2. he not only has a steady job, he's actually great friends with tons of people around their michigan beach town. she's is counting down the days until she can move out of the city she only moved to for the sake of peter, when miles suggests that she make the town hers. after all, she knows nothing about the town she's lived in for close to three years!

after a drunken rsvp to peter and petra's wedding, daphne tells peter that she's dating miles in order to avoid the pity from him. peter's disbelief only solidifies both daphne and miles' decision to continue to fake date to piss off peter and petra.

i love daphne's exploration of both single life in her thirties, and trying to make the town feel like hers. she feels like she lost her only friend and struggles to make new ones. miles seems a little more adjusted, but the two of them are sad and wallow together, developing into a friendship.

i love how the romance developed and the story just felt so real and painful that i was full on sobbing at parts of the novel. most of the novel. i wont spoil anything because the book doesn't come out for months, but this is my favorite emily henry novel by far and i *know* this is going to be one of my top books of the year. i seriously cannot recommend this book enough. i loved every part of it and the ending was absolutely perfect - i want the words injected into my bloodstream,.

Always the best chemistry in these books, lots of buildup and good banter. I never like librarian characters but finally here is one I can get on board with.

INCOMING: a new book boyfriend reigning superior

this might be a controversial opinion after the book comes out due to emily henry’s incredible backlist but….. my new favorite romance from her. this book just made me so happy like i was kicking and giggling the whole time, never wanting the feeling to end. from my home state of michigan setting, miles my stoner and winery bartender🤎, the fact that i related way too deeply to the fmc daphne, everything was perfect. my new favorite romance? yes.

Emily Henry always kills it with the banter! I loved the characters she created here. I tend not to be able to laugh a lot during romcoms but I laughed so much while reading this story! I was completely obsessed with it.

Thank you to NetGalley for the Arc of Funny Story. As a children's librarian, this book really hit the spot for me. The main character, Daphne was lovable and relatable. The story itself was somewhat predictable but thoroughly enjoyable. I finished this book in 2 sittings and loved every second. I always look forward to another Emily Henry story.

This book takes place in a tourist city in Michigan and I couldn’t help but want to live in the pages and spend some time on the lake. In this roommates turned lovers novel we find librarian Daphne finding her fiancé has left her for his best friend. She moves in with the best friend’s ex, Miles, and he shows her the beauty of her new home as they get to know one another. It was a fun journey getting to follow along!

Full of banter and a sweet love story, this is Emily Henry at her best! Also loved the meditations on friendship and holding onto your own identity when you enter a relationship.

Funny Story. Best EH Book yet.
Ever wish you could crawl back into one of your favorite comfort shows and just live there for a bit? That is what Funny Story was for me. It was the best combinations of New Girl, a dash of Gilmore Girls, a sprinkle of Emily in Paris, and a few tablespoons of the rest of my faves. It was as if Emily Henry took the best ingredients and tropes to bake the best of rom-com cookies. I didn’t even think all of the elements in Funny Story would mesh well, but EH is a pure genius in creating this warm hug of a book.

emily henry has done it again. this book reminded me of why i love to read. the attention to detail within the story was something that will had me from the beginning. miles and daphne are my second favorite couple that’s she’s every written and that is a HIGH BAR to reach. the side characters in the story really brought it to life. what a pleasure it is for the world to have this masterpiece bestowed on them. the romance is soooooo beautiful like i wont be recovering from them anytime soon. emily did her big one with this one. i don’t wanna spoil much but this book? this is the one.

Is there ever a time when I won't believe Emily Henry doesn't have spy cameras throughout my house, or agents digging into my background? I joke with all my friends about how real and amazing all the characters feel like part of my life is in these books. This is no different for Funny Story. I am a librarian, in Maryland, raised by a single mom who worked in banking and tried her hardest to give me the best life she could. I read this book while I was sick with COVID-19 and kept going back and rereading pages because it would take my breath away. And Emily, if you ever need to know more about a 30-something-tall girl married to a shorter dude-librarian-hobby potter, reach out. I'd love to chat.

Oh my! I loved this so much. I'm a hit or miss EmHen fan and this was exactly right. Full review to come closer to publication but I can safely say this will make all the Emily Henry fans out there very happy.

Another solid Emily Henry book! As a children's librarian, I was hoping for more from that aspect of the story. I wanted to see a more accurate depiction of the library and its happenings within its day to day operations. That said, overall the story was cute and charming and everything you come to expect from an Emily Henry novel.

Thank you Berkley Publishing for the free book! #BerkleyPartner

I saw something a while ago say that you are either a Beach Read and Book Lovers person or a People We Meet on Vacation and a Happy Place person. I am the former and have wondered where Funny Story would fall.

As always, Emily Henry makes the settings of her story feel like a character in and of themselves and it’s incredible how she can paint such a beautiful picture with her language and the way she writes.

First, the story. The fiance falling for the girl-best friend who he told her not to worry about… we’ve heard it before but it still worked and Henry did it so well. Then, the fiancé and boyfriend who were left start living together and fall for each other. So simple but so compelling and you know exactly how it will end but you still want to see it through.

Daphne and Miles are so wonderful and such complex characters. I felt like I knew them as well as they knew each other. Daphne is a children’s librarian and at the end of the summer is hosting a read-a-thon for the library goers, an event she enjoyed as a child. We learn so much about her and her ability to love, her overcoming her cynicism, and her realizing that she is worthy of so much more in her life. Her dad was not around a lot when she was a kid and she always felt second best to anything else he had going on in his life and she was. He would take her to the library (where her love for libraries developed) and he would be flirting with the librarian instead of hanging out with her. He gave her such a negative view of herself and what she meant to others. And she and her mom used to move around a lot so she ended up not trying to hold on to friendships and eventually just fell into her ex-fiancee's life instead of creating her own. She understood that by the end she needed to be more independent and stop just relying on someone else to make her friends, buy her house, and create her happiness. I love that she finds friends and a community in Waning Bay. I loved Daphne and related to her a little too much. Miles was a little rough around the edges at first but we learn so much about him and his love for just about everything. He also has issues stemming from his parents and was faced with how he didn’t feel his feelings because his mother made him feel like everything wrong was always his fault. He did piss me off when his excuse for freaking out when things got serious between them was I panic when things get real, what does that even mean?

The side characters were also incredible and Henry always seems to write such great side characters that genuinely add something to the story. Even Peter and Petra who were the villains of the story added so much even when Peter pissed me off by coming crawling on his knees for Daphne…

This was such a beautiful story about changing and changing for the better. Daphne fucked up and missed celebrating Ashleigh’s birthday but she owned up and took accountability. Which was refreshing for a character in a rom-com. They typically try to justify shitty mistakes that they made but she knew she messed up and she apologized. Both Miles and Daphne were able to own up to their issues when they hurt each other and they were both able to understand where the other was coming from. It was also refreshing to have their issues stem from somewhere and not be made up from a bad breakup or something. And they were both aware of their issues and willing to be better and learn.

I’m not sure I had many criticisms of this book. It was well written, the story was flushed out, and the characters learned something and found happiness. It didn’t have that wow factor of some books but it was a very enjoyable romance.

A quote I loved:

“And I feel lucky every time you look at me. Not because I think I’ve managed to earn you, but because it feels like you don’t need me to. Like you just … like me.”
