I've loved everything I've read by Emily Henry, and Funny Story did not disappoint. This book had everything - it was funny, relatable, sad, charming, and everything in between. I spent most of my time reading this book laughing out loud, following by some wiping of my tears. Between Funny Story and Beach Read, I'm starting to feel like I should move to Michigan.

This was the first book I read this year, and it's set the bar high for the rest of 2024. I could not put this book down, and I have a feeling I'll be picking it up again soon for a re-read.

Yet another brilliant story from Emily Henry. With so many romances and new novels falling into traditional tropes (which, while easily marketable, can be a bit tiring), Henry never disappoints with a phenomenal new premise. The character dynamics were incredibly thoughtful, interesting, and engaging, leaving me invested in every moment with these characters.

Hilarious and charming! An unlikely romance that make you root from the heart! Emily Henry does it again with her snappy and relatable dialogue.

Funny Story isn't just a funny story. It's what Emily Henry does best giving what could easily be a light hearted rom com a deeper plot. We watch as the two main characters grow separately before finding their way into the cutest romance. This book gives everything from a light hearted Michigan summer to a woman experiencing personal growth after going through a very unfortunate. event. Miles and Daphne finding each other gave in my opinion the perfect balance of realistic first impressions and dreamy romance. Emily Henry does it again entering common troupes but doing it in a way so entertaining and different. My personal favorites we see played out are the jealousy, fake dating and forced proximity troupes. In saying all this I believe I found my new favorite Emily Henry book and that this is a must read for all romance readers especially in the upcoming spring and summer months.

While not my favorite Emily Henry, she never truly misses. This was just as charming and romantic as her previous works, and I LOVE Miles; he was SO FUNNY. Peter and Petra can burn in hell together; they were horrible and I’m so glad Peter showed his true colors before Daphne could marry him.
I felt like the third act breakup was kind of contrived. Sure, Miles should have just told Daphne about trying to get her dad back, but he actually had nothing to apologize for.

THIS. BOOK.

Emily Henry can write a grocery list and I will read every single item multiple times.

Daphne’s engaged to Peter. Petra’s engaged to Miles. Until one day, Peter dumps Daphne for Petra. *Ouch*
Daphne moves in with Miles… and so it begins.

Oh Daphne and Miles. I love them so much. The banter was top notch. As someone in her 30s, I was able to relate to them a lot. This book made me smile, made my heart so giddy and made me cackle more times than it should’ve. I loved the depth to each character, their insecurities, the baggage. How it makes you see that change is constant and it’s ok to embrace it. It was sexy, funny, messy, and the mix of friendships / ages was so refreshing.

💜 Roommates
💜 Fake dating
💜 Forced proximity
💜 Opposites attract
💜 Friends to lovers

I did not want it to end. I can’t wait to read it again!

Emily Henry never disappoints! I’m so so grateful to Berkley Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC!

Emily Henry, has not once, let me down! Book Lovers has always been a hard one to beat. It's one of my favorites. Buuuuut I think Funny Story actually did it! The tension, the characters, the plot, the back and forth hilarious talk... and of course the romance. Gah I am so glad this was my first read of 2024!

This was a good story, and I enjoyed the main characters, Daphne and Miles. They are both emotionally screwed up in different ways, but they manage to "find" themselves when they get together. The plot was well developed, and there were aspects of Daphne's character that I could identify with. I laughed. I teared up. I sighed. It had all the elements of a good love story. The only gripe I have, and I believe I said this in my review of Happy Place also, is that the author really should write her 30-something-year-old characters acting more like grown ups. If they were in their late teens to early 20's I could probably understand the pot smoking and whatnot, but it's very hard to relate to characters in their mid to late-30's who smoke weed and act like 20-something wannabes. Overall, I would still recommend Funny Story, but unfortunately I won't be anxiously awaiting the author's next book and pouncing on it, like I usually do.

Ugghhhhhh💔💔💔😍😍😍

The character work here is truly some of EH’s best (in terms of growth, healing past hurts, motivations, limitations, flaws).

I LOVE MILES and I connected a lot with his journey. Somebody told me he gives Nick Miller vibes and I agree.

I feel such a personal connection to this one being that it’s set in Northern Michigan (one of my favorite places and where I feel the most at peace). The imagery and setting (lake/town/beach) was so beautiful and comforting to me.

I’m not sure what my EH ranking will be now because I identify with Norah more than Daphne and Charlie Lastra is my book boyfriend for life but damn was this book incredible!

My one critique is Daphne’s relationship with Ashleigh could have been fleshed out more or planned better. Something about them as friends didn’t feel totally natural to me and I felt like the pacing waned during the Daphne/ Ashleigh scenes.

Thank you so much to Berkeley Romance for the ARC and the chance to read this early 🤍

Emily Henry is such a special writer because she has the ability to wrap the reader so much into a story that the story feels real. I can easily get lost in books, that's part of why I love to read so much, but with Emily Henry's books it's different. I don't just see the story happening in my head, I feel it. She sucks me in and even when the story breaks my heart, I'm happy because I get to go along with the characters as they grow and develop not only together but on their own.

Each of Emily Henry's books is so unique and very much it's own story, but I always know that when I get to read something new, or reread something older, I'm going to get that same warm fuzzy feeling that her writing gives me.

If you haven't read one of Emily's books, please do so. They are too good to miss out on!!

This is probably one of my top three Emily Henry books

I am also so grateful that this book did not make me cry

I really liked that. The main tension wasn't just a real romantic attention that there were also tensions between friends.

I went into this pretty much predicting what was going to happen between Daphne and Miles, as they say they are in a fake relationship.
But with Henry's writing I grew to really live these characters.
Daphne as a children's librarian was described so perfectly, how she feels about her job and about books hit me in the feels because I felt the same way. How you pick out books for a certain kid that visits, and having to pinch the library budget.
Miles has great qualities and I loved that he wanted to show Daphne more of the town and make her feel more like she belongs and that she can fit in without her ex-fiance.
The way Henry describes everything is with her signature charm and makes me want to be there with these characters.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

When Daphne’s fiancé dumps her for Miles’ girlfriend, she doesn’t have anywhere to go so it only make sense to move in with Miles for a while. But when they get invited to their exes wedding, they pretend to be dating to make them jealous. Multiple tropes including fake relationship, friends to lovers, and forced proximity all work together to make a Funny Story. Book Lovers is still my fave, but this was a close runner up.

Amazing! Incredible! 10/10! Emily Henry's best book yet - I loved it. The setting was fantastic, I imagine it's set in Leelanau County, Michigan and it felt very true to the world she had created.

What’s a woman to do when her favorite story about how she met her fiancé turns into a tragedy when he dumps her to take up with his “platonic” childhood friend? Well, that’s a funny story.

Daphne, a children’s librarian who is so buttoned up and reticent that her colleagues take bets on whether she’s with the FBI or in a witness protection program, uprooted her life to follow her fiancé Peter to the small Michigan town of Waning Bay (his family home), only to have him dump her, leaving her homeless. In desperation, she asks Peter’s new fiancee’s ex-boyfriend if she can rent a room. Miles, a happy-go-lucky pothead who works a string of part-time jobs, readily agrees and, after both receiving invitations to their ex’s wedding and getting drunk together, agree to fake a relationship. In the ensuing months, Miles takes her on weekly adventures they can document on social media. Although her goal is to leave the painful memories behind once she’s finished with the Readathon she’s planning, Miles hopes she’ll come to appreciate her new home as more than just an extension of Peter.

As expected, they start catching feelings as they spend more time together and realize that they have a lot more in common than they first thought. Daphne finds that Miles isn’t the slacker her ex painted him to be, but actually works at a winery and only does odd jobs in the off-season. He’s also kind, selfless, charming ,and handsome beneath the scruff, a perfect book boyfriend. It’s so refreshing how mature and honest they are with each other, sharing both frequent laughter and heartfelt emotions. As their relationship grows, they both start to look at the trauma caused by their parents and how it has impacted their thoughts about themselves.

Emily Henry writes beautiful, somewhat angsty stories that don’t shy away from hard truths. In this opposites attract, friends-to-lovers romance, she addresses the damage emotionally abusive or neglectful parents do to their children, but still manages to keep it from becoming maudlin. Although this isn’t my favorite book of hers, she has definitely earned her spot as a top author of the romance genre.

Emily Henry is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This story was another great, fast moving, totally relatable book. Being a librarian myself, I was able to laugh out loud at some of the stories they told. It was heartwarming to see how Miles and Daphne relied on each other and helped each other find what they needed. Loved this story!

An Emily Henry book is always. great read and Funny Story was no exception - I loved it! She has a way of constructing believable characters that the reader can really root for.

I feel so many emotions right now. I have no notes. Emily Henry writes works of art and I loved every second of it. She had me giggling and crying and literally jumping because of how excited I was at one point. I've never felt so much emotion from a chapter heading before until I got to chapter 31.

Miles is a sweetheart and just a bundle of joy. I want to protect him from the world. Daphne broke my heart but also I was so moved by her journey and I want nothing but the best for her. As a librarian it was so fun to see her job and her love for her community.

If there is one author I trust completely it's Emily Henry. I would blind read a book by her any day of the week. Her books are always my most anticipated reads and this did not disappoint!!!!

Funny Story is, hands down, my favorite Emily Henry book so far! The plot was insane and I devoured the entire book in two days. This book made me laugh out loud multiple times and by laugh out loud I mean genuinely cackle like a maniac. It has been so long since banter between characters has made me laugh this much. Daphne and Miles were genuinely perfect for each other and their development was *chef's kiss*. My heart is so full. The last line came full circle and almost made me cry.

It’s no secret that Emily Henry has fast become one of my favorite romance authors of contemporary romance. There is just something about her writing that clicks with me. Funny Story is a roommates to lovers, forced proximity romance and is just as delightful as you would think.

Daphne is shocked when she finds out her perfect love story isn’t so perfect–and her fiancé has left her for his best friend Petra. So, she does what any woman with no place to go does, she moves in with Petra’s ex Miles. Alone in small town Michigan, with just her job as a children’s librarian and a calendar to count down the days until she can move away, she tries to make it work in the tiny apartment with the depressed, sad song playing Miles.

Then one day they both receive invitations the newly formed couple’s wedding. So once again, Daphne does what any woman in a weird situation would do–she lies and says that she and Miles are a couple and will be attending together.

I was hooked right from the first word, as Emily Henry starts out having Daphne introduce readers to her predicament by telling her story with Peter. How they meet, how they began to plan a wedding, and then him coming home from his bachelor party to let her know that he’s leaving her for his bff, Petra. There is no complicated wondering about what came before, as a reader you know exactly the heartbreak she’s experienced. Which leads right up to her cohabitation with Miles. And even though he’s depressed over his breakup, he comes across as a nice guy.

I wasn’t too sure about his character at first, but with each page he became this wonderful, loving, charming, adventurous, easy-going guy who I adored. As he and Daphne navigate their newfound friendship, they become close as he is determined to show her all the places she needs to see before she makes the decision to leave Michigan for good. It’s a fabulous getting to know you, slow and thoughtful, but it’s complicated because of their history with their exes. I mean, what’s the playbook for falling in love with your ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex-boyfriend? I loved that they were always honest with each other, both about their faults and feelings. I made their new relationship believable.

The ending was *chef’s kiss* perfect. Yes, there is a third act breakup of sorts, and Miles does something stupid… but that didn’t dim my enjoyment one bit. Daphne comes out of her shell, makes good friends, and discovers want she wants to do with her life. The secondary characters bring such sparkle and humor to the page, and I adored them. The epilogue was absolutely lovely.

Highly recommend.

Final Grade- A
