I went into this pretty much predicting what was going to happen between Daphne and Miles, as they say they are in a fake relationship.
But with Henry's writing I grew to really live these characters.
Daphne as a children's librarian was described so perfectly, how she feels about her job and about books hit me in the feels because I felt the same way. How you pick out books for a certain kid that visits, and having to pinch the library budget.
Miles has great qualities and I loved that he wanted to show Daphne more of the town and make her feel more like she belongs and that she can fit in without her ex-fiance.
The way Henry describes everything is with her signature charm and makes me want to be there with these characters.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

When Daphne’s fiancé dumps her for Miles’ girlfriend, she doesn’t have anywhere to go so it only make sense to move in with Miles for a while. But when they get invited to their exes wedding, they pretend to be dating to make them jealous. Multiple tropes including fake relationship, friends to lovers, and forced proximity all work together to make a Funny Story. Book Lovers is still my fave, but this was a close runner up.

Amazing! Incredible! 10/10! Emily Henry's best book yet - I loved it. The setting was fantastic, I imagine it's set in Leelanau County, Michigan and it felt very true to the world she had created.

What’s a woman to do when her favorite story about how she met her fiancé turns into a tragedy when he dumps her to take up with his “platonic” childhood friend? Well, that’s a funny story.
Daphne, a children’s librarian who is so buttoned up and reticent that her colleagues take bets on whether she’s with the FBI or in a witness protection program, uprooted her life to follow her fiancé Peter to the small Michigan town of Waning Bay (his family home), only to have him dump her, leaving her homeless. In desperation, she asks Peter’s new fiancee’s ex-boyfriend if she can rent a room. Miles, a happy-go-lucky pothead who works a string of part-time jobs, readily agrees and, after both receiving invitations to their ex’s wedding and getting drunk together, agree to fake a relationship. In the ensuing months, Miles takes her on weekly adventures they can document on social media. Although her goal is to leave the painful memories behind once she’s finished with the Readathon she’s planning, Miles hopes she’ll come to appreciate her new home as more than just an extension of Peter.
As expected, they start catching feelings as they spend more time together and realize that they have a lot more in common than they first thought. Daphne finds that Miles isn’t the slacker her ex painted him to be, but actually works at a winery and only does odd jobs in the off-season. He’s also kind, selfless, charming ,and handsome beneath the scruff, a perfect book boyfriend. It’s so refreshing how mature and honest they are with each other, sharing both frequent laughter and heartfelt emotions. As their relationship grows, they both start to look at the trauma caused by their parents and how it has impacted their thoughts about themselves.
Emily Henry writes beautiful, somewhat angsty stories that don’t shy away from hard truths. In this opposites attract, friends-to-lovers romance, she addresses the damage emotionally abusive or neglectful parents do to their children, but still manages to keep it from becoming maudlin. Although this isn’t my favorite book of hers, she has definitely earned her spot as a top author of the romance genre.

Emily Henry is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This story was another great, fast moving, totally relatable book. Being a librarian myself, I was able to laugh out loud at some of the stories they told. It was heartwarming to see how Miles and Daphne relied on each other and helped each other find what they needed. Loved this story!

An Emily Henry book is always. great read and Funny Story was no exception - I loved it! She has a way of constructing believable characters that the reader can really root for.

I feel so many emotions right now. I have no notes. Emily Henry writes works of art and I loved every second of it. She had me giggling and crying and literally jumping because of how excited I was at one point. I've never felt so much emotion from a chapter heading before until I got to chapter 31.
Miles is a sweetheart and just a bundle of joy. I want to protect him from the world. Daphne broke my heart but also I was so moved by her journey and I want nothing but the best for her. As a librarian it was so fun to see her job and her love for her community.
If there is one author I trust completely it's Emily Henry. I would blind read a book by her any day of the week. Her books are always my most anticipated reads and this did not disappoint!!!!

Funny Story is, hands down, my favorite Emily Henry book so far! The plot was insane and I devoured the entire book in two days. This book made me laugh out loud multiple times and by laugh out loud I mean genuinely cackle like a maniac. It has been so long since banter between characters has made me laugh this much. Daphne and Miles were genuinely perfect for each other and their development was *chef's kiss*. My heart is so full. The last line came full circle and almost made me cry.

It’s no secret that Emily Henry has fast become one of my favorite romance authors of contemporary romance. There is just something about her writing that clicks with me. Funny Story is a roommates to lovers, forced proximity romance and is just as delightful as you would think.
Daphne is shocked when she finds out her perfect love story isn’t so perfect–and her fiancé has left her for his best friend Petra. So, she does what any woman with no place to go does, she moves in with Petra’s ex Miles. Alone in small town Michigan, with just her job as a children’s librarian and a calendar to count down the days until she can move away, she tries to make it work in the tiny apartment with the depressed, sad song playing Miles.
Then one day they both receive invitations the newly formed couple’s wedding. So once again, Daphne does what any woman in a weird situation would do–she lies and says that she and Miles are a couple and will be attending together.
I was hooked right from the first word, as Emily Henry starts out having Daphne introduce readers to her predicament by telling her story with Peter. How they meet, how they began to plan a wedding, and then him coming home from his bachelor party to let her know that he’s leaving her for his bff, Petra. There is no complicated wondering about what came before, as a reader you know exactly the heartbreak she’s experienced. Which leads right up to her cohabitation with Miles. And even though he’s depressed over his breakup, he comes across as a nice guy.
I wasn’t too sure about his character at first, but with each page he became this wonderful, loving, charming, adventurous, easy-going guy who I adored. As he and Daphne navigate their newfound friendship, they become close as he is determined to show her all the places she needs to see before she makes the decision to leave Michigan for good. It’s a fabulous getting to know you, slow and thoughtful, but it’s complicated because of their history with their exes. I mean, what’s the playbook for falling in love with your ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex-boyfriend? I loved that they were always honest with each other, both about their faults and feelings. I made their new relationship believable.
The ending was *chef’s kiss* perfect. Yes, there is a third act breakup of sorts, and Miles does something stupid… but that didn’t dim my enjoyment one bit. Daphne comes out of her shell, makes good friends, and discovers want she wants to do with her life. The secondary characters bring such sparkle and humor to the page, and I adored them. The epilogue was absolutely lovely.
Highly recommend.
Final Grade- A

This book was so much fun. I absolutely loved the characters and the interesting situation that brought them together. I love that they weren’t traditional romance book leads, and I found myself grinning and kicking my feet the whole time. I would absolutely reread and recommend!

Emily Henry is the gift that keeps on giving. Once again, with Funny Story, readers get a fresh and relatable take on the fake dating trope. As with all of her novels, Henry’s writing is immersive and deep, and you can always count on impeccable dialogue. The characters are flawed and raw and lovable. I read Funny Story in one sitting but I’m planning on going back to this one and taking my time. I have yet to read a Henry book I would not recommend, and I especially love this one.

EMILY HENRY NEVER FAILS!!! I don’t know how every year she’s able to write the most perfect book ever written, and yet, every year she does it. Funny Story was pure RomCom perfection but with the depth and communication that Emily Henry brings to all of her characters that make you feel as if these people are not only real, but that they actually can understand what you’re going through as well. This is a perfectly balance book: there is swoon, there is steam, there were tears, and there is laughter. I never wanted it to end. I now love Daphne & Miles with all my heart and soul.

I am a huge Emily Henry fan and this book had everything about her books that I love. Miles and Daphne were both great characters and I loved their chemistry. I bought them as friends right away and loved how their relationship progressed. None of the side characters or storylines felt out of place and I loved the setting.

Another total win for Emily Henry - Funny Story was the perfect romance, that made me feel so much. Within the first 10% of this book, I felt everything for Daphne and Miles, the pain of heartbreak to love simmering through friendship. This book was is an example of what Emily Henry does best.
If you love Beach Read, you will adore this one!
Thank you to Berkley Romance for the earc!

Daphne and Miles have just been dumped by their respective partners - to be with each other. Hurt and alone, Daphne moves in with Miles. The two share a tenuous bond until Daphne lies to her ex, claiming to be dating Miles in order to save face. Hijinks ensue!
Except not. This is Emily Henry and she is so great at taking a romance trope and rooting it in reality - leaving the hijinks behind and crafting an emotional, fun, swoony love story.

Everytime Emily Henry publishes a book I say to myself.... "This is my favorite one yet!" and then the next one comes out. So guess what? This may be my favorite one yet! Now I am a sucker for fake dating but what sucked me in immediately was Daphne being a librarian. I can't tell you, as a librarian, how many of my saved highlights are just her quotes about working in a public library. I loved Miles but I especially loved how the towns people loved Miles and how he loves them back. There was a big sense of community in this and I loved it so much.

Another Emily Henry added to the favorites shelf. This one is special to me, some for reasons that I should probably keep between me and a therapist. What I love about EH's books is, somewhere along the way, you find at least one way to be truly seen, to be understood, to find a connection point between this fictional world and your real one. And then, because of that, the fictional world ends up feeling real, too.

Emily Henry continues to be one of my must read authors with 'Funny Story'. It's such a touching story about second chance and finding your worth. I couldn't put it down.

Emily Henry does it again! I've only ever read Book Lovers but Funny Story was the perfect follow up to the masterpiece. The tension and emotional growth I experienced while reading this was astronomical. I loved every single character even some of the bad ones lmao the focus on found family was everything.

This was beyond a 5 star read for me, while I loved all of Emily's work, Funny Story really blew it out of the park. This has everything I look for in a contemporary romance while binding it with a conversation around life, family relationships, and love. We follow Daphne, Children's librarian and recent ex-fiancée and Miles, recent ex-boyfriend. Daphne and Miles' partners both leave them for each other's former partner and they end up living together.
Something about reading this book 1. Transported me so deeply into the story 2. Made me feel so at home. Reading this book was so effortless: the dialogue was intelligent, real, and honest. The connection between Miles and Daphne was pure and magnetic. The lessons Daphne grapples with regarding her life and family hit so close to home for me, and I foresee many other readers in all walks of life.
What I also appreciated about this book was the setting in Michigan. I felt perfectly transported during every moment and I adored exploring new parts of Michigan with Daphne and Miles.
I laughed, I cried, my heart felt like it was going to burst from my chest.
While maybe “lighter” than some of Emily's other work, this book still explored so many deeper themes and left me feeling ripped right open but also like I just got a warm hug. The banter? The tension? The depth? Emily always brings with perfection and this is no exception.
Both Miles and Daphne feel like a piece of me and I don’t think I will ever forget this book. I already look forward to rereading this when it releases in April.
