This is Emily Henry at her absolute best. Lovely, lovely characters and plot. I read this so quickly and didn't want it to end. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I wish I could read it again for the first time. Thanks to NetGalley for an early copy.

Emily Henry has done it again! She doesn't miss and I am just thankful to be living in a world where she is writing books.

This book follows the aftermath of a broken engagement where our main character takes up residence with the ex-boyfriend of the girl her fiance left her for (drama, I know). However, despite these absurd circumstances in which our main characters build their relationship, this love story felt so organic and believable from the get-go. Both our main characters have their issues regarding relationships that we see them tackle in this book, and I don't think anyone will have trouble rooting for their personal growth as well as their growth together.

It's no secret that Emily Henry KNOWS how to write a male lead - but this one felt a bit different from her previous ones. He was not the shy introverted writer that we all know and love from her some of her previous works. Instead, he was charming and charismatic and felt so tangible (in the best way possible). I think part of the reason I enjoyed this book as much as I did was because it felt like a love story that could have happened to me.

All in all, this book gives us a swoon-worthy romance with the banter we know and love, but it also tackles familial relationship issues that personally hit close to home. Emily Henry knows how to weave both of these plot lines so seamlessly together and I'm just so thankful for the opportunity to have read this early!

I really enjoyed this - the main character is a librarian, and finds herself rooming with her ex-fiance's ex fiancé. Daphne and Miles concoct a fake dating scenario to try to get back at their ex's, and of course, fall in love. Emily Henry is the queen of banter, and Funny Story does not disappoint. I love how Henry incorporates her own love or reading, librarians, and books in this novel. I still think my favorite Emily Henry book is "Book Lovers" by this one is a close second! Thank you to NetGalley for the Advanced reader copy.

Daphne has moved her entire life for fiancée Peter and the wedding is imminent until he dumps her for his life long platonic friend Petra. With no where to go Daphne moves in with Petra’s ex Miles. You know from the plot line she and Miles will fall for each other but when we first meet him he’s a sad mess pothead, and I almost stopped reading then. But the real Miles grows on the reader as he does on Daphne. The two together discover truths about themselves, as they become better people with each other.

I don't read much romance, but Emily Henry is my favorite. She plays with tropes that we all know from rom-coms, but then goes so much deeper. We see the characters and their quirks and flaws. Plus she sprinkles in amazing, nerdy references that had me smiling from page to page. She is almost always an auto-buy for me, and this is not an exception!

4.5 stars

I just love spending a day or two in Emily Henry’s worlds. Daphne moved to a small Michigan town with her fiancé Peter who ends up dumping Daphne so he could be with his childhood bff Petra. Daphne ends up moving in with Miles, Petra’s dumped ex.

Wonderful book as Daphne and Miles work through their hurt and learn a lot about themselves. I loved both of them! You will smile throughout the book.

This is without a doubt my favorite Emily Henry book yet! I was a bit disappointed in her previous novel, so I didn't go into this with high expectations, and boy, was I in for a treat! The story between Daphne and Miles was just so sweet and I was rooting for them the entire book!

This book was SO good! I love all Emily Henry books, but this one tugs on my heart slightly differently. I devoured this book in a couple of days and felt so connected to both Daphne and Miles. Daphne was the most relatable character. I could relate to her love of books and being part of the library community. I also could understand her trust issues and how skeptical she was about letting people entirely into her life. Daphne and Miles's romantic relationship felt real, and they dealt with real-life experiences and challenges. I loved that their relationship felt organically from the start, especially when they were unexpectedly roommates and, more shockingly, their exes’ exes. Henry’s writing was phenomenical and this book should be on everyone’s rom con to read list this year!

Thank you to Netgallery and to Berkley Publishing for giving me a copy of the book

Funny Story feels like a breath of fresh air. However, it feels mature and lighter yet witty and sensitive in many aspects. The banter and chemistry between the two main characters is fantastic. The struggles Miles and Daphne face feel real to the point I could easily relate to both of them. Daphne's struggles and the mother-daughter relationship were great as well.

In Funny Story, Emily Henry continues her streak of relatable main characters in feel good stories. In the midst of a messy break-up with her fiance, Daphne moves in Miles. Miles is the former boyfriend of her ex-fiance's new girlfriend. This is a well-written love story with Emily Henry's signature banter. 4/5 stars

I actually don’t know how it’s even possible for a book to be comparable to Happy Place, but unfathomably, Emily Henry has done it again, and even better. This book is more real, more raw, more close, and more relatable than ever, in addition to being funny and cute.

I absolutely love the characters, who don’t so much have fatal flaws, but human flaws. These characters are so loveable and believable, and all tension or problems are realistic. Many parts of this book had me looking at myself and going “oh wait, I do that.” So I what I’m actually saying is it was like therapy.

The “ex’s new love’s ex” trope was so so fun, and even though I initially wasn’t looking forward to it because I thought it would be cringe, I clearly forgot that Emily Henry does everything well, and this isn’t an exception. Please please read this book because it is just so fantastic and you will cry so hard (if you feel everything like me and Daphne)
Miles is the best book boyfriend, hands down! Sorry to all other Emily Henry book boyfriends I’ve let down to say this.
I honestly don’t know how I know what’s going to happen every time, but it still manages to gut punch me.

Thank you to Net Galley for the advanced reader copy! :)

I don’t read much romance, but Emily Henry always proves the exception. In Funny Story, Daphne, a straitlaced children’s librarian, moves to small-town Michigan for her fiancé Peter — only for him to dump her months before the wedding for his lifelong best friend Petra. Isolated and reeling, Daphne temporarily takes Petra’s newly-vacated room in her now-ex Miles’ apartment. What follows is a New Girl-esque story featuring (in my opinion) one of Emily Henry’s most likeable love interests and a healthy dose of some light family trauma that bonds the very different Daphne and Miles along the way.

As a librarian, I especially loved Daphne’s dedication to her job. Seeing her at work made her a more full realized character and provided a lovely glimpse into how libraries can foster community among longtime and new residents. I also loved the witty dialogue, which is vital to any Emily Henry novel. Any of her fans will clamber to read her latest, and I’m sure they’ll like it.

4.5/5: The roommates-to-lovers trope with a lot of heart at the center and a delightful Michigan summer setting.

It seems like every other one of Emily Henry's books is great - and this is one of them! I liked how each of them grows a bit but also how each of them learns to accommodate the other. This couple feels real.

I own all of Emily Henry's books. Somehow, this one - not even out yet - is the one I've read first. Funny Story tells the story of Miles and Daphne. Daphne's fiance ended up running off with his childhood best friend, Petra, who also happened to be Miles' girlfriend. Daphne and Miles end up in a roommate situation and from there, we're taken on a truly wonderful, enjoyable, entertaining romp. I devoured this book and I completely understand the thrall Emily Henry has everyone in. I was immediately sucked into this story and invested in the characters. The banter was top shelf. This is easily one of my favorite reads of the year.

It’s exactly what you want. It’s Emily Henry at her best. Witty, snort-with-laughter funny, not shy of a little conflict or heartache, with tangible, emotionally real characters that you want to root for.

I will say Miles was the best kind of surprise. I started out the book thinking SURELY she is going to move, who TF is this dude? And then he proceeded to grow on me the fastest I’ve ever warmed to a character in my life. It’s so rare that pure charisma can just drip off the page the way it does from some real people but Miles as Emily Henry has written him is pure sunlight and *presence*! You can see why the main character ends up falling so hard. Even his (baby spoilers here) being a product of a narcissist makes sense. I feel like Emily Henry may know someone who is, because I do, and they are JUST like this. Smiley, emotional chameleons, genuinely interested in people, who can sometimes shut down in negative emotional situations in an avoidant way. Brilliant.

If I’m honest, I could have done with 100 more pages - of them really suffering from the emotional damage, and recovering together, but that’s not what Emily Henry is going for here. It deals with that a bit, and then keeps it light and moving into the steamy romance we came for. Full on sex descriptions! So…recommended for almost everyone but kids and Aces. Not much for you here Aces! But that makes it delicious for the rest of us! Hot damn this woman can write! ENJOY!

I loved this charming romance with a fake dating trope and Emily Henry's signature witty banter. The characters were easy to fall in love with and root for. It really explores the impact that your childhood can have on your ability to give and receive love as an adult.

On a separate note, librarians will be happy to hear that the career-related storylines were well-researched. The library in this book is busy, and the people who work there are shown to have advanced degrees, answer reference questions, run programs, organize fundraisers, and make community-based collection development decisions.

Absolutely adored Emily Henry’s newest book, Funny Story. I have only read Book Lovers so far, but now I’m eager to read her other titles. Funny Story is a breezy, steamy, romance between two unlikely roommates. It reads like a dream and has so many passages that will stick with me. I can’t wait to get a physical copy so I can annotate it and share it with friends.

I give this book 4.5 stars, rounded up to steamy forced proximity, friends to lovers, opposites attraction. In no way can I give any Emily Henry book less than five stars.

This book isn't my favorite among Emily Henry's works. "Happy Place" holds that position, while "People We Meet on Vacation" is my least favorite of hers. (By the way, both earned five stars from me, so I have to work on a different grading system for Henry’s books like triple five stars, minus five stars, etc. But I'm sure each of her books will become my favorite romance readings of the year, even though Colleen Hoover releases a book at the same time. Yep, ColHo fans, I’m one of yours, but fair is fair! Emily Henry is a true musician and poet playing the strings of my heart.)

But let's be honest: Miles Nowak is the BEST BOYFRIEND Emily Henry has created! He’s caring, a charm magnet, selfless, easy-going, adventurous – not only the best boyfriend but also the best male friend any woman seeks. His irresistible hotness is the cherry on top. I'm usually irritated by the heroes Emily Henry creates, but so far, Miles has exceeded them with his good heart, sense of humor, naturalness, without having a selfish bone in his body!

I have to admit I had doubts when I first decided to read this book because I've never been a fan of love triangles or ex-lover situations. When they are involved, things get messier, and emotions get blurrier. Most characters do something irritating, missing the ex or trying to rekindle, which pisses me off.

I won't give spoilers, but I can say this: the situation of becoming roommates with your ex-fiancée’s new fiancée’s ex-boyfriend couldn’t be handled very gently and fairly. Both Daphne and Miles are wise, analyzing their situations very reasonably. When they accidentally find themselves in a fake dating situation, they even share their thoughts honestly. That’s why I loved both of the characters. They know their own flaws, weaknesses, and they don’t whine or obsess over their exes. They hold each other to get through the trauma, and from their mutual tragic incident, a beautiful, unique friendship is born. I loved how they slowly lowered down their barriers, learning to explore themselves and the huge life awaiting them. They acted so mature and were so careful not to be each other’s rebound, even though the sparks fly and burn the apartment they share to the ground.

The plot revolves around Daphne, who loves the story of how she met her fiancée Peter until he dumps her after the bachelor party to choose his childhood friend Petra over her, giving her one week to move from their shared house, heading to the Amalfi Coast with his new girlfriend! Yes, what a jerk! Homeless and hopeless, Daphne, who recently left her old life behind to start a new life with Peter, finds Miles: Petra’s dumped a few minutes ago boyfriend at Peter’s door, and she pops up the question: is there any vacant room at your apartment?

Yes, the equation might be too complicated. Daphne: reserved, tight-lipped, buttoned-up children’s librarian living with a carefree, adventurous, pothead guy who is working odd jobs, as her ex-fiancée defined. But when they get an invitation to Petra & Peter’s wedding, their very reserved roommate relationship changes after a night ends at the bar, and both of them decide to RSVP to the wedding. And guess what? The same day Peter makes a pity call that leads Daphne to lie about her relationship situation with Miles. She says they are dating, and thankfully Miles plays along with her game.

But what if she misjudged Miles from the beginning? This self-deprecating, friendly guy who always puts others before him, comes to the library to cheer him up when she reads books to the kids, takes him places in town she has never seen, helps her open her mind and heart, rediscovering herself. Is he the guy her heart wants?

Well, I loved Miles, I loved Daphne & Miles' love story, and the beautiful epilogue in the end! No more words! Emily Henry never disappoints me! She meticulously solved this challenging relationship equation with the best possible outcome! Go on! Read, reread, and reread this lovely book!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this amazing book’s digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Librarian x Bartender romance?
Roommate romance??
Opposites attract???
Getting revenge on your ex????
Fake dating?????

I'm not sure there could've been a better set up for me when it comes to this book tbh. Throw in the fact that the love interest is just so deliciously Nick Miller coded? I was so sold from the beginning and the book really delivered for me.

This book delved into a lot of deep things between Daphne, the main character, and the people in her life — not just the love interest, but her parents, her friends, and her ex — in a way that felt well developed throughout the plot. I don't want to give too much away, but this really does feel like a read for The Archer girlies among us.

This romance also felt like it was one of the best I've read in a while in terms of how much and how deeply the couple interacted before the "I love yous." Some romances leave me wondering how feelings get developed when so little time is dedicated to them getting to know each other in a meaningful way on or off page. But I felt that Emily really delivered on giving Daphne and Miles a thorough love arc.
