This book is a medium-paced thriller with a multi-character POV that can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning of the story. I could see it was way deeper than just a missing person case. Every time I thought I figured something out a twist happened, and I didn’t.
There’re so many twists and turns and so many well-kept secrets among the village people. It is one of those books where you wonder if the way people portrait themselves in public is who they are behind closed doors. If the perfection they show is there.
Overall, this was a great story after it’s slow beginning, the character development was right on top, and the story kept me engaged until the end. The village has so many intrigues and creepy people waiting and hiding in the shadows. I recommend it to those who enjoys a book that will keep you guessing every single thing until the very end.
Thank you, Bookouture & NetGalley, for approving me to read this arc and write this review.
Another great thriller from Lauren North.
In this book things really are not as they seem, a sinister funeral director, watching and waiting in the shadows. A nosy neighbour watching from behind the curtains.
So many twists, it would be hard to say too much for fear of spoilers.
If you want a book to keep you guessing, this is it!
Thank you to Bookouture, Netgalley and Lauren North for an ARC in return for an honest review.
A new teacher joins the village of Leedham, but with a secret. What secret? You'll have to read "The Teacher's Secret." A wife and a son go missing, but who is to blame? Is it the husband/father, a teacher in Leedham, or a stranger? "The Teacher's Secret" was a slow read. The first half of the book brings in the new teacher and her mysterious past, the husband/father of the missing woman and child, and the issues that arise because of their whereabouts. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because toward the end of the book, it became gut wrenching. However, The point of views were definitely a turn off to me, I feel like there were some POVs that were irrelevant to the plot, but others were necessary-I just didn't like the jumping to 1st person then to 2nd person. Honestly, the title gave me the hopes of a different plot, but then it turned out to be completely different. I was expecting something more since it was given the blurb of a psychological thriller. However, that was not the case for this novel.
This book really kept my interest. The chapters were engaging and quick to read. The character development is strong, and the story moves at a quick pace and keeps the reader guessing. I really enjoyed it, and I will read this author from this point forward!
Thank you, NetGalley, for allowing me to read this book.
The Teacher’s Secret by Lauren North is a fast-paced, multi-character POV thriller. When a popular teacher disappears with her young son, the whole town wonders what happened to them. Was it the husband? Enter Lexi, a substitute with a past who begins to receive threats when she starts looking into the disappearances.
At times, I struggled to remember who was who, but it didn’t take away from the story. There were a lot of twists and turns and kept me guessing until the very end.
I was fortunate to receive a space on the blog tour from Bookouture for this book.
I love Lauren's books and this one felt like a return to her usual style for me after The Ugly Truth. This book also reminded me of the Class of 3B by Jackie Kabler.
A mother and child go missing walking home from school and there are numerous suspects and people with secrets. This felt like a locked room mystery except the room was a village!
In the last third the explanations and twists came one after another and I could never have guessed the ending.
My favourite quote:
"Their views are just the tip of a dark and barbed iceberg."
This was my first Lauren North novel and I was not disappointed. I love books with twists and turns and most people in town have a secret. I also liked that even though here was multiple points of view, it didn't get confusing. It instead was nice getting to know more than one character at a time. I am someone who loves to figure out, "who did it" and this one kept me guess and never saw the ending coming! I cant wait to read another Lauren North Novel!!!
This book is set in England in a community called Leedham. Cate and Archie are the teacher and child that are missing as described in the book's synopsis. Oliver is the head teacher, the husband of Cate, and the father of Archie. Lexi is a substitute called in to cover Cate's class after she is reported missing and is met with an interesting community; nosy parents, nosy neighbors in the community, and a thick veil of mystery. Will Cate and Archie be found? Did Oliver have anything to do with his family going missing?
I did really enjoy this book once I was finally able to get into it. The first 6 chapters or so are a very slow burn, and as an avid reader who can read an entire novel in a few hours, this one took me about a week to muddle through those first chapters to get hooked. This book is filled with smoke and mirrors; when you think you have something figured out, a twist happens that changes your thoughts, all the way until the end. Overall, it's a good story but I did have to take one star off for how slow the beginning was as it didn't pique my interest within the first two chapters. When I read a book, I base my reviews on several factors: overall writing, character development, believability of the events, and whether or not I would recommend this book to others.
How people portray themselves in public isn’t always how they are behind closed doors. Is Cate and Oliver the perfect couple like everyone thinks they are? Then Cate and her son, Archie, go missing after school one day. A substitute teacher comes to help with Cate’s class while everyone is left to wonder where they are. It seems like Lexi, the substitute teacher, has her own secrets to why she chose to come help with this certain school. Does Oliver have secrets too?
At the beginning this book was hard to follow because of all the different characters and their points of view. You can tell this wasn’t a simple missing person case. This book left me with more questions. It wasn’t the worse book I have read, but it wasn’t one of my favorites for this year.
This was a very interesting book! The storyline was intriguing, and kept me wanting to read and find out how it all played out. The ending was really good, and overall I enjoyed the story.
Fast paced who done it. My mouth fell open with all the twists and turns. I thought I had it figured out and then something else would happen and I was of course wrong.
This was absolutely perfect. It's so well written that it draws you in fro the start and has you invested before you even realise. I liked the characters and the twists and turns hasld my head absolutely spinning! Every character has a secret, nothing is what you think, and you'll love every second of it. Just amszing
Wow what a head spinner this one was. So many twists and turns it leaves you feeling dizzy
Absolutely everybody in this book is hiding something, you won’t trust anyone!
Threatening notes, affairs, unsettling photos, secrets and lies. This book has it all and it comes together perfectly. This is my first Lauren North book but after this one I doubt it’ll be my last!
This book cover caught my eye and after reading the synopsis I knew I had to read this one. The writing was great and I never knew who I believed along the way. This book kept me guessing until the very last page. If you are looking for a quick but twisty tale check out this book, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks NetGalley!!
Omg!!! I absolutely not put this book down from the first chapter.. . Usually it takes me a little bit to get into this book but this wasn't awesome book great characters.. You were not regret getting this book The writer did an amazing job..
Lexi moves to Leedham Vale to be a substitute teacher when Cate (the form teacher) and her son, Archie disappear. Cate is married to Oliver, the headmaster, but what secrets is he hiding?
As Lexi settles in to her job, she notices things about the villagers. People seem to be keeping secrets, and Lexi can tell this, as she’s keeping secrets of her own.
Has Oliver killed his wife and son? If not, who has taken them?
There were quite a lot of characters in this story and I did find myself getting a little confused on who was who. The story was a slow burner but I didn’t mind that so much as everything came together at the end.
This is a story with so many secrets and lies, it’s hard to work out just what the truth is.
The characters were well written and in all honesty, not many of them were nice at all!
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book was amazing. It was full of twists and I didn’t see them coming. This was my favorite read so far this year. Thanks to netgalley for giving me this as an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite by the author. So many twists and turns. it was hard to know who to believe. The story completely turned into something I wasn't expecting, and ended up being a little underwhelming. How does one village have so many unlikeable people? They all seemed to work at Leedham Primary School. Gemma was the epitome of the spoiled, little rich girl. She was so jealous of everyone. Cate and Oliver deserved each other. Both had issues with the truth. Archie was the true victim with such manipulative parents. I had a suspicion as to what James was really up to from the start and figured that was what Cate was planning. I even felt sorry for Cate, at first. Cate and Oliver definitely underestimated Lexi. Hopefully, she makes Cate's life miserable. From the start I couldn't wait to find out why Donna hated her sister and what happened to Lexi at her previous job. There are so many questions. What happened to the baby? Weren't the parents mad about the age difference? They had to realize this at the accident. There was all this buildup surrounding Cate and Archie being missing and probably murdered. There wasn't a huge reveal. It was a bit disappointing. I never guessed the identity of the letter writer. I really thought it was someone else.
Definitely recommend the book. It kept me guessing until the end, because I had no idea who was telling the truth. Look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I had no idea what was going to happen while reading this book. It didn’t give me chills or anything and it wasn’t jaw dropping per say but I enjoyed reading it to find out how everyone was connected.
Read if you like-
- multiple POVs
-teacher work environment
-character connections
-plot twists
-small town drama
Cate walker and her son Archie go missing. Everyone thinks it’s the husband. Lexi who has been brought it as the substitute teacher decides to uncover the truth. What happened to Cate and her son? No one can be trusted. Everyone has secrets. I really enjoyed this book. There were so many twists and turns. I didn’t know what to expect everytime I turned the page. The ending was crazy! I honestly wasn’t sure how it would end.
I would definitely recommend this book! I can’t wait to read more books by Lauren.
