This one was a little slow to get going but the intrigue is strong enough to pull you to continue to the unforeseen twists. The short chapters make The Child at My Door an easy, quick read. I liked it.
Thank You to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Sam Vickery for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Clarissa’s had a hard life, both her children and husband are dead, they died 15 years ago and now a little boy has knocked on Clarissa’s door claiming to be her grandson. He said his mummy’s name is Chole and that she needs help. Clarissa is in shock, how can this be possible? Her daughter is called Chloe, but she is no longer alive.
Clarissa takes the little boy in and decides to look after him, however it’s not long before her neighbours start poking their noses in claiming they are concerned for the boy. Soon Chole rocks up and explains everything to her mother. Chloe was in trouble, she needed someone to keep her little boy safe and her mother was the only person she felt was safe to look after her child.
The longer Chloe sticks around the more truths come out and more secrets are uncovered. The child at my door will take you on a rollercoaster of a ride with twists and turns around every corner. I had no idea how the ending of this book would play out or what was coming, it was packed full of suspense and surprises.
Having read a number of Sam Vikery’s books I knew I was in for a treat when I started reading the child at more door. This book does tackle some issues that some readers may find difficult including child abuse and domestic violence.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
This book was an absolutely awesome read. I think the best description would be nothing is as it seems. Everything you think you know about the characters will be turned on its head time and time again. I felt a real sense of urgency when I was reading this, anyone who tried to interrupt me did so at their own peril and I was up into the wee hours because I had to finish it that night. This was a new author to me and I was thrilled to see that she has written quite a few books. Now I just have to remember not to open one if I have an early start the next day.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book
I really enjoyed reading this psychological thriller there are plenty of twists and turns and with a nice a surprising ending. This is a page turner that I couldn’t put down.. the characters were good, the story itself was great and suspenseful and the style of writing was perfect. This is the first book that I have read by this author.. can’t wait for the next one to come out.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading this genre.

This book is a good intro domestic thriller! Please check any trigger warnings before picking it up. The prologue started off with a bang, and then for me it was a slower burn until the second half of the book. That being said, the ending was wild! Definitely didn’t see that coming. Would recommend for readers who do not mind some longer chapters and character building in between the “action”.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the book #TheChildAtMyDoor by #SamVickery. This book was filled with lies, secrets and abuse. I could not believe the incredible plot twist ending. Highly recommend.
Sam Vickery was completely new to me until I received this ARC through NetGalley. This book is so good that I have added her to my auto-read list without hesitation.
Clarissa is greeted by a young boy standing at her door, sent to her in a taxi. He says his name is Tommy, his mummy is Chloe, and she is his grandma. It had been fifteen years since Clarissa last saw her daughter. Believing she was dead, Chloe must find a secure place for Tommy while she gets her life in order, and there's no safer option than her mother's.
This book was incredibly captivating, alternating between two perspectives with surprises in every chapter. Furthermore, the characters are so intricately crafted that you will experience a whirlwind of emotions. Packed with hidden truths and falsehoods, this book will leave you musing long after you've put it down. Brace yourself for a gripping and disturbing domestic thriller filled with shocking revelations that will keep you hooked until the end! I really think you should give it a try!
Many thanks to Bookouture, NetGalley & Sam Vickery for a chance to review it.
Clarissa who unexpectedly has her grandson who she knew nothing about turnup she is amazed by this because she has no grandchildren all the reader knows is it’s been years since her children have been gone. We learned that her daughter Chloe is an abusive relationship with Scott but as she’s trying to get her self together and leave him for good she sends Tommy to stay with her mom who is Clarissa. We also learned Chloe had a brother who is she blames herself for his death which is all wrapped up and why she hasn’t seen her mother in 12 years. Clarissa cannot stand her neighbor Jeff he is presumptive and once Little Tommy starts staying over he just barges in her house demanding to see him and wanting her to let him and his wife Miriam take care of little Tommy until Clo wants him back. Of course someone always gets threatening letters and in this book it’s Clo. The letter say they know what happened with her brother and when she tells this to her mom Clarissa who she’s only known as a loving caring mother. Clarissa tells her she thinks it may be Jeff from across the street. When leaving after visiting her son Tommy she finally runs into Jeff on the sidewalk who emplores her to let him and his wife take care of little Tommy something she find strange The other thing Chloe finds strange is her mom seems to be trying to take more and more control over what little Tommy does and where he goes she even starts making excuses as to why she cannot see him. So when she shows up and they’re not there she uses the hidden house key to get in and finds things she finds very interesting and it causes her to want to know more. But once she starts investigating what happen with her brother and her self she will learn more than once someone is lying to her. Unfortunately everyon May not live to find out the truth. While reading the book in the middle of it I really almost got tired of it especially clothes and her second-guessing everything she does and only wanting to do the thing she should do to take control of the situation. I felt disappointed while reading the book but once it got to the second half and especially the twist in the big reveals I was blown away! Althoughe this book ranks high and eye rolling moments I would still very much recommend this book it is definitely entertaining and will pass an afternoon. I have read this authors books before and have enjoyed them so I am still very much a fan I just don’t think this will get a second read. I want to thank Bookoucher and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Sam Vickery writes the most heart stopping domestic family-centered thrillers! The Child at My Door is no exception with a fascinating plot, smooth writing and lots of twists and turns to figure out.. Emotional and visceral, this one will keep you up late!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
This was a dark, twisty read that I absolutely never could have guessed the ending. Starting right off in the first chapter, the mystery seemed neverending as there were so many questions needing answers that I lost count. I was gripped by this story full of drama, deceit, and darkness. However, I did start losing my concentration in the last quarter of the book. It started becoming a bit too much and a little too out there. I can normally suspend belief for a good read, but there is a limit to that. The end also left me wanting a bit of an explanation as to why exactly the antagonist was the way they were. Overall, this was an enjoyable, okay read for me. Three stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
First, I want to thank Sam Vickery, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
YES!! YES!! YES!! Oh how I love Sam Vicerky’s books! She usually pulls hard on my heart strings but with The Child At My Door she went a little bit to the darker side. I totally loved both aspects of that story.
Instantly Sam hooked me with her intense and suspenseful prologue which made me wanting more!
Tommy pulled my heart string hard in Sam’s storyline. Scott on the other hand was my most hated character in the book! His words, actions and thoughts on a specific matter appalled me!!
There was a lot of family drama, secrets, twists and turns in The Child At My Door.
Clarissa is astonished when a taxi drops off a small boy at her house. He says she is his Grandma- but Clarissa's daughter Chloe disappeared fifteen years ago. She was convinced her daughter must be dead- she was only fifteen when she ran away after killing her brother. Clarissa takes in the child who says his name is Tommy & waits to hear from her long lost daughter.
Chloe hasn't had it easy. After living in squats she met someone & they moved in together. All was fine until she had a baby. Scott had never wanted children & he began to be abusive. Worried for Tommy, Chloe sent him to the only place she could think of.
Told from various points of view, the author gradually builds the story so the reader forms definite ideas of who the villains of the piece only to have them reappraise the situation. It was a terrific read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
What an excellent book - so many twists and turns that I did not see coming.
So well written and kept me on the edge of my seat.
Cant wait to read more. Highly recommended.
The Child at My Door had me on the edge of my seat from the description alone. It was a slow burner to begin with but once the twists and turns began I just did not know what to think. Fantastic book and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
I enjoyed this book and it's twists. I found it to be dark but compelling. Would recommend if you're looking for a twisted domestic thriller!
Well….this is a slow-building story that does show quite a lot of action at the end. Chloe makes a very difficult decision to send her young son to her mother for his safety. Chloe left her mother’s house as a teenager and has never been back. When Chloe arrives at her mother’s house, soooo many lies begin to untangle and things are not as they seemed.
What do you do when you open the door and a little boy say Hi Grandma?! There’s no way this could be your grandson. Your daughter died years before this child was born.
This book is full of secrets and twists. I wasn’t expecting a domestic abuse type book. Definitely not a fan
The Child at My Door by Sam Vickery is a highly recommended domestic thriller that exposes a family's secrets.
When a taxi drops off a four-year-old boy at her door, Clarissa knows is shocked. When the taxi driver and the boy both identify her as the grandma, she knows it's a mistake but has the boy, named Tommy, come in for them to sort it out and find his mother. When she asks, Tommy tells her his mom said to call her Grandma and he says his mom is called Chloe. Clarissa's daughter Chloe left home fifteen years ago and she has told everyone that Chloe died. If Chloe is alive, where has she been for the last fifteen years?
There is no doubt that once you start reading The Child at My Door it soon becomes un-put-downable. Once this well-written thriller starts it builds slowly but steadily until you can't turn the pages quickly enough. You will find yourself glued to the pages to see what happens next. Readers will quickly learn that Tommy was sent to his previously unknown grandmother because her daughter is in an abusive relationship with his father, Scott, and she needs to protect Tommy. While some issues are clear in the novel, others are more obscure and hidden under layers of secrets and lies.
But all isn't quite as it seems with Clarrisa or Chloe and neither seems to be a reliable narrator. Chapters alternate between the two and also between the past and present. Soon questions will arise about what really happened fifteen years ago and why are the neighbors, Mirium and Jeff, so concerned about the boy and her caring for him? Are they really noisy neighbors or do they have reasons to be concerned. A complicated backstory soon emerges.
Admittedly, you have to agree to set disbelief aside and just follow where Vickery decides to take you and what information will be revealed in the plot. I did guess some major plot elements early on, but there were several surprises and some great slight of hand along the way that had me doubting my intuition. This is an entertaining novel.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with an advance reader's copy. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion. The review will be published on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
This was an amazing read. I couldn't put it down. If you enjoy psychological thrillers you will love this one. I love how Sam Vickery kept up the suspense with multiple point of views and connecting chapters that kept you guessing. Throughout the book I had so many theories on what actually happened and I still didn't guess it right! I can't share much without spoiling it but be prepared to read in one sitting. I will definitely be recommending this!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. Thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a really twisty book from Sam Vickery, twisty in the sense that the darkest, twistiest sides of humanity are revealed in this gripping psychological thriller.
Chloe is a 30 year old mother who has had it tough, in her teens she ran away from home, being unable to cope with the burden of having killed her brother during a night terror of which she was utterly unaware. She survived homeless, before clawing her way off the streets, with her abusive partner and young child. As her relationship deteriorates, she fears for her sons safety, and while she plans her escape, she send her son to safety under the care of her estranged mother. As events unfold we are treated to a fantastic story, that is SO unique, it is unlike anything I have ever read!
The telling of the story from the perspective of both Chloe and her mum really works in this story, while the narrative is totally on point.
This story will stay with my for a long time - always a good sign in my opinion!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
