What a rollercoaster of a read this was it was so full of emotions I didn’t know how it was going to end. The twists and turn kept on coming. What would you do if you answered the door and a small child claims to be your grandson but your daughter died 15 years ago. This was extremely well written I loved the writing style it definitely helped build up the suspense. I will definitely be recommending this great domestic thriller. Thanks to netgallery and the publisher for my advanced copy.
What would you do if your doorbell rang and on the other side was a young child claiming to be your grandson. What would happen if that was impossible since your daughter died 15 years ago?
This happens to Clarissa, as a young child claiming to be her grandson shows up at her door and a roller coaster of emotions comes back. Is her daughter alive? What is going on?
The Child at My Door is perfect if you're into a nail-biting thriller that dives deep into family secrets, mysterious vanishings, and the rollercoaster of emotions tied to love and loss.
This is a very fast paced read with a lot of emotion, and a lot of speculating. I flew through this book trying to find out what was going on. I really enjoyed this one! I really like the multiple POV's and the unreliability of them!
Read this if you like:
- Nail-biting thrillers
- Multiple unreliable pov's
- Lots of family secrets
Gripping read from the start. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Stayed up way too late to finish this book in one sitting ! High recommend
A fun, twisty thriller. You begin to question who to trust right along with the main characters. I did not predict the ending or the twists and truly enjoyed this read. Some parts seemed a little drawn out but overall a good book!
I really liked this and had a hard time putting it down. Definitely recommend. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Overall, I liked this book, but it didn't take long for me to figure out Clarissa was lying about things. Tommy shows up on Clarissa's doorstep and says he is her grandson. How can that be when her daughter is dead? The neighbors seems very sketchy to me, and I will admit until the end, I thought the creepy man played a part in everything that happened. Seems very weird to me that all of these people live close to each other, but never ran into each other; never thought maybe something was off?? Annie's character just seems weird...like she could have been more of the story, or maybe take her out altogether. There was def suspense and twists that I enjoyed.
Clarissa's daughter Chloe supposedly. died 15 years ago, and she lives alone in the house that she once shared with her family, since she has also lost her husband and son. But since Clarissa no longer has a living daughter, how is it possible that a 4 -year-old child has shown up on her doorstep assuring her that he is Chloe's son and that Clarissa is his grandma?
We gradually get the story told in various viewpoints. But when it comes to Clarissa and Chloe, which of them is telling the truth? In the answer to that question lies the real strength of this book. Because it is all about who the unreliable narrator is...
The pacing of the story was sometimes uneven, and the style a little dramatic. Family dynamics are at least as important here as the psychological aspect of this thriller, forming the core of the plot. TW needed wrt abuse.
There are plenty of twists, including the one at the end. Overall, the book is based on a clever conceit and worth checking out, even if the execution is not entirely flawless. It gets 3.5 stars.
This author creates well-drawn, complex characters, and knows how to build tension and drama that hold readers to the end. With several plot twists it managed to keep me guessing until the end. Even then I was surprised. I’m not easily surprised.
A gripping read! I didn't want to put it down - constantly guessing and second guessing at motives and involvement. Everytime I thought my suspicions about someone were right, it all went in a different direction.
The premise of a child of a daughter who has supposedly died, appearing at his grandmothers door was enough of a pull but it just gets better and better. As soon as the estate agent incident happened, I was up late reading!
Definitely enjoyed this one - family secrets and mystery is the ideal combination for me.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advance review copy.
Tommy aged 4 arrives at Clarissa’s door calling her grandma, but both her children died 15 years previously. Who is this child whose mum shares the same name as Clarissa’s daughter?
A very dark thriller with well thought out characters.
My first book from this author and I look forward to more!
A story filled with secrets and lies - as the reader you will not know who to trust or who to root for. Kept me gripped until the very last pages.
ARC review. What a wild ride!! Very intriguing and fascinating thriller! Keeps you wondering the whole time! Really enjoyed the characters. I felt like I was right there with them living out the story. Can’t wait to read more by this author!
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The Child at my Door. OHMYGOSH what did I just read????? This was a Wild ride, the twists and the plot were soooooo intriguing, I never wanted to stop reading. Clarissa was sick!!!!!! There was so many stories happening, I wondered how they were going to intertwine and Boy they really intertwined!!! One of the Best books I have read. Enjoy it but know you will get nothing done until you are finished reading,
I celt like I was reading a soap opera. The “twists” and turns in this book and the melodramatic way it was written just wasn’t my thing. I could see this as a pleasure read for people who want a lot of drama and family angst in their stories, but I found it irritating to read after the first thirty pages and sorta wished I’d DNFed it then.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy to read, and review
This was a fast paced thriller from start to finish. As soon as you think you've solved it, another twist is added into the mix. This book will make you question a lot of things. Be careful of who you know, and who you trust. You'll be watching your back after reading this one.
A suspenseful story with twists and turns I did not expect! My emotions were all over the place with every page I read. Really makes you feel for the characters and keeps you thinking even after you put the door down. The suspense holds you until the end!
This was the first time I read this author and will not be the last! Thanks Netgallery for the advanced copy
After having lost her husband, son, and daughter years ago, Clarissa opens her door to find a little boy claiming to be her daughter's son. This is a book of long lost family secrets and what really happened to Clarissa’s family.
This book is told in multiple points of view and has a good amount of intrigue to have kept me reading long after my bedtime. The story is compelling and there are multiple storylines to keep you guessing.
The thing that bothered me so much, however, was that no one in this book ever asked very obvious questions about massive things and no one seemed to want to divulge any information until it got down to wrap up the book. I felt like this was hard to drive the plot throughout the book and was a little maddening because it didn’t make sense as realistic human behavior.
Regardless, it was a fun read and I am happy to have read it!
hmmm i found this slow but intriguing to begin with as i read a bit it got better though there is domestic abuse in it which i did struggle with a little probably why it took me longer too read than normally would. The twists are great you dont see them coming especially the end.
Such a good thriller! I freaking loved it! And it’s nice and fast paced too, it’s packed full of twists and turns and the ENDING!! You will not expect the ending at all!
Best thriller I’ve read for a while!
This was a very exciting read, full of tension and suspense. The twists and turns added to the fast pace of the book.
This book was a littler bit darker than what I would normally go for. Clarissa lost two children and her husband. A little boy, Tommy, arrives at Clarissa’s and calls her grandma. How is that possible? If her children are dead. There were lots of twists and turns throughout the book. I honestly wasn’t sure if I’d finish the book because of how dark it was. Domestic thrillers are not for me. I do enjoy Sam’s writing though.
TW: physical abuse
Thank you, NetGalley, Sam and Bookouture for the ARC!
