Roomies falls into that category of books I would have enjoyed if I'd read them when I acquired them rather than many years later. In 2013, I suspect I would have liked this book, but in 2020, I find myself whelmed. This book just felt like a lot of white privilege, particularly in the way the two white girls discuss the Black guy one of them starts dating. The whole thing made me cringe, honestly. There's even a moment where one of them is like "we're supposed to be colorblind" that really hasn't aged well, even if it does acknowledge that that's the goal but no one actually is. It's very accurate to that moment in YA fiction, but it doesn't sit right now. Aside from that, I struggled with the similarity of the voices in the audiobook, particularly because their circumstances felt so similar, despite their disparate families. There's a youthfulness to the voices that will appeal to people who think a lot of YA is too mature in voice to target adults.

This wasn't bad, and I think the setting in the summer between high school and college is a good one. It's a novel about transitions, and some of that's done quite well. Mostly, this just isn't the right book for 2020 Christina.

I had not requested this title - it was auto-loaded to my shelf by the publisher and I have chosen not to read/review at this time.

Netgalley has required me to leave a rating in order to give feedback so I chose the 5 star.

Thank you

Cleaning out my netgalley of all the books I don't have downloaded to get a better idea of what books I have to review. Sorry I didn't get to this book.
