Every volume that releases just makes me love this comic more and more. This story started good and is just getting better and better and I feel like we are just getting to a really good point, this makes me excited for the next one.
True Beauty fans, are you ready for Volume 4?
True Beauty is a coming-of-age story about Jugyeong, a young woman with self-esteem and body image issues due to long-term bullying for her looks. Jungyeong uses her makeup skills to help “transform” her image, which in turn helps her gain popularity with her peers and begin a personal transformation of how she sees herself. Even though Jugyeong has gained popularity, trust, and supportive friends, she still lives a double-life. Her budding love life and foray into adulthood will surely present new struggles both personally and in her ability to keep her secret.
Volume 4 focuses more on the developing relationships between Jugyeong and her love interests/friends Suho and Seojun during Summer break. We also see a glimmer into Jugyeong’s interest in the fashion and beauty world and how that could potentially shape her future. This is a great installation to help you learn more about the characters and where their individual storylines may lead.
The art style is great as always but the story is just not keeping my attention anymore. The love triangle and angst just aren't doing it for me. But again, the art style is gorgeous.
Thank you for the access to this next volume of the series. I think these are so cute, so I appreciate being able to read it early. I will definitely be checking out the next one. My library definitely purchases these and it's good for me to make sure they're still solid to order for schools. Thank you!
This series is so addictive - I'm hooked on the drama and the author's sense of humor! It is so easy to binge so if you have the slightest inclination to pick it up, give it a try! In this installment especially, the love triangle be triangling. I'm not the biggest fan of love triangles but we get some more back story on the two guys, which I enjoyed! The darker themes in this installment (for example, mental health issues, suicide, etc) definitely make for a deeper storyline. I also like the fact Suho befriends Seojun's sister too! Can't wait for the next one to come out!
A huge thanks to the Wattpad Webtoon book group and Netgalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I loved this. I really enjoyed the Kdrama so I wanted to get more into the webtoon as well and this was such a fun read! Loved seeing similarities and differences between the two as well as just getting tio know the characters better. The art style was cool and it was just a fun read!
I read True Beauty on Webtoon originally, and fell in love with the art style, story, and creativity! I am so happy to be able to be able to read the story straight through instead of having to stop and wait for each chapter! Plus it is an amazing way for me to support the creator.
The story uses bullying to help the MC search for who she is. Is she the same person with or without makeup? I know I am a person who gets different responses based on if I wear it or not… it took me a long time to learn that I can be loved in both looks. I love going on the this trip with her!
I've been a fan of this series since starting it, and this volume did not disappoint. The art is always a mix of really beautiful and vibrant, and downright hilarious when it comes to the faces the main character makes. There are subtle differences in the story at this point from the K-Drama, so I would definitely recommend that fans of the drama or people interested in the upcoming anime give this series a read.
I really am enjoying this series! I love the graphics, and how the relationships are getting more complex. I eat up feelings of jealousy and love triangle with other men so I started really enjoying this addition to the series.
My only complaint is through NetGalley, it's almost unreadable. I understand wanting to take a stand against piracy, but with every single page covered in anti-piracy language on every format available for ARC readers, I could not help but be distracted and annoyed throughout this read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for review.
Volume 4 has arrived to print! We continue following the story Jugyeong and how she navigates the end of her high school year. As exams come closer, as does the choices she must make, both with her future as well as her love life! Suho becomes closer than ever, however things with Seojun start to progress without Jugyeong being fully aware of what's happening. Where will each path lead?
The always funny, lighthearted True Beauty continues to hook me as a reader with the hilarious commentary and illustrations. If you enjoy the concept of "breaking the 4th wall," this story is for you. 4/5 stars.
She is slowly finding her place with makeup and her self esteem. It's so rough that one encounter with her previous mean girls made her shrink back. I'm rooting for her to be happy and content!
Omg I can't choose between Suho and Seyeon! One is such a romantic, the other is a very argumentative person but sweet too. Ahhh!!!
Where's volume five?!?! Come soon please!!!!
I loved the True Beauty kdrama so much I immediately began reading the comic book series and it does not disappoint. The comic takes its time and tells the intimate details better than the show even did. It’s so good. The drawings are fun, and sometimes hilarious, but also sooo pretty. It’s colorful and holds your eye. I love this series, can’t say enough good things about it!
Thank you for the eARC!!
True Beauty Vol Four is a sweet and innocent look into the inner mind of Jugyeong, a girl trying to navigate her high school life while hiding her true appearance from her peers. This volume deals with her feelings towards Suho, who's seen her true face, and how to confess to him or, better yet, have him confess to her.
There's also the friend-zoned Seojun who has feelings for Jugyeong, but is too shy to confess (even though he's shy about little else!) He's my favorite as he has the most personality and he and Jugyeong get along really well. Their scenes are the most interesting to read, imo. Their dynamics are quick and funny, matching each other's energy at a moments' notice.
However, to his credit, Suho is much more gentlemanly. He's polite and thoughtful, but very stand-offish. That's not exactly a weakness, but it does make it hard to get close to him. This is something Jugyeong struggles with throughout the book, as well, so it was done on purpose and not just because he's a poorly developed character.
The artwork is nice as well. I especially enjoyed the moments when Jugyeong would get angry/excited. Her rage face is quite humorous!
Overall, a quick, easy, and enjoyable read. Will definitely recommend!
I have been impatiently awaiting the arrival of this next volume! This series has me hooked! I really enjoy the way that they bring this webtoon into graphic novel format.
So if you’re new to this story it’s addictive. The love triangle haunts you. You’re swapping who you want to work out like every other page! I love it! You just get sucked in and invested! This specific volume isn’t my favorite in the series because it’s a little bit of an information dump. I would have like a little more romance. However I can’t wait for the next one cause I know something good is coming!
The ending?? Why!! I want to know what happens next. I feel like this volume went by the quickest of the 4 and I was sad it was over. It's a fun series that delves into deeper topics like mental health and depression, suicide, grief, trauma, body image issues, bullying, confidence, etc. Our main character only feels confident when she has a full face of makeup which is a result of years of bullying for her looks. Her love interest, Suho, has seen her regular face and likes her just the same. They are both kind but shy when it comes to showing how they feel so it is the SLOWEST BURN. And now there's another guy, Seojun, in the mix and he's also very handsome. Jugyeong has become friends with him despite poor first impressions but could there be more feelings than friendship there? Not to mention the two guys are ex-best friends who haven't talked in a long time because of the death of a close friend. So much drama and will they won't they vibes. True Beauty Volume Four was a quick, fast-paced read that will hold your interest and have you finishing it in one sitting and patiently waiting for the next volume! The artwork is beautiful and colorful. The characters are cute and unique. I really enjoy this series and am looking forward to the next one.
Thank you Webtoon Unscrolled for the digital ARC via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This series has been pretty good so far. I'm new to the series - I didn't read the webtoon or watch the k-drama, but still became interested in the story. I became even more intrigued to hear it was being adapted into an anime, but I'm not sure if that is confirmed or not. All this to say, there hasn't been a point in the story that I didn't understand what was going on or that I wished I had more information (actually some of the reviews say these have even more info than the k-drama and they wished more had been put into the show). I binge read volume 3 and 4 together - and I really appreciated that volume 3 developed the relationships more and helped us understand the past of these characters even more. This volume really focused more on the romance aspect I think - our main character is a bit naïve when it comes to romance, mostly because it's new for her. All her struggles and insecurities feel really relatable, not being able to tell whether someone has feelings for you, not wanting to come on too strong and scare them away, being insecure about her looks due to her past bullying, wondering whether someone can truly like her after they see her without make-up on, etc. I also really like how both guy, while they are very different, are both turning into someone who could truly care for her and either guy seems like a good choice.
Also, I'm glad I was a little wrong about which guy was going to be the second male lead - cause the one from the first volume was not it - but in a way I was still correct with the path the story is taking. I'm sure that's because most of the tropes used in romance stories are fairly similar, but that doesn't make the story any less enjoyable even though it's kind of predictable.
Thanks to #NetGalley for an advance e-copy of TrueBeautyVolumeFour by Yaongyi to read and review.
I’m addicted to this series now lol I have been recommending it like crazy to customers. And have many customers coming back for more!
True Beauty is a Webtoon that I have been a fan of online for quite some time. I am glad that we're in the process of getting physical versions of this comic as well in order to support the creator. For those who are new to True Beauty, it was also turned into a drama, which is a fantastic way to engage with the story. This was literally made to be a kdrama.
There are elements to this story that could potentially bother folks who have a history of struggling with bullying and beauty standards. There is also a certain level of suspension of disbelief that one needs to have when consuming this story. Like, if men treated me this way, I would drop their butts personally. And the absurdity of the two lives trope in this needs to be bought into for full enjoyment.
I think my favourite panel in this volume is the "Cookie from Hell". It's just so silly and charming, that you can't help but smile, you know? The scene where Ju-Gyeong gives herself bangs also kills me. Relatable.
Yaongyi's art suits this style of print, I think. Webtoons, at times, feel awkward when converted from the long scrolling chapters. But I think True Beauty has been converted very well. I actually hesitated collecting the physical copies, but upon reading this on my tablet, I feel more confident in getting the printed copies now.

Honest review from my 11 year old daughter:
I loved the continued story of my True Beauty Family. The art style, the relationships, oh my!
I am looking forward to reading the print copy though, as the version I had a waterprint and some blurred pages at times.
SEOJUN!!! Oh my goodness. Suho who? I'm sorry, I know I'm supposed to be rooting for Suho x Jugyeong but how can I when Seojun is right there? I like his dynamic with Jugyeong better too. She's not so afraid of him. They have this friends to lovers vibe that I love.
I had a hard time reading the scenes in this graphic novel due to the quality of the eARC and I hope that isn't passed onto the published book. I have no clue what Jugyeong was texting Suho about or how he responded because it was so heavily pixelated.
I was amused and swooning at that scene with Jugyeong in Seojun's room where he reminded her, in a flustered huff, that he was a man and she shouldn't just sit on a man's bed so casually. It gave me total otome vibes!
With the news that this series is going to get adapted (again), I saw spoilers galore for the series and now I don't really know how I'm going to continue!
I do find this series lots of fun and very enjoyable. However, I do feel like it's losing it's commentary on superficiality and lookism in favour of this love triangle with Jugyeong, Suho, and Seojun. It's not like I expected this series to be some manifesto, I just thought there would be a tiny bit more on this subject in this volume. It's disappointing to me, and I'm hoping that Yaongyi gets back to it in the next volume.
Thank you, NetGalley and Wattpad WEBTOON for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
