Not a Crossfit fan, but I dabble in exercise. This was an inspiring and captivating book. Really showing the strength in her story.
In Resilient, Brooke Wells delivers a refreshingly honest and inspiring account of her remarkable comeback following a devastating elbow injury at the 2021 CrossFit Games. Her story of overcoming fear, self-doubt, and physical challenges celebrates the extraordinary spirit of an athlete who embodies strength, passion, courage, and an unwavering will to succeed.
Was an interesting book. I just was not into it, I think I listened to it at the wrong time.
I’m not a CrossFit person and I’d had not heard of Brooke until I seen this book on NetGalley. I’m so glad I read her book. WOW it was truly amazing and inspiring! Thank you Brooke for sharing your story.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book.
This memoir was interesting! It follows Brook Wells who is an amazing cross fit athlete. But in the middle of the CrossFit games she dislocated her elbow and can’t continue. This wads to surgery and her journey back to being one of the best in her sport.
She tells you the nitty gritty details of her push to be the best again. She is brutally honest with how great and sucky this process is and it does show you have strong, determined AND resilient she really is. It was so inspiring to hear her story.
I do think reading this one is hard, because the audiobook in the story don’t equal each other for me. The story itself is a 4/5, it was truly inspiring. However, as much as I loved Brooke story, her narration was so hard to connect with, and I didn’t feel the power that I felt in other audiobook memoirs. I give the narration a 2/5. Therefore the overall might be 3/5 .
Man Brooke Wells gives a whole new meaning to never give up! Not only does she work hard at her dream but she does it in a safe way to insure that her dream can actually become a reality. She didn’t let the daunting road ahead of her dissuade her or keep her down. I enjoyed this book so much and recommend it to anyone who wants to achieve anything thing in any sport.
5/5 stars.
I listened to the audiobook version which Brooke narrated herself. Brooke did a great job and it felt like you were sitting next to here as she was telling you a story. The story progressed from the night of her injury during the CrossFit games and through her journey to recovery. The title of Resilient truly summarizes the hurdles Brooke went through over her recovery year. When the audiobook finished I literally said out loud “good for you, Brooke”. I think anyone who has an athletic background would enjoy this. You do not necessarily have to be part of the CrossFit world to be listen.
I really enjoyed Resilient! I have been going to a Crossfit gym for years, so I am familiar with Brooke Wells. I appreciated her honesty about being injured and the patience it took to recover. I was a bit questioning of her pushing to compete so soon after surgery, but she also recognized the risk inherent. I also appreciated her reflection of how the injury made her stronger mentally and physically. Loved the stories about training with Tia Toomey!
I liked hearing her read her own book, even if she wasn't the perfect narrator.
CW: descriptions of elbow injury and surgery. not for the faint of heart!
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the ALC!
This book took me in two directions: (1) WOW, YES, she *is* so resilient and I'm so inspired! I love going to the gym and a comeback after an injury *is* possible. (2) CrossFit people might be a little crazy. I found it a little sad that everything in her life is focused on a three-day event. There’s something to be said for rest and giving yourself time to heal instead of rushing it and lying to officials to continue in a competition when it might not really be good for your body. Is that really resilience?
I did like that this was narrated by the author!
Thank you to @NetGalley for letting me listen to the advanced audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
Ive always been a fan of Brooke Wells and the crossfit games and this book didn't disappoint. Ive been watching the games since 2018, and I know professional crossfit athletes are a different breed.
Brooke describes the pain from her surgery and how much time she spends on recovery, to bounce back from this injury. I loved the book, she described not only the physical hurdles, but the emotional and mental hurdles to come back from such an injury. I also enjoyed that it was narrated by the author.
I will recommend this book for people who love a comeback story or love crossfit!
Book Review:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Resilient: The Untold Story of CrossFit’s Greatest Comeback is Brooke Wells personal account of overcoming injury at the height of her professional career. After dislocating her elbow during the 2021 CrossFit Games, she was forced to medically withdrawal from the competition. Brooke immediately began the process of recovery with the goal to be back in time for the 2022 games.
While I have never done CrossFit myself, I had the pleasure of watching several CrossFit documentaries when they were streaming on NetFlix. Brooke was featured in those documentaries so I was familiar with her. But I was shocked to learn she sustained such a horrific injury in the last few years.
After being approved for this eARC, I immediately googled the event that left Brooke with a dislocated elbow. To say the video was hard to watch would be an understatement. I cannot imagine enduring the pain she was forced to. The mental fortitude it took to get back to peak CrossFit fitness could not be done by the majority of athletes.
I had the pleasure of listening to this book on audio and highly recommend this format. I loved that Brooke had the opportunity to narrate the audiobook herself. While this is an inspiring story, getting to hear it told in her own word made it even more impressive.
Special thanks to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio, and Brooke Wells for allowing me to listen to this book in exchange for my honest review.
*You don’t have to be a fan of CrossFit to enjoy this book. Brooke does a phenomenal job of breaking down a difficult sport and complicated injury so that it is accessible to anyone who reads her story!
This a great story of perserverence and of course, resilience. I think I just wish there was more on the xfit journey and not just the recovery. Everything is great, I hate eating memoirs. This is a good one for sure, just wanted something to grab and inspire me. The telling of this one didn’t quite get me there. Thank you for sharing your story KW!
3.5 stars, rounded up. Pubs 16 Jan
I liked that the author read her own story. Her narration wasn't professional level but I did like it. Brooke's story had me crying in the first couple chapters. Her tenacity to get thru the injury and surgery was inspiring.
Thank you to the publisher via Netgalley for the early copy to read and review.
Before picking up my copy of Resilient, courtesy of an ALC from Macmillan Audio, I did not know who Brooke Wells was. To be blunt, a part of the reason I wanted to read/listen to this book was because of a 2024 Pop Sugar Reading Prompt; a reading challenge I am completing this year. All I can say is wow.
As a mom of two student athletes, I was moved by Brooke's story. From a horrendous injury that the world got to view to the tough choices to make during recovery and her comeback journey, I was hooked by Brooke's storytelling. I've never step foot in a CrossFit gym before and Brooke did a stellar job at explaining the terminology for those who don't already know it.
I realized Resilient was going to rise from a 4 star to a 5 star book when I drove my daughter to school this morning. She has been a competitive runner since she was about eight years old and was slammed with an Osgood-Schlatters diagnosis during puberty. Just when she thought she was finally out of the constant knee pain at fifteen, her entire cross country season was sidelined by a hip injury she is still fighting to come back to. Normally engrossed in her phone or finishing up last minute work on the drive, I noticed she was hooked on every single word and she asked if she could borrow my copy to read herself. Thankfully for her, I have a finished copy on the way that she can keep in her room.
Brooke Wells is a phenomenal athlete with a bright future both within her sport and her life; who's compelling story of loss, hope and determination with inspire people in all different areas of their life.
I will never forget watching the Crossfit Games and seeing Brooke Well's horrific injury and knew when this book came out that I had to listen to it. This memoir chronicles Brooke's sheet determination to overcome both the physical and mental obstacles she faced after her injury. Through listening to Brooke, you can truly hear her passion, strength, and resilience.
have been a casual CrossFit fan for several years now and have watched most of the recent CrossFit Games documentaries every year, so I knew who Brooke Wells was but since she was never really highly featured in the docs I was only vaguely aware of her injury. After reading her story of her epic comeback from that injury I am now officially a Brooke Wells fan.
If you’re in the mood for an sports comeback story I highly recommend this book. It’s both emotional and inspiring and Brooke proves that she is one to watch!
I read the ebook before I listened to the audiobook and I ended up rating this audiobook lower simply because of the narration. I understand that it can be a boon to have the author read their books especially biographies, but I did not find that to be the case with this book as I felt her narration was flat and without emotion. However I also understand that she is not a professional narrator, and still enjoyed reading her story.
This book was okay. Listened to the audiobook, which was narrated well by the author. I don’t know much about CrossFit and thought this might be an interesting way to learn more about it and an athlete who has excelled. That said, this book felt really incomplete. It focuses on a relatively short period of time in the author’s life and doesn’t talk about her journey to CrossFit or delve into her motivations to continue. It felt very sterile in how she laid out her injury to recovery to then competing at the following year’s CrossFit championship. It went into extreme detail about her feelings during specific exercises, which adds context but it is ultimately boring.
I would only recommend this book to CrossFit fans.
As an avid fiction reader, and crossfitter, I wasn't sure what I would think of this book, but Brooke Wells did an amazing job telling her story. I knew the highlights of her comeback story going in, but the details and emotions behind the physical and mental aspects of her comeback were truly inspiring to hear. And I am so glad that she read the audiobook herself. She did an amazing job and you could really feel the emotion behind it. I think this book is great for anyone interested in how to build mental toughness and resiliency. Thank you NetGally for the arc of the audiobook.
I really enjoyed this book. Brooke did a good job sharing her experience and all of her thoughts and emotions. Part bio, part self help type book.
Sitting in the stands at the 2021 Crossfit Games and seeing this injury happen real time was gut wrenching. Reading about it and all the events that happened afterwards to get Wells back to competing shape is pure grit.
The audiobook is worth listening to since she reads it herself!
Brooke Wells is a dynamic and determined athlete who has overcome many setbacks. Her story covers her road to competition, the challenges and setbacks she has faced, the importance of her support network, and she demonstrates her mental and physical grit. Her narration is descriptive and you can almost feel the pain and horror she went through in snapping her elbow during competition!
I felt that the pace was a bit slow and her narration a bit stilted, but given that this is her first book/audiobook, it's understandable that she is authentic and brings us along on her journey.
